Apparitions of empire and imperial ideologies were deeply embedded in the International Exhibition, a distinct exhibitionary paradigm that came to prominence in the mid-nineteenth century. Exhibitions were platforms for the display of objects, the movement of people, and the dissemination of ideas across and between regions of the British Empire, thereby facilitating contact between its different cultures and societies. This thesis aims to disrupt a dominant understanding of International Exhibitions, which forwards the notion that all exhibitions, irrespective of when or where they were staged, upheld a singular imperial discourse (i.e. Greenhalgh 1988, Rydell 1984). Rather, this thesis suggests International Exhibitions responded to and reflected the unique social, political and economic circumstances in which they took place, functioning as cultural environments in which pressing concerns of the day were worked through. Understood thus, the International Exhibition becomes a space for self-presentation, serving as a stage from which a multitude of interests and identities were constructed, performed and projected. This thesis looks to the visual and material culture of the International Exhibition in order to uncover this more nuanced history, and foregrounds an analysis of the intersections between practices of exhibition-making and identity-making. The primary focus is a set of exhibitions held in Glasgow in the late-1880s and early-1900s, which extends the geographic and temporal boundaries of the existing scholarship. What is more, it looks at representations of Canada at these events, another party whose involvement in the International Exhibition tradition has gone largely unnoticed. Consequently, this thesis is a thematic investigation of the links between a municipality routinely deemed the ‘Second City of the Empire’ and a Dominion settler colony, two types of geographic setting rarely brought into dialogue. It analyses three key elements of the exhibition-making process, exploring how iconographies of ‘quasi-nationhood’ were expressed through an exhibition’s planning and negotiation, its architecture and its displays. This original research framework deliberately cuts across strata that continue to define conceptions of the British Empire, and pushes beyond a conceptual model defined by metropole and colony. Through examining International Exhibitions held in Glasgow in the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods, and visions of Canada in evidence at these events, the goal is to offer a novel intervention into the existing literature concerning the cultural history of empire, one that emphasises fluidity rather than fixity and which muddles the boundaries between centre and periphery.

The artwork describes web as a network environment and a space where people are connected and as a result, it can reshape you as an interactive participant who is able to regenerate an object as a new form through a truly collaborative and cooperative interactions with others. The artwork has been created based on the research findings of characteristic of web: 1) Participatory (Slater 2002, p.536), 2) Communicational (Rheingold 1993), 3) Connected (Jordan 1999, 80), and 4) Stylising (Jordan 1999, 69). The artwork has conceptualised and visualised those characteristics of web based on principles of graphic design and visual communication.

WHAT: An interactive installation with full body interface, digital projection, multi-touch sensitive screen surfaces, interactive 3D gaming software, motorised dioramas, 4.1 spatial sound & new furniture forms - investigating the cultural dimensions of sustainability through the lens of 'time'. “Time is change, time is finitude. Humans are a finite species. Every decision we make today brings that end closer, or alternatively pushes it further away. Nothing can be neutral”. Tony Fry DETAILS: Each participant/viewer lies comfortably on their back. Directly above them is a semi-transparent Perspex screen that displays projected 3D imagery and is simultaneously sensitive to the lightest of finger touches. Depending upon the ever changing qualities of the projected image on this screen the participant can see through its surface to a series of physical dioramas suspended above, lit by subtle LED spotlighting. This diorama consists of a slowly rotating series of physical environments, which also include several animatronic components, allowing the realtime composition of whimsical ‘landscapes’ of both 'real' and 'virtual' media. Through subtle, non-didactic touch-sensitive interactivity the participant then has influence over both the 3D graphic imagery, the physical movements of the diorama and the 4 channel immersive soundscape, creating an uncanny blend of physical and virtual media. Five speakers positioned around the room deliver a rich interactive soundscape that responds both audibly and physically to interactions.

Damage-induced anisotropy of quasi-brittle materials is investigated using component assembling model in this study. Damage-induced anisotropy is one significant character of quasi-brittle materials coupled with nonlinearity and strain softening. Formulation of such complicated phenomena is a difficult problem till now. The present model is based on the component assembling concept, where constitutive equations of materials are formed by means of assembling two kinds of components' response functions. These two kinds of components, orientational and volumetric ones, are abstracted based on pair-functional potentials and the Cauchy - Born rule. Moreover, macroscopic damage of quasi-brittle materials can be reflected by stiffness changing of orientational components, which represent grouped atomic bonds along discrete directions. Simultaneously, anisotropic characters are captured by the naturally directional property of the orientational component. Initial damage surface in the axial-shear stress space is calculated and analyzed. Furthermore, the anisotropic quasi-brittle damage behaviors of concrete under uniaxial, proportional, and nonproportional combined loading are analyzed to elucidate the utility and limitations of the present damage model. The numerical results show good agreement with the experimental data and predicted results of the classical anisotropic damage models.

The electric car, the all electric aircraft and requirements for renewable energy are prime examples of potential technologies needing to be addressed in the world problem of global warming/carbon emission etc. Power electronics are fundamental for the underpinning of these technologies and with the diverse requirements for electrical configurations and the range of environmental conditions, time to market is paramount for module manufacturers and systems designers alike. This paper presents a 'virtual' design methodology together with theoretical and experimental results that demonstrate enhanced product design with improved reliability, performance and cost value within competitive schemes.

Introdução: A compreensão do papel da intimidade no cuidar é uma questão essencial para o estabelecimento das competências relacionais no processo de cuidar o utente, visto que este se centra no desenvolvimento de relações interpessoais. Na formação dos estudantes de Enfermagem, visa-se o desenvolvimento de competências, assentes na compreensão da dimensão ética dos cuidados de forma a “promover o desenvolvimento ético, com respeito pela autonomia das pessoas, pressupõe prudência, reflexão crítica, consciência de cidadania e de responsabilidade” (Bettencourt, 2008: 61). Sendo assim, o modelo de formação em enfermagem deve assentar num processo reflexivo que proporcione aos estudantes a aquisição de posturas e condutas que lhe permitam a aquisição de competências profissionais. Objetivo: Compreender quais as variáveis que são preditoras do desenvolvimento das dimensões das competências relacionais na preservação da intimidade do utente. Metodologia: Estudo descritivo – correlacional de abordagem quantitativa. A população acessível, foram os estudantes da licenciatura em enfermagem de uma Escola Superior de Enfermagem integrada numa Universidade (A) e de uma Escola Superior de Saúde integrada num Instituto Politécnico (B). A amostra foi constituída por todos os estudantes de enfermagem das referidas escolas a partir do ano em que iniciam o primeiro ensino clínico. Os instrumentos de recolha de dados foram um questionário de caracterização dos estudantes e do contexto clínico e um Inventário de Competências Relacionais de Ajuda (ICRA). Os dados foram analisados com recurso ao Software IBM® SPSS® Statistic (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) de onde se fez uma análise dedutiva. Resultados: As variáveis independentes que melhor predizem a variável dependente (Competências relacionais) são a Escola seguida do ano e do acompanhamento em ensino clínico. Após a utilização dos métodos de seleção de preditores (seleção de Forward, seleção Backward e seleção Stepwise) as nossas variáveis independentes preditoras são o ano, a escola e o tipo de acompanhamento em EC, as restantes foram excluídas (sexo, idade, estado civil e habilitações literárias). Conclusões: As variáveis preditoras evidenciam a sua importância no desenvolvimento das competências relacionais dos estudantes de enfermagem, interferindo nos seus comportamentos enquanto estudantes e futuros enfermeiros. São variáveis que de uma ou de outra forma vão influenciar como é que cada estudante se vai comportar perante as situações de cuidado, onde se salientam nomeadamente o sexo e o ano do curso, variáveis que são intrínsecas a cada estudante, enquanto a Escola e o tipo de acompanhamento em EC são extrínsecas aos estudantes. Estas últimas são, portanto, as que consideramos que poderão ser alteradas em cada escola para que os estudantes adquiram e desenvolvam este domínio das competências de forma mais harmoniosa com o cuidar em enfermagem. E-poltergeist takes over the user’s internet browser, automatically initiating Web searches without their permission. Web-based artwork which explores issues of user control when confronted with complex technological systems, questioning the limits of digital interactive arts as consensual reciprocal systems. e-poltergeist was a major web commission that marked an early stage of research in a larger enquiry by Craighead and Thomson into the relationship between live virtual data, global communications networks and instruction-based art, exploring how such systems can be re-contextualised within gallery environments. e-poltergeist presented the 'viewer' with a singular narrative by using live internet search-engine data that aimed to create a perpetual and virtually unstoppable cycle of search engine results, banner ads and moving windows as an interruption into the normal use of an internet browser. The work also addressed the ‘de-personalisation’ of internet use by sending a series of messages from the live search engine data that seemed to address the user directly: 'Is anyone there?'; 'Can anyone hear me?', 'Please help me!'; 'Nobody cares!' e-poltergeist makes a significant contribution to the taxonomy of new media art by dealing with the way that new media art can re-address notions of existing traditions in art such as appropriation and manipulation, instruction-based art and conceptual art. e-poltergeist was commissioned ($12,000) for 010101: Art in Technological Times, a landmark international exhibition presented by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which bought together leading international practitioners working with emergent technologies, including Tatsuo Miyajima, Janet Cardiff, Brian Eno. In this paper, a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) video surveillance system is presented for collision avoidance of moving ships to bridge piers. An image pre-processing algorithm is proposed to reduce clutter noises by multi-scale fractal analysis, in which the blanket method is used for fractal feature computation. Then, the moving ship detection algorithm is developed from image differentials of the fractal feature in the region of surveillance between regularly interval frames. Experimental results have shown that the approach is feasible and effective. It has achieved real-time and reliable alert to avoid collisions of moving ships to bridge piers

Internal risk management models of the kind popularized by J. P. Morgan are now used widely by the world’s most sophisticated financial institutions as a means of measuring risk. Using the returns on three of the most popular futures contracts on the London International Financial Futures Exchange, in this paper we investigate the possibility of using multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) models for the calculation of minimum capital risk requirements (MCRRs). We propose a method for the estimation of the value at risk of a portfolio based on a multivariate GARCH model. We find that the consideration of the correlation between the contracts can lead to more accurate, and therefore more appropriate, MCRRs compared with the values obtained from a univariate approach to the problem.

This publication is a full colour bi-lingual catalogue for the exhibition Thin Place, curated by Ciara Healy for Oriel Myrddin. It includes artwork by five interdisciplinary artists based in West Wales, the West of Ireland and London. The exhibition, symposium and education programme, funded by the Arts Council of Wales aims to show how the fields of art, literature, science and theology are interconnected, especially when considering the nature of reality, the concept of an otherworld and the prospect of an afterlife. Included in the catalogue are texts especially commissioned for the exhibition by professionals who work in disciplines outside of the art world. It also includes an introductory essay by Ciara Healy.

Low socioeconomic factors may influence the development of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Thus far, there is little research available on SUI in developing countries. We aimed to determine whether the prevalence of SUI in a northeastern Brazilian municipality was higher or lower than in the general female population. Cross-sectional household cluster study of 1,180 climacteric women in the So Luis municipality (Maranho state, Brazil) was conducted using a standardized questionnaire that was previously tested in a pilot study and administered by interviewers to obtain socioeconomic and cultural information, climacteric aspects, and life habits related to SUI. From this population, 15.34% (n = 181) had SUI; this prevalence did not change with age. More than half (57.92%) of the patients replied that they had not consulted a physician for their SUI. The presence of SUI was not associated with any socioeconomic or gynecological variables after multivariate analysis. The prevalence of SUI in So Luis was similar to the rates observed in the general global female population. Socioeconomic and gynecological variables were not associated with SUI.
