Aporte a la toma de decisiones Del Instituto de Ortopedia Infantil Roosevelt a partir del análisis estructural del sector estratégico de hospitales universitarios

El concepto de hospitales universitarios ha ido evolucionando en el mundo, siendo cada vez más estricta la legislación que los regula y los mecanismos de evaluación para asegurar la calidad de la educación a los estudiantes que realizan prácticas en ambientes hospitalarios. El direccionamiento estratégico de los hospitales universitarios requiere en primer lugar de un análisis específico del sector, mediante pruebas como el análisis de hacinamiento, levantamiento del panorama competitivo, el análisis estructural de las fuerzas de mercado y un estudio de competidores que permitan el diagnóstico del sector estratégico. Por otro lado la realización de un modelo matricial aportará a la planificación estratégica mediante la integración del análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo. La presente investigación busca analizar el sector estratégico de hospitales universitarios y de manera particular la situación del Instituto de Ortopedia Infantil Roosevelt como integrante del sector. En primer lugar se realizó una investigación del concepto de hospitales universitarios en el tiempo, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional y de la legislación existente. Posteriormente se identificaron las instituciones que constituyen el sector estratégico y se realizó el análisis del medioambiente empresarial para la identificación de la situación real del sector y un análisis particular del área de educación e investigación del Instituto de Ortopedia Infantil Roosevelt, para construir las estrategias y el horizonte institucional.

Firefly “femmes fatales” acquire defensive steroids (lucibufagins) from their firefly prey

Female fireflies of the genus Photuris, the so-called firefly “femmes fatales,” prey on male fireflies of the genus Photinus. The females are able to entrap the males by faking the flash signal characteristics of the Photinus female. We found that by feeding on Photinus males, Photuris females gain more than nutrients. They also acquire defensive steroidal pyrones called lucibufagins, which are contained in Photinus but which Photuris fireflies are unable to produce on their own. Photuris females that eat Photinus males or lucibufagin are rejected by Phidippus jumping spiders. Lucibufagin itself proved to be a deterrent to such spiders. Field-collected Photuris females contain lucibufagin in varying amounts. The more lucibufagin they contain the more unacceptable they are to Phidippus.

AIS is an oncogene amplified in squamous cell carcinoma

We and others recently isolated a human p53 homologue (p40/p51/p63/p73L) and localized the gene to the distal long arm of chromosome 3. Here we sought to examine the role of p40/p73L, two variants lacking the N-terminal transactivation domain, in cancer. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis revealed frequent amplification of this gene locus in primary squamous cell carcinoma of the lung and head and neck cancer cell lines. (We named this locus AIS for amplified in squamous cell carcinoma.) Furthermore, amplification of the AIS locus was accompanied by RNA and protein overexpression of a variant p68AIS lacking the terminal transactivation domain. Protein overexpression in primary lung tumors was limited to squamous cell carcinoma and tumors known to harbor a high frequency of p53 mutations. Overexpression of p40AIS in Rat 1a cells led to an increase in soft agar growth and tumor size in mice. Our results support the idea that AIS plays an oncogenic role in human cancer.

The adenomatous polyposis coli-binding protein EB1 is associated with cytoplasmic and spindle microtubules

The evolutionarily conserved protein EB1 originally was identified by its physical association with the carboxyl-terminal portion of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumor suppressor protein, an APC domain commonly mutated in familial and sporadic forms of colorectal neoplasia. The subcellular localization of EB1 in epithelial cells was studied by using immunofluorescence and biochemical techniques. EB1 colocalized both to cytoplasmic microtubules in interphase cells and to spindle microtubules during mitosis, with pronounced centrosome staining. The cytoskeletal array detected by anti-EB1 antibody was abolished by incubation of the cells with nocodazole, an agent that disrupts microtubules; upon drug removal, EB1 localized to the microtubule-organizing center. Immunofluorescence analysis of SW480, a colon cancer cell line that expresses only carboxyl-terminal-deleted APC unable to interact with EB1, demonstrated that EB1 remained localized to the microtubule cytoskeleton, suggesting that this pattern of subcellular distribution is not mediated by its interaction with APC. In vitro cosedimentation with taxol-stabilized microtubules demonstrated that a significant fraction of EB1 associated with microtubules. Recent studies of the yeast EB1 homologues Mal3 and Bim1p have demonstrated that both proteins localize to microtubules and are important in vivo for microtubule function. Our results demonstrate that EB1 is a novel component of the microtubule cytoskeleton in mammalian cells. Associating with the mitotic apparatus, EB1 may play a physiologic role connecting APC to cellular division, coordinating the control of normal growth and differentiation processes in the colonic epithelium.

The Mouse Gene Expression Database (GXD)

The Gene Expression Database (GXD) is a community resource of gene expression information for the laboratory mouse. By combining the different types of expression data, GXD aims to provide increasingly complete information about the expression profiles of genes in different mouse strains and mutants, thus enabling valuable insights into the molecular networks that underlie normal development and disease. GXD is integrated with the Mouse Genome Database (MGD). Extensive interconnections with sequence databases and with databases from other species, and the development and use of shared controlled vocabularies extend GXD’s utility for the analysis of gene expression information. Deposition of Abraham Hill against Nathan Prince, Nov. 1, 1740

Abraham Hill (A.B. 1737) claimed that Prince had come to his College chamber "smoaking a pipe of Tobacco" the previous summer and asked numerous unusual questions. Hill also testified that Prince had accused fellow Tutor Daniel Rogers of being someone who "never did know what a scholar was" and Tutor Henry Flynt of having been "superannuated long ago." This deposition was attested by Justice of the Peace Trowbridge.

Student mathematical notebook of Ebenezer Hill, 1785

This mathematical notebook of Ebenezer Hill was kept in 1795 while he was a student at Harvard College. The volume contains rules, definitions, problems, drawings, and tables on arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, surveying, calculating distances, and dialing.
