The goal of this paper is to present an approximation scheme for a reaction-diffusion equation with finite delay, which has been used as a model to study the evolution of a population with density distribution u, in such a way that the resulting finite dimensional ordinary differential system contains the same asymptotic dynamics as the reaction-diffusion equation.

In literature the phenomenon of diffusion has been widely studied, however for nonextensive systems which are governed by a nonlinear stochastic dynamic, there are a few soluble models. The purpose of this study is to present the solution of the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation for a model of potential with barrier considering a term of absorption. Systems of this nature can be observed in various chemical or biological processes and their solution enriches the studies of existing nonextensive systems.

We show that the wavefunctions 〈pq; λ|n〈, of the harmonic oscillator in the squeezed state representation, have the generalized Hermite polynomials as their natural orthogonal polynomials. These wavefunctions lead to generalized Poisson Distribution Pn(pq;λ), which satisfy an interesting pseudo-diffusion equation: ∂Pnp,q;λ) ∂λ= 1 4 [ ∂2 ∂p2-( 1 λ2) ∂2 ∂q2]P2(p,q;λ), in which the squeeze parameter λ plays the role of time. Th entropies Sn(λ) have minima at the unsqueezed states (λ=1), which means that squeezing or stretching decreases the correlation between momentum p and position q. © 1992.

Background: The purpose of this study is to analyze the tension distribution on bone tissue around implants with different angulations (0 degrees, 17 degrees, and 30 degrees) and connections (external hexagon and tapered) through the use of three-dimensional finite element and statistical analyses. Methods: Twelve different configurations of three-dimensional finite element models, including three inclinations of the implants (0 degrees, 17 degrees, and 30 degrees), two connections (an external hexagon and a tapered), and two load applications (axial and oblique), were simulated. The maximum principal stress values for cortical bone were measured at the mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual regions around the implant for each analyzed situation, totaling 48 groups. Loads of 200 and 100 N were applied at the occlusal surface in the axial and oblique directions, respectively. Maximum principal stress values were measured at the bone crest and statistically analyzed using analysis of variance. Stress patterns in the bone tissue around the implant were analyzed qualitatively. Results: The results demonstrated that under the oblique loading process, the external hexagon connection showed significantly higher stress concentrations in the bone tissue (P < 0.05) compared with the tapered connection. Moreover, the buccal and mesial regions of the cortical bone concentrated significantly higher stress (P < 0.005) to the external hexagon implant type. Under the oblique loading direction, the increased external hexagon implant angulation induced a significantly higher stress concentration (P = 0.045).Conclusions: The study results show that: 1) the oblique load was more damaging to bone tissue, mainly when associated with external hexagon implants; and 2) there was a higher stress concentration on the buccal region in comparison to all other regions under oblique load.

Purpose Malposition of the acetabular component in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common surgical problem that can lead to hip dislocation, reduced range of motion and may result in early loosening. The aim of this study is to validate the accuracy and reproducibility of a single x-ray image based 2D/3D reconstruction technique in determining cup inclination and anteversion against two different computer tomography (CT)-based measurement techniques. Methods Cup anteversion and inclination of 20 patients after cementless primary THA was measured on standard anteroposterior (AP) radiographs with the help of the single x-ray 2D/3D reconstruction program and compared with two different 3D CT-based analyses [Ground Truth (GT) and MeVis (MV) reconstruction model]. Results The measurements from the single x-ray 2D/3D reconstruction technique were strongly correlated with both types of CT image-processing protocols for both cup inclination [R²=0.69 (GT); R²=0.59 (MV)] and anteversion [R²=0.89 (GT); R²=0.80 (MV)]. Conclusions The single x-ray image based 2D/3D reconstruction technique is a feasible method to assess cup position on postoperative x-rays. CTscans remain the golden standard for a more complex biomechanical evaluation when a lower tolerance limit (+/-2 degrees) is required.

ABSTRACT Extensive research has been performed to solve the atmospheric chemicaladvection- diffusion equation and different numerical methods have been proposed. This Thesis presents the implementation of an exactly conservative method for the advection equation in the European scale Eulerian chemistry transport model CHIMERE based on a rational interpolation and a finite volume algorithm. The advantage of the method is that the cell-integrated average is predicted via a flux formulation, thus the mass is exactly conserved. Numerical results are compared with a set of observation registered at some monitoring sites in Spain. The mean normalized bias and the mean normalized absolute error present values that are inside the range to consider an accurate model performance. In addition, it has been introduced a new method to solve the advectiondiffusion equation. It is based on a high-order accurate finite difference method to solve de diffusion equation together with a rational interpolation and a finite volume to solve the advection equation in one dimension and two dimensions. Numerical results obtained from solving several problems include academic and real atmospheric problems have been compared with the analytical solution of the advection-diffusion equation, showing that the new method give an efficient algorithm for solving such problems. Finally, a complete model has been developed to solve the atmospheric chemical-advection-diffusion equation, adding the conservative method for the advection equation, the high-order finite difference method for the diffusion equation and a second-order backward differentiation formula (BDF2) to solve the atmospheric chemical kinetics. The BDF2 is an implicit, second order multistep backward differentiation formula used to solve the stiff systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) from atmospheric chemistry. The Gauss-Seidel iteration is used for approximately solving the implicitly defined BDF solution, giving a faster tool than the more commonly used iterative modified Newton technique. This method implies low start-up costs and a low memory demand due to the use of Gauss-Seidel iteration.
