Introduction An impaired ability to oxidize fat may be a factor in the obesity's aetiology (3). Moreover, the exercise intensity (Fatmax) eliciting the maximal fat oxidation rate (MFO) was lower in obese (O) compared with lean (L) individuals (4). However, difference in fat oxidation rate (FOR) during exercise between O and L remains equivocal and little is known about FORs during high intensities (>60% ) in O compared with L. This study aimed to characterize fat oxidation kinetics over a large range of intensities in L and O. Methods 12 healthy L [body mass index (BMI): 22.8±0.4] and 16 healthy O men (BMI: 38.9±1.4) performed submaximal incremental test (Incr) to determine whole-body fat oxidation kinetics using indirect calorimetry. After a 15-min resting period (Rest) and 10-min warm-up at 20% of maximal power output (MPO, determined by a maximal incremental test), the power output was increased by 7.5% MPO every 6-min until respiratory exchange ratio reached 1.0. Venous lactate and glucose and plasma concentration of epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), insulin and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) were assessed at each step. A mathematical model (SIN) (1), including three variables (dilatation, symmetry, translation), was used to characterize fat oxidation (normalized by fat-free mass) kinetics and to determine Fatmax and MFO. Results FOR at Rest and MFO were not significantly different between groups (p≥0.1). FORs were similar from 20-60% (p≥0.1) and significantly lower from 65-85% in O than in L (p≤0.04). Fatmax was significantly lower in O than in L (46.5±2.5 vs 56.7±1.9 % respectively; p=0.005). Fat oxidation kinetics was characterized by similar translation (p=0.2), significantly lower dilatation (p=0.001) and tended to a left-shift symmetry in O compared with L (p=0.09). Plasma E, insulin and NEFA were significantly higher in L compared to O (p≤0.04). There were no significant differences in glucose, lactate and plasma NE between groups (p≥0.2). Conclusion The study showed that O presented a lower Fatmax and a lower reliance on fat oxidation at high, but not at moderate, intensities. This may be linked to a: i) higher levels of insulin and lower E concentrations in O, which may induce blunted lipolysis; ii) higher percentage of type II and a lower percentage of type I fibres (5), and iii) decreased mitochondrial content (2), which may reduce FORs at high intensities and Fatmax. Background: Although there have been many studies on isokinetic shoulder exercises in evaluation and rehabilitation programs, the cardiovascular and metabolic responses of those modes of muscle strength exercises have been poorly investigated. Objective: To analyze cardiovascular and metabolic responses during a standardized test used to study the internal (IR) and external (ER) rotators maximal isokinetic strength. Methods: Four days after an incremental exercise test on cycle ergometer, ten healthy subjects performed an isokinetic shoulder strength evaluation with cardiovascular (Heart rate, HR) and metabolic gas exchange (&Vdot;O_{2}) analysis. The IR and ER isokinetic strength, measured in seated position with 45° of shoulder abduction in scapular plane, was evaluated concentrically at 60, 120 and 240°/s and eccentrically at 60°/s, for both shoulder sides. An endurance test with 30 repetitions at 240°/s was performed at the end of each shoulder side testing. Results: There was a significant increase of mean HR with isokinetic exercise (P< 0.05). Increases of HR was 42-71% over the resting values. During endurance testing, increases of HR was 77-105% over the resting values, and corresponded to 85-86% of the maximal HR during incremental test. Increase of &Vdot;O_{2} during isokinetic exercises was from 6-11 ml/min/kg to 20-43 ml/min/kg. Conclusion: This study performed significant cardiovascular and metabolic responses to isokinetic exercise of rotators shoulder muscles. A warm-up should be performed before maximal high-intensity isokinetic shoulder testing. Our results indicated that observation and supervision are important during testing and/or training sessions, especially in subjects with risk for cardiovascular disorders.

This study aimed to compare two different maximal incremental tests with different time durations [a maximal incremental ramp test with a short time duration (8-12 min) (STest) and a maximal incremental test with a longer time duration (20-25 min) (LTest)] to investigate whether an LTest accurately assesses aerobic fitness in class II and III obese men. Twenty obese men (BMI≥35 kg.m-2) without secondary pathologies (mean±SE; 36.7±1.9 yr; 41.8±0.7 kg*m-2) completed an STest (warm-up: 40 W; increment: 20 W*min-1) and an LTest [warm-up: 20% of the peak power output (PPO) reached during the STest; increment: 10% PPO every 5 min until 70% PPO was reached or until the respiratory exchange ratio reached 1.0, followed by 15 W.min-1 until exhaustion] on a cycle-ergometer to assess the peak oxygen uptake [Formula: see text] and peak heart rate (HRpeak) of each test. There were no significant differences in [Formula: see text] (STest: 3.1±0.1 L*min-1; LTest: 3.0±0.1 L*min-1) and HRpeak (STest: 174±4 bpm; LTest: 173±4 bpm) between the two tests. Bland-Altman plot analyses showed good agreement and Pearson product-moment and intra-class correlation coefficients showed a strong correlation between [Formula: see text] (r=0.81 for both; p≤0.001) and HRpeak (r=0.95 for both; p≤0.001) during both tests. [Formula: see text] and HRpeak assessments were not compromised by test duration in class II and III obese men. Therefore, we suggest that the LTest is a feasible test that accurately assesses aerobic fitness and may allow for the exercise intensity prescription and individualization that will lead to improved therapeutic approaches in treating obesity and severe obesity.

Sahalaitoksilla käytetään lämpöenergiaa sahatavaran kuivauksessa. Lämpö tuotetaan pääasiassa polttamalla sivutuotteita, kuten kuorta ja purua. Hyvän kuivauslaadun saavuttamiseksi kuivausilman lämpötilan ja kosteuden on oltava oikean suuruiset. Epäsuotuisat kuivausolosuhteet hidastavat kuivumista tai aiheuttavat kuivausvikoja. Työssä käsiteltävänä sahalla lämpö tuotetaan kahdella sivutuotteita polttavalla kuorikattilalla sekä tarvittaessa raskasöljykattilalla. Raskasöljykattilalla tuotetaan myös kuivaamojen kostutushöyry. Automatiikkaa kehittämällä lämmöntuotanto saatiin reagoimaan paremmin vaihtelevaan lämmöntarpeeseen. Hyvin toimivan lämmöntuo¬tantojärjestelmän ansiosta kuivausolosuhteet ovat säilyneet entistä vakaampina. Matalapaineista höyryä johdetaan osaan sahan kuivaamoista. Höyrytys parantaa kuivauslaatua ja mahdollistaa nopeamman kuivauksen. Kuivaamot höyrytetään kuormanvaihdon jälkeen, jotta ilmankosteus nousee nopeasti tavoitetasolle. Lämmitys-vaiheen jälkeen höyrykostutusta ei tulisi käyttää ennen seuraavaa kuormanvaihtoa. Kehittämällä kuivaamoautomatiikkaa höyryn käyttö saatiin aikaisempaa kustannustehokkaammaksi. Muutoksien avulla polttoainekustannukset ovat pienentyneet.

The phenomenon of over-recovery consists of a participant’s maximal force levels returning to values above initial levels. The present study examined the presence and causes of over-recovery following local muscular fatigue. Fourteen males completed two fatigue protocols consisting of maximal isometric dorsiflexion contractions. Upon completion of the fatigue protocol participants’ force was monitored over a 15 minute recovery period. Dorsiflexion force and surface electromyography (sEMG) from the tibialis anterior and soleus were monitored concurrently. Following the two fatigue conditions (10 and 20% force decrement) force recovered to 100.5 and 99.5% of initial levels for each condition, respectively. Surface EMG root-mean-square amplitude and MPF exhibited changes consistent with a warm-up effect. It was concluded that over-recovery was not present in the tibialis anterior following a local muscular fatigue. However, the return in force to initial values, rather than a persistent decrement as normally observed, was mediated by the warm-up effect.

Many position stands and review papers have refuted the myths associated with resistance training (RT) in children and adolescents. With proper training methods, RT for children and adolescents can be relatively safe and improve overall health. The objective of this position paper and review is to highlight research and provide recommendations in aspects of RT that have not been extensively reported in the pediatric literature. In addition to the well-documented increases in muscular strength and endurance, RT has been used to improve function in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy and burn victims. Increases in children’s muscular strength have been attributed primarily to neurological adaptations due to the disproportionately higher increase in muscle strength than in muscle size. Although most studies using anthropometric measures have not shown significant muscle hypertrophy in children, more sensitive measures such as magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound have suggested hypertrophy may occur. There is no minimum age for RT for children. However the training and instruction must be appropriate for children and adolescents involving a proper warm-up, cool-down and an appropriate choice of exercises. It is recommended that low-to-moderate intensity resistance should be utilized 2-3 times per week on non-consecutive days, with 1-2 sets initially, progressing to 4 sets of 8-15 repetitions for 8-12 exercises. These exercises can include more advanced movements such as Olympic style lifting, plyometrics and balance training, which can enhance strength, power, co-ordination and balance. However specific guidelines for these more advanced techniques need to be established for youth. In conclusion, a RT program that is within a child’s or adolescent’s capacity, involves gradual progression under qualified instruction and supervision with appropriately sized equipment can involve more advanced or intense RT exercises which can lead to functional (i.e. muscular strength, endurance, power, balance and co-ordination) and health benefits.

Die Konvektionstrocknung ist eine der ältesten Methoden zur Konservierung von Lebensmitteln. Es ist bekannt, dass Agrarprodukte temperaturempfindlich sind. Bei Überhitzung erleiden sie chemische und physikalische Veränderungen, die ihre Qualität vermindern. In der industriellen Praxis wird die Konvektionstrocknung in der Regel auf Grundlage empirisch ermittelter Werte durchgeführt, welche die Produkttemperatur nicht berücksichtigen. Es ist deshalb nicht sichergestellt, ob der Prozess optimal oder auch nur gut betrieben wird. Inhalt dieser Arbeit ist ein Vergleich der klassischen einstufigen Konvektionstrocknung mit einer Prozessführungsstrategie bei der die Produkttemperatur als Regelgröße eingeführt wird. Anhand der Untersuchung des Trocknungsverhaltens von Äpfeln werden die beiden Verfahren analysiert, die erhaltenen Ergebnisse miteinander verglichen und daraus optimierte Trocknungsbedingungen abgeleitet. Die für dieses Projekt entwickelte Prozessanlage erlaubt die simultane Untersuchung sämtlicher wesentlicher Temperaturen, der Gewichtsveränderung und der optischen Qualitätskriterien. Gleichzeitig ist es möglich, entweder die Lufttemperatur oder die Temperatur des Produktes zur regeln, während die jeweils andere Größe als Messwert erfasst wird. Es kann weiterhin zwischen Durch- und Überströmung gewählt werden.

Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit werden Modellbildungsverfahren zur echtzeitfähigen Simulation wichtiger Schadstoffkomponenten im Abgasstrom von Verbrennungsmotoren vorgestellt. Es wird ein ganzheitlicher Entwicklungsablauf dargestellt, dessen einzelne Schritte, beginnend bei der Ver-suchsplanung über die Erstellung einer geeigneten Modellstruktur bis hin zur Modellvalidierung, detailliert beschrieben werden. Diese Methoden werden zur Nachbildung der dynamischen Emissi-onsverläufe relevanter Schadstoffe des Ottomotors angewendet. Die abgeleiteten Emissionsmodelle dienen zusammen mit einer Gesamtmotorsimulation zur Optimierung von Betriebstrategien in Hybridfahrzeugen. Im ersten Abschnitt der Arbeit wird eine systematische Vorgehensweise zur Planung und Erstellung von komplexen, dynamischen und echtzeitfähigen Modellstrukturen aufgezeigt. Es beginnt mit einer physikalisch motivierten Strukturierung, die eine geeignete Unterteilung eines Prozessmodells in einzelne überschaubare Elemente vorsieht. Diese Teilmodelle werden dann, jeweils ausgehend von einem möglichst einfachen nominalen Modellkern, schrittweise erweitert und ermöglichen zum Abschluss eine robuste Nachbildung auch komplexen, dynamischen Verhaltens bei hinreichender Genauigkeit. Da einige Teilmodelle als neuronale Netze realisiert werden, wurde eigens ein Verfah-ren zur sogenannten diskreten evidenten Interpolation (DEI) entwickelt, das beim Training einge-setzt, und bei minimaler Messdatenanzahl ein plausibles, also evidentes Verhalten experimenteller Modelle sicherstellen kann. Zum Abgleich der einzelnen Teilmodelle wurden statistische Versuchs-pläne erstellt, die sowohl mit klassischen DoE-Methoden als auch mittels einer iterativen Versuchs-planung (iDoE ) generiert wurden. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit werden, nach Ermittlung der wichtigsten Einflussparameter, die Model-strukturen zur Nachbildung dynamischer Emissionsverläufe ausgewählter Abgaskomponenten vor-gestellt, wie unverbrannte Kohlenwasserstoffe (HC), Stickstoffmonoxid (NO) sowie Kohlenmono-xid (CO). Die vorgestellten Simulationsmodelle bilden die Schadstoffkonzentrationen eines Ver-brennungsmotors im Kaltstart sowie in der anschließenden Warmlaufphase in Echtzeit nach. Im Vergleich zur obligatorischen Nachbildung des stationären Verhaltens wird hier auch das dynami-sche Verhalten des Verbrennungsmotors in transienten Betriebsphasen ausreichend korrekt darge-stellt. Eine konsequente Anwendung der im ersten Teil der Arbeit vorgestellten Methodik erlaubt, trotz einer Vielzahl von Prozesseinflussgrößen, auch hier eine hohe Simulationsqualität und Ro-bustheit. Die Modelle der Schadstoffemissionen, eingebettet in das dynamische Gesamtmodell eines Ver-brennungsmotors, werden zur Ableitung einer optimalen Betriebsstrategie im Hybridfahrzeug ein-gesetzt. Zur Lösung solcher Optimierungsaufgaben bieten sich modellbasierte Verfahren in beson-derer Weise an, wobei insbesondere unter Verwendung dynamischer als auch kaltstartfähiger Mo-delle und der damit verbundenen Realitätsnähe eine hohe Ausgabequalität erreicht werden kann.

Summary - Cooking banana is one of the most important crops in Uganda; it is a staple food and source of household income in rural areas. The most common cooking banana is locally called matooke, a Musa sp triploid acuminate genome group (AAA-EAHB). It is perishable and traded in fresh form leading to very high postharvest losses (22-45%). This is attributed to: non-uniform level of harvest maturity, poor handling, bulk transportation and lack of value addition/processing technologies, which are currently the main challenges for trade and export, and diversified utilization of matooke. Drying is one of the oldest technologies employed in processing of agricultural produce. A lot of research has been carried out on drying of fruits and vegetables, but little information is available on matooke. Drying of matooke and milling it to flour extends its shelf-life is an important means to overcome the above challenges. Raw matooke flour is a generic flour developed to improve shelf stability of the fruit and to find alternative uses. It is rich in starch (80 - 85%db) and subsequently has a high potential as a calorie resource base. It possesses good properties for both food and non-food industrial use. Some effort has been done to commercialize the processing of matooke but there is still limited information on its processing into flour. It was imperative to carry out an in-depth study to bridge the following gaps: lack of accurate information on the maturity window within which matooke for processing into flour can be harvested leading to non-uniform quality of matooke flour; there is no information on moisture sorption isotherm for matooke from which the minimum equilibrium moisture content in relation to temperature and relative humidity is obtainable, below which the dry matooke would be microbiologically shelf-stable; and lack of information on drying behavior of matooke and standardized processing parameters for matooke in relation to physicochemical properties of the flour. The main objective of the study was to establish the optimum harvest maturity window and optimize the processing parameters for obtaining standardized microbiologically shelf-stable matooke flour with good starch quality attributes. This research was designed to: i) establish the optimum maturity harvest window within which matooke can be harvested to produce a consistent quality of matooke flour, ii) establish the sorption isotherms for matooke, iii) establish the effect of process parameters on drying characteristics of matooke, iv) optimize the drying process parameters for matooke, v) validate the models of maturity and optimum process parameters and vi) standardize process parameters for commercial processing of matooke. Samples were obtained from a banana plantation at Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID), Technology Business Incubation Center (TBI) at Nyaruzunga – Bushenyi in Western Uganda. A completely randomized design (CRD) was employed in selecting the banana stools from which samples for the experiments were picked. The cultivar Mbwazirume which is soft cooking and commonly grown in Bushenyi was selected for the study. The static gravitation method recommended by COST 90 Project (Wolf et al., 1985), was used for determination of moisture sorption isotherms. A research dryer developed for this research. All experiments were carried out in laboratories at TBI. The physiological maturity of matooke cv. mbwazirume at Bushenyi is 21 weeks. The optimum harvest maturity window for commercial processing of matooke flour (Raw Tooke Flour - RTF) at Bushenyi is between 15-21 weeks. The finger weight model is recommended for farmers to estimate harvest maturity for matooke and the combined model of finger weight and pulp peel ratio is recommended for commercial processors. Matooke isotherms exhibited type II curve behavior which is characteristic of foodstuffs. The GAB model best described all the adsorption and desorption moisture isotherms. For commercial processing of matooke, in order to obtain a microbiologically shelf-stable dry product. It is recommended to dry it to moisture content below or equal to 10% (wb). The hysteresis phenomenon was exhibited by the moisture sorption isotherms for matooke. The isoteric heat of sorption for both adsorptions and desorption isotherms increased with decreased moisture content. The total isosteric heat of sorption for matooke: adsorption isotherm ranged from 4,586 – 2,386 kJ/kg and desorption isotherm from 18,194– 2,391 kJ/kg for equilibrium moisture content from 0.3 – 0.01 (db) respectively. The minimum energy required for drying matooke from 80 – 10% (wb) is 8,124 kJ/kg of water removed. Implying that the minimum energy required for drying of 1 kg of fresh matooke from 80 - 10% (wb) is 5,793 kJ. The drying of matooke takes place in three steps: the warm-up and the two falling rate periods. The drying rate constant for all processing parameters ranged from 5,793 kJ and effective diffusivity ranged from 1.5E-10 - 8.27E-10 m2/s. The activation energy (Ea) for matooke was 16.3kJ/mol (1,605 kJ/kg). Comparing the activation energy (Ea) with the net isosteric heat of sorption for desorption isotherm (qst) (1,297.62) at 0.1 (kg water/kg dry matter), indicated that Ea was higher than qst suggesting that moisture molecules travel in liquid form in matooke slices. The total color difference (ΔE*) between the fresh and dry samples, was lowest for effect of thickness of 7 mm, followed by air velocity of 6 m/s, and then drying air temperature at 70˚C. The drying system controlled by set surface product temperature, reduced the drying time by 50% compared to that of a drying system controlled by set air drying temperature. The processing parameters did not have a significant effect on physicochemical and quality attributes, suggesting that any drying air temperature can be used in the initial stages of drying as long as the product temperature does not exceed gelatinization temperature of matooke (72˚C). The optimum processing parameters for single-layer drying of matooke are: thickness = 3 mm, air temperatures 70˚C, dew point temperature 18˚C and air velocity 6 m/s overflow mode. From practical point of view it is recommended that for commercial processing of matooke, to employ multi-layer drying of loading capacity equal or less than 7 kg/m², thickness 3 mm, air temperatures 70˚C, dew point temperature 18˚C and air velocity 6 m/s overflow mode.

Objetivo: Medir y comparar el comportamiento agudo de la presión arterial (TA), la frecuencia cardiaca (FC) y la percepción subjetiva del esfuerzo físico (PSE) durante un circuito de pesas de resistencia variable (CRV) versus ejercicio aeróbico submáximo en cicloergómetro (EA) en hipertensos estados I y II.Métodos: Se evaluaron 21 individuos (8 hombres y 13 mujeres) hipertensos controlados de estados I y II (15 activos y 6 sedentarios, 56±5.9 años). Todos recibieron inducción sobre calentamiento, manejo de escala de PSE, técnica respiratoria y uso de máquinas de pesas durante el ejercicio. Con intervalos de una semana se sometieron a una sesión de CRV en seis estaciones al 50% de 1RM, y a una sesión de EA a intensidades de 70%-80% de la FCmax, en intervalos de una semana. Durante ambas sesiones se realizaron mediciones de FC, PA y PSE.Resultados: Se aplicó una Prueba t pareada para comparar las respuestas a ambos tipos de ejercicio. Se encontró un incremento menor de la FC (p<0.001), PA sistólica (p<0.005) y PSE (p<0.005) durante el CRV. La elevación de la PA diastólica fue mayor con las pesas, pero no significativa (P=0.139). Los sedentarios mostraron incrementos mayores. Entre cada estación de pesas el comportamiento de las variables fue similar (P>0.05).Conclusión: El estudio evidenció que la respuesta cardiovascular aguda y la PSE de hipertensos durante un CRV fueron similares a las observadas con EA. Se observó que la respuesta presora al circuito de pesas fue menor en pacientes con entrenamiento aeróbico previo.

El presente trabajo es el resultado de un exhaustivo proceso investigativo a cerca de los factores de riesgo que predisponen al futbolista de alta competencia a padecer una entidad patológica severamente incapacitante como es la Pubalgia, la cual interfiere en el desempeño del mismo. Inicialmente el trabajo se centra en la revisión y comprensión de los conceptos básicos relacionados con salud, perfil del fisioterapeuta, actividad física, altas demandes cinéticas, anatomía y biomecánica normal de la Pélvis y sus alteraciones, definición de la Pubalgia, los principales factores de riesgo tanto intrínsecos como extrínsecos y el manejo médico y fisioterapéutico de esta entidad patológica.

Estudio sobre los beneficios de la lectura y el uso constante de textos literarios para la enseñanza del inglés en el nivel educativo de Secundaria. Los objetivos perseguidos son los siguientes: Aumentar la motivación y la implicación personal del alumno y, en consecuencia, incrementar el esfuerzo y la participación en clase. Incrementar la exposición 'auténtica' al inglés del alumnado. Desarrollar las distintas habilidades lectoras en inglés de abajo-arriba y de arriba-abajo. Favorecer la adquisición del vocabulario y la gramática de forma explícita e implícita. Mejorar en general su capacidad de reflexión lingüística y competencia comunicativa global. Relacionar la práctica de la lectura de textos creativos originales y el desarrollo de las capacidades de comprensión y expresión escrita. Conjugar el aprendizaje de la SL, su cultura y los aspectos sociolingüísticos. Desarrollar la autonomía en los procesos de aprendizaje. Buscar una dinámica de trabajo en clase más interactiva con una mayor variedad de actividades. Diseñar o seleccionar actividades de reflexión lingüística y tareas comunicativas que permitieran explotar todos los aspectos lingüísticos y estructurales de los textos literarios y sus contenidos. Establecer unos criterios para la adecuada selección de textos literarios atendiendo a los intereses y capacidades de la mayoría de las alumnas y alumnos. Los grupos de muestra han sido dos clases naturales de 1õ de Bachillerato, asignadas al azar por la Jefatura de Estudios del Instituto de las cinco existentes. Las variables independientes utilizadas son de dos tipos: los sujetos y sus características concretas y las que forman parte del experimento. Como variables dependientes las ganancias en la lengua meta a consecuencia del tratamiento pedagógico aplicado y el incremento de la motivación, el interés por la SL y su cultura, y la autonomía de los alumnos, valorados por los datos de la observación de clase, el cuestionario final y la entrevista personal. La variable de control, en este caso, es la propia profesora, que intenta en todo momento actuar de forma similar en ambos grupos, tanto en cuanto a la dedicación, preparación y entusiasmo de las clases, como a la exigencia requerida a los alumnos. Se ha intentado neutralizar las variables extrañas más significativas: los horarios de ambos grupos son muy parecidos, las fechas y el horario de las pruebas, los criterios de evaluación, los criterios de corrección de los exámenes, la misma forma de organizar y manejar la clase, el uso de inglés en clase y la misma relación profesora-alumnado. Los instrumentos de recogida de datos fueron los siguientes: Ficha personalizada del alumno con información personal, familiar y académica y registro de asistencia, participación, actitud, resultados de pruebas y exámenes (ambos grupos). Un cuestionario inicial sobre la actitud y motivación con respecto al aprendizaje del inglés, a sus necesidades y a las características del buen profesor (ambos grupos). Un cuestionario final sobre la metodología, los materiales más usados, los exámenes y la profesora (ambos grupos). Exámenes: un examen inicial de diagnóstico y otro final, ambos globales, diseñados con apartados de pruebas de comprensión lectora, comprensión oral, expresión escrita, vocabulario y gramática, conformando una muestra razonable de la competencia lingüística global de los alumnos (ambos grupos). Exámenes sobre los textos literarios leídos de forma extensiva obligatoria. Entrevista guiada en español sobre la experiencia (sólo grupo experimental). Portfolios o colecciones de los textos escritos como tareas creativas finales a partir de los textos literarios (sólo grupo experimental). Observación de la participación y la interacción de los alumnos (ambos grupos) recogida en la ficha. El esquema básico de trabajo en clase estaría articulado en cinco etapas: Introducción (warm-up), lectura del texto orientada a algún propósito, re-lectura del texto para realizar diversas actividades facilitadoras de tipo lingüístico y pre-lingüístico, interacción con el texto y los compañeros, y post-lectura y refuerzo. Al comparar los resultados de los dos grupos en el examen final global, que presenta una alta fiabilidad, éstos mostraban una ventaja a favor del experimental en todas las pruebas, en especial en las de lectura, escritura y vocabulario. La motivación de los alumnos del grupo experimental se incrementó debido a tres factores: los alumnos se sienten atraídos por estos textos, consideran que ofrecen un inglés más 'real' y muchas de las tareas son más atractivas y creadoras que las de los libros de texto. El incremento de la motivación revierte en gran medida en una mayor participación en el proceso de aprendizaje revierte en gran medida en una mayor participación en el proceso de aprendizaje y un mayor esfuerzo. Los datos subjetivos objetivos con los que se contaron no son suficientes para afirmar con rotundidad que la motivación y disponibilidad hacia el trabajo de los alumnos se haya incrementado en todos por igual. Las percepciones de los alumnos del grupo experimental en la entrevista indican que este tratamiento pedagógico les ha hecho trabajar de una de forma más independiente y autónoma. Los alumnos expresan en la entrevista que los textos literarios originales han sido más difíciles que los textos adaptados. De acuerdo con los datos subjetivos de la entrevista, muchos alumnos experimentales han leído los textos literarios con una mayor atención y, por tanto, al principio han dedicado más tiempo, pero conforme se iban familiarizando con su lectura, han leído más rápido y mejor. Los resultados de la prueba final, con relación a la escritura de los alumnos experimentales muestran una mejor organización textual y una mayor riqueza de vocabulario. El incremento del léxico fue el aspecto más llamativo de esta investigación: los resultados mostraron no sólo que hay una diferencia significativa entre ambos grupos, a favor del experimental, sino que además ésta fue muy notable. La mayoría de los alumnos son de la opinión de que si bien los textos presentan aspectos socioculturales propios de la cultura inglesa, también afirman que otra gran mayoría de textos tienen más que ver con temas universales que con los específicamente culturales. Según los datos cualitativos, los alumnos manifestaron que los textos literarios están abiertos a diversas interpretaciones, que a su vez van a fomentar respuestas más personales y creativas. Todos los datos cualitativos que los alumnos experimentales aportaron reflejan una mejora en el nivel de inglés, en especial en relación con el vocabulario..
