This paper explores the theme of strategic planning in a State Tourism Organization (STO) from a knowledge management perspective. It highlights the value of knowledge in strategy making and the importance of an organisation's knowledge management agenda in facilitating a strategic planning process. In particular, it considers the capability of an STO to implement knowledge management as the key to a successful strategic planning exercise. In order to develop greater insight into the factors that impact on planning competence, the key aim of this paper is to develop a framework on which the capability of a STO to implement a knowledge-based agenda in strategic planning can be assessed. Research on knowledge management in the field of tourism is limited and there is little practical account of the application of knowledge management principles in tourism planning. Further, there is no apparent tool or instrument that allows for the assessment of an STO's capability to implement knowledge management in planning initiatives. Based on a literature review, a three-point framework of assessment is developed. The three elements of the framework are identified as: 1. Integration of knowledge management objectives with strategic imperatives; 2. A planning approach that balances top-down (outcome focused) with bottom-up (process focused) planning processes; and 3. Organisational capacity, including leadership, people and culture, process, technology, content and continuous improvement. The framework is tested through application to a practical case study - a planning initiative undertaken by a leading tourism STO in Australia. The results demonstrate that the framework is a useful means to evaluate organisational capability in knowledge-led strategic planning exercises and would be of practical value as a point of reference for future knowledge- based strategic planning projects. Spanish tourist destinations in rural areas have been established over more than two decades of implementation of various public policy instruments (mainly tourism and rural development policies). These convey complementary objectives in theory but provoke distant results in practice. The intervention of these instruments produces in the region of Sierra de Albarracín (Teruel) two types of destination whose sustainability is committed: the historical urban site of Albarracín as a consolidated cultural tourism destination based on heritage and the Sierra as a generic and incipient destination of rural tourism. It is discussed how the deployment of the local public action causes a fragmented territory in two models of management and tourism development. Cooperation is presented as a key element for the necessary rethinking of tourism development in the region.

This study proposes a conceptual framework that explores the correlations between economic dependence (ED), local government management of tourism (GMT), perceived tourism benefits and costs, and support for sustainable tourism development (STD). A quantitative research design was adopted. Data collection was carried out by personal survey applied to 300 residents of the small historic town of Lamego, located within the Douro Valley World Heritage Site. Structural equation modelling methods were employed to analyse the proposed model. Results suggest that GMT has a significant effect on the perceived impacts of tourism, both in the positive and in the negative. The effect of GMT in fostering residents’ support to STD was also empirically supported. Additionally, it was also determined that positive perceptions of the impacts of tourism directly influence support to STD. Nevertheless, ED does not have a significant effect either on perceivedbenefits, nor on perceived costs or on residents’ support to STD. Likewise, perceptions of the negative impacts do not predict residents’ support to STD.

This internship report aim was to find out the importance of sustainable tourism practices from a tourist point of view. The research study and internship took place at Back-Roads Touring - a tour operator (based in London) that specializes in small group touring for seniors travellers from Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada. Google Forms online questionnaire was used in order to answer the objectives of the study. In total 1322 clients received an online questionnaire out of which 182 filled in the survey. The study had four objectives, however the main focus was to find out which tourism practices ( out of 15 choices) were the most important to the respondents during a Back-Roads Tour and which tourism options (using the same 15 choices) the respondents identify as sustainable tourism options ( objective 2 and 3). The results showed that the respondents valued the most small group touring and having an experienced tour leader, which are the core practices of the company. Furthermore, the respondents were not seeking for more sustainable tourism practices neither willing to donate money to local charities/non- profit organizations. This finding shows that the clients are content with a current model of a tour, are willing to return, however price and quality will be play a key role in the decision. The respondents´ lack of wish to support or donate money to charities /non-profit organizations, could be due to the fact that most of the clients were from middle class thus they did not have enough disposable income. Moreover, one of the objectives of this study was to find out if the clients valued sustainable tourism certification. The results showed that the respondents’ were not aware of the sustainable tourism certification that the company obtained, however slightly over half of the respondents said that the knowledge of the certification has positively influenced them to travel again with a company.

ABSTRACT One way or another the process of planning has been implied in the development of tourism, although its application has not been absolutely successful. Also the revaluation that the planning is having in different scopes, public and private, and tourism is not free from it either, but still it requires modifications in the methods and techniques to be applied to a sustainable tourism. The modifications in the methods for the planning of the sustainable tourism in the Region of Coquimbo constitute the object of this investigation. The research establishes as hypothesis: “The integration of planning methodologies with the principles of the sustainable tourism would allow to generate a model of sustainable tourist planning, that incorporates the values of the territory, the needs of the visitors, the participation of the receiving community and is applicable to the Region of Coquimbo through a territorial-methodologic frame”. From this hypothesis, the general objective is defined: To make a proposal of a territorial-methodologic frame for the sustainable tourist planning in the Region of Coquimbo. From this general objective the specific objectives related to the analysis of the concepts and theoretical approaches of the planning applied to the tourism are deduced; the study of the planning tools of the tourist development of the Region of Coquimbo; the determination of categories and structural elements and the elaboration of a territorial-methodologic frame of the planning for the development of the sustainable tourism in the Region of Coquimbo. The methodology of the investigation is of qualitative character, is related mainly to the based theory or grounded theory and to the procedural theories of the planning. Both methodologies were used in the construction of the generic model and in the elaboration of the procedural-territorial frame. The construction of the generic model assimilated with the one of the theory in grounded theory and thus, concepts from the theoretical conceptual frame were generated (conceptualization or abstraction); categories of procedural, territorial analysis were constructed and of sustainable tourism (open codification), procedural-territorial syntheses categories were elaborated and of sustainable tourism (axial codification); the relational dynamics of the procedural-territorial categories was analyzed (selective codification) and the generic model of sustainable tourism planning was established (theory), that counts with two submodels: the General Conditions submodel and the Stages of planning submodel. From the generic model the categories defined and related in dynamic way were hierarchized, according to the characteristics of the Region of Coquimbo. Together with the recommended requirements of sustainable tourism done by The National Service of Tourism (SERNATUR) were included at national, regional level and communal and the absent stages in the formulated plans of tourist development in the Region were included, to give rise to the applied procedural-territorial frame in the Region of Coquimbo. The research gives as a result a planning methodology for sustainable tourism (generic model), that when being applied to a given territorial system, as it is the Region of Coquimbo, it generates a new specific planning methodology for the sustainable tourism of this region (procedural-territorial frame). The generic model could be applicable to any territory inside or outside the Region of Coquimbo, standing out its own values, the needs of the visitors and the participation of the community generating its own procedural-territorial frames (considering the own features of the territories, the requirements of the sustainable tourism and correcting the mistakes of the previous existing planning in that particular territory).

In administering their territories, most local municipalities aim to preserve their natural, historical and ethnographical resources while simultaneously using them to increase revenue and employment. In order to efficiently promote the products and services available and attract tourists, decision makers, private and public, need to know and incorporate tourists’ preferences in their marketing strategies. In this chapter we illustrate the use of stated preferences as an instrument to identify national and foreign tourists’ preferences regarding the products and services that the touristic destination of the Minho-Lima region (Northwest Portugal) should offer. As a starting point, we have taken the three general groups of touristic resources mentioned above as attributes. We take Ponte de Lima, a municipality in this region that has a strong cultural tourism potential as an example to identify possible future tourism scenarios for this territory. We believe the previously identified methodology can be a valuable instrument in the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the selected territory and, thus, support the decision making process behind its future tourist development and marketing strategies.

The present study analyzes residential models in coastal areas with large influxes of tourism, the sustainability of their planning and its repercussion on urban values. The project seeks to establish a methodology for territorial valuation through the analysis of externalities that have influenced urban growth and its impact on the formation of residential real estate values. This will make it possible to create a map for qualitative land valuation, resulting from a combination of environmental, landscape, social and productive valuations. This in turn will establish a reference value for each of the areas in question, as well as their spatial interrelations. These values become guidelines for the study of different territorial scenarios, which help improve the sustainable territorial planning process. This is a rating scale for urban planning. The results allow us to establish how the specific characteristics of the coast are valued and how they can be incorporated into sustainable development policies.
