Zirconium oxide inclusion in Bi2212 superconducting tapes and bulks was studied as possible artificial pinning centers (APC). In order to analyze the zirconium oxide APC addition in Bi2212 samples, magnetization measurements were performed in bulks and transport properties measurements were performed on tapes. In magnetization measurements, the critical current densities are proportional to the width of the magnetization loop at each applied magnetic field. Addition of ZrO(2) in Bi2212 superconductors broadened the magnetization loop and enhanced the critical current densities at 4.2 K in bulks, as a clear indication that ZrO(2) addition improved the pinning and acted as APCs. In contrast, the transport critical current densities decreased in tapes.

Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been widely used in restorative surgery due to its high corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, some studies showed that V and Al release in the organism might induce cytotoxic effects and neurological disorders, which led to the development of V-free alloys and both V- and Al-free alloys containing Nb, Zr, Ta, or Mo. Among these alloys, Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy is promising due to its better biomechanical compatibility than Ti-6Al-4V. In this work, the corrosion behavior of Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-xNb-13Zr alloys (x=5, 13, and 20) was evaluated in Ringer`s solution (pH 7.5) at 37 degrees C through open-circuit potential measurements, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Spontaneous passivity was observed for all materials in this medium. Low corrosion current densities (in the order of 10(-7) A/cm(2)) and high impedance values (in the order of 10(5) Omega cm(2) at low frequencies) indicated their high corrosion resistance. EIS results showed that the passivating films were constituted of an outer porous layer (very low resistance) and an inner compact layer (high resistance), the latter providing the corrosion resistance of the materials. There was evidence that the Ti-xNb-13Zr alloys were more corrosion resistant than both Ti and Ti-6Al-4V in Ringer`s solution.

The alpha-conotoxins, a class of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) antagonists, are emerging as important probes of the role played by different nAChR subtypes in cell function and communication, In this study, the native alpha-conotoxins PnIA and PnIB were found to cause concentration-dependent inhibition of the ACh-induced current in all rat parasympathetic neurons examined, with IC50 values of 14 and 33 nM, and a maximal reduction in current amplitude of 87% and 71%, respectively. The modified alpha-conotoxin [N11S]PnIA reduced the ACh-induced current with an IC50 value of 375 nM and a maximally effective concentration caused 91% block, [A10L]PnIA was the most potent inhibitor, reducing the ACh-induced current in similar to 80% of neurons, with an IC50 value of 1.4 nM and 46% maximal block of the total current, The residual current was not inhibited further by alpha-bungarotoxin, but was further reduced by the cu-conotoxins PnIA or PnIB, and by mecamylamine. H-1 NMR studies indicate that PnIA, PnIB, and the analogues, [A10L]PnIA and [N11S]PnIA, have identical backbone structures. We propose that positions 10 and II of PnIA and PnIB influence potency and determine selectivity among alpha 7 and other nAChR subtypes, including alpha 3 beta 2 and alpha 3 beta 4, Four distinct components of the nicotinic ACh-induced current in mammalian parasympathetic neurons have been dissected with these conopeptides.

The electrocatalytic activity of Pt and RuO(2) mixed electrodes of different compositions towards methanol oxidation was investigated. The catalysts were prepared by thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors and characterized by energy dispersive X-ray, scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry. This preparation method allowed obtaining uniform films with controlled stoichiometry and high surface area. Cyclic voltammetry experiments in the presence of methanol showed that mixed electrodes decreased the potential peak of methanol oxidation by approximately 100 mV (RHE) when compared to the electrode containing only Pt. In addition, voltammetric experiments indicated that the Pt(0.6)Ru(0.4)O(y) electrode led to higher oxidation current densities at lower potentials. Chronoamperometry experiments confirmed the contribution of RuO(2) to the catalytic activity as well as the better performance of the Pt(0.6)Ru(0.4)O(y) electrode composition. Formic acid and CO(2) were identified as being the reaction products formed in the electrolysis performed at 400 and 600 mV. The relative formation of CO(2) was favored in the electrolysis performed at 400 mV (RHE) with the Pt(0.6)Ru(0.4)O(y) electrode. The presence of RuO(2) in Pt-Ru-based electrodes is important for improving the catalytic activity towards methanol electrooxidation. Moreover, the thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors seems to be a promising route for the production of catalysts applicable to DMFC. (C) 2009 International Association for Hydrogen Energy. We generalize a proposal for detecting single-phonon transitions in a single nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) to include the intrinsic anharmonicity of each mechanical oscillator. In this scheme two NEMS oscillators are coupled via a term quadratic in the amplitude of oscillation for each oscillator. One NEMS oscillator is driven and strongly damped and becomes a transducer for phonon number in the other measured oscillator. We derive the conditions for this measurement scheme to be quantum limited and find a condition on the size of the anharmonicity. We also derive the relation between the phase diffusion back-action noise due to number measurement and the localization time for the measured system to enter a phonon-number eigenstate. We relate both these time scales to the strength of the measured signal, which is an induced current proportional to the position of the read-out oscillator.

A scheme is presented to incorporate a mixed potential integral equation (MPIE) using Michalski's formulation C with the method of moments (MoM) for analyzing the scattering of a plane wave from conducting planar objects buried in a dielectric half-space. The robust complex image method with a two-level approximation is used for the calculation of the Green's functions for the half-space. To further speed up the computation, an interpolation technique for filling the matrix is employed. While the induced current distributions on the object's surface are obtained in the frequency domain, the corresponding time domain responses are calculated via the inverse fast Fourier transform (FFT), The complex natural resonances of targets are then extracted from the late time response using the generalized pencil-of-function (GPOF) method. We investigate the pole trajectories as we vary the distance between strips and the depth and orientation of single, buried strips, The variation from the pole position of a single strip in a homogeneous dielectric medium was only a few percent for most of these parameter variations.

1. An ATP-sensitive K+ (K-ATP) conductance has been identified using the perforated patch recording configuration in a population (52%) of dissociated neurones from adult rat intracardiac ganglia. The presence of the sulphonylurea receptor in approximately half of the intracardiac neurones was confirmed by labelling with fluorescent glibenclamide-BODIPY. 2. Under current clamp conditions in physiological solutions, leveromakalim (10 muM) evoked a hyperpolarization, which was inhibited by the sulphonylurea drugs glibenclamide and tolbutamide. 3. Under voltage clamp conditions in symmetrical (140 mM) K+ solutions, hath application of levcromakalim evoked an inward current with a density of similar to8 pA pF(-1) at -50 mV and a slope conductance of similar to9 nS, which reversed close to the potassium equilibrium potential (E-K). Cell dialysis with an ATP-free intracellular solution also evoked an inward current, which was inhibited by tolbutamide. 4. Bath application of either glibenclamide (10 muM) or tolbutamide (100 muM) depolarized adult intracardiac neurones by 3-5 mV, suggesting that a K-ATP conductance is activated under resting conditions and contributes to the resting membrane potential. 5. Activation of a membrane current by levcromakalim leas concentration dependent, with an EC50 of 1.6 muM. Inhibition of the levcromakalim-activated current by glibenclamide leas also concentration dependent, with an IC50 of 55 nM. 6. Metabolic inhibition with 2,4-dinitrophenol and iodoacetic acid or superfusion with hypoxic solution (P-O2 similar to 16 mmHg) also activated a membrane current. These currents exhibited similar I-P characteristics to the levcroinakalim-induced current and were inhibited by glibenclamide. 7. Activation of K-ATP channels in mammalian intracardiac neurones may contribute to changes in neural regulation of the mature heart and. cardiac function during ischaemia-reperfusion.

1. The relative permeability of the native P2X receptor channel to monovalent and divalent inorganic and organic cations was determined from reversal potential measurements of ATP-evoked currents in parasympathetic neurones dissociated from rat submandibular ganglia using the dialysed whole-cell patch clamp technique. 2. The P2X receptor-channel exhibited weak selectivity among the alkali metals with a selectivity sequence of Na+ > Li+ > Cs+ > Rb+ > K+, and permeability ratios relative to Cs+ (P-X/P-Cs) ranging from 1. 11 to 0.86. 3. The selectivity for the divalent alkaline earth cations was also weak with the sequence Ca2+ > Sr2+ > Ba2+ > Mn2+ > Mg2+. ATP-evoked currents were strongly inhibited when the extracellular divalent cation concentration was increased. 4, The calculated permeability ratios of different ammonium cations are higher than those of the alkali metal cations. The permeability sequence obtained for the saturated organic cations is inversely correlated with the size of the cation. The unsaturated organic cations have a higher permeability than that predicted by molecular size. 5. Acidification to pH 6.2 increased the ATP-induced current amplitude twofold, whereas alkalization to 8.2 and 9.2 markedly reduced current amplitude. Cell dialysis with either anti-P2X(2) and/or anti-P2X(4) but not anti-P2X(1) antibodies attenuated the ATP-evoked current amplitude. Taken together, these data are consistent with homomeric and/or heteromeric P2X(2) and P2X(4) receptor subtypes expressed in rat submandibular neurones. 6. The permeability ratios for the series of monovalent organic cations, with the exception of unsaturated cations, were approximately related to the ionic size. The relative permeabilities of the monovalent inoganic and organic cations tested are similar to those reported previously for cloned rat P2X2 receptors expressed in mammalian cells.

A method is presented for calculating the currents and winding patterns required to design independent zonal and tesseral shim coils for magnetic resonance imaging. Both actively shielded and unshielded configurations are considered, and the region of interest can be located asymmetrically with respect to the coil's length. Streamline, target-field and Fourier-series methods are utilized. The desired target-field is specified at two cylindrical radii, on and inside a circular conducting cylinder of length 2L and radius a. The specification is over some asymmetric portion pL < z < qL of the coil's length (-1 < p < q < 1). Arbitrary functions are used in the outer sections, -L < z < pL and qL < z < L, to ensure continuity of the magnetic field across the entire length of the coil. The entire field is then periodically extended as a half-range cosine Fourier series about either end of the coil. The resultant Fourier coefficients are then substituted into the Fourier-series expressions for the internal and external magnetic fields, and current densities and stream functions on both the primary coil and shield. A contour plot of the stream function directly gives the required coil winding patterns. Spherical harmonic analysis and shielding analysis on field calculations from a ZX shim coil indicate that example designs and theory are well matched.

This work presents preliminary results in the study of a novel structure for a laser scanned photodiode (LSP) type of image sensor. In order to increase the signal output, a stacked p-i-n-p-i-n structure with an intermediate light-blocking layer is used. The image and the scanning beam are incident through opposite sides of the sensor and their absorption is kept in separate junctions by an intermediate light-blocking layer. As in the usual LSP structure the scanning beam-induced photocurrent is dependent on the local illumination conditions of the image. The main difference between the two structures arises from the fact that in this new structure the image and the scanner have different optical paths leading to an increase in the photocurrent when the scanning beam is incident on a region illuminated on the image side of the sensor, while a decreasing in the photocurrent was observed in the single junction LSP. The results show that the structure can be successfully used as an image sensor even though some optimization is needed to enhance the performance of the device.

Following work on tantalum and chromium implanted flat M50 steel substrates, this work reports on the electrochemical behaviour of M50 steel implanted with tantalum and chromium and the effect of the angle of incidence. Proposed optimum doses for resistance to chloride attack were based on the interpretation of results obtained during long-term and accelerated electrochemical testing. After dose optimization from the corrosion viewpoint, substrates were implanted at different angles of incidence (15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, 90°) and their susceptibility to localized corrosion assessed using open-circuit measurements, step by step polarization and cyclic voltammetry at several scan rates (5–50 mV s-1). Results showed, for tantalum implanted samples, an ennoblement of the pitting potential of approximately 0.5 V for an angle of incidence of 90°. A retained dose of 5 × 1016 atoms cm-2 was found by depth profiling with Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The retained dose decreases rapidly with angle of incidence. The breakdown potential varies roughly linearly with the angle of incidence up to 30° falling fast to reach -0.1 V (vs. a saturated calomel electrode (SCE)) for 15°. Chromium was found to behave differently. Maximum corrosion resistance was found for angles of 45°–60° according to current densities and breakdown potentials. Cr+ depth profiles ((p,γ) resonance broadening method), showed that retained doses up to an angle of 60° did not change much from the implanted dose at 90°, 2 × 1017 Cr atoms cm-2. The retained implantation dose for tantalum and chromium was found to follow a (cos θ)8/3 dependence where θ is the angle between the sample normal and the beam direction.

Copper iron (Cu-Fe) 3D porous foams for supercapacitor electrodes were electrodeposited in the cathodic regime, on stainless steel current collectors, using hydrogen bubbling dynamic template. The foams were prepared at different current densities and deposition times. The foams were submitted to thermal conditioning at temperatures of 150 and 250 degrees C. The morphology, composition and structure of the formed films were studied by SEM, EDS and XRD, respectively. The electrochemical behaviour was studied by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronopotentiometry. The morphology of the 3D Cu-Fe foams is sensitive to the electrodeposition current and time. The increase of the current density produces a denser, larger and more ramified dendritic structure. Thermal conditioning at high temperature induces a coarser grain structure and the formation of copper oxides, which affect the electrochemical behaviour. The electrochemical response reveals the presence of various redox peaks assigned to the oxidation and reduction of Cu and Fe oxides and hydroxides in the foams. The specific capacitance of the 3D Cu Fe foams was significantly enhanced by thermal conditioning at 150 degrees C. The highest specific capacitance values attained 297 Fg(-1) which are much above the ones typically observed for single Cu or Fe Oxides and hydroxides. These values highlight a synergistic behaviour resulting from the combination of Cu and Fe in the form of nanostructured metallic foams. Moreover, the capacitance retention observed in an 8000 charge/discharge cycling test was above 66%, stating the good performance of these materials and its enhanced electrochemical response as supercapacitor negative electrodes. Current models of brain organization include multisensory interactions at early processing stages and within low-level, including primary, cortices. Embracing this model with regard to auditory-visual (AV) interactions in humans remains problematic. Controversy surrounds the application of an additive model to the analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs), and conventional ERP analysis methods have yielded discordant latencies of effects and permitted limited neurophysiologic interpretability. While hemodynamic imaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation studies provide general support for the above model, the precise timing, superadditive/subadditive directionality, topographic stability, and sources remain unresolved. We recorded ERPs in humans to attended, but task-irrelevant stimuli that did not require an overt motor response, thereby circumventing paradigmatic caveats. We applied novel ERP signal analysis methods to provide details concerning the likely bases of AV interactions. First, nonlinear interactions occur at 60-95 ms after stimulus and are the consequence of topographic, rather than pure strength, modulations in the ERP. AV stimuli engage distinct configurations of intracranial generators, rather than simply modulating the amplitude of unisensory responses. Second, source estimations (and statistical analyses thereof) identified primary visual, primary auditory, and posterior superior temporal regions as mediating these effects. Finally, scalar values of current densities in all of these regions exhibited functionally coupled, subadditive nonlinear effects, a pattern increasingly consistent with the mounting evidence in nonhuman primates. In these ways, we demonstrate how neurophysiologic bases of multisensory interactions can be noninvasively identified in humans, allowing for a synthesis across imaging methods on the one hand and species on the other.

Cardiac L-type Ca (CaV1.2) channels are composed of a pore forming CaV1.2-α1 subunit and auxiliary β- and α2δ-subunits. β-subunits are important not only for surface expression of the channel pore but also for modulation of channel gating properties. Different β-subunits differentially modulate channel activity (Hullin et al., PLOSone, 2007) and thus L-type Ca2+ channel gating is altered when β-subunit expression pattern is changed. In human heart failure increased activity of single ventricular L-type Ca2+-channels is associated with an increased expression of β2-subunits. Interestingly, induction of β2-subunit over-expression in hearts of transgenic mice resembled this heart failure phenotype of hyperactive single L-type Ca2+-channel channels (Beetz et al., Cardiovasc Res. 2009). We hypothesised that competition of less stimulating β-subunits (e.g. β1) with β-subunits causing strong channel stimulation (e.g. β2) might be a means to treat dysfunctional L-type Ca2+-channel activity. To test this hypothesis, we performed whole-cell and single-channel measurements employing recombinant CaV1.2 channels expressed in HEK293 cells together with both β- and β1a2b-subunits. Whole-cell analysis revealed no differences of maximum L-type Ca2+-current densities [pA/pF] with coexpression of either β1a-subunits (-52±3.8), β2b-subunits (-61.5±6.6) or the mixtures of β- and β1a2b-subunits with the plasmid transfection ratio of 2:1 (-60.2±1.6) and 1:1 (-56.7±2.6) respectively. However, steady state inactivation kinetics differed between particular β-subunit and the relative amount of β-subunit presence in the mixtures (β1a1a-subunit (-41.1±1.0), β2b-subunits (-35.1±1.1), mixture 2:1 (-40.3±1.5), and mixture 1:1 (-38.4±2.0); [mV]; p<0.05, students t-test). Using a novel single-channel analysis, switching of gating between β1-like and β2-like modes was monitored on a minute time-scale when both β-subunits were co-expressed in the same cells, but the larger amount of β1a-subunits is required for the effective switching of gating. Our results indicate a model of mutually exclusive binding and effective competition between several β-subunits suggesting that hyperactive channel gating mediated e.g. by β2-subunits can be normalized by β1-subunits. Therefore, competitive replacement between different L-type Ca2+-channel β-subunits might serve as a novel therapeutic strategy for e.g. heart failure.
