For the optimal design of plate heat exchangers (PHEs), an accurate thermal-hydraulic model that takes into account the effect of the flow arrangement on the heat load and pressure drop is necessary. In the present study, the effect of the flow arrangement on the pressure drop of a PHE is investigated. Thirty two different arrangements were experimentally tested using a laboratory scale PHE with flat plates. The experimental data was used for (a) determination of an empirical correlation for the effect of the number of passes and number of flow channels per pass on the pressure drop; (b) validation of a friction factor model through parameter estimation; and (c) comparison with the simulation results obtained with a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) model of the PHE. All three approaches resulted in a good agreement between experimental and predicted values of pressure drop. Moreover, the CFD model is used for evaluating the flow maldistribution in a PHE with two channels Per Pass. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An increasing number of studies shows that the glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) can survive and may indeed proliferate under the alternating anaerobic/aerobic conditions found in EBPR systems, thus forming a strong competitor of the polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs). Understanding their behaviors in a mixed PAO and GAO culture under various operational conditions is essential for developing operating strategies that disadvantage the growth of this group of unwanted organisms. A model-based data analysis method is developed in this paper for the study of the anaerobic PAO and GAO activities in a mixed PAO and GAO culture. The method primarily makes use of the hydrogen ion production rate and the carbon dioxide transfer rate resulting from the acetate uptake processes by PAOs and GAOs, measured with a recently developed titration and off-gas analysis (TOGA) sensor. The method is demonstrated using the data from a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) operated under alternating anaerobic and aerobic conditions. The data analysis using the proposed method strongly indicates a coexistence of PAOs and GAOs in the system, which was independently confirmed by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) measurement. The model-based analysis also allowed the identification of the respective acetate uptake rates by PAOs and GAOs, along with a number of kinetic and stoichiometric parameters involved in the PAO and GAO models. The excellent fit between the model predictions and the experimental data not involved in parameter identification shows that the parameter values found are reliable and accurate. It also demonstrates that the current anaerobic PAO and GAO models are able to accurately characterize the PAO/GAO mixed culture obtained in this study. This is of major importance as no pure culture of either PAOs or GAOs has been reported to date, and hence the current PAO and GAO models were developed for the interpretation of experimental results of mixed cultures. The proposed method is readily applicable for detailed investigations of the competition between PAOs and GAOs in enriched cultures. However, the fermentation of organic substrates carried out by ordinary heterotrophs needs to be accounted for when the method is applied to the study of PAO and GAO competition in full-scale sludges. Neste trabalho serão apresentados e discutidos vários aspectos relacionados com células de combustível, com particular enfoque na modelação de células de combustível de membrana de permuta protónica. Este trabalho está dividido em vários capítulos. No Capítunlo 1 são apresentadas as motivações e os objectivos da tese. No Capítulo 2 serão apresentadas as células de combustível em geral, a sua origem, os diversos tipos, o que as diferencia das restantes tecnologias de geração de energia e as suas vantagens e desvantagens. No Capítulo 3 discute-se a modelação de células de combustível. Serão expostos e explicados os diferentes tipos de modelos, seguindo-se uma apresentação do modelo selecionado para estudo, com referência aos fundamentos teóricos exposição detalhada da fórmulação matemática e os parâmetros que caracterizam o modelo. É também apresentado a implementação do modelo em Matlab/Simulink. No Capítulo 4 será discutida e apresentada a abordagem utilizada para a identificação dos parâmetros do modelo da célula de combustível. Propõe-se e prova-se que uma abordagem baseada num algoritmo de optimização inteligente proporciona um método eficaz e preciso para a identificação dos parâmetros. Esta abordagem requer a existência de alguns dados experimentais que são também apresentados. O algoritmo utilizado designa-se por Optimização por Enxame de Partículas – Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). São apresentados os seus fundamentos, características, implementação em Matlab/Simulink e a estratégia de optimização, isto é, a configuração do algoritmo, a definição da função objectivo e limites de variação dos parâmetros. São apresentados os resultados do processo de optimização, resultados adicionais de validação do modelo, uma análise de robustez do conjunto óptimo de parâmetros e uma análise de sensibilidade dos mesmos. O trabalho termina apresentando, no último capítulo, algumas conclusões, das quais se destacam: - O bom desempenho do algoritmo PSO para a identificação dos parâmetros do modelo da célula de combsutível; - Uma robustez interessante do algoritmo PSO, no sentido em que, para várias execuções do método resultam valores do parâmetros e da função objectivo com variabilidade bastante reduzidas; - Um bom modelo da célula de combustível, que quando caracterizado pelo conjunto óptimo de parâmetros, apresenta, sistematicamente, erros relativos médios inferiores a 2,5% para um conjunto alargado de condições de funcionamento.

The Maxwell equations play a fundamental role in the electromagnetic theory and lead to models useful in physics and engineering. This formalism involves integer-order differential calculus, but the electromagnetic diffusion points towards the adoption of a fractional calculus approach. This study addresses the skin effect and develops a new method for implementing fractional-order inductive elements. Two genetic algorithms are adopted, one for the system numerical evaluation and another for the parameter identification, both with good results.

This paper is about a PV system connected to the electric grid by power electronic converters, using classical PI controller. The modelling for the converters emulates the association of a DC-DC boost with a two-level power inverter (TwLI) or three-level power inverter (ThLI) in order to follow the performance of a testing experimental system. Pulse width modulation (PWMo) by sliding mode control (SMCo) associated with space vector modulation (SVMo) is applied to the boost and the inverter. The PV system is described by the five parameters equivalent circuit. Parameter identification and simulation studies are performed for comparison with the testing experimental system.

Over the last decades, calibration techniques have been widely used to improve the accuracy of robots and machine tools since they only involve software modification instead of changing the design and manufacture of the hardware. Traditionally, there are four steps are required for a calibration, i.e. error modeling, measurement, parameter identification and compensation. The objective of this thesis is to propose a method for the kinematics analysis and error modeling of a newly developed hybrid redundant robot IWR (Intersector Welding Robot), which possesses ten degrees of freedom (DOF) where 6-DOF in parallel and additional 4-DOF in serial. In this article, the problem of kinematics modeling and error modeling of the proposed IWR robot are discussed. Based on the vector arithmetic method, the kinematics model and the sensitivity model of the end-effector subject to the structure parameters is derived and analyzed. The relations between the pose (position and orientation) accuracy and manufacturing tolerances, actuation errors, and connection errors are formulated. Computer simulation is performed to examine the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Aufgrund ihrer Vorteile hinsichtlich Dauerhaftigkeit und Bauwerkssicherheit ist in Deutschland seit 1998 die externe Vorspannung in Hohlkastenbrücken zur Regelbauweise geworden. Durch Verwendung der austauschbaren externen Vorspannung verspricht man sich im Brückenbau weitere Verbesserungen der Robustheit und damit eine Verlängerung der Lebensdauer. Trotz des besseren Korrosionsschutzes im Vergleich zur internen Vorspannung mit Verbund sind Schäden nicht völlig auszuschließen. Um die Vorteile der externen Vorspannung zu nutzen, ist daher eine periodische Überwachung der Spanngliedkräfte, z. B. während der Hauptprüfung des Bauwerks, durchzuführen. Für die Überwachung der Spanngliedkräfte bei Schrägseilbrücken haben sich die Schwingungsmessmethoden als wirtschaftlich und leistungsfähig erwiesen. Für die Übertragung der Methode auf den Fall der externen Vorspannung, wo kürzere Schwingungslängen vorliegen, waren zusätzliche Untersuchungen hinsichtlich der effektiven Schwingungslänge, der Randbedingungen sowie der effektiven Biegesteifigkeit erforderlich. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde das Modellkorrekturverfahren, basierend auf der iterativen Anpassung eines F.E.-Modells an die identifizierten Eigenfrequenzen und Eigenformen des Spanngliedes, für die Bestimmung der Spanngliedkräfte verwendet. Dieses Verfahren ermöglicht die Berücksichtigung der Parameter (Schwingungslänge, Randbedingungen und effektive Biegesteifigkeit) bei der Identifikation der effektiven Spanngliedkräfte. Weiterhin ist eine Modellierung jeder beliebigen Spanngliedausbildung, z. B. bei unterschiedlichen Querschnitten in den Verankerungs- bzw. Umlenkbereichen, gewährleistet. Zur Anwendung bei der Ermittlung der Spanngliedkräfte wurde eine spezielle Methode, basierend auf den besonderen dynamischen Eigenschaften der Spannglieder, entwickelt, bei der die zuvor genannten Parameter innerhalb jedes Iterationsschrittes unabhängig korrigiert werden, was zur Robustheit des Identifikationsverfahrens beiträgt. Das entwickelte Verfahren ist in einem benutzerfreundlichen Programmsystem implementiert worden. Die erzielten Ergebnisse wurden mit dem allgemeinen Identifikationsprogramm UPDATE_g2 verglichen; dabei ist eine sehr gute Übereinstimmung festgestellt worden. Beim selbst entwickelten Verfahren wird die benötigte Rechenzeit auf ca. 30 % reduziert [100 sec à 30 sec]. Es bietet sich daher für die unmittelbare Auswertung vor Ort an. Die Parameteridentifikationsverfahren wurden an den Spanngliedern von insgesamt sechs Brücken (vier unterschiedliche Spannverfahren) angewendet. Die Anzahl der getesteten Spannglieder beträgt insgesamt 340. Die Abweichung zwischen den durch Schwingungs-messungen identifizierten und gemessenen (bei einer Brücke durch eine Abhebekontrolle) bzw. aufgebrachten Spanngliedkräften war kleiner als 3 %. Ferner wurden die Auswirkungen äußerer Einflüsse infolge Temperaturschwankungen und Verkehr bei den durchgeführten Messungen untersucht. Bei der praktischen Anwendung sind Besonderheiten aufgetreten, die durch die Verwendung des Modellkorrekturverfahrens weitgehend erfasst werden konnten. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die Verwendung dieses Verfahrens die Genauigkeit im Vergleich mit den bisherigen Schwingungsmessmethoden beachtlich erhöht. Ferner wird eine Erweiterung des Anwendungsbereiches auch auf Spezialfälle (z. B. bei einem unplanmäßigen Anliegen) gewährleistet.

Mit aktiven Magnetlagern ist es möglich, rotierende Körper durch magnetische Felder berührungsfrei zu lagern. Systembedingt sind bei aktiv magnetgelagerten Maschinen wesentliche Signale ohne zusätzlichen Aufwand an Messtechnik für Diagnoseaufgaben verfügbar. In der Arbeit wird ein Konzept entwickelt, das durch Verwendung der systeminhärenten Signale eine Diagnose magnetgelagerter rotierender Maschinen ermöglicht und somit neben einer kontinuierlichen Anlagenüberwachung eine schnelle Bewertung des Anlagenzustandes gestattet. Fehler können rechtzeitig und ursächlich in Art und Größe erkannt und entsprechende Gegenmaßnahmen eingeleitet werden. Anhand der erfassten Signale geschieht die Gewinnung von Merkmalen mit signal- und modellgestützten Verfahren. Für den Magnetlagerregelkreis erfolgen Untersuchungen zum Einsatz modellgestützter Parameteridentifikationsverfahren, deren Verwendbarkeit wird bei der Diagnose am Regler und Leistungsverstärker nachgewiesen. Unter Nutzung von Simulationsmodellen sowie durch Experimente an Versuchsständen werden die Merkmalsverläufe im normalen Referenzzustand und bei auftretenden Fehlern aufgenommen und die Ergebnisse in einer Wissensbasis abgelegt. Diese dient als Grundlage zur Festlegung von Grenzwerten und Regeln für die Überwachung des Systems und zur Erstellung wissensbasierter Diagnosemodelle. Bei der Überwachung werden die Merkmalsausprägungen auf das Überschreiten von Grenzwerten überprüft, Informationen über erkannte Fehler und Betriebszustände gebildet sowie gegebenenfalls Alarmmeldungen ausgegeben. Sich langsam anbahnende Fehler können durch die Berechnung der Merkmalstrends mit Hilfe der Regressionsanalyse erkannt werden. Über die bisher bei aktiven Magnetlagern übliche Überwachung von Grenzwerten hinaus erfolgt bei der Fehlerdiagnose eine Verknüpfung der extrahierten Merkmale zur Identifizierung und Lokalisierung auftretender Fehler. Die Diagnose geschieht mittels regelbasierter Fuzzy-Logik, dies gestattet die Einbeziehung von linguistischen Aussagen in Form von Expertenwissen sowie die Berücksichtigung von Unbestimmtheiten und ermöglicht damit eine Diagnose komplexer Systeme. Für Aktor-, Sensor- und Reglerfehler im Magnetlagerregelkreis sowie Fehler durch externe Kräfte und Unwuchten werden Diagnosemodelle erstellt und verifiziert. Es erfolgt der Nachweis, dass das entwickelte Diagnosekonzept mit beherrschbarem Rechenaufwand korrekte Diagnoseaussagen liefert. Durch Kaskadierung von Fuzzy-Logik-Modulen wird die Transparenz des Regelwerks gewahrt und die Abarbeitung der Regeln optimiert. Endresultat ist ein neuartiges hybrides Diagnosekonzept, welches signal- und modellgestützte Verfahren der Merkmalsgewinnung mit wissensbasierten Methoden der Fehlerdiagnose kombiniert. Das entwickelte Diagnosekonzept ist für die Anpassung an unterschiedliche Anforderungen und Anwendungen bei rotierenden Maschinen konzipiert.

This report describes a method how to perform measurements on boilers and stoves and how to identify parameters from the measurements for the boiler/stove-model TRNSYS Type 210. The model can be used for detailed annual system simulations using TRNSYS. Experience from measurements on three different pellet stoves and four boilers were used to develop this methodology. Recommendations for the set up of measurements are given and the re-quired combustion theory for the data evaluation and data preparation are given. The data evalua-tion showed that the uncertainties are quite large for the measured flue gas flow rate and for boilers and stoves with high fraction of energy going to the water jacket also the calculated heat rate to the room may have large uncertainties. A methodology for the parameter identification process and identified parameters for two different stoves and three boilers are given. Finally the identified models are compared with measured data showing that the model generally agreed well with meas-ured data during both stationary and dynamic conditions.

The importance of investigating cost reduction in materials and components for solar thermal systems is crucial at the present time. This work focuses on the influence of two different heat exchangers on the performance of a solar thermal system. Both heat exchangers studied are immersed helically coiled, one made with corrugated stainless steel tube, and the other made with finned copper tube with smooth inner surface.A test apparatus has been designed and a simple test procedure applied in order to study heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop of both coils. Thereafter, the resulting experimental data was used to perform a parameter identification of the heat exchangers, in order to obtain a TRNSYS model with its corresponding numerical expression. Also a representative small-scale combisystem model was designed in TRNSYS, in order to study the influence of both heat exchangers on the solar fraction of the system, when working at different flow rates.It has been found that the highest solar fraction is given by the corrugated stainless steel coil, when it works at the lowest flow rate (100 l/hr). For any higher flow rate, the studied copper coil presents a higher solar fraction. The advantageous low flow performance of stainless steel heat exchanger turns out to be beneficial for the particular case of solar thermal systems, where it is well known that low flow collector loops lead to enhanced store stratification, and consequently higher solar fractions.Finally, an optimization of the stainless steel heat exchanger length is carried out, according to economic figures. For the given combisystem model and boundary conditions, the optimum length value is found between 10 and 12 m.

A presente dissertação de mestrado tem por assunto a representação do comportamento mecânico do concreto sob cargas de curta e longa duração, incluindo efeitos não-lineares. Para tal fim trabalha-se com equações baseadas na teoria do dano contínuo. São propostas equações para o caso triaxial e, baseado nelas, é implementado um programa computacional. Com diversos exemplos verifica-se que: a) A solução numérica aproxima bem os resultados teóricos. b) O comportamento do modelo representa bem as características qualitativas do concreto. c) O modelo permite aproximar bem alguns resultados experimentais, mas ainda deve ser aperfeiçoado, particularmente no que refere-se à identificação de parâmetros.

This work presents a modelling and identification method for a wheeled mobile robot, including the actuator dynamics. Instead of the classic modelling approach, where the robot position coordinates (x,y) are utilized as state variables (resulting in a non linear model), the proposed discrete model is based on the travelled distance increment Delta_l. Thus, the resulting model is linear and time invariant and it can be identified through classical methods such as Recursive Least Mean Squares. This approach has a problem: Delta_l can not be directly measured. In this paper, this problem is solved using an estimate of Delta_l based on a second order polynomial approximation. Experimental data were colected and the proposed method was used to identify the model of a real robot

The ability of neural networks to realize some complex nonlinear function makes them attractive for system identification. This paper describes a novel method using artificial neural networks to solve robust parameter estimation problems for nonlinear models with unknown-but-bounded errors and uncertainties. More specifically, a modified Hopfield network is developed and its internal parameters are computed using the valid-subspace technique. These parameters guarantee the network convergence to the equilibrium points. A solution for the robust estimation problem with unknown-but-bounded error corresponds to an equilibrium point of the network. Simulation results are presented as an illustration of the proposed approach.
