Self-ordering of quasi-quantum wires in multilayer InAlAs/AlGaAs nanostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy is identified. The chain-like structures along the [1 (1) over bar 0] Of direction formed by coalescence of quantum dots were observed. The photoluminescence of the nanostructures is partially polarized along the [1 (1) over bar 0] direction. The polarization ratio depends on the wavelength and the maximum polarization is on the lower energy side. The maximum polarization increases from 0.32 at 10 K to 0.53 at 100 K, and the energy position of maximum polarization moves near to PL peak with increasing temperature. They are all related to the existence of isolated islands and quasi-quantum wires in our sample. This result provides a novel approach to produce narrow quantum wires. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. A quasi-thermodynamic analysis of the MOVPE growth of AlxGa1-xN alloy using TMGa, TMA1 and ammonia has been proposed. The effect of varying growth conditions (growth temperature, reactor pressure, input V/III ratio, hydrogen pressure fraction in the carrier gas and the decomposed fraction of ammonia) on the distribution coefficient of Al has been calculated. In the case of AlxGa1-xN, preferential incorporation of Al is predicted. The calculated relationship between input vapour and deposited solid composition has been compared with data in the literature. A good agreement between the calculated and the experimental composition shows that our improved model is suitable for applying to the AlxGa1-xN alloy grown by MOVPE. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. An InP-based one-dimensional photonic crystal quantum cascade laser is realized. With photo lithography instead of electron beam lithography and using inductively coupled plasma etching, four-period air-semiconductor couples are defined as Bragg reflectors at one end of the resonator. The spectral measurement at 80K shows the quasi-continuous-wave operation with the wavelength of 5.36μm for a 22μm-wide and 2mm-long epilayer-up bonded device.

The molecular chain and lamellar crystal orientation in ultrathin films (thickness < 100 nm) of poly(di-n-hexylsilane) (PDHS) on silicon wafer substrates have been investigated by using transmission electronic microscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and UV absorption spectroscopy. PDHS showed a film thickness-dependent molecular chain and lamellar crystal orientation. Lamellar crystals grew preferentially in flat-on orientation in the monolayer ultrathin films of PDHS, i.e., the silicon backbones were oriented along the surface-normal direction. By contrast, the orientation of lamellar crystals was preferentially edge-on in ultrathin films thicker than ca. 13 nm, i.e., the silicon backbones were oriented parallel to the substrate surface. We interpret the different orientations of molecular chain and lamellar crystal as due to the reduction of the entropy of the polymer chain near the substrate surface and the particularity of the crystallographic (001) plane of flat-on lamellae, respectively. A remarkable influence of the orientations of the silicon backbone on the UV absorption of these PDHS ultrathin films was observed due to the one-dimensional nature of sigma-electrons delocalized along the silicon backbone.

The branched crystal morphology of linear polyethylene formed at various temperatures from thin films has been studied by atomic-force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED) pattern and polymer decoration technique. Two types of branched patterns, i.e. dendrite and seaweed patterns, have been visualized. The fractal dimension d(f) = 1.65 of both dendrite and some of seaweed patterns was obtained by using the box-counting method, although most of the seaweed patterns are compact. Selected-area ED patterns indicate that the fold stems tilt about 34.5degrees around the b-axis and polymer decoration patterns show that the chain folding direction and regularity in two (200). regions are quite different from each other. Because of chain tilting, branched crystals show three striking features: 1) the lamella-like branches show two (200) regions with different thickness; 2) the crystals usually bend towards the thin region; 3) the thick region grows faster by developing branches, thus branches usually occur outside the thick region. The branched patterns show a characteristic width w, which gives a linear relationship with the crystallization temperature on a semilogarithmic plot.

The effects of a constant uniform magnetic field on a growing equiaxed crystal are investigated using a 3-dimensional enthalpy based numerical model. Two cases are considered: The first case looks at unconstrained growth, where the current density is generated through the thermo-electric effect and the current circulates between the tips and roots of the dendrite, the second represents an imposed potential difference across the domain. A jump in the electrical conductivity between the liquid and solid causes the current density to be non uniform. In both cases the resulting Lorentz force drives fluid flow in the liquid phase, this in turn causes advection of the thermal and solute field altering the free energy close to the interface and changing the morphology of the dendrite. In the first case the flow field is complex comprising of many circulations, the morphological changes are modelled using a 2D model with a quasi 3D approximation. The second case is comparable to classic problems involving a constant velocity boundary.

Numerical simulations are used to study the electromagnetic scattering from phase agile microstrip reflectarray cells which exploit the voltage controlled dielectric anisotropy property of nematic state liquid crystals (LC). In the computer model two arrays of equal size elements constructed on a 15?m thick tuneable LC layer were designed to operate at centre frequencies of 102 GHz and 130 GHz. Micromachining processes based on the metallization of quartz/silicon wafers and an industry compatible LCD packaging technique were employed to fabricate the grounded periodic structures. The loss and phase of the reflected signals were measured using a quasi-optical test bench with the reflectarray cells inserted at the beam waist of the imaged Gaussian beam, thus eliminating some of the major problems associated with traditional free-space characterisation at these frequencies. By applying a low frequency AC bias voltage of 10 V, a 165o phase shift with a loss 4.5 dB-6.4 dB at 102 GHz and 130o phase shift with a loss variation between 4.3 dB – 7 dB at 130 GHz was obtained. The experimental results are shown to be in close agreement with the computer model.

Purple bronze Li0.9Mo6O17 has attracted researchers for its low dimensionality and corresponding properties. Although it has been studied for nearly two decades, there are still some unsolved puzzles with this unique material. Single crystals of Li0.9Mo6O17 were grown using the temperature gradient flux technique in this research. The crystal growth was optimized by experimenting different conditions and good quality crystals were obtained. X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the right phase of the crystals. Resistivity measurements and magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out, and anomalous electronic behaviors were found. All of the samples showed the metal-insulator transition near 20K, followed by behavior that differs from sample to sample: either superconducting, metallic or insulating behavior was observed below 2K. Li0.9Mo6O17 was considered as a quasi-one-dimensional crystal and also a superconducting crystal, which implies a dimensional crossover may occur at the metal-insulator transition. A two-band scenario of the Luttinger liquid model was used to fit the resistivity data and excellent results were achieved, suggesting that the Luttinger theory is a very good candidate for the explanation of the anomalous behavior of Li0.9Mo6O17. In addition, the susceptibility measurements showed Curie paramagnetism and some temperature independent paramagnetism at low temperature. The absence of any anomalous magnetic feature near 20K where the resistivity upturn takes place, suggests that a charge density wave mechanism, which has been proposed by some researchers, is not responsible for the unique properties of Li0.9Mo6O17.

A family of ruthenium (III) complexes of tetradentate monobasic NSNO donor chelators (HL) have been synthesized and isolated in their pure form. On chromatographic separation, trans-dichloro and cis-dichloro ruthenium (111) complexes of pyridylthioazophenolates are eluted using 19:1 and 7:3 (v/v) DCM-MeOH mixtures, respectively. Both cis and trans isomers of the dark brown colored ruthenium (111) complexes, having the general formula of [Ru(L)Cl-2], have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectroscopic and other physico-chemical tools. The magnetic moments of both the cis- and trans-[Ru(L)Cl-2] complexes are in the range of 1.71-1.79 BM. One of the complexes, trans-[Ru(L1)Cl-2] (2a), has been subjected to single-crystal X-ray analysis which confirms that the chlorines are in mutually trans positions in the molecule. The EPR spectra of the cis-[Ru(L)Cl-2] complexes (1) in DMF are consistent with the fact that the complexes are low-spin octahedral with one unpaired electron having three different g values (g(x) not equal g(y) not equal g(z)) complexes are monomeric with an octahedral coordination sphere. The electrochemical studies of [Ru(L)Cl,] in DMF show a quasi-reversible voltammogram. The reduction potentials for the cis-isomers are comparatively lower than those of the corresponding trans isomers. On reaction with the bidentate bipyridyl ligand in the presence of AgNO3, the cis-[Ru(L)Cl-2] complexes (1) produce a series of complexes with the general formula [Ru(L)(bpy)(2)](PF6)(2) (3). which have also been characterized by elemental analyses, spectroscopic and other physico-chemical tools. Three new mononuclear complexes of nitrogen-sulfur donor sets, formulated as (Fe-II(L)Cl-2] (1), [Co-II(L)Cl-2] (2) and [Ni-II(L)Cl-2] (3) where L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane, were synthesized and isolated in their pure form. All the complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The solid state structures of complexes I and 3 have been established by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structural analysis evidences isomorphous crystals with the metal ion in a distorted octahedral geometry that comprises NSSN ligand donors with trans located pyridine rings and chlorides in cis positions. In dimethylformamide solution, the complexes were found to exhibit Fe-II/Fe-III, co(II)/co(III) and Ni-II/Ni-III quasi-reversible redox couples in cyclic voltammograms with E-1/2 values (versus Ag/AgCl at 298 K) of +0.295, +0.795 and +0.745 V for 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Phenylphosphinic acid (HPhPO2H) is oxidized to phenylphosphonic acid (PhPO3H2) at room temperature using a solution of [Cu2(μ-O2CCH3)4(H2O)2] in pyridine. The phenylphosphonic acid was recovered as the monomeric copper(II) complex [Cu(PhPO3H)2(C5H5N)4]·H2O (1a), and the reaction thought to proceed via a copper(I) intermediate. Recrystallization of 1a from methanol gave [Cu(PhPO3H)2(C5H5N)4]·2CH3OH (1b). The unsolvated complex [Cu(PhPO3H)2(C5H5N)4] (1c) was prepared by refluxing polymeric [Cu(PhPO3)(H2O)] (2) in pyridine. The X-ray crystal structures of 1b and 1c show that in each of these monomeric complexes the copper(II) ion is ligated by four equatorial pyridine molecules and two axial monoanionic phenylphosphonate groups. A cyclic voltammetric study of 1a revealed a quasi-reversible Cu2+/Cu+ couple with E1/2 = +228 mV (vs Ag/AgCl).

The reaction of cis-[RuCl2(dmso)(4)] with [6-(2-pyridinyl)-5,6-dihydrobenzimidazo[1,2-c] quinazoline] (L) afforded in pure form a blue ruthenium(II) complex, [Ru(L-1)(2)] (1), where the original L changed to [2-(1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)-phenyl]-pyridin-2-ylmethylene-amine (HL1). Treatment of RuCl3 center dot 3H(2)O with L in dry tetrahydrofuran in inert atmosphere led to a green ruthenium(II) complex, trans-[RuCl2(L-2)(2)] (2), where L was oxidized in situ to the neutral species 6-pyridin-yl-benzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-c] quinazoline (L-2). Complex 2 was also obtained from the reaction of RuCl3 center dot 3H(2)O with L-2 in dry ethanol. Complexes 1 and 2 have been characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic tools, and 1 has been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The electrochemical behavior of the complexes shows the Ru(III)/Ru(II) couple at different potentials with quasi-reversible voltammograms. The interaction of these complexes with calf thymus DNA by using absorption and emission spectral studies allowed determination of the binding constant K-b and the linear Stern-Volmer quenching constant K-SV

The title radical (F4BlmNN) is a stable nitronylnitroxide that forms hydrogen-bonded NH center dot center dot center dot ON chains in the solid state. The chains assemble the F4BlmNN molecules to form stacked contacts between the radical groups, in a geometry that is expected to exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) exchange based on spin polarization (SP) models. The experimental magnetic susceptibility of F4BlmNN confirms the expectation, showing 1-D Heisenberg chain FM exchange behavior over 1.8-300 K with an intrachain exchange constant Of J(chain)/k = +22 K. At lower temperatures, ac magnetic susceptibility and variable field heat capacity measurements show that F4BlmNN acts as a quasi-1-D ferromagnet. The dominant ferromagnetic exchange interaction is attributable to overlap between spin orbitals of molecules within the hydrogen-bonded chains, consistent with the SP model expectations. The chains appear to be antiferromagnetically exchange coupled, giving cusps in the ac susceptibility and zero field heat capacity at lower temperatures. The results indicate that the sample orders magnetically at about 0.7 K. The magnetic heat capacity ordering cusp shifts to lower temperatures as external magnetic field increases, consistent with forming a bulk antiferromagnetic phase below a Neel temperature of T-N(0) = 0.72 K, with a critical field of H-c approximate to 1800 Oe. The interchain exchange is estimated to be zJ/k congruent to (-)0.1 K.

The physical properties and the excitations spectrum in oxides and semiconductors materials are presented in this work, whose the first part presents a study on the confinement of optical phonons in artificial systems based on III-V nitrides, grown in periodic and quasiperiodic forms. The second part of this work describes the Ab initio calculations which were carried out to obtain the optoeletronic properties of Calcium Oxide (CaO) and Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) crystals. For periodic and quasi-periodic superlattices, we present some dynamical properties related to confined optical phonons (bulk and surface), obtained through simple theories, such as the dielectric continuous model, and using techniques such as the transfer-matrix method. The localization character of confined optical phonon modes, the magnitude of the bands in the spectrum and the power laws of these structures are presented as functions of the generation number of sequence. The ab initio calculations have been carried out using the CASTEP software (Cambridge Total Sequential Energy Package), and they were based on ultrasoft-like pseudopotentials and Density Functional Theory (DFT). Two di®erent geometry optimizations have been e®ectuated for CaO crystals and CaCO3 polymorphs, according to LDA (local density approximation) and GGA (generalized gradient approximation) approaches, determining several properties, e. g. lattice parameters, bond length, electrons density, energy band structures, electrons density of states, e®ective masses and optical properties, such as dielectric constant, absorption, re°ectivity, conductivity and refractive index. Those results were employed to investigate the confinement of excitons in spherical Si@CaCO3 and CaCO3@SiO2 quantum dots and in calcium carbonate nanoparticles, and were also employed in investigations of the photoluminescence spectra of CaCO3 crystal

A correlation between lattice parameters, oxygen composition, and the thermoelectric and Hall coefficients is presented for single-crystal Li0.9Mo6O17, a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) metallic compound. The possibility that this compound is a compensated metal is discussed in light of a substantial variability observed in the literature for these transport coefficients.
