The mechanical behavior of microfibrilar composites (MFC), consisting of a matrix of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and reinforcement of polyamide 6 (PA6) fibrils, with and without compatibilization, was studied. The composites were produced by conventional processing techniques with various shape and arrangement of the PA6 reinforcing entities: long, unidirectional, or crossed bundles of fibrils (UDP and CPC, respectively), middle-length, randomly oriented bristles (MRB), or non-oriented micrometric PA6 spheres (NOM). The tensile, flexural, and impact properties of the MFC materials (UDP, CPC, and MRB) were determined as a function of the PA6 reinforcement shape, alignment and content, and compared with those of NOM, the non-fibrous composite. It was concluded that the in-situ MFC materials based on HDPE/PA6 blends display improvements in the mechanical behavior when compared with the neat HDPE matrix, e.g., up to 33% for the Young modulus, up to 119% for the ultimate tensile strength, and up to 80% for the flexural stiffness. In this article, we report the preparation of conducting natural rubber (NR) with polyaniline (Pani). NR was made into a conductive material by the compounding of NR with Pani in powder form. NR latex was made into a conductive material by the in situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of NR latex. Different compositions of Pani- NR semi-interpenetrating networks were prepared, and the dielectric properties of all of the samples were determined in microwave frequencies. The cavity perturbation techpique was used for this study. A HP8510 vector network analyzer with a rectangular cavity resonator was used for this study. S bands 2-4 GHz in frequency were used. Thermal studies were also carried out with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.

Natural rubber/isora fibre composites were cured at various temperatures. The solvent swelling characteristics of natural rubber composites containing both untreated and alkali treated fibres were investigated in aromatic and aliphatic solvents like toluene, and n-hexane. The diffusion experiments were conducted by the sorption gravimetric method. The restrictions on elastomer swelling exerted by isora fibre as well as the anisotropy of swelling of the composite have been confirmed by this study. Composite cured at 100°C shows the lowest percentage swelling. The uptake of aromatic solvent is higher than that of aliphatic solvent for the composites cured at all temperatures. The effect of fibre loading on the swelling behaviour of the composite was also investigated in oils like petrol, diesel, lubricating oil etc. The % swelling index and swelling coefficient of the composite were found to decrease with increase in fibre loading. This is due to the increased hindrance exerted by the fibres at higher fibre loadings and also due to the good fibre-rubber interactions. Maximum uptake of solvent was observed with petrol followed by diesel and then lubricating oil. The presence of bonding agent in the composites restrict the swelling considerably due to the strong interfacial adhesion. At a fixed fibre loading, the alkali treated fibre composite showed lower percentage swelling compared to the untreated one.

Precipitated silica is the most promising alternative for carbon black in tyre tread compounds due to its improved performance in terms of rolling resistance and wet grip. But its poor processability is a serious limitation to its commercial application. This thesis suggests a novel route for the incorporation of silica in rubbers,i.e.,precipitation of silica in rubber latex followed by coagulation of the latex to get rubber-silica maseterbatch.Composites with in situ precipitated silica showed improved processability and mechanical properties, when compared to conventional silica composites.

The search for new materials especially those possessing special properties continues at a great pace because of ever growing demands of the modern life. The focus on the use of intrinsically conductive polymers in organic electronic devices has led to the development of a totally new class of smart materials. Polypyrrole (PPy) is one of the most stable known conducting polymers and also one of the easiest to synthesize. In addition, its high conductivity, good redox reversibility and excellent microwave absorbing characteristics have led to the existence of wide and diversified applications for PPy. However, as any conjugated conducting polymer, PPy lacks processability, flexibility and strength which are essential for industrial requirements. Among various approaches to making tractable materials based on PPy, incorporating PPy within an electrically insulating polymer appears to be a promising method, and this has triggered the development of blends or composites. Conductive elastomeric composites of polypyrrole are important in that they are composite materials suitable for devices where flexibility is an important parameter. Moreover these composites can be moulded into complex shapes. In this work an attempt has been made to prepare conducting elastomeric composites by the incorporation of PPy and PPy coated short Nylon-6 fiber with insulating elastomer matrices- natural rubber and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber. It is well established that mechanical properties of rubber composites can be greatly improved by adding short fibers. Generally short fiber reinforced rubber composites are popular in industrial fields because of their processing advantages, low cost, and their greatly improved technical properties such as strength, stiffness, modulus and damping. In the present work, PPy coated fiber is expected to improve the mechanical properties of the elastomer-PPy composites, at the same time increasing the conductivity. In addition to determination of DC conductivity and evaluation of mechanical properties, the work aims to study the thermal stability, dielectric properties and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of the composites. The thesis consists of ten chapters.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of resistance-curve behavior and fatigue crack growth in cementitious matrices reinforced with eco-friendly natural fibers obtained from agricultural by-products. The composites include: blast furnace slag cement reinforced with pulped fibers of sisal, banana and bleached eucalyptus pulp, and ordinary Portland cement composites reinforced with bleached eucalyptus pulp. Fracture resistance (R-curve) and fatigue crack growth behavior were studied using single-edge notched bend specimens. The observed stable crack growth behavior was then related to crack/microstructure interactions that were elucidated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Fracture mechanics models were used to quantify the observed crack-tip shielding due to crack-bridging. The implications of the results are also discussed for the design of natural fiber-reinforced composite materials for affordable housing. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of carbon fiber surface characteristics on flexural properties of structural composites is studied in this work. Two types of intermediate modulus carbon fibers were used: T800HB and IM7. Results revealed that higher mechanical properties are linked with higher interfacial adhesion. Morphologies and chemical compositions of commercial carbon fibers (CF) were characterized by Fourier Transformed Infra Red (FTIR) and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM). Comparing the results, the T800HB apparently has more roughness, since the IM7 seems to be recovered for a polymeric film. On other hand, the IM7 one shows higher interactivity with epoxy resin system Cycom 890 RTM. Composites produced with Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) were tested on a flexural trial. Interfacial adhesion difference was showed with SEM and Dynamic Mechanical Analyses (DMA), justifying the higher flexural behavior of composites made with IM7 fibers. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. This article reviews recent literature on hierarchical thermoplastic-based composites that simultaneously incorporate carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and conventional microscale fibers, and discusses the structure?property relationships of the resulting hybrids. The mixing of multiple and multiscale constituents enables the preparation of materials with new or improved properties due to synergistic effects. By exploiting the outstanding mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of CNTs, a new generation of multifunctional high-performance composites suitable for a wide variety of applications can be developed.

The electrical resistivity of carbon fiber reinforced cement composites (CFRCCs) has been widely studied, because of their utility as multifunctional materials. The percolation phenomenon has also been reported and modeled when the electrical behavior of those materials had to be characterized. Amongst the multiple applications of multifunctional cement composites the ability of a CFRCC to act as a strain sensor is attractive. This paper provides experimental data relating self-sensing function and percolation threshold, and studying the effect of fiber aspect ratio on both phenomena. Higher fiber slenderness permitted percolation at lower carbon fiber addition, affected mechanical properties and improved strain-sensing sensitivity of CFRCC, which was also improved if percolation had not been achieved.

Natural fibers can be used in rotational molding process to obtain parts with improved mechanical properties. Different approaches have been followed in order to produce formulations containing banana or abaca fiber at 5% weight, in two- and three-layer constructions. Chemically treated abaca fiber has also been studied, causing some problems in processability. Fibers used have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), optical microscopy, and single-fiber mechanical tests. Rotomolded parts have been tested for tensile, flexural, and impact properties, demonstrating that important increases in elastic modulus are achieved with these fibers, although impact properties are reduced. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Fibre-reinforced mouldings are of growing interest to the rotational moulding industry due to their outstanding price performance ratio. However, a particular problem that arises when using reinforcements in this process is that the process is low shear and good mixing of resin and reinforcement is not optimum under those conditions. There is also a problem of the larger/heavier reinforcing agents segregating out of the powder to lay up on the inner part surface. In this paper we report on studies to incorporate, short glass fibres into rotationally moulded parts. Four different approaches were investigated; direct addition of fibre in between two powder shots, addition of a layer of pre-compounded polyethylene-glass fibre pellets between two powder shots, addition of a layer of pre-compounded polyethylene-glass fibre powder between two powder shots and a single layer of glass-reinforced, pre-compounded powder. Results indicate that pre-compounding is necessary to gain performance enhancement and the single layer part made from glass-reinforced, pre-compounded powder exhibited the highest tensile and flexural modulus.
