Based on free carrier plasma dispersion effect, a 2 x 2 optical switch is fabricated in a silicon-on-insulator substrate by inductively coupled-plasma technology and ion implantation. The device has a Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure, in which two directional couplers serve as the power splitter and combiner. The switch presents an insertion loss of 3.04 dB and a response time of 496 ns.

Based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure, a 2 x 2 optical switch is fabricated on SOI wafer. Modulation of the refractive index of MZI arms is achieved through free carriers plasma dispersion effect of silicon. The device presents an insertion loss as low as 3.44 dB and a response time as small as 300 ns. The crosstalk and extinction ratio are -15.54 and 14.9 dB, respectively. Detailed analysis and explanation of the operating behaviors are also presented. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

By using V-prism refractometer, the refractive indices of a polyetherketone (PEK-c) guest-host polymer system were measured with the polymer in solutions. The Lorenz-Lorentz local field formalism was used in the calculation of the refractive indices of the polymers from the measured indices of the polymer solutions and the pure solvent by using V-prism refractometer. The refractive index dispersions of the polymers were obtained by fitting the measured indices of the polymers to Sellmeyer equation. The method allows for an accuracy in index of 0.7% in the determination of the polymer indices. In addition, a large difference between the indices of the polymer and the solvent, and a higher polymer volume fraction in the measured polymer solution are favorable for a high accuracy. Solutions for fiber-optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs) with dispersion fluctuations are derived using matrix operators. On the basis of the propagation matrix product and the hybrid genetic algorithm, we have optimized and compared single- and dual-pump FOPAs with zero-dispersion-wavelength variations. The simulations prove that the design of FOPAs involves multimodal function optimization problems. The numerical results show that dual-pump FOPAs are highly sensitive to dispersion fluctuations whereas dispersion variations have less impact on the gain of single-pump FOPAs. To increase signal gain and reduce ripple, dual-pump FOPAs, instead of single-pump FOPAs, have to be carefully optimized with a suitable multisegment fiber structure rather than a one-segment fiber structure. The different combinations of multisegment fibers can provide highly different gain properties. The increase in gain is at the cost of the ripple.

We have investigated the dressed effects of non-degenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) and demonstrated a phase-sensitive method of studying the fifth-order nonlinear susceptibility due to atomic coherence in RN-type four-level system. In the presence of a strong coupling field, NDFWM spectrum exhibits Autler-Townes splitting, accompanied by either suppression or enhancement of the NDFWM signal, which is directly related to the competition between the absorption and dispersion contributions. The heterodyne-detected nonlinear absorption and dispersion of six-wave mixing signal in the RN-type system show that the hybrid radiation-matter detuning damping oscillation is in the THz range and can be controlled and modified through the colour-locked correlation of twin noisy fields.

We propose a method of effectively extending the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) gain bandwidth in a single-mode optical fiber to reduce group-velocity-dispersion (GVD)-dependent pulse spread of SBS slow light. This can be done by overlapping doublet SBS gain spectra synthesized from a single pump laser. Numerical calculations are performed to verify our proposed method. We find that there exists the optimum spectral separation between two center frequencies of the doublet SBS gain spectrum with respect to the inherent spectral width of the pump laser, which makes it possible to effectively reduce the signal pulse broadening due to GVD. We show that the maximum time delay of the amplified signal pulse can be approximately two times longer than that by a previously reported method using a single broadband pump laser. The use of alpha-power chirped fiber Bragg gratings for dispersion cancellation in an optical fiber link is discussed. Numerical and theoretical investigation of recompressing the dispersion-broadened pulse by using alpha-power chirped gratings is made, which shows that, the dispersion-broadened Gaussian pulse after 100 km standard fiber (with zero dispersion at lambda = 1.3 mu m) trnasmission at lambda = 1.55 mu m with initial width of T-FWHM = 33ps (full width at half maximum) can be perfectly recompressed with the peak reflectivity of 82% by using a 30 mm long alpha-power chirped fiber grating with proper a value and optimal grating parameters.

The enhanced optical properties of metal films periodically perforated with an array of sub-wavelength size holes have recently been widely studied in the field of surface plasmon optics. The ability to design the optical transmission of such nanostructures, which act as plasmonic crystals, by varying their geometrical parameters gives them great flexibility for numerous applications in photonics, opto-electronics, and sensing. Transforming these passive optical elements into devices that may be actively controlled has presented a new challenge. Here, we report on the realization of an electrically controlled nanostructured optical system based on the unique properties of surface plasmon polaritonic crystals in contact with a liquid crystal (LC) layer. We discuss the effect of LC layer modulation on the surface plasmon dispersion, the related optical transmission and the underlying mechanism. The reported effect may be used to achieve active spectral tuneability and switching in a wide range of applications.

Tailoring optical properties of artificial metamaterials, whose optical properties go beyond the limitations of conventional and naturally occurring materials, is of importance in fundamental research and has led to many important applications such as security imaging, invisible cloak, negative refraction, ultrasensitive sensing, transformable and switchable optics. Herein, by precisely controlling the size, symmetry and topology of alphabetical metamaterials with U, S, Y, H, U-bar and V shapes, we have obtained highly tunable optical response covering visible-to-infrared (Vis-NIR) optical frequency. In addition, we show a detailed study on the physical origin of resonance modes, plasmonic coupling, the dispersion of electronic and magnetic surface plasmon polaritons, and the possibility of negative refraction. We have found that all the electronic and magnetic modes follow the dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons thus essentially they are electronic- and magnetic-surface-plasmon-polaritons-like (ESPP-like and MSPP-like) modes resulted from diffraction coupling between localized surface plasmon and freely-propagating light. Based on the fill factor and formula of magnetism permeability, we predict that the alphabetical metamaterials should show the negative refraction capability in visible optical frequency. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the specific ultrasensitive surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing of monolayer molecules and femtomolar food contaminants by tuning their resonance to match the laser wavelength, or by tuning the laser wavelength to match the plasmon resonance of metamaterials. Our tunable alphabetical metamaterials provide a generic platform to study the electromagnetic properties of metamaterials and explore the novel applications in optical frequency.

A review of the main techniques that have been proposed for temporal processing of optical pulses that are the counterpart of the well-known spatial arrangements will be presented. They are translated to the temporal domain via the space-time duality and implemented with electrooptical phase and amplitude modulators and dispersive devices. We will introduce new variations of the conventional approaches and we will focus on their application to optical communications systems

This paper reviews the fundamental concepts and basic theory of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fibers. It introduces a unified notation and methodology to link the various views and concepts in Jones space and Stokes space. The discussion includes the relation between Jones vectors and Stokes vectors, rotation matrices, the definition and representation of PMD vectors, the laws of infinitesimal rotation, and the rules for PMD vector concatenation.
