We explore the relationships between the construction of a work of art and the crafting of a computer program in Java and suggest that the structure of paintings and drawings may be used to teach the fundamental concepts of computer programming. This movement "from Art to Science", using art to drive computing, complements the common use of computing to inform art. We report on initial experiences using this approach with undergraduate and postgraduate students. An embryonic theory of the correspondence between art and computing is presented and a methodology proposed to develop this project further.

The work presented in this catalogue represent ten years of study, thought, practice and application. While each member of the fourth-year visual arts class has selected just one image and chosen only a few words for inclusion in this record of our graduates and the program, it is important that we understand the dimensions of experience and learning symbolized on these pages. The women and men represented here have all passed through a rigorous course of academic study, personal and professional development, and technical training. They have engaged issues and concepts from both theoretical and practical perspectives, and have been challenged to stretch their thinking about community, society and the world in terms past, present and future. These Students have translated ideas and insights into works of art in a variety of media.

The exhibition of works by Sir Wilfred Grenfell College's graduating Class in visual arts constitutes the culmination of four years of intensive study and practice. our students are trained in the fundamentals of their craft and exposed tio a variety of media and styles ranging from the traditional to the avant garde. But their education has more to do with the exploration and development of their creativity, the enlargement of their capacity to see, and their mastery of the vocabulary of sight, enabling them to discover, uncover and represent. Each of the students ha sustained and nurtured an individual and unique quest over the four years of this rigorous programme.

One of the Highlights of our academic year is the exhibition of the works of the graduating class in our visual arts degree program. Of course it is very Satisfying to see such an unambiguous evidence of accomplishments of our students. But i also find the exhibition invariably inspiring because of the works themselves, which stimulate us to see again as children, with wide-eyed curiosity and wonder, without the need to explain or reduce, with delight, with horror, with recognition. In enabling us to see again in this way, the students have learned a very demanding craft and educated themselves inthe history, vocabulary and syntax of visual expression.

Sir Wilfred Grenfell Colleges Fine Arts Division offers two BFA programs: visual arts and theatre. They are the only BFA degree programs available in the province. The bachoelor of Fine arts(Visual Arts)program is a professional program designed to educate and train students in the history, theory and practice of the visual arts. The curriculum has been devised to produce well-rounded generalists with solid grounding in all aspects of visual arts. The Curriculum illustrates the philosophy that artistic freedom and creative expression require technical skill, intellectual awareness and personal vision, acquired through a disciplined application of effort and critical understanding of artistic issues, past and present. Academic electives are tended to provide a broad exposure to the liberal arts.

One of the highlights of Grenfells annual Convocation is the exhibition of the works of the graduating class in visual arts. The exhibition gives us a priviledged glimpse into the accomplishments of our students as these have emerged directly out of their studies. By their nature, most other disciplines do not afford such a view. In a sense, then, the exhibition of works by our visual arts students represents by analogy what can be achieved in four years of intensive university study under the guidance of dedicated professionals, no matter what the field of endeavour. These particular students began with a natural ability to see and to imagine.During tha past four years, they have been challenged to build on that base talent and to develop and educate their visual imaginations. Significant creative development is never easy but the results can be inspiring. The works represent the accomplishments of all our students and provide a fresh energeticaesthetic framework within which to contemplate them.

Christine Schmidt uses swimwear to illustrate that the methodological practice of the assemblage of pattern pieces is inherent to the intellectual construction that underpins fashion's cultural and historical discourses. She argues that these common threads are woven together to shape the finished 'global' garment.

Inclusive education practices call for the diverse and individual needs of all students to be met satisfactorily. The needs and experiences of artistically talented students in Australian visual art classrooms are currently unknown. This study addresses this gap in research through an inquiry into the experiences of artistically talented students and their teachers in visual art classrooms, by examining the accounts of a group of students and teachers at one high school in South East Queensland. This study is significant as it provides teachers, parents and others involved in the education of artistically talented students with additional means to plan and cater for the educational needs of artistically talented students. Teacher and student accounts of the visual art classroom in this study indicated that identification processes for artistically talented students are unclear and contradictory. Furthermore, teacher and student accounts of their experiences presented a wide variety of conceptions of the visual art classroom and point towards an individualised approach to learning for artistically talented students. This study also discovered a mismatch between assessment practices in the subject visual art and assessment of art in the ‘real world’. Specifically, this study proposes a renewal of programs for artistically talented students, and recommends a revision of current procedures for the identification of artistically talented students in visual art classrooms.

Traditional pedagogies in the arts in higher education focus largely on the studio experience in which a novice artist studies under one or more master teachers (e.g., Don, Garvey, & Sadeghpour, 2009). In more recent times, however, a shift in higher education curriculum and pedagogy in the arts has expanded this traditional conservatory model of training to include, among other components, career self-management and enterprise creation—in a word, entrepreneurship. This chapter examines the developing field of arts enterprise and arts entrepreneurship in higher education in a multinational context. The field is contextualized within the broader landscape of the creative industries and the consequential development of knowledge, skills, and the habits of mind necessary for artistic venture creation, sustainability, and success. Whereas the discourse about learning and teaching for business entrepreneurship is well established (e.g., Fiet, 2001), equivalent conversations about arts enterprise and entrepreneurship have only recently begun (Beckman, 2007, 2011; Essig, 2009). This chapter will address the contested definitions of key terms and concepts and also the question of how arts educators, although mindful of the pedagogic traditions of the arts school, are also drawing on the pedagogies of business entrepreneurship and cognitive theories of entrepreneurship to create innovative new transdisciplinary signature pedagogies for creative enterprise and entrepreneurship education in the arts.

Many people aspire to careers in the arts and creative industries. However, it has long been known that it can be challenging to navigate a creative career: that competition for work can be intense, particularly for entry-level positions, and that success requires advanced skill sets in addition to a high degree of artistic talent and proficiency. In this article, Dr Ruth Bridgstock draws upon her doctoral and post-doctoral research to explore the challenges involved in building a creative career in Australia and suggest ways to support emerging creatives to build satisfying and sustainable careers.

A whole tradition is said to be based on the hierarchical distinction between the perceptual and conceptual. In art, Niklas Luhmann argues, this schism is played out and repeated in conceptual art. This paper complicates this depiction by examining Ian Burn's last writings in which I argue the artist-writer reviews the challenge of minimal-conceptual art in terms of its perceptual pre-occupations. Burn revisits his own work and the legacy of minimal-conceptual by moving away from the kind of ideology critique he is best known for internationally in order to reassert the long overlooked visual-perceptual preoccupations of the conceptual in art.

"Young Children, Pedagogy and the Arts is an innovative text that describes practices and research that cross all five strands of the artsvisual, drama, music, dance, and media—and illuminates ways of understanding children and their arts practices that go beyond the common traditions. The book: - Offers practical and rich illustrations of teachers’ and children’s work based on international research that integrates theory with practice; - Brings a critical lens to arts education; - Includes summaries, reflective questions, and recommended further readings with every chapter. Young Children, Pedagogy and the Arts provides a more nuanced understanding of the arts through an exploration of specific instances in which committed teachers and researchers are discovering what contemporary multimodal tools offer to young children. Chapters contain examples of ‘doing’ the arts in the early years, new ways of teaching, and how to use emerging technologies to develop multiliteracies, equity, agency, social and cultural capital, and enhance the learning and engagement of marginalized children."--publisher website
