The term Congenital Nystagmus (Early Onset Nystagmus or Infantile Nystagmus Syndrome) refers to a pathology characterised by an involuntary movement of the eyes, which often seriously reduces a subject’s vision. Congenital Nystagmus (CN) is a specific kind of nystagmus within the wider classification of infantile nystagmus, which can be best recognized and classified by means of a combination of clinical investigations and motility analysis; in some cases, eye movement recording and analysis are indispensable for diagnosis. However, interpretation of eye movement recordings still lacks of complete reliability; hence new analysis techniques and precise identification of concise parameters directly related to visual acuity are necessary to further support physicians’ decisions. To this aim, an index computed from eye movement recordings and related to the visual acuity of a subject is proposed in this thesis. This estimator is based on two parameters: the time spent by a subject effectively viewing a target (foveation time - Tf) and the standard deviation of eye position (SDp). Moreover, since previous studies have shown that visual acuity largely depends on SDp, a data collection pilot study was also conducted with the purpose of specifically identifying eventual slow rhythmic component in the eye position and to characterise in more detail the SDp. The results are presented in this thesis. In addition, some oculomotor system models are reviewed and a new approach to those models, i.e. the recovery of periodic orbits of the oculomotor system in patients with CN, is tested on real patients data. In conclusion, the results obtained within this research consent to completely and reliably characterise the slow rhythmic component sometimes present in eye position recordings of CN subjects and to better classify the different kinds of CN waveforms. Those findings can successfully support the clinicians in therapy planning and treatment outcome evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Intradialytic exercise has been described to improve blood pressure stability and dialysis efficacy. However, comorbid conditions in the dialysis population often preclude the widespread use of active intradialytic exercise. Therefore, we investigated the effect of intradialytic transcutaneous muscle stimulation (TEMS) and passive cycling movements (PCMs) on blood pressure and dialysis efficacy in patients. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, controlled, randomized, crossover investigation. SETTING ; PARTICIPANTS: Ten patients were randomly allocated to TEMS, PCMs, or no intervention (NI) for 9 consecutive dialysis sessions. INTERVENTION: Participants were studied with NI, PCMs using a motor-driven ergometer, and bilateral TEMS of the leg musculature. Individual dialysis prescriptions were unchanged during the investigation. OUTCOMES ; MEASUREMENTS: The effect of TEMS and PCMs on blood pressure and dialysis efficacy in patients was assessed. RESULTS: Mean blood pressure increased from 121/64 +/- 21/15 mm Hg with NI to 132/69 +/- 21/15 mm Hg (P < 0.001) during sessions with PCMs and 125/66 +/- 22/16 mm Hg (P < 0.05) during sessions with TEMS. Urea and phosphate removal during dialysis were significantly (P < 0.001) greater with TEMS (19.4 +/- 3.7 g/dialysis and 1,197 +/- 265 mg/dialysis) or PCMs (20.1 +/- 3.4 g/dialysis and 1,172 +/- 315 mg/dialysis) than with NI (15.1 +/- 3.9 g/dialysis and 895 +/- 202 mg/dialysis). Body weight, ultrafiltration, Kt/V, and increases in hemoglobin and albumin levels during dialysis did not differ among the NI, PCMs, and TEMS groups. LIMITATIONS: The study design does not allow extension of the findings to prolonged treatment. CONCLUSION: Future studies during longer observation periods will have to prove the persistence of these acute findings. Both TEMS and PCMs deserve future investigations in dialysis patients because they increase intradialytic blood pressure and facilitate urea and phosphate removal when applied short term.

Thirty-eight samples from DSDP Sites 549 to 551 were analyzed for major and minor components and trace element abundances. Multivariate statistical analysis of geochemical data groups the samples into two major classes: an organic-carbon- rich group (> 1% TOC) containing high levels of marine organic matter and certain trace elements (Cu, Zn, V, Ni, Co, Ba, and Cr) and an organic-carbon-lean group depleted in these components. The greatest organic and trace metal enrichments occur in the uppermost Albian to Turanian sections of Sites 549 to 551. Carbon-isotopic values of bulk carbonate for the middle Cenomanian section of Site 550 (2.35 to 2.70 per mil) and the upper Cenomanian-Turonian sections of Sites 549 (3.35 to 4.47 per mil) and 551 (3.13 to 3.72 per mil) are similar to coeval values reported elsewhere in the region. The relatively heavy d13C values from Sites 549 and 551 indicate that this interval was deposited during the global "oceanic anoxic event" that occurred at the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary. Variation in the d18O of bulk carbonate for Section 550B-18-1 of middle Cenomanian age suggests that paleosalinity and/or paleotemperature variations may have occurred concurrently with periodic anoxia at this site. Climatically controlled increases in surface-water runoff may have caused surface waters to periodically freshen, resulting in stable salinity stratification

We measured carbonate concentrations in Pleistocene and Pliocene sediments deposited at Sites 709, 710, and 711. Carbonate concentrations exhibit low-amplitude, long-wave length (300-400 k.y. period) variations at the shallowest sites (709 and 710). Before 2.47 Ma, all three sites exhibit higher frequency (100 k.y. period) variations. The deepest site (711) exhibited low-amplitude variations and very low concentrations up to the Gauss/Matuyama magnetic reversal (2.47 Ma), then concentrations abruptly increased. After 2.47 Ma, carbonate concentrations at Site 711 exhibited the same periodic changes as at Site 709. Although a long wave-length periodicity (260-280 k.y.) occurs at these sites after 2.47 Ma, the 100 k.y. period is absent. The dominant periods observed in these data are those found in the eccentricity component of the earth's orbital geometry. Estimates of carbonate accumulation at Sites 709 and 710 document that surface-water productivity decreased near the Gauss/Matuyama magnetic reversal whereas accumulation at Site 711 increased. These results indicate that the rate of carbonate preservation in the deep Indian Ocean increased at that time. This increase in preservation may have re- sulted from a decrease in the production rate of carbonate in tropical oceans of the world. Carbonate accumulation esti- mated from sediments in shallow locations (~3000-3800 m) of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans also indicates that carbonate production decreased at this time. A consequence of lowered surface-water productivity is increased carbonate ion concentration of the deep ocean and better preservation of carbonate on the seafloor.

This petrological study of the lower Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE1a) focused on the nature of the organic-rich interval as well as the tuffaceous units above and below it. The volcaniclastic debris deposited just prior to the OAE1a is consistent with reactivation of volcanic centers across the Shatsky Rise, concurrent with volcanism on the Ontong Java Plateau. This reactivation may have been responsible for the sub-OAE1a unconformity. Soon after this volcanic pulse, anomalous amounts of organic matter accumulated on the rise, forming a black shale horizon. The complex textures in the organic-rich intervals suggest a history of periodic anoxia, overprinted by bioturbation. Components include pellets, radiolarians, and fish debris. The presence of carbonate-cemented radiolarite under the OAE1a intervals suggests that there has been large-scale remobilization of carbonate in the system, which in turn may explain the absence of calcareous microfossils in the section. The volcanic debris in the overlying tuffaceous interval differs in that it is significantly epiclastic and glauconitic. It was likely derived from an emergent volcanic edifice.

We report 48 analyses of rare-earth elements (REE) and 15 143Nd/144Nd and 87Sr/86Sr analyses for basalts from the eight holes drilled during Leg 82. Discrete and distinct REE patterns and 143Nd/144Nd ratios characterize the eight holes, with little variation observed downhole except in Holes 561 and 558, thus suggesting dominantly long-term temporal and large-scale spatial variations in the mantle source of these basalts beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge over the last 35 Ma of its spreading activity. There is a good inverse correlation between 143Nd/144Nd and (La/Sm)EF with one exception in Hole 558 (approximately 35 Ma), the latter suggesting a recent (35 Ma) light REE depletion event, perhaps caused by dynamic or fractional melting. Short-term temporal and small-scale spatial mantle source variability is also evident in Hole 561 (approximately 18 Ma), which has rapid fluctuations in REE patterns and 143Nd/144Nd ratios (suggesting rapid transfer of magma from the time of melting) and is evidence contrary to the presence of a well-mixed magma chamber at this particular site and time. The mantle source variations noted can be interpreted within two extreme models. The first model invokes a convecting mantle depleted in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and containing lumps (or veins) of LILE-enriched material of various shapes and sizes, passively and randomly distributed throughout. A second more restrictive model considers the interaction of fixed mantle plumes and the LILE-depleted asthenosphere flowing towards a migrating Mid- Atlantic Ridge (MAR) axis. With the exception of Hole 558 and the uncertainties of reconstructions of absolute plate movements in the region, the observed variations can be explained by two hot spots; the nearly ridge-centered Azores hot spot (plume) and another hot spot located beneath the African plate that may be affecting the source of basalts currently erupting at the MAR axis at 35°N and which, in the past, would have produced the New England chain of seamounts on the North American plate and (later) the Atlantis-Great Meteor chain on the African plate. Basalts erupted south of the Hayes Fracture Zone have not been affected by either of these two hot spots over the last 35 Ma and appear to have been continuously derived from the LILE-depleted source. Subaxial flow downridge from the Azores plume appears to have started 9 Ma, on the basis of the southward converging V-shaped time-transgressive ridges branching from the Pico and Corves Island, or not earlier than 16 Ma, on the basis of the geochemical results. Variations within Hole 558 remains unexplained by the latter model, unless we hypothesize a third hot spot.

A walking machine is a wheeled rover alternative, well suited for work in an unstructured environment and specially in abrupt terrain. They have some drawback like speed and power consumption, but they can achieve complex movements and protrude very little the environment they are working on. The locomotion system is determined by the terrain conditions and, in our case, this legged design has been chosen based in a working area like Rio Tinto in the South of Spain, which is a river area with abrupt terrain. A walking robot with so many degrees of freedom can be a challenge when dealing with the analysis and simulations of the legs. This paper shows how to deal with the kinematical analysis of the equations of a hexapod robot based on a design developed by the Center of Astrobiology INTA-CSIC following the classical formulation of equations

Because the interactions between feedforward influences are inextricably linked during many motor outputs (including but not limited to walking), the contribution of descending inputs to the generation of movements is difficult to study. Here we take advantage of the relatively small number of descending neurons (DNs) in the Drosophila melanogaster model system. We first characterize the number and distribution of the DN populations, then present a novel load free preparation, which enables the study of descending control on limb movements in a context where sensory feedback can be is reduced while leaving the nervous system, musculature, and cuticle of the animal relatively intact. Lastly we use in-vivo whole cell patch clamp electrophysiology to characterize the role of individual DNs in response to specific sensory stimuli and in relationship to movement. We find that there are approximately 1100 DNs in Drosophila that are distributed across six clusters. Input from these DNs is not necessary for coordinated motor activity, which can be generated by the thoracic ganglion, but is necessary for the specific combinations of joint movements typically observed in walking. Lastly, we identify a particular cluster of DNs that are tuned to sensory stimuli and innervate the leg neuromeres. We propose that a multi-layered interaction between these DNs, other DNs, and motor circuits in the thoracic ganglia enable the diverse but well-coordinated range of motor outputs an animal might exhibit.

The area west of the Antarctic Peninsula is a key region for studying and understanding the history of glaciation in the southern high latitudes during the Neogene with respect to variations of the western Antarctic continental ice sheet, variable sea-ice cover, induced eustatic sea level change, as well as consequences for the global climatic system (Barker, Camerlenghi, Acton, et al., 1999). Sites 1095, 1096, and 1101 were drilled on sediment drifts forming the continental rise to examine the nature and composition of sediments deposited under the influence of the Antarctic Peninsula ice sheet, which has repeatedly advanced to the shelf edge and subsequently released glacially eroded material on the continental shelf and slope (Barker et al., 1999). Mass gravity processes on the slope are responsible for downslope sediment transport by turbidity currents within a channel system between the drifts. Furthermore, bottom currents redistribute the sediments, which leads to final build up of drift bodies (Rebesco et al., 1998). The high-resolution sedimentary sequences on the continental rise can be used to document the variability of continental glaciation and, therefore, allow us to assess the main factors that control the sediment transport and the depositional processes during glaciation periods and their relationship to glacio-eustatic sea level changes. Site 1095 lies in 3840 m of water in a distal position on the northwestern lower flank of Drift 7, whereas Site 1096 lies in 3152 m of water in a more proximal position within Drift 7. Site 1101 is located at 3509 m water depth on the northwestern flank of Drift 4. All three sites have high sedimentation rates. The oldest sediments were recovered at Site 1095 (late Miocene; 9.7 Ma), whereas sediments of Pliocene age were recovered at Site 1096 (4.7 Ma) and at Site 1101 (3.5 Ma). The purpose of this work is to provide a data set of bulk sediment parameters such as CaCO3, total organic carbon (TOC), and coarse-fraction mass percentage (>63 µm) measured on the sediments collected from the continental rise of the western Antarctic Peninsula (Holes 1095A, 1095B, 1096A, 1096B, 1096C, and 1101A). This information can be used to understand the complex depositional processes and their implication for variations in the climatic system of the western Pacific Antarctic margin since 9.7 Ma (late Miocene). Coarse-fraction particles (125-500 µm) from the late Pliocene and Pleistocene (4.0 Ma to recent) sediments recovered from Hole 1095A were microscopically analyzed to gather more detailed information about their variability and composition through time. These data can yield information about changes in potential source regions of the glacially eroded material that has been transported during repeated periods of ice-sheet movements on the shelf.

There is a mismatch between the kinds of movements used in gesture interfaces and our existing theoretical understandings of gesture. We need to re-examine the assumptions of gesture research and develop theory more suited to gesture interface design. In addition to improved theory, we need to develop ways for participants in the process of design to adapt, extend and develop theory for their own design contexts. Gesture interface designers should approach theory as a contingent resource for design actions that is responsive to the needs of the design process.

Traditionally, the aquisition of skills and sport movement has been characterised by numerous repetitions of presumed model movement pattern to be acquired by learners. This approach has been questioned by research identifying the presence of individualised movement patterns and the low probability of occurrence of two identical movements within and between individuals. In contrast, the differential learning approach claims advantage for incurring variability in the learning process by adding stochastic perturbations during practice. These ideas are exemplified by data from a high jump experiment which compared the effectiveness of classical and a differential training approach with pre-post test design. Results showed clear advantages for the group with additional stochastic perturbation during the aquisition phase in comparison to classically trained athletes. Analogies to similar phenomenological effects in the neurobiological literature are discussed.
