Model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) was covalently grafted onto poly[(L-lactide)co-carbonate] microsphere surfaces by "click chemistry." The grafting was confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The maximum amount of surface-grafted BSA was 45 mg.g(-1). The secondary structure of the grafted BSA was analyzed by FTIR and the results demonstrated that the grafting did not affect protein structure. This strategy can also be used on microspheres prepared from poly(L-lactide)/poly[(L-lactide)-co-carbonate] blend materials.

Amphiphilic biodegradable star-shaped polymer was conveniently prepared by the Sn(Oct)(2)-catalyzed ring opening polymerization of c-caprolactone (CL) with hyperbranched poly(ester amide) (PEA) as a macroinitiator. Various monomer/initiator ratios were employed to vary the length of the PCL arms. H-1 NMR and FTIR characterizations showed the successful synthesis of star polymer with high initiation efficiency. SEC analysis using triple detectors, RI, light scattering, and viscosity confirmed the controlled manner of polymerization and the star architecture.

A convenient and cost-effective strategy for synthesis of hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s from commercially available dicarboxylic acids (A(2)) and multihydroxyl secondary amine (CB2) has been developed. By optimizing the conditions of model reactions, the AB(2)-type intermediates were formed dominantly during the initial reaction stage. Without any purification, the AB(2) intermediate was subjected to thermal polycondensation in the absence of any catalyst to prepare the aliphatic and semiaromatic hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s bearing multi-hydroxyl end-groups.

Lewis base modification strategy on rare earth ternary catalyst was disclosed to enhance nucleophilic ability of active center during copolymerization of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide (PO), poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) with H-T linkages over 83%, and number-average molecular weight (M-n) up to 100 kg/mol was synthesized at room temperature using Y(CCl3OO)(3)-ZnEt2-glycerine catalyst and 1,10-phenanthroline (PHEN) cocatalyst. Coordination of PHEN with active Zinc center enhanced the nucleophilic ability of the metal carbonate, which became more regio-specific in attacking carbon in PO, leading to PPC with improved H-T linkages.

The diffusion of water in a phase-separated biodegradable poly(ester urethane) shape-memory polymer with poly(E-caprolactone) (PCL) as the soft segment was investigated using time-resolved FTIR-ATR. On the basis of the band fitting and water ordering in drawn films, the broad water band in the 3800-2800 cm(-1) region was decomposed into four bands located at 3620, 3510, 3400, and 3260 cm(-1), and the first two components at 3620 and 35 10 cm(-1) were assigned to the vibrations of antisymmetric and symmetric stretching of water hydrogen bonded with the C=O group of the soft segment. The other two were associated with water bonded to the urethane hard segments in the forms of N-H:O-H:O=C bridge hydrogen bond and double hydrogen bonds with two C=O groups, respectively. Furthermore, band fitting and two-dimensional correlation analyses revealed that in the diffusion process, water first diffuses into the continuous soft-rich PCL phase and then into the hard-rich urethane domains, forming double hydrogen bonds with two C=O groups prior to the bridge hydrogen bond in the form of N-H:O-H:O=C.

The hydrogen bonding and crystallization of a biodegradable poly(ester urethane) copolymer based on poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) as the soft segment were investigated by FTIR. On slow cooling from melt, the onset and the progress of the crystallization of the urethane hard segments were correlated to the position, width, and relative intensity of the hydrogen-bonded N-H stretching band. The interconversion between the "free" and hydrogen-bonded N-H and C=O groups in the urethane units in the process was also revealed by 2D correlation analysis of the FTIR data. The crystallization of the PLLA soft segments was monitored by the ester C=O stretching and the skeletal vibrations. It was revealed that the PLLA crystallization was restricted by the phase separation and the urethane crystallization, and at cooling rates of 10 degrees C/min or higher, the crystallization of the PLLA soft segments was prohibited.

Poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) showed predominantly degradation under electron-beam irradiation, accompanied by deterioration of its mechanical performance due to sharp decrease of the molecular weight. Crosslinked PPC was prepared by addition of polyfunctional monomer (PFM) to enhance the mechanical performance of PPC. When 8 wt% of PFM like triallyl isocyanurate (TAIL) was added, crosslinked PPC with a gel fraction of 60.7% was prepared at 50 kGy irradiation dose, which showed a tensile strength at 20 degrees C of 45.5 MPa, whereas it was only 38.5 MPa for pure PPC. The onset degradation temperature (T-i) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of this crosslinked PPC was 246 degrees C and 45 degrees C, respectively, a significant increase related to pure PPC of 211 degrees C and 36 C. Therefore, thermal and mechanical performances of PPC could be improved via electron-beam irradiation in the presence of suitable PFM.

Polylactide (PLA) was melt blended with a biodegradable hyperbranched poly(ester amide) (HBP) to enhance its flexibility and toughness without sacrificing comprehensive performance. The advantage of using HBP was due to its unique spherical shape, low melt viscosity, and abundant functional end groups together with its easy access. Rheological measurement showed that blending PLA with as little as 2.5% HBP resulted in a 40% reduction of melt viscosity. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of PLA in the blends decreased slightly with the increase of HBP content, indicating partial miscibility which resulted from intermolecular interactions via H-bonding. The H-bonding involving CO of PLA with OH and NH of HBP was evidenced by FTIR analysis for the first time. The HBP component, as a heterogeneous nucleating agent, accelerated the crystallization rate of PLA. Remarkably, with the increase of HBP content, the elongation at break of PLA blends dramatically increased without severe loss in tensile strength, even the tensile strength increased within 10% content of HBP. The stress-strain curves and the SEM photos of impact-fractured surface showed the material changed from brittle to ductile failure with the addition of HBP. Reasonable interfacial adhesion via H-bonding and finely dispersed particulate structure of HBP in PLA were proposed to be responsible for the improved mechanical properties.

A novel biodegradable aliphatic poly(L-lactide-co-carbonate) bearing pendant acetylene groups was successfully prepared by ring-opening copolymerization of L-lactide (LA) with 5-methyl-5-propargyloxycarbonyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one (PC) in the presence of benzyl alcohol as initiator with ZnEt2 as catalyst in bulk at 100 degrees C and subsequently used for grafting 2-azidoethyl beta-D-glucopyranoside and 2-azidoethyl beta-lactoside by the typical "click reaction," that is Cu(I)-catalyzed cycloaddition of azide and alkyne. The density of acetylene groups in the copolymer can be tailored by the molar ratio of PC to LA during the copolymerization. The aliphatic copolymers grafted with sugars showed low cytotoxicity to L929 cells, improved hydrophilic properties and specific recognition and binding ability with lectins, that is Concanavalin A (Con A) and Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA). Therefore, this kind of sugar-grafted copolymer could be a good candidate in variety of biomedical applications.

A novel biodegradable poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-based polyurethanes (PCL-PEG-PU) with pendant amino groups was synthesized by direct coupling of PEG ester of NH2-protected-(aspartic acid) (PEG-Asp-PEG diols) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) diols with hexamethylene dissocyanate (HDI) under mild reaction conditions and by subsequent deprotection of benzyloxycarbonyl (Cbz) groups. GPC, H-1 NMR, and C-13 NMR studies confirmed the polymer structures and the complete deprotection. DSC and WXRD results indicated that the crystallinity of the copolymer was enhanced with increasing PCL diols in the copolymer. The content of amino group in the polymer could be adjusted by changing the molar ratio of PEG-Asp-PEG diols to PCL diols. Thus the results of this study provide a good way to prepare polyurethanes bearing hydrophilic PEG segments and reactive amino groups without complicated synthesis.

A systematic investigation by FTIR spectroscopy was undertaken on blends of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) and bisphenol A (BPA). It provided direct evidence of the hydrogen bond (H-bond) between BPA O-H groups and PPC C=O groups. Using a curve-fitting method, qualitative as well as quantitative information concerning this H-bond interaction was obtained. The inter-H-bond in PPC/BPA blends was weaker than the self-H-bond in BPA. The absorptivities of the free and the H-bonded C=O groups were nearly equal. The fraction of H-bonded C=O in the blends increased with BPA content and leveled off at a value close to 40%. Finally, FTIR-temperature measurements of pure PPC and a representative blend were reported: by monitoring the peak areas of C=O absorptions, the dissociation of the inter-H-bonds and the thermal degradation of PPC were observed. It revealed that the presence of BPA clearly retarded the thermal degradation of PPC.

A series of optically active poly(ester imide)s (PEsI's) has been synthesized by the polycondensation reactions of new axially asymmetric dianhydrides, that is, (R)-2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzoyloxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride and (S)-2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzoyloxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride, and various diamines with aromatic, semiaromatic, and aliphatic structures. The polymers have inherent viscosities of 0.45-0.70 dL/g, very good solubility in common organic solvents, glass-transition temperatures of 124-290 degreesC, and good thermal stability. Wide-angle X-ray crystallography of these polymers shows no crystal diffraction. In comparison with model compounds, an enhanced optical rotatory power has been observed for the repeat unit of optically active PEsI's based on aromatic diamines, and it has been attributed to a collaborative asymmetric perturbation of chiral 1,1'-binaphthyls along the rigid backbones.
