Assessing a full set of mechanical properties is a rather complicate task in the case of foams, especially if material models must be calibrated with these results. Many issues, for example anisotropy and heterogeneity, influence the mechanical behavior. This article shows through experimental analyses how the microstructure affects different experimental setups and it also quantifies the degree of anisotropy of a poly(vinyl chloride) foam. Monotonic and cyclic experimental tests were carried out using standard compression specimens and non-standard tensile specimens. Results are complemented and compared with the aid of a digital image correlation technique and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Mechanical properties (e.g., elastic and plastic Poisson's ratios) are evaluated for compression and tensile tests, for two different material directions (normal and in-plane). The material is found to be transversely isotropic. Differences in the results of the mechanical properties can be as high as 100%, or even more depending on the technique used and the loading direction. Also, the experimental analyses show how the material's microstructure behavior, like the evolution of the herein identified yield fronts and a spring back phenomenon, can influence the phenomenological response and the failure mechanisms as well as the hardening curves. This paper emphasizes the influence of micro mechanisms of failure of a cellular material on its phenomenological response. Most of the applications of cellular materials comprise a compression loading. Thus, the study focuses on the influence of the anisotropy in the mechanical behavior of cellular material under cyclic compression loadings. For this study, a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique (named Correli) was applied, as well as SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) images were analyzed. The experimental results are discussed in detail for a closed-cell rigid poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) foam, showing stress-strain curves in different directions and why the material can be assumed as transversely isotropic. Besides, the present paper shows elastic and plastic Poisson's ratios measured in different planes, explaining why the plastic Poisson's ratios approach to zero. Yield fronts created by the compression loadings in different directions and the influence of spring-back phenomenon on hardening curves are commented, also.

The purpose of this article is to present a method which consists in the development of unit cell numerical models for smart composite materials with piezoelectric fibers made of PZT embedded in a non-piezoelectric matrix (epoxy resin). This method evaluates a globally homogeneous medium equivalent to the original composite, using a representative volume element (RVE). The suitable boundary conditions allow the simulation of all modes of the overall deformation arising from any arbitrary combination of mechanical and electrical loading. In the first instance, the unit cell is applied to predict the effective material coefficients of the transversely isotropic piezoelectric composite with circular cross section fibers. The numerical results are compared to other methods reported in the literature and also to results previously published, in order to evaluate the method proposal. In the second step, the method is applied to calculate the equivalent properties for smart composite materials with square cross section fibers. Results of comparison between different combinations of circular and square fiber geometries, observing the influence of the boundary conditions and arrangements are presented.

We propose a computationally efficient and biomechanically relevant soft-tissue simulation method for cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) surgery. A template-based facial muscle reconstruction was introduced to minimize the efforts on preparing a patient-specific model. A transversely isotropic mass-tensor model (MTM) was adopted to realize the effect of directional property of facial muscles in reasonable computation time. Additionally, sliding contact around teeth and mucosa was considered for more realistic simulation. Retrospective validation study with postoperative scan of a real patient showed that there were considerable improvements in simulation accuracy by incorporating template-based facial muscle anatomy and sliding contact.

Based on our needs, that is to say, through precise simulation of the impact phenomena that may occur inside a jet engine turbine with an explicit non-linear finite element code, four new material models are postulated. Each one of is calibrated for four high-performance alloys that can be encountered in a modern jet engine. A new uncoupled material model for high strain and ballistic is proposed. Based on a Johnson-Cook type model, the proposed formulation introduces the effect of the third deviatoric invariant by means of three different Lode angle dependent functions. The Lode dependent functions are added to both plasticity and failure models. The postulated model is calibrated for a 6061-T651 aluminium alloy with data taken from the literature. The fracture pattern predictability of the JCX material model is shown performing numerical simulations of various quasi-static and dynamic tests. As an extension of the above-mentioned model, a modification in the thermal softening behaviour due to phase transformation temperatures is developed (JCXt). Additionally, a Lode angle dependent flow stress is defined. Analysing the phase diagram and high temperature tests performed, phase transformation temperatures of the FV535 stainless steel are determined. The postulated material model constants for the FV535 stainless steel are calibrated. A coupled elastoplastic-damage material model for high strain and ballistic applications is presented (JCXd). A Lode angle dependent function is added to the equivalent plastic strain to failure definition of the Johnson-Cook failure criterion. The weakening in the elastic law and in the Johnson-Cook type constitutive relation implicitly introduces the Lode angle dependency in the elastoplastic behaviour. The material model is calibrated for precipitation hardened Inconel 718 nickel-base superalloy. The combination of a Lode angle dependent failure criterion with weakened constitutive equations is proven to predict fracture patterns of the mechanical tests performed and provide reliable results. A transversely isotropic material model for directionally solidified alloys is presented. The proposed yield function is based a single linear transformation of the stress tensor. The linear operator weighs the degree of anisotropy of the yield function. The elastic behaviour, as well as the hardening, are considered isotropic. To model the hardening, a Johnson-Cook type relation is adopted. A material vector is included in the model implementation. The failure is modelled with the Cockroft-Latham failure criterion. The material vector allows orienting the reference orientation in any other that the user may need. The model is calibrated for the MAR-M 247 directionally solidified nickel-base superalloy.

In this research a material model for directionally solidified alloys with transversely isotropic mechanic behavior is presented. In order to characterize the mechanical behavior of the Mar-M 247 directionally solidified nickel based superalloy, tensile tests of axisymmetric smooth specimens were performed at various strain rates and temperatures. The specimens were machined making sure that the longitudinal axis of them was forming 0º and 90º with the grain growth orientation. To represent the plastic flow, a non-quadratic anisotropic function based on linear transformation of tensors has been formulated. For the sake of simplicity isotropic strain hardening of the material has been considered. To prove the validity of the model, a material subroutine has been implemented in LS-DYNA non-linear finite element code as a user defined material model.

In this paper we describe a new promising procedure to model hyperelastic materials from given stress-strain data. The main advantage of the proposed method is that the user does not need to have a relevant knowledge of hyperelasticity, large strains or hyperelastic constitutive modelling. The engineer simply has to prescribe some stress strain experimental data (whether isotropic or anisotropic) in also user prescribed stress and strain measures and the model almost exactly replicates the experimental data. The procedure is based on the piece-wise splines model by Sussman and Bathe and may be easily generalized to transversely isotropic and orthotropic materials. The model is also amenable of efficient finite element implementation. In this paper we briefly describe the general procedure, addressing the advantages and limitations. We give predictions for arbitrary ?experimental data? and also give predictions for actual experiments of the behaviour of living soft tissues. The model may be also implemented in a general purpose finite element program. Since the obtained strain energy functions are analytic piece-wise functions, the constitutive tangent may be readily derived in order to be used for implicit static problems, where the equilibrium iterations must be performed and the material tangent is needed in order to preserve the quadratic rate of convergence of Newton procedures.

In the present work four main problems have been addressed within the framework of non-linear elasticity based on representative constitutive models. Namely, problems related to the loss of stability phenomena associated with boundary value problems for fibre-reinforced materials. Each of the considered problems is formulated and analysed separately in different chapters. We first start with the analysis of discontinuous deformation gradients for a transversely isotropic material under plane deformation. In particular, the material model is an augmented neo-Hookean base with a simple unidirectional reinforcement characterised by a single parameter. The solution of this problem is related to material instabilities and it is associated with a shear band-type failure mode. The loss of ellipticity of the governing differential equations is a necessary condition for the existence of these material instabilities. The second problem involves a detailed analysis of the combined non-linear extension, inflation and torsion of a thick-walled circular cylindrical tube where it has been found that the aforementioned deformation is controllable only for certain preferred directions of transverse isotropy. Numerical results have been illustrated to understand the elastic behaviour of the tube for the admissible preferred directions under the considered deformation. The third problem deals with the analysis of a doubly fibre-reinforced thickwalled circular cylindrical tube undergoing pure azimuthal shear for a special class of the reinforcing model where multiple non-smooth solutions emerge. The associated instability phenomena are found to occur prior to the point where the nominal stress tensor changes monotonicity in a particular direction. It has been also shown that the loss of ellipticity condition that arises from the equilibrium equation and ^W=2 = 0 (the second derivative of the strain-energy function with respect to the deformation) are equivalent necessary conditions for the emergence of multiple solutions for the considered material. Finally, a detailed analysis in the basis of the loss of ellipticity of the governing differential equations for a combined helical, axial and radial elastic deformations of a fibre-reinforced circular cylindrical tube is carried out.

Forty indurated sediment samples from Site 516 were studied to determine the cause of acoustic anisotropy in carbonate- bearing deep-sea sediments. Recovered from sub-bottom depths between 388 and 1222 m, the samples have properties exhibiting the following ranges: wet-bulk density, 1.90-2.49 g/cm3; fractional porosity, 0.45-0.14; carbonate content, 33-88%; compressional-wave velocity (at 0.1 kbar pressure), 1.87-4.87 km/s; and anisotropy, 1-13%. Velocities were measured in three mutually perpendicular directions through the same specimen in 29 of the 40 samples studied. Calcite fabric has been estimated by X-ray pole figure goniometry. The major findings of this study are: 1) Carbonate-bearing deep-sea sediments may be regarded as transversely isotropic media with symmetry axes normal to bedding. 2) Calcite c-axes are weakly concentrated in a direction perpendicular to bedding, but the preferred orientation of calcite does not contribute significantly to velocity anisotropy. 3) The properties of bedded and unbedded samples are distinctly different. Unbedded sediments exhibit low degrees of acoustic anisotropy (1-5%). By contrast, bedded samples show higher degrees of anisotropy (to 13%), and anisotropy increases markedly with depth of burial. Thus, bedding must be regarded as the principal cause of acoustic anisotropy in calcareous, deep-sea sediments.

Based on Reddy's third-order theory, the first-order theory and the classical theory, exact explicit eigenvalues are found for compression buckling, thermal buckling and vibration of laminated plates via analogy with membrane vibration, These results apply to symmetrically laminated composite plates with transversely isotropic laminae and simply supported polygonal edges, Comprehensive consideration of a Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation, a hydrostatic inplane force, an initial temperature increment and rotary inertias is incorporated. Bridged by the vibrating membrane, exact correspondences are readily established between any pairs of buckling and vibration eigenvalues associated with different theories. Positive definiteness of the critical hydrostatic pressure at buckling, the thermobukling temperature increment and, in the range of either tension loading or compression loading prior to occurrence of buckling, the natural vibration frequency is proved. Fire has been always a major concern for designers of steel and concrete structures. Designing fire-resistant structural elements is not an easy task due to several limitations such as the lack of fire-resistant construction materials. Concrete reinforcement cover and external insulation are the most commonly adopted systems to protect concrete and steel from overheating, while spalling of concrete is minimised by using HPFRC instead of standard concrete. Although these methodologies work very well for low rise concrete structures, this is not the case for high-rise and inaccessible buildings where fire loading is much longer. Fire can permanently damage structures that cost a lot of money. This is unsafe and can lead to loss of life. In this research, the author proposes a new type of main reinforcement for concrete structures which can provide better fire-resistance than steel or FRP re-bars. This consists of continuous braided fibre rope, generally made from fire-resistant materials such as carbon or glass fibre. These fibres have excellent tensile strengths, sometimes in excess of ten times greater than steel. In addition to fire-resistance, these ropes can produce lighter and corrosive resistant structures. Avoiding the use of expensive resin binders, fibres are easily bound together using braiding techniques, ensuring that tensile stress is evenly distributed throughout the reinforcement. In order to consider braided ropes as a form of reinforcement it is first necessary to establish the mechanical performance at room temperature and investigate the pull-out resistance for both unribbed and ribbed ropes. Ribbing of ropes was achieved by braiding the rope over a series of glass beads. Adhesion between the rope and concrete was drastically improved due to ribbing, and further improved by pre-stressing ropes and reducing the slacked fibres. Two types of material have been considered for the ropes: carbon and aramid. An implicit finite element approach is proposed to model braided fibres using Total Lagrangian formulation, based on the theory of small strains and large rotations. Modelling tows and strands as elastic transversely isotropic materials was a good assumption when stiff and brittle fibres such as carbon and glass fibres are considered. The rope-to-concrete and strand-to-strand bond interaction/adhesion was numerically simulated using newly proposed hierarchical higher order interface elements. Elastic and linear damage cohesive models were used effectively to simulate non-penetrative 'free' sliding interaction between strands, and the adhesion between ropes and concrete respectively. Numerical simulation showed similar de-bonding features when compared with experimental pull-out results of braided ribbed rope reinforced concrete.

This paper presents a continuous isotropic spherical omnidirectional drive mechanism that is efficient in its mechanical simplicity and use of volume. Spherical omnidirectional mechanisms allow isotropic motion, although many are limited from achieving true isotropic motion by practical mechanical design considerations. The mechanism presented in this paper uses a single motor to drive a point on the great circle of the sphere parallel to the ground plane, and does not require a gearbox. Three mechanisms located 120 degrees apart provide a stable drive platform for a mobile robot. Results show the omnidirectional ability of the robot and demonstrate the performance of the spherical mechanism compared to a popular commercial omnidirectional wheel over edges of varying heights and gaps of varying widths.
