The identification of transport parameters by inverse modeling often suffers from equifinality or parameter correlation when models are fitted to observations of the solute breakthrough in column outflow experiments. This parameters uncertainty can be approached by the application of multiple experimental designs such as column experiments in open-flow mode and the recently proposed closed-flow mode. Latter are characterized by the recirculation of the column effluent into the solution supply vessel that feeds the inflow. Depending on the experimental conditions, the solute concentration in the solution supply vessel and the effluent follows a damped sinusoidal oscillation. As a result, the closed-flow experiment provides additional observables in the breakthrough curve. The evaluation of these emergent features allows intrinsic control over boundary conditions and impacts the uncertainty of parameters in inverse modeling. We present a comprehensive sensitivity analysis to illustrate the potential application of closed-flow experiments. We show that the sensitivity with respect to the apparent dispersion can be controlled by the experimenter leading to a decrease in parameter uncertainty as compared to classical experiments by an order of magnitude for optimal settings. With these finding we are also able to reduce the equifinality found for situations, where rate-limited interactions impede a proper determination of the apparent dispersion and rate coefficients. Furthermore, we show the expected breakthrough curve for equilibrium and kinetic sorption, the latter showing strong similarities to the behavior found for completely mixed batch reactor experiments. This renders the closed-flow mode a useful complementary approach to classical column experiments.

Sandy soils have low water and nutrient retention capabilities so that zeolite soil amendments are used for high value land uses including turf and horticulture to reduce leaching losses of NH4+ fertilisers. MesoLite is a zeolitic material made by caustic treatment of kaolin at 80-95oC. It has a moderately low surface area (9-12m2/g) and very high cation exchange capacity (494 cmol(+)/kg). Laboratory column experiments showed that an addition of 0.4% MesoLite to a sandy soil greatly (90%) reduced leaching of added NH4+ compared to an unamended soil and MesoLite is 11 times more efficient in retaining NH4+ than natural zeolite. Furthermore, NH4+-MesoLite slowly releases NH4+ to soil solution and is likely to be an effective slow release fertiliser.

This paper shows initial results in deploying the biologically inspired Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping system, RatSLAM, in an outdoor environment. RatSLAM has been widely tested in indoor environments on the task of producing topologically coherent maps based on a fusion of odometric and visual information. This paper details the changes required to deploy RatSLAM on a small tractor equipped with odometry and an omnidirectional camera. The principal changes relate to the vision system, with others required for RatSLAM to use omnidirectional visual data. The initial results from mapping around a 500 m loop are promising, with many improvements still to be made.

Background It remains unclear over whether it is possible to develop an epidemic forecasting model for transmission of dengue fever in Queensland, Australia. Objectives To examine the potential impact of El Niño/Southern Oscillation on the transmission of dengue fever in Queensland, Australia and explore the possibility of developing a forecast model of dengue fever. Methods Data on the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), an indicator of El Niño/Southern Oscillation activity, were obtained from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Numbers of dengue fever cases notified and the numbers of postcode areas with dengue fever cases between January 1993 and December 2005 were obtained from the Queensland Health and relevant population data were obtained from the Australia Bureau of Statistics. A multivariate Seasonal Auto-regressive Integrated Moving Average model was developed and validated by dividing the data file into two datasets: the data from January 1993 to December 2003 were used to construct a model and those from January 2004 to December 2005 were used to validate it. Results A decrease in the average SOI (ie, warmer conditions) during the preceding 3–12 months was significantly associated with an increase in the monthly numbers of postcode areas with dengue fever cases (β=−0.038; p = 0.019). Predicted values from the Seasonal Auto-regressive Integrated Moving Average model were consistent with the observed values in the validation dataset (root-mean-square percentage error: 1.93%). Conclusions Climate variability is directly and/or indirectly associated with dengue transmission and the development of an SOI-based epidemic forecasting system is possible for dengue fever in Queensland, Australia.

Lawmakers are asking whether Australian researchers need an express 'experimental use' defense against patent infringement. The overriding policy for establishing a patent system is indisputably the promotion of innovation. According to traditional intellectual property pedagogy, the incentive to innovate flows from the reward afforded to the inventor. A balancing policy is that the patentee must fully disclose the invention to help minimize the risks of duplication and provides a basis for improvements by further research.Where there is uncertainty as to how these competing policy limbs are balanced and whether a patentee can exclude others from experimenting on a patented invention, the uncertain legal environment disadvantages both the patentee and researcher. Different jurisdictions have treated the experimental use question quite differently with varied results for the researcher. The biotechnology industry is evolving at an unprecedented pace and the law will as is always the case, lag behind in its usual cautious fashion. The Australian law may finally catch up to researchers' concerns.
