An experiment was conducted to study the effects of liming and drying method on Ca nutrition, fungus infection and aflatoxin production potential on peanut (Arachis hypogea) grains. Peanut cv. Botutatu was grown in the absence or presence of liming to raise the base saturation of the soil from 20 to 56%. Calcium contents of the soil were increased from 5.5 to 14.6 mmol((c))kg-1 and pH from 4.2 to 4.9. After harvest, plants and pods were dried in (1) shade, (2) field down to 100 g water kg-1 (3) field down to 250 g water kg-1 and transferred to a forced-air oven at 30°C, (4) field down to 360 g water kg-1 and transferred to a forced-air oven at 30°C. Calcium contents were analyzed in the grains, pericarps and seed coats. The incidence of Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp., Rhizopus spp. and potential aflatoxin production in vitro were evaluated, as well as the seed coat thickness. The seed coat was thicker when peanut was grown in the presence of lime, leading to a decrease in seed infection by Aspergillus spp. and Penicillium spp. When plants were dried in shade, the growth of aflatoxinogenic fungi was independent of liming. However, in plants dried in the field or field + oven, the development of these fungi was decreased and even suppressed when the Ca content of the seed coat was increased from 2.2 to 5.5 g kg-1.

The problem of power system stability including the effects of a flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) is approached. First, the controlled series compensation is considered in the machine against infinite bar system and its effects are taken into account by means of construction of a Lyapunov function (LF). This simple system is helpful in order to understand the form the device affects dynamic and transient performance of the power system. After, the multimachine case is considered and it is shown that the single-machine results apply to multimachine systems. An energy-form Lyapunov function is derived for the power system including the FACTS device and it is used to analyse damping and synchronizing effects due to the FACTS device in single-machine as well as in multimachine power systems. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of this prospective study was to determine the DNA fragmentation levels before and after sperm preparation by layering method. A total of 78 patients submitted to assisted reproduction technology (ART) for infertility treatment were evaluated. Ejaculated spermatozoa were obtained by masturbation on the day of ART procedure. The evaluation of DNA fragmentation was performed in the fresh semen and after preparation by a layering method, respectively. After washing with PBS, the sperm pellets were smears and then processed for the terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick-end labelling (TUNEL) assay that was performed using a Cell Death Detection Kit with tetramethylrhodamine-labelled dUTP. For quantitative evaluation, 200 spermatozoa in randomly selected areas on microscope slides were evaluated and the percentage of TUNEL positive spermatozoa was determined. If ≥20% of selected sperm were TUNEL positive, the exam was considered abnormal. The mean percentage of DNA sperm fragmentation before sperm preparation was 17±8.3% and after 7.8±6.5% (p<0.0001). The exam was considered normal in 49 patients before preparation and in 73 patients after (p<0.0001). The sperm preparation with a layering method for the ART procedure is effective to select sperm with a significant decrease of the DNA damage.

This paper focuses on the magnetoelectric coupling (ME) at room temperature in lanthanum modified bismuth ferrite thin film (BLFO) deposited on SrRuO 3-buffered Pt/TiO 2/SiO 2/Si(100) substrates by the soft chemical method. BLFO film was coherently grown at a temperature of 500 °C. The magnetoelectric coefficient measurement was performed to evidence magnetoelectric coupling behavior. Room temperature magnetic coercive field indicates that the film is magnetically soft. The maximum magnetoelectric coefficient in the longitudinal direction was close to 12 V/cmOe. Dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss demonstrated only slight dispersion with frequency due the less two-dimensional stress in the plane of the film. Polarization reversal was investigated by applying dc voltage through a conductive tip during the area scanning. We observed that various types of domain behavior such as 71 ° and 180° domain switching, and pinned domain formation occurred. Copyright © 2009 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.

The objective of this study was to investigate the role of GnRH on the preimplantation development of mouse embryos in vitro. GnRH-I, GnRH-II, and GnRH agonists: Des-Gly, Des-Trp and histrelin did not improve embryo development. However, treatment with the specific GnRH antagonist SB-75 blocked embryo development at morula stage. The inhibition of embryo development by SB-75 could be rescued by the addition of histrelin. To determine which intracellular signaling cascade is involved following binding of GnRH to the GnRHR, embryos were cultured in the presence of specific PKC (GFX) or PKA (SQ22536) inhibitors. The PKC inhibitor blocked embryo development at a similar stage as SB-75, whereas SQ22536 had an inhibitory effect, diminishing blastocyst formation and hatched rates. There are evidences that GnRH has an essential autocrine effect on mouse embryonic development via GnRHR, probably by activating PKC signaling cascade while the inhibition of the GnRH signaling does not activate apoptotic mechanisms involving caspase-3. In another experiment, development in vitro of embryos from Chinese Meishan (M) and occidental white crossbred (WC) females were investigated after improving the vitrification protocol for pig embryos. Efficient cryopreservation of zona pellucida-intact porcine embryos and studies of the difference among breeds could greatly impact the swine industry. The percentage of embryos surviving 24 h after cryopreservation without lysis or degeneration was higher for M (72%) than WC (44%). However, in vitro development of embryos that survived cryopreservation was not different between M and WC at the expanded (64%) or hatched (22%) blastocyst stages. Developmental rates were significantly higher for control embryos than frozen embryos from both breeds at expanded blastocyst stage, but not at hatched blastocyst stage. Rates of expanded blastocyst formation did not differ between M and WC control embryos (98 and 95%, respectively). With a new procedure to warm vitrified pig embryos, the survival rates may be improved. The optimal stages to vitrify pig embryos using the microdroplet method ranges from late compact morula to early expanded blastocyst. The results suggest that M embryos have a higher capacity to survive the vitrification process than WC embryos.

Catalysts containing 10%Co supported on CexZr1-xO2 (0 < x < 1) were applied to ethanol steam reforming reactions. The catalysts were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, XANES-H-2 and DRS-UV-Vis. The catalytic tests were conducted at 673, 773 and 873 K, with molar ratios of H2O:ethanol = 3:1. The ethanol conversion and H-2 selectivity were temperature dependent and the association of CeO2 with ZrO2 in the support led to show a low formation of CO, due to the higher mobility of oxygen. Perceived duration is assumed to be positively related to nontemporal stimulus magnitude. Most recently, the finding that larger stimuli are perceived to last longer has been challenged to represent a mere decisional bias induced by the use of comparative duration judgments. Therefore, in the present study, the method of temporal reproduction was applied as a psychophysical procedure to quantify perceived duration. Another major goal was to investigate the influence of attention on the effect of visual stimulus size on perceived duration. For this purpose, an additional dual-task paradigm was employed. Our results not only converged with previous findings in demonstrating a functional positive relationship between nontemporal stimulus size and perceived duration, but also showed that the effect of stimulus size on perceived duration was not confined to comparative duration judgments. Furthermore, the effect of stimulus size proved to be independent of attentional resources allocated to stimulus size; nontemporal visual stimulus information does not need to be processed intentionally to influence perceived duration. Finally, the effect of nontemporal stimulus size on perceived duration was effectively modulated by the duration of the target intervals, suggesting a hitherto largely unrecognized role of temporal context for the effect of nontemporal stimulus size to become evident.
