The d15N of surface and down-core sediments spanning the last 20-200 kyr from the entire South China Sea (SCS) ranges only from ~3.0 to ~6.5 per mil, with no correlation with discernible paleoclimatic/oceanographic changes. Detailed profiles of the uppermost sediment column, including fluff samples, indicate a minor diagenetic overprint of 0.3-1.2 per mil at the sediment-water interface. The absence of any correlation with reconstructed (glacial-interglacial) changes in primary production, terrigenous input, and/or sea level related basin configuration is attributed to a complete consumption of nitrate during primary production in this marginal basin during at least the last 140,000 years. This, in turn, implies that the d15N of the nitrate used during primary production remained approximately constant during the last climatic cycle. The proposed scenario infers an unchanged nitrogen isotopic composition of the western Pacific subsurface nitrate between glacial and interglacial stages as well as during terminations and thus constrains proposed changes in the oceanic N inventory.

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is key to the mixing and ventilation of the world's oceans. This current flows from west to east between about 45° and 70° S connecting the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, and is driven by westerly winds and buoyancy forcing. High levels of productivity in the current regulate atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Reconstructions of the current during the last glacial period suggest that flow speeds were faster or similar to present, and it is uncertain whether the strength and position of the westerly winds changed. Here we reconstruct Antarctic Circumpolar Current bottom speeds through the constricting Drake Passage and Scotia Sea during the Last Glacial Maximum and Holocene based on the mean grain size of sortable silt from a suite of sediment cores. We find essentially no change in bottom flow speeds through the region, and, given that the momentum imparted by winds, and modulated by sea-ice cover, is balanced by the interaction of these flows with the seabed, this argues against substantial changes in wind stress. However, glacial flow speeds in the sea-ice zone south of 56° S were significantly slower than present, whereas flow in the north was faster, but not significantly so. We suggest that slower flow over the rough topography south of 56° S may have reduced diapycnal mixing in this region during the last glacial period, possibly reducing the diapycnal contribution to the Southern Ocean overturning circulation.

Long-term evolution is thought to take opportunities that arise as a consequence of mass extinction (as argued, for example, by Gould, 2002) and the following biotic recovery, but there is absolutely no evidence for this being the case. However, our study shows that eutrophication by oceanic mixing also played a part in the enhancement of several evolutionary events amongst marine organisms, and these results could indicate that the rates of oceanic biodiversification may be slowed if upwelling becomes weakened by future global warming. This paper defines three distinct evolutionary events of resting spores of the marine diatom genus Chaetoceros, to reconstruct past upwelling through the analysis of several DSDP, ODP and land-based successions from the North, South and equatorial Pacific as well as the Atlantic Ocean during the past 40 million years. The Atlantic Chaetoceros Explosion (ACE) event occurred across the E/O boundary in the North Atlantic, and is characterized by resting spore diversification that occurred as a consequence of the onset of upwelling following changes in thermohaline circulation through global cooling in the early Oligocene. Pacific Chaetoceros Explosion events-1 and -2 (PACE-1 and PACE-2) are characterized by relatively higher occurrences of iron input following the Himalayan uplift and aridification at 8.5 Ma and ca. 2.5 Ma in the North Pacific region. These events not only enhanced the diversification and increased abundance of primary producers, including that of Chaetoceros, other diatoms and seaweeds, but also stimulated the evolution of zooplankton and larger predators, such as copepods and marine mammals, which ate these phytoplankton and plants. Current thinking suggests new evolutionary niches open up after a mass extinction, but our study finds that eutrophication can also stimulate evolutionary diversification. Moreover, in the opposite fashion, our results show that as thermohaline circulation abates, global warming progresses and the ocean surface becomes warmer, many marine organisms will be affected by the environmental degradation.

The Baltic Sea has experienced three major intervals of bottom water hypoxia following the intrusion of seawater ca. 8 kyrs ago. These intervals occurred during the Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM), Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and during recent decades. Here, we show that sequestration of both Fe and Mn in Baltic Sea sediments generally increases with water depth, and we attribute this to shelf-to-basin transfer ("shuttling") of Fe and Mn. Burial of Mn in slope and basin sediments was enhanced following the lake-brackish/marine transition at the beginning of the hypoxic interval during the HTM. During hypoxic intervals, shelf-to-basin transfer of Fe was generally enhanced but that of Mn was reduced. However, intensification of hypoxia within hypoxic intervals led to decreased burial of both Mn and Fe in deep basin sediments. This implies a non-linearity in shelf Fe release upon expanding hypoxia with initial enhanced Fe release relative to oxic conditions followed by increased retention in shelf sediments, likely in the form of iron sulfide minerals. For Mn, extended hypoxia leads to more limited sequestration as Mn carbonate in deep basin sediments, presumably because of more rapid reduction of Mn oxides formed after inflows and subsequent escape of dissolved Mn to the overlying water. Our Fe records suggest that modern Baltic Sea hypoxia is more widespread than in the past. Furthermore, hypoxia-driven variations in shelf-to-basin transfer of Fe may have impacted the dynamics of P and sulfide in the Baltic Sea thus providing potential feedbacks on the further development of hypoxia.

Biological productivity in the modern equatorial Pacific Ocean, a region with high nutrients and low chlorophyll, is currently limited by the micronutrient Fe. In order to test whether Fe was limiting in the past and to identify potential pathways of Fe delivery that could drive Fe fertilization (i.e., dust delivery from eolian inputs vs. Fe supplied by the Equatorial Undercurrent), we chemically isolated the terrigenous material from sediment along a cross-equatorial transect in the central equatorial Pacific at 140°W and at Ocean Drilling Program Site 850 in the eastern equatorial Pacific. We quantified the contribution from each potential Fe-bearing terrigenous source using a suite of chemical- and isotopic discrimination strategies as well as multivariate statistical techniques. We find that the distribution of the terrigenous sources (i.e., Asian loess, South American ash, Papua New Guinea, and ocean island basalt) varies through time, latitude, and climate. Regardless of which method is used to determine accumulation rate, there also is no relationship between flux of any particular Fe source and climate. Moreover, there is no connection between a particular Fe source or pathway (eolian vs. Undercurrent) to total productivity during the Last Glacial Maximum, Pleistocene glacial episodes, and the Miocene "Biogenic Bloom". This would suggest an alternative process, such as an interoceanic reorganization of nutrient inventories, may be responsible for past changes in total export in the open ocean, rather than simply Fe supply from dust and/or Equatorial Undercurrent processes. Additionally, perhaps a change in Fe source or flux is related to a change in a particular component of the total productivity (e.g., the production of organic matter, calcium carbonate, or biogenic opal).

The accumulation of extraterrestrial 3He, a tracer for interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), in sediments from the Ontong Java Plateau (OJP; western equatorial Pacific Ocean) has been shown previously to exhibit a regular cyclicity during the late Pleistocene, with a period of ~100 ka. Those results have been interpreted to reflect periodic variability in the global accretion of IDPs that, in turn, has been linked to changes in the inclination of Earth's orbit with respect to the invariable plane of the solar system. Here we show that the accumulation in OJP sediments of authigenic 230Th, produced by radioactive decay of 234U in seawater, exhibits a 100-ka cyclicity similar in phase and amplitude to that evident in the 3He record. We interpret the similar patterns of 230Th and 3He accumulation to reflect a common origin within the ocean-climate system. Comparing spatial and temporal patterns of sediment accumulation against regional patterns of biological productivity and against the well-established pattern of CaCO3 dissolution in the deep Pacific Ocean leads to the further conclusion that a common 100-ka cycle in accumulation of biogenic, authigenic and extraterrestrial constituents in OJP sediments reflects the influence of climate-related changes in sediment focusing, rather than changes in the rate of production or supply of sedimentary constituents.

Inversion of isotopic composition in the SO4(2-)-H2S system is shown to be universal in Neoeuxine sediments and an explanation of its occurrence is proposed. Change in isotopic composition of sulfate sulfur in Black Sea waters over last 10-15 thousand years is reconstructed. Periods of alteration between aerobic and anaerobic situations are identified, the beginning of entry of Mediterranean waters into the basin is dated, presence of authigenic carbonates in sediments of the sea is established and amounts are determined. Methane generation from carbon dioxide is shown to have been replaced by its generation from acetate in the paleo-Black Sea period.

Over a broad region of the eastern Japan Sea, Neogene opaline diatomaceous sediments alter with depth to hard porcellanites and cherts composed of opal-CT and quartz. We examined the oxygen isotopic compositions of these diagenetic silica minerals at four widely spaced sites occupied during ODP Leg 127 in order to investigate the thermal history of the region. Formation temperatures computed from these isotopic data range from 22° to 68°C for opal-CT and from 44° to 92°C for diagenetic quartz, quite similar to temperature ranges estimated from the extrapolated modern gradients, 36°-43°C and 49°-64°C, respectively. At each site the isotopic temperature values cluster near the extrapolated ambient sediment temperatures. As a first approximation, the similarities suggest that the positions of the silica transformations in the basin are controlled by the present thermal regime. In detail, isotopic and ambient temperatures differ. If these differences are real, then they reflect variations in the thermal histories at these sites. At Sites 794 and 797 in the Yamato Basin, isotopic temperatures and gradients computed from these data are lower than or comparable to ambient temperatures and gradients. We suggest that the silica zones have roughly equilibrated with the modern gradients at these localities. At Site 795 in the Japan Basin, isotopic temperatures are also lower than ambient sediment temperatures at comparable depths, but the gradient computed from the isotopic temperatures is higher than the present measured gradient. For both scenarios to hold, the silica zones must have formed under initially high gradients during the early post-rift period at this locality. These zones were then rapidly buried and have yet to equilibrate with the modern lower gradient. At Site 796 on Okushiri Ridge, isotopic temperatures exceed present temperatures as expected for an area of recent uplift. The gradient computed from our isotopic data and the thickness of the opal-CT zone indicate a higher gradient than at present at this site, apparently reflecting higher heat fluxes during the early post-rift period or recent frictional heating from nearby reverse fault activity.

The huge ice shelves in West Antarctica -the Ross and Filchner/Ronne Ice Shelves- habe probably extended out on th continental shelf during the late Wisconsin (Stuiver et al., 1981). Previous discussions, which have focused on the Ross Sea, have suggested (1) that the ice extended across the whole continental shelf (Denton et al., 1975; Kellog et al., 1979, doi:10.1130/0091-7613(1979)7<249:LQEOTW>2.0.CO;2) or (2) that there was only a minor ecpansion (Drewry, 1979). Here we present sedimentological data from the Weddel Sea which suggests that a late Wisconsin grounded ice sheet extended to the shelfe edge. The evidence includes a recent thicker ice in Ellsworth Mountains at the head of the Filchner/Ronne Ice Shelf (Rutford et al., 1980). This thickening would lead to an expansion of the inland ice sheet over the continental shelf, filling up the Weddell Sea embayment.

New geochemical proxy data from Bermuda Rise piston cores reveal ocean and climate conditions in the northern Sargasso Sea during marine isotope stage 3. Using ?18O on the planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides ruber, we can correlate explicitly with every stadial/interstadial change in Greenland ice between ~32 and 58 ka. These data suggest repetitive changes of ~4°C in the annual average sea surface temperature (SST), with maximum cooling comparable to or greater than SST during glacial maximum conditions. The extent of SST depression is about the same for typical stadial events and for Heinrich events 4 and 5, which we have identified on the Bermuda Rise by traces of ice rafting. Benthic foraminiferal d13C decreases during every stadial event, consistent with reduced production of the deepest component of North Atlantic Deep Water and shoaling of its interface with Antarctic Bottom Water. This interpretation is supported by benthic Cd/Ca data from the climate cycle associated with interstadial 8.

Oxygen and carbon isotopic variability of the dominant (<38 µm) carbonate fraction within bedded, organic-carbon rich Lower Cretaceous sediment intervals from various DSDP sites are closely correlated with preservational changes in the carbonates. Isotopic fluctuations are absent where carbonate contents vary little and where the carbonate fraction is dominated by biogenic phytoplankton remains. Within each of the studied intervals oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios become increasingly more negative in samples with carbonate contents higher than about 60% in which the proportion of diagenetic microcarbonate increases rapidly. Carbon isotopic ratios show a trend towards positive values in samples with carbonate contents of less than 40% and strong signs of dissolution. The taxonomic composition of nannofossil assemblages varies little within single intervals, despite significant differential diagenesis among individual beds; this points towards ecological stability of oceanic surface waters during the deposition of alternating beds. Bedding is, however, closely related to changing bioturbation intensity, indicating repeated fluctuations of the deep-water renewal rates and oxygen supply. Various microbial decomposition processes of organic matter leading to bed-specific differential carbonate diagenesis resulted in an amplification of primary bedding features and are considered responsible for most of the observed fluctuations in the stable isotopic ratios and carbonate contents.

Comparison of calcareous dinoflagellate cyst assemblages with Ba, Al, Mn, and Fe records from three sediment cores collected in the eastern Mediterranean Sea indicate that calcareous dinoflagellate cysts are generally resistant to postdepositional dissolution. Cyst association changes during and after sapropel S1 formation can therefore be closely related to variability in surface water productivity. Two groups of cysts are defined: those having highest abundances within the sapropelic and postsapropelic sediments. The temporal cyst distributions suggest increased freshwater input mainly from the Nile and a shallowing of the pycnocline as the most important processes increasing nutrient concentration in the photic zone, thus leading to increased productivity and organic carbon fluxes during sapropel formation. Furthermore, a general warming trend at the beginning of S1 formation and a slight salinity decrease are reconstructed.
