Endometriosis is a gynecologic disease that is characterized by nonspecific symptoms and invasive diagnostics. To date, there is no adequate noninvasive method for the diagnosis of endometriosis. Although more than 100 potential biomarkers have been investigated in blood and/or peritoneal fluid, none of these has proven useful in clinical practice. The aim to find a suitable panel of biomarkers that would allow noninvasive diagnosis thus remains of interest. We evaluated the concentrations of 16 cytokines and other secretory proteins in serum and peritoneal fluid of 58 women with ovarian endometriosis (cases) and 40 healthy women undergoing sterilization or patients with benign ovarian cysts (controls) using multiplexed double fluorescence-based immunometric assay platform and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Significantly higher concentrations of glycodelin-A were shown in serum, and significantly higher levels of glycodelin-A, IL-6, and IL-8, and lower levels of leptin were measured in the peritoneal fluid of cases versus controls. In serum, the best performance was shown by models that included the ratio of leptin/glycodelin-A and the ratio of ficolin 2/glycodelin-A, whereas in the peritoneal fluid the best models included the ratio of biglycan/leptin, regulated on activation normal T-cell expressed and secreted/IL-6 and ficolin-2/glycodelin-A, and IL-8 per milligram of total protein, all in combination with age. The models using serum and peritoneal fluid distinguished between ovarian endometriosis patients and controls regardless of the menstrual cycle phase with relatively high sensitivity (72.5% to 84.2%), specificity (78.4% to 91.2%), and area under the curve (0.85 to 0.90).

panels provides a quick way to count the number of panels (groups) in a dataset and display some basic information about the sizes of the panels. Furthermore, -panels- can be used as a prefix command to other Stata commands to apply them to panel units instead of individual observations. This is useful, for example, if you want to compute frequency distributions or summary statistics for panel characteristics.

GRC is a cementitious composite material made up of a cement mortar matrix and chopped glass fibers. Due to its outstanding mechanical properties, GRC has been widely used to produce cladding panels and some civil engineering elements. Impact failure of cladding panels made of GRC may occur during production if some tool falls onto the panel, due to stone or other objects impacting at low velocities or caused by debris projected after a blast. Impact failure of a front panel of a building may have not only an important economic value but also human lives may be at risk if broken pieces of the panel fall from the building to the pavement. Therefore, knowing GRC impact strength is necessary to prevent economic costs and putting human lives at risk. One-stage light gas gun is an impact test machine capable of testing different materials subjected to impact loads. An experimental program was carried out, testing GRC samples of five different formulations, commonly used in building industry. Steel spheres were shot at different velocities on square GRC samples. The residual velocity of the projectiles was obtained both using a high speed camera with multiframe exposure and measuring the projectile’s penetration depth in molding clay blocks. Tests were performed on young and artificially aged GRC samples to compare GRC’s behavior when subjected to high strain rates. Numerical simulations using a hydrocode were made to analyze which parameters are most important during an impact event. GRC impact strength was obtained from test results. Also, GRC’s embrittlement, caused by GRC aging, has no influence on GRC impact behavior due to the small size of the projectile. Also, glass fibers used in GRC production only maintain GRC panels’ integrity but have no influence on GRC’s impact strength. Numerical models have reproduced accurately impact tests.

This thesis investigates the acoustic properties of microperforated panels as an alternative to passive noise control. The first chapters are devoted to the review of analytical models to obtain the acoustic impedance and absorption coefficient of perforated panels. The use of panels perforated with circular holes or with slits is discussed. The theoretical models are presented and some modifications are proposed to improve the modeling of the physical phenomena occurring at the perforations of the panels. The absorption band is widened through the use of multiple layer microperforated panels and/or the combination of a millimetric panel with a porous layer that can be a fibrous material or a nylon mesh. A commercial micrometric mesh downstream a millimetric panel is proposed as a very efficient and low cost solution for controlling noise in reduced spaces. The simulated annealing algorithm is used in order to optimize the panel construction to provide a maximum of absorption in a determined wide band frequency range. Experiments are carried out at normal sound incidence and plane waves. One example is shown for a double layer microperforated panel subjected to grazing flow. A good agreement is achieved between the theory and the experiments. RESUMEN En esta tesis se investigan las propiedades acústicas de paneles micro perforados como una alternativa al control pasivo del ruido. Los primeros capÃtulos están dedicados a la revisión de los modelos de análisis para obtener la impedancia acústica y el coeficiente de absorción de los paneles perforados. El uso de paneles perforados con agujeros circulares o con ranuras es discutido. Se presentan diferentes modelos y se proponen algunas modificaciones para mejorar la modelización de los fenómenos fÃsicos que ocurren en las perforaciones. La banda de absorción se ensancha a través del uso de capas múltiples de paneles micro perforados y/o la combinación de un panel de perforaciones milimétricas combinado con una capa porosa que puede ser un material fibroso o una malla de nylon. Se propone el uso de una malla micrométrica detrás de un panel milimétrico como una solución económica y eficiente para el control del ruido en espacios reducidos. El algoritmo de recocido simulado se utiliza con el fin de optimizar la construcción de paneles micro perforados para proporcionar un máximo de absorción en una banda determinada frecuencias. Los experimentos se llevan a cabo en la incidencia normal de sonido y ondas planas. Se muestra un ejemplo de panel micro perforado de doble capa sometido a flujo rasante. Se consigue un buen acuerdo entre la teorÃa y los experimentos.

A large number of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures built in earthquake-prone areas such as Haiti are vulnerable to strong ground motions. Structures in developing countries need low-cost seismic retrofit solutions to reduce their vulnerability. This paper investigates the feasibility of using masonry infill walls to reduce deformations and damage caused by strong ground motions in brittle and weak RC frames designed only for gravity loads. A numerical experiment was conducted in which several idealized prototypes representing RC frame structures of school buildings damaged during the Port-au-Prince earthquake (Haiti, 2010) were strengthened by adding elements representing masonry infill walls arranged in different configurations. Each configuration was characterized by the ratio Rm of the area of walls in the direction of the ground motion (in plan) installed in each story to the total floor area. The numerical representations of these idealized RC frame structures with different values of Rm were (hypothetically) subjected to three major earthquakes with peak ground accelerations of approximately 0.5g. The results of the non-linear dynamic response analyses were summarized in tentative relationships between Rm and four parameters commonly used to characterize the seismic response of structures: interstory drift, Park and Ang indexes of damage, and total amount of energy dissipated by the main frame. It was found that Rm=4% is a reasonable minimum design value for seismic retrofitting purposes in cases in which available resources are not sufficient to afford conventional retrofit measures.

During launch, satellite and their equipment are subjected to loads of random nature and with a wide frequency range. Their vibro-acoustic response is an important issue to be analysed, for example for folded solar arrays and antennas. The main issue at low modal density is the modelling combinations engaging air layers, structures and external fluid. Depending on the modal density different methodologies, as FEM, BEM and SEA should be considered. This work focuses on the analysis of different combinations of the methodologies previously stated used in order to characterise the vibro-acoustic response of two rectangular sandwich structure panels isolated and engaging an air layer between them under a diffuse acoustic field. Focusing on the modelling of air layers, different models are proposed. To illustrate the phenomenology described and studied, experimental results from an acoustic test on an ARA-MKIII solar array in folded configuration are presented along with numerical results.

Sandwich panels of laminated gypsum and rock wool have shown large pathology of cracking due to excessive slabs deflection. Currently the most widespread use of this material is as vertical elements of division or partition, with no structural function, what justifies that there are no studies on the mechanism of fracture and mechanical properties related to it. Therefore, and in order to reduce the cracking problem, it is necessary to progress in the simulation and prediction of the behaviour under tensile and shear load of such panels, although in typical applications have no structural responsability.

The determination of the loads on traffic sign panels in the current standards does not, in general, take into account the vehicle-induced loads, as explained by Quinn, Baker and Wright (QBW in what follows) (J. Wind Eng. Ind. Aerodyn. 89 (2001) 831). On the other hand, a report from Cali and Covert (CC) (J. Wind Eng. Ind. Aerodyn. 84 (2000) 87) indicates that in highway sign support structures, vehicle-induced loads have led to premature failures in some cases. The aim of this paper is to present a mathematical model for the vehicle-induced load on a flat sign panel, simple enough to give analytical results, but able to explain the main characteristics of the phenomenon. The results of the theoretical model help to explain the behaviour observed in the experiments performed in previous studies.
