There is a relative lack of technical studies on the adequate management of organic wastes from food processing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of applying doses of a byproduct from guava processing, in the presence and absence of mineral fertilization, on the fertility of a an Ultisol (or Red-Yellow Argisol) under laboratory conditions. An entirely randomized 5x2 factorial experimental design was used with five byproduct doses, in the presence and absence of mineral fertilization, with four repetitions, for a total of 40 experimental units. Under the experimental conditions, the attributes pH, OM, K, Mg, BS, T, V, B, Fe, Zn and S-SO42- were affected by the guava byproduct doses, as well as by the presence or absence of mineral fertilization. With the use of this fertilization, the variables OM, K, H+Al, T, Fe and Zn increased more as a function of byproduct dose than in the absence of fertilization. The results obtained demonstrate the potential of using this waste material in the cycling and supply of nutrients.

The organic wastes need to be adequately managed, in order to avoid the environmental pollution and damage to the public health. So, this work aimed to study the composting process using two methods: manual and mechanized, for the treatment of bovine ruminal waste. This residue is generated in large proportions during the bovine slaughter process, and it can lead environmental degradation and contamination, or even damage to the public health, when not treated. For the initial adjustment of the composting parameters, it was incorporated the residue of coffee husks. The manual composting system was done by the manually aerated piles, while the mechanized composting system was done in a reactor coupled to a compressor that enabled the aeration of the system. The proportions used in both systems were: 90% bovine rumen (R) and 10% coffe husks (CC); 85% bovine rumen and 15% coffe husks; 80% bovine rumen and 20% coffe husks. The parameters determined during the monitoring of the composting process were: temperature, pH, moisture, organic matter, ash, organic carbon, Kjeldahl nitrogen and C/N ratio. The results obtained during the monitoring of the piles and reactors presented similar behavior, except for the parameters Kjeldahl nitrogen and C/N ratio. When compared to the “Instrução Normativa no 25 de 23/07/2009 do Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento”, the organic produced composts with the best results were: pile 2 (85% R; 15% CC) and reactors 1 (90% R; 10% CC) e 2 (85% R; 15% CC)

With the constant increase in the municipal solid waste (MSW) generation, mainly due to the high consumption patterns, it becomes difficult to manage correctly the solid waste and thus minimize their impact on the environment. One of the most problems of the large amount of waste generated is the liquid originated from physical, chemical and biological decomposition process of organic wastes, with dark color and bad smell, called leachate: it can reach the soil, polluting the groundwater and the surface water. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the process of coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation applied in the treatment of the leachate generated in the not controlled landfill of Presidente Prudente, Sao Paulo... Enzyveba, a partially characterized complex consortium of not-adapted microorganisms developed through prolonged stabilization of organic wastes, was found to markedly intensify the aerobic remediation of aged PAH- and PCB-contaminated soil by acting as a source of exogenous specialized microorganisms and nutrients. Thus, Enzyveba was tested in the bioremediation of Diesel (G1) and HiQ Diesel (G2) contaminated soils under aerobic slurry-phase conditions by means of a chemical, microbiological, ecotoxicological integrated analytical procedure. The addition of Enzyveba resulted in a higher availability of cultivable specialized bacteria and fungi but this resulted in a slight intensification of soil remediation, probably because of the high content of nutrients and specialized microorganisms of the soil. In many cases, the biotreatability of soils impacted by diesel fuel is limited by their poor content of autochthonous pollutant-degrading microorganisms. Thus, bioaugmentation with stable and reproducible cultures with the required broad substrate specificity might be the solution for a successful remediation. Two microbial consortia, ENZ-G1 and ENZ-G2, were enriched from Enzyveba on G1 and G2. Both consortia consist of a similar composition of bacterial and fungal species. They exhibited a comparable and significant biodegradation capability by removing about 90% of 1 g/l of diesel fuel under liquid culture conditions. Given their remarkable biodegradation potential, richness of quite diverse microbes, stability and resistance after cryopreservation at -20 °C for several months, both consortia appear very interesting candidates for bioaugmentation on site. The mycoflora of a soil historically contaminated by high concentration of PCBs was characterised before, at the beginning and at the end of the biotreatment mentioned above. Several mitosporic fungi isolated from soil grew in presence of a mixture of three PCBs congeners when also glucose was provided. This is the first study in which 5 strains of mitosporic species able to biodegrade PCB are reported in the literature.
