Maternal aggression is under the control of a wide variety of factors that prime the females for aggression or trigger the aggressive event. Maternal attacks are triggered by the perception of sensory cues from the intruder, and here we have identified a site in the hypothalamus of lactating rats that is highly responsive to the male intruder—the ventral premammillary nucleus (PMv). The PMv is heavily targeted by the medial amygdalar nucleus, and we used lesion and immediate-early gene studies to test our working hypothesis that the PMv signals the presence of a male intruder and transfers this information to the network organizing maternal aggression. PMv-lesioned dams exhibit significantly reduced maternal aggression, without affecting maternal care. The Fos analysis revealed that PMv influences the activation of hypothalamic and septal sites shown to be mobilized during maternal aggression, including the medial preoptic nucleus (likely to represent an important locus to integrate priming stimuli critical for maternal aggression), the caudal two-thirds of the hypothalamic attack area (comprising the ventrolateral part of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus and the adjacent tuberal region of the lateral hypothalamic area, critical for the expression of maternal aggression), and the ventral part of the anterior bed nuclei of the stria terminalis (presently discussed as being involved in controlling neuroendocrine and autonomic responses accompanying maternal aggression). These findings reveal an important role for the PMv in detecting the male intruder and how this nucleus modulates the network controlling maternal aggression.

Prehension in an act of coordinated reaching and grasping. The reaching component is concerned with bringing the hand to object to be grasped (transport phase); the grasping component refers to the shaping of the hand according to the object features (grasping phase) (Jeannerod, 1981). Reaching and grasping involve different muscles, proximal and distal muscles respectively, and are controlled by different parietofrontal circuit (Jeannerod et al., 1995): a medial circuit, involving area of superior parietal lobule and dorsal premotor area 6 (PMd) (dorsomedial visual stream), is mainly concerned with reaching; a lateral circuit, involving the inferior parietal lobule and ventral premotor area 6 (PMv) (dorsolateral visual stream), with grasping. Area V6A is located in the caudalmost part of the superior parietal lobule, so it belongs to the dorsomedial visual stream; it contains neurons sensitive to visual stimuli (Galletti et al. 1993, 1996, 1999) as well as cells sensitive to the direction of gaze (Galletti et al. 1995) and cells showing saccade-related activity (Nakamura et al. 1999; Kutz et al. 2003). Area V6A contains also arm-reaching neurons likely involved in the control of the direction of the arm during movements towards objects in the peripersonal space (Galletti et al. 1997; Fattori et al. 2001). The present results confirm this finding and demonstrate that during the reach-to-grasp the V6A neurons are also modulated by the orientation of the wrist. Experiments were approved by the Bioethical Committee of the University of Bologna and were performed in accordance with National laws on care and use of laboratory animals and with the European Communities Council Directive of 24th November 1986 (86/609/EEC), recently revised by the Council of Europe guidelines (Appendix A of Convention ETS 123). Experiments were performed in two awake Macaca fascicularis. Each monkey was trained to sit in a primate chair with the head restrained to perform reaching and grasping arm movements in complete darkness while gazing a small fixation point. The object to be grasped was a handle that could have different orientation. We recorded neural activity from 163 neurons of the anterior parietal sulcus; 116/163 (71%) neurons were modulated by the reach-to-grasp task during the execution of the forward movements toward the target (epoch MOV), 111/163 (68%) during the pulling of the handle (epoch HOLD) and 102/163 during the execution of backward movements (epoch M2) (t_test, p ≤ 0.05). About the 45% of the tested cells turned out to be sensitive to the orientation of the handle (one way ANOVA, p ≤ 0.05). To study how the distal components of the movement, such as the hand preshaping during the reaching of the handle, could influence the neuronal discharge, we compared the neuronal activity during the reaching movements towards the same spatial location in reach-to-point and reach-to-grasp tasks. Both tasks required proximal arm movements; only the reach-to-grasp task required distal movements to orient the wrist and to shape the hand to grasp the handle. The 56% of V6A cells showed significant differences in the neural discharge (one way ANOVA, p ≤ 0.05) between the reach-to-point and the reach-to-grasp tasks during MOV, 54% during HOLD and 52% during M2. These data show that reaching and grasping are processed by the same population of neurons, providing evidence that the coordination of reaching and grasping takes place much earlier than previously thought, i.e., in the parieto-occipital cortex. The data here reported are in agreement with results of lesions to the medial posterior parietal cortex in both monkeys and humans, and with recent imaging data in humans, all of them indicating a functional coupling in the control of reaching and grasping by the medial parietofrontal circuit.

ABSTRACT This investigation presents a study on thermal comfort following the adaptive approach for the determination of the thermal comfort temperatures and ranges of subjects accustomed to mechanically refrigerated spaces in dwellings with air conditioning (AA) systems in the hot and humid weather of the city of Maracaibo (Venezuela) and the ensuing energy use implications it has on the satisfaction of such demand of comfortability in the residential sector of the city. For the estimation of the comfort temperature (Tc) and the range of comfort temperatures different statistical analysis methodologies were used, which are then compared to the respective values calculated with the PMV index, also discusses other aspects related with thermal comfortability were analyzed, such as the responses on the different scales of perception of thermal comfortability, preferences, experiences and expectations of the analyzed subjects. The energetic implications are determined through the residential energy consumption related exclusively with the variation of the Tc between the originally calculated for naturally ventilated (NV) spaces in Maracaibo (Bravo y Gonzalez 2001a) and the one calculated on the present study with AA. For this, a new methodology was developed by partially modifying the Yamtraipat et al (2006) proposal. Among the results and conclusions of this study are that 57 % of the studied subjects prefer the same comfortable conditions experienced on AA environments and only a 30 % prefer to experience slightly cooler or warmer environments. Also, estimations of the Tc and its respective range vary according to the used methodology. With the conventional adaptive methodology, the Tc is estimated in 25 °C with a wide range of 6 °C, between 22 °C and 28 °C, while using the “thermal sensation intervals averages method” (Gomez-Azpeitia et al, 2007) the Tc is estimated in 24 °C on a narrow range between 22.5 °C and 25.5 °C and a widened range of 21 °C to 27 °C (6 °C in amplitude), a range where . of the studied subjects are located. Both Tc are very close to the optimum operation temperature of 24.5 °C (with a range between 23 °C and 26 °C) established on the ISO 7730:1994 and ASHRAE 55:1992 international norms for the summer on warm climates. However, the estimated Tc with the PMV indexes results to be 1 °C and 2 °C above the Tc estimated with the adaptive methodology (25 °C) and the thermal sensation intervals averages method (24 °C), respectively. With the applied methodology and this study sample, its estimated that if a Tbsint equal or close to 28 °C (equivalent to the Tc in NV spaces in Maracaibo) was registered in all measured spaces (with Tbsint between 19 °C and 29 °C) the total yearly energy savings would be of 1.648,1 GWh in a year with respect to the AA consumption in the year 2007 (2.522.3 GWh in a year), while the energy savings assuming a Tbinst of 24 °C and 25 °C result in 651.9 GWh and 425.7 Gwh in a year, respectively. This means that the respective additional electrical energy consumption amount to 60.4 % and 74.2 %, respectively. Finally, the habits or behaviors adopted by the subjects analyzed on this study, added to the predominant manifestations of comfortability in mechanically refrigerated environments result in greater adaptations to colder conditions and lower thermal comfort temperature demands, with the consequential increase in power consumption to meet them.
