This paper describes effective ways secondary school leaders can enact curriculum policy, particularly assessment practices, to support learning for students with disabilities in mainstream schools. Assessment for learning (AfL) as a pedagogic practice, has gained recent importance through inclusion in curriculum policy in Queensland, Australia. AfL is the frequent assessment of student progress that identifies learning needs and informs future teaching and learning. Assessment of student progress of the standards based curriculum has provided challenges for schools attempting to meet the needs of “all” learners. This paper highlights findings of a small case study to model successful leadership practices used in an inclusive secondary school to improve achievement of students with disabilities through assessment. Successful leadership practices that can be generalized to improve achievement of all learners include making sense of policy for staff; developing staff common and shared beliefs and actions; organizing professional learning opportunities and arranging collaborative curriculum planning and co-teaching.

This study aims to explore the perceptions of principals and teacher leaders regarding their roles and the interaction between these roles in Chinese urban primary schools at the time of unprecedented curriculum reform. This involves a complexity of factors such as the influence of globalisation, the impact of traditional Chinese cultural attitudes towards education through Confucianism, and the implementation requirements of the current education reforms. All of these wider contextual factors help to shape the leadership practices that are described in the study. A qualitative exploratory case study approach has been utilised to undertake this investigation. The conceptual framework for this study draws upon scholars‘ work from Western countries but has been adapted in order to address three research questions for the study‘s focus on the context in Shandong province, Mainland China. Three research questions were addressed: First, what are principals‘ perceptions of their leadership roles in Mainland China under current educational reform? Second, what are teacher leaders‘ perceptions of their leadership roles in Mainland China under current educational reform? And finally, what are principals‘ and teacher leaders‘ perceptions of how their roles interact? With reference to the principals in the study, the findings confirm Gurr‘s (2008) comprehensive leadership model relating to four roles, specifically, learning and teaching, symbolic and cultural awareness, future orientation, and accountability. Significantly, some sub-roles that emerge from the data are uniquely Chinese. For example, school culture construction is a very deliberate process in which principals and their staff talked openly about and were involved in creating a positive school climate comprising spiritual, material, and system dimensions. Another finding relates to school feature construction. This refers to the process that principals and staff used to make their schools distinctive and different from other schools and included such features as the school‘s philosophy and the school-based curriculum. In seeking to understand the nature of teacher leadership in Chinese primary schools, this research confirms some findings identified in Western literature. For instance, teacher leaders in Shandong province were involved in decision-making, working with parents and community members, undertaking and planning professional development for staff, and mediating between colleagues (Day & Harris, 2002; Harrison & Killion, 2007; Leithwood, Jantzi, & Steinbach, 1999; Muijs & Harris, 2006; Smylie, 1992). However, some new aspects, such as a heightened awareness of the importance of accountability, emerge from this study. The study‘s conceptual framework also draws upon some significant insights from micropolitics and, in particular, two core constructs, namely cooperation and conflict (Blase, 1991), to explore the interactions between principals and teacher leaders. In this study, principals and teacher leaders employed exchange and facilitation as two strategies in cooperative processes; and they adopted enforcement and compromise in conflictive processes. Finally, the study‘s findings indicate that principals and teacher leaders were developing new ways of interacting in response to the requirements of significant education reform. Most principals were exercising their power through (Blase, 1991) their teacher leaders who in turn, were working in alignment with their principals to achieve the desired outcomes in schools. It was significant that this form of 'parallel leadership' (Crowther, Ferguson, & Ham, 2009) characterised the teacher leadership roles at this period of change to the curriculum in Mainland China.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential and value of positive management practices to address the pain and suffering that frequently accompanies periods of large-scale austerity in public sectors. Public managers are increasingly asked to implement severe austerity measures and at the same time to build service delivery capacity; contradictory tasks. We draw on and further develop Cameron’s (2012) model of Positive Leadership to identify seven positive shared leadership practices that, while not eliminating the pain and suffering associated with austerity measures at least offer some scope, compared to traditional public management practices, for managing the austerity-build capacity duality in ways that respond to those affected with compassion and respect. We draw on published reports of a large-scale austerity program to highlight the potential and value of positive shared leadership practices for creating what we refer to as positive organisational austerity. The paper contributes to the literature on public management response to crises in two main ways. First, the paper introduces and develops the concept of shared positive leadership (Cameron, 2012; Carson et al. 2007) as a way of managing in austerity. Second, the paper introduces the concept of positive organisational austerity as a means of highlighting a reorientation in thinking about austerity measures and their implementation.

Student-centred schools focus on designing learning experiences that recognise and respond to the individual needs of each of their students. They encourage all members of their school community to be active learners, working to enhance the educational opportunities available at their school. This literature review seeks to address and explore the hypothesis that studentcentred schools make the difference. The review commences by defining the concept of student-centred schooling and the various learning and educational theories that underpin related research. The authors present a model comprising six core elements of learning environments that student-centred schools demonstrate, with a focus on leadership. They also link their findings to the five professional practices in AITSL’s Australian Professional Standard for Principals to illustrate how these leadership practices drive and sustain studentcentred schools. Drawing from Viviane Robinson’s work on the dimensions of student-centred school leadership, together with several further dimensions identified through an environmental scan of literature, the authors consider how and in what ways student-centred schools make the difference.

Design principles for learning spaces for 21st century learning emphasise flexibility and collaboration. Yet it is rare in Australian schools for school leaders to invite students and teachers to collaborate in the design process or to prepare them for the transition into innovative physical learning spaces that are often designed to challenge and change existing learning habits. This article presents a qualitative case study of how one primary school leader led a successful transition for a teacher and her students by inviting them to design their future physical learning space and reconstruct their pedagogic relationships. This article analyses her leadership practices drawing from literature in the learning space, student voice and leadership fields to consider the benefits and challenges experienced by the collaborators when making space to learn.

This project makes a contribution to knowledge about the successful leadership practices that enhance education for young people with a disability in a Queensland Secondary School. The project used a critical ethnographic approach with a variety of data collection methods and analysis. For example, the use of work diaries, semi-structured interviews, document analysis and observation. These leadership practices were found to be relevant to the development of inclusive schools for all learners.The most powerful leadership practices found were those used by the leader to challenge, interupt and replace exsisting discourse and processes that led to exclusion of students with a disability.

Teachers leave the teaching profession at different stages throughout their careers. When mid-career teachers leave the profession, there is a potential loss of experienced, quality staff. Increasingly principals have the responsibility for recruiting and keeping quality staff, which translates to responsibility for arresting the attrition rate. This paper reports on an ongoing study that investigates how school leadership may affect teacher job satisfaction in order to understand how principals can enhance teacher work commitment. This paper uses the domains of leadership identified in Education Queensland’s Leadership Matters Framework (2008) to compare school leaders’ and teachers’ perceptions about mid-career teachers’ leaving the profession. Five current principals and five ex-teachers participated in semi-structured, qualitative, individual interviews about which leadership practices impact on teacher work commitment. The ideas identified by each cohort were coded through a content analysis. The five domains of leadership (i.e., personal, relational, intellectual, organisational and educational leadership) provided an analytical framework. Both participant groups indicated relational leadership practices as the strongest influence on teacher work commitment. The relational skills, such as valuing staff, being approachable, being consistent with staff interactions, having good interpersonal skills and developing staff strengths, were noted to have specific impacts on teachers’ work commitment. There were significant differences between the groups, with the ex-teachers rating the personal leadership practices as the second most important practice that can influence teacher work commitment. In contrast, the principals felt that the organisational and education leadership practices were of next importance for teacher work commitment. The findings have implications for principal leadership professional learning. Improving relational skills may help school leaders to increase teacher work. Teacher attrition is a serious concern to many education jurisdictions and by understanding reasons for decline in commitment, jurisdictions can redress the negative impact of leadership practices and keep teachers committed and in the profession. However, further research needs to incorporate more participants through a quantitative study to validate connections with the qualitative findings presented in this current study.

Las convicciones espirituales pueden ayudar a los líderes de negocios a alcanzar sus objetivos en forma ecológica, pro-social y con respeto por las generaciones futuras. El artículo presenta casos de emprendedorismo guiado por la espiritualidad en Estados Unidos, Europa y la India y discute los cambios que se requieren para que las organizaciones se transformen en entidades sustentables.

Uno de los retos más complejos que enfrentan los líderes de las empresas es obtener resultados que las hagan perdurables a lo largo del tiempo. Usualmente, la innovación es vista como una estrategia para mejorar los resultados a corto plazo y el liderazgo como habilitador de su implementación. Sin embargo, la innovación también puede ser vista como parte central del sistema de negocio, y las prácticas del liderazgo como facilitadores que permitan mejorar los resultados no sólo a corto, sino también a mediano y largo plazo. Con base en lo anterior, se realizó un estudio de caso en la campaña de AmeriTel en Teleperformance Colombia para analizar la asociación que tiene el liderazgo y la innovación con sus resultados, y cómo esta relación se refleja en la perdurabilidad de la campaña. De acuerdo a los hallazgos de la investigación, se puede observar el desempeño de una campaña que está enfocada en resultados, en cómo cambia la perspectiva y efectividad de todo el personal, pasando de la innovación de un nuevo modelo de gestión visto como estrategia, al mismo modelo visto como innovación dentro del modelo de negocio, el círculo del cambio y la aplicación de un liderazgo efectivo.

Los estudios del liderazgo dentro de un contexto empresarial se han desarrollado para alcanzar la perdurabilidad empresarial, generar bienestar, lograr el éxito esperado, valorar el capital humano, los talentos y los recursos existentes, etc. Sin embargo, aún existen muchos aspectos que se deben analizar. Uno de ellos es entender los conceptos del optimismo, del tipo de liderazgo y las diferencias culturales de diversos países. Por otro lado, no hay evidencia precisa de la repercusión que tiene el tipo de liderazgo en los seguidores según la cultura presente, que permita comprender las relaciones existentes entre estas variables. Este texto que se presenta se basa en una revisión conceptual de los diferentes tipos de liderazgo; transaccional y transformacional, de la psicología positiva, del capital psicológico y del optimismo. Así mismo, presenta los diferentes estudios que se han realizado acerca de la relación que existe entre el liderazgo y el optimismo generado en los empleados para lograr mayores y mejores resultados, y una relación del liderazgo en diferentes culturas con poca distancia cultural frente a Colombia.

Pensar numa escola de todos e para todos é pensar e reconhecer a heterogeneidade dos alunos que a frequentam e responder a cada um deles segundo as suas necessidades. Assim, uma liderança forte é absolutamente vital para o desenvolvimento de ofertas educativas orientadas para a diversidade, incentivando todos os intervenientes a construir uma cultura de colaboração e reflexão. A escolha do problema a ser investigado, tendo como pergunta de partida, que práticas de liderança levar a cabo num projeto educativo para uma escola efetivamente inclusiva, surgiu da reflexão autobiográfica, das atuais funções da investigadora, enquanto elemento da Direção de uma escola, e da caracterização do agrupamento de escolas ao qual pertence. Com base na revisão de literatura, procurou-se clarificar e definir conceitos, aprofundar conhecimentos, de forma a reconhecer o que já foi feito, através de uma reflexão sobre o desenvolvimento do agrupamento em estudo, e propor ações/práticas de liderança a melhorar ou outras ainda não realizadas, com o objetivo que o mesmo seja efetivamente inclusivo.

As organizações estão conscientes que enfrentarão complexa mudança organizacional, pois as demandas individuais na participação das decisões têm alterado os papéis desempenhados pelos gestores e seus subordinados. Neste contexto, a comunicação torna-se essencial para o exercício da influência social, para a coordenação das atividades e para a efetivação da liderança. A literatura aponta que as atitudes e os comportamentos dos funcionários são regidos por uma distribuição justa das recompensas conforme às contribuições de cada um. Assim, satisfação e atitudes positivas podem ser alcançadas por meio de um ambiente organizacional com boa comunicação, autonomia, participação, justiça distributiva e confiança. Portanto, este trabalho teve o objetivo de identificar as dimensões de Liderança e Cultura Organizacional na Criminalística da Polícia Federal, suas relações com o Clima Organizacional e como estes construtos contribuem para explicação dos problemas gerenciais. Para a coleta dos dados, foi realizada uma pesquisa quantitativa composta de 4 questionários. Dos 722 formulários enviados, 150 (20,8 %) foram respondidos: 21 (14 %) por Peritos Criminais Federais (PCF) do órgão central, 126 (84 %) por PCF das descentralizadas e 3 (2 %) por PCF de outras unidades. Os entrevistados tinham de 30 a 64 anos de idade (μ = 40,9; dp = 6,8), de 1 a 32 anos de serviço público (μ = 12,6; dp = 6,5) e de 1 a 27 anos de nomeação (μ = 7,9; dp = 3,9), e a função de chefia foi exercida por 79 (52,7 %) respondentes. Os resultados revelaram que não há diferença nas percepções de Liderança, Cultura e Clima Organizacional entre as regiões do país, rejeitando a hipótese H6 deste trabalho. Em um estudo longitudinal entre 2011 e 2013 também não houve mudanças significativas na percepção de Liderança, mostrando consistência entre as populações. Além disso, os resultados mostraram que a idade, o tempo de trabalho e o tempo de nomeação não estão associados com o Clima, logo servidores de diferentes épocas têm a mesma percepção do clima da organização. Os modelos de equações estruturais demonstraram que a Liderança, as Práticas de Liderança e o Clima são explicados fortemente por suas dimensões, e que a Cultura Organizacional afeta a Liderança e as Práticas de Liderança porém, mais significativamente, o Clima Organizacional. Tais resultados corroboram a teoria e explicam hipóteses deste trabalho. Observou-se, também, que na organização há predomínio da subcultura burocrática, baseada em controle e poder, que impacta o Clima Organizacional e, frequentemente, resulta em menor comprometimento e desempenho do servidor. A pesquisa apontou que os líderes devem encorajar a comunicação aberta para alcançar o entendimento dialógico na organização. Os achados deste estudo podem fornecer à gestão uma visão melhor para gerir seus recursos com base na legitimidade, na referência, no conhecimento e na informação, obedecendo os pressupostos do discurso ideal habermasiano.

Esta investigação, de carácter quantitativo, pretende descrever e analisar as práticas e os comportamentos de liderança dos alunos da Universidade da Madeira. Na recolha de dados foi utilizado o Student Leadership Practices Inventory (SLPI), um instrumento de 30 itens, desenvolvido por Kouzes e Posner (2006b), que avalia as práticas de liderança em cinco domínios. O questionário foi administrado por correio electrónico, durante o mês de Fevereiro de 2009, a uma amostra aleatória que incluiu 208 indivíduos. Os dados recolhidos foram tratados e analisados com recurso ao software estatístico SPSS 16.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). A análise dos resultados indica que a prática de liderança utilizada pelo maior número de alunos da Universidade da Madeira é “habilitar a agir”. Verificou-se, ainda, que existem diferenças significativas entre os sexos nesta mesma prática de liderança, sendo os alunos do sexo feminino os que utilizam com maior frequência esta prática de liderança. Por outro lado, provou-se não existirem diferenças significativas na frequência de utilização das práticas “modelar caminho”, “inspirar uma visão partilhada”, “desafiar o processo” e “encorajar a vontade” quanto à idade, quanto ao exercício de uma actividade profissional e em relação ao facto do aluno estar ou não relacionado com uma organização.
