A new method was used to prepare erbium-doped high silica (SiO2% > 96%) glasses by sintering nanoporous glasses. The concentration of erbium ions in high silica glasses can be considerably more than that in silica glasses prepared by using conventional methods. The fluorescence of 1532 nm has an FWHM (Full Wave at Half Maximum) of 50 nm, wider than 35 nm of EDSFA (erbium-doped silica fiber amplifer), and hence the glass possesses potential application in broadband fiber amplifiers. The Judd-Ofelt theoretical analysis reflects that the quantum efficiency of this erbium-doped glass is about 0.78, although the erbium concentration in this glass (6 x 103) is about twenty times higher than that in silica glass. These excellent characteristics of Er-doped high silica glass will be conducive to its usage in optical amplifiers and microchip lasers.

Erbium-doped silica glasses were made by sol-gel process. Intensive photoluminescence (PL) spectra from the Er-doped silica glasses at room temperature were measured. A broadband peak at 1535 ma, corresponding to the I-4(13/2)-I-4(15/2) transition, its full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 10 nm, and a shoulder at 1546 nm in the PL spectra were observed. At lower temperatures, main line of 1535 nm and another line of 1552 Mn instead of 1546 nm appear. So two types of luminescence centers must exist in the samples at different temperature. The intensity of main line does not decrease obviously with increasing temperature. By varying the Er ion concentration in the range of 0.2 wt% - 5wt%, the highest photoluminescence intensity was obtained at 0.2wt% erbium doped concentration. Luminescence intensity decreases with increasing erbium concentration. Cooperative upconversion was used to explain the concentration quenching of luminescence from silica glass with high erbium concentration. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements were carried out. It was found that the majority of the erbium impurities in the glasses have a local structure of eight first neighbor oxygen atoms at a mean distance of 0.255 nm, which is consistent with the typical coordination structure of rare earth ion.

This work presents the optical properties of erbium-doped and erbium/ytterbium codoped Na(2)O-Al(2)O(3)-TiO(2)-Nb(2)O(5)-P(2)O(5) glass systems and also the characterization of planar waveguides obtained by typical thermally assisted Ag+<-> Na+ ion-exchange process. The glass systems allow the preparation of single mode and multimode planar waveguides presenting a strong and relatively broad emission at 1536 nm. The emission signal in the infrared region is intensified for silver-containing samples when compared with free-silver samples. The emission signal intensification may be attributed to a nonplasmonic energy transfer from silver species to Er3+ ions as no bands related to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of silver nanoparticles were observed.

Temperature investigation of infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion in erbium-doped tellurite glasses excited by CW laser radiation at 1540 nm and under cryogenic temperatures is reported. Intense upconversion emission signals around 530, 550 and 660 nm corresponding to the H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2), and F-4(9/2) transitions to the I-4(15/2) ground state were generated and studied as a function of the laser intensity and temperature. The upconversion excitation mechanism of the Er3+ ions emitting energy levels was accomplished via stepwise multiphoton absorption. The green upconversion luminescence exhibited a fivefold intensity enhancement when the temperature of the sample was varied in the range between 5 and 300 K. A maximum green upconversion intensity was attained around 120 K and a steady decreasing behavior for higher temperatures up to 300 K was observed. A model based upon conventional rate equations was used to model the observed temperature evolution of the upconversion luminescence. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the observation of negative nonlinear absorption in fluoroindate glasses doped with erbium ions. The pumping wavelength is 800 nm which is doubly resonant with Er3+ ions transitions. A large nonlinear intensity dependence of the optical transmittance and strong upconverted fluorescence are obtained. The dependence of the upconverted fluorescence intensity with the laser power is described by a system of coupled-rate equations for the energy levels' populations. A simulation of erbium-doped glass systems, which provides population density for the excited states involved in the 1.5 mu m and also for 2.7 mu m emissions when pumped around 980 nm, is presented. To describe the diode pump laser processes, a theoretical model based in a coupled system of differential rate equations was developed. The approach used and the obtained spectroscopic parameters are discussed. The materials under study are two oxide glasses, lead fluoroborate (PbO-PbF2-B2O3), and heavy metal oxide (Bi2O3 PbO-Ga2O3) and a fluoride glass (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF), all of them doped with Er3+. Non-linear absorption is observed in Er3+-doped fluoroindate glass (in mol% 37InF2:20ZnF2:20SrF2:16BaF2:2GdF2: 2NaF:1GaF3:2ErF3) when the sample is irradiated with a CW laser emitting at 650 nm. An intensity dependence of the optical transmittance is detected. Saturation and sequential absorption of two photons are responsible for the decrease of 50% in the transmittance. The results are explained by simple models which are solved based on rate-equations for the populations of energy levels.

Energy transfer processes between Er3+ and Tm3+ were investigated examining the frequency upconversion emissions in a fluoroindate glass pumped at 790 nm. A 60-fold enhancement in the emission at ≈670 nm originating from Er3+ was observed when Tm3+ at concentration of 2% was introduced in a sample containing 2% of Er3+. The results are explained considering the influence of cross-relaxation processes between the active ions. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Erbium Er3+ and ytterbium Yb3+ codoped fluoro-phosphate glasses belonging to the system NaPO3-YF 3-BaF2-CaF2 have been prepared by the classical melt-quenching technique. Glasses containing up to 10 wt% of erbium and ytterbium fluorides have been obtained and characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and UV-visible and near-infrared spectroscopy. Transparent and homogeneous glass-ceramics have been then reproducibly synthetized by appropriate heat treatment above glass transition temperature of a selected parent glass. Structural investigations of the crystallization performed through X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have evidenced the formation of fluorite-type cubic crystals based during the devitrification process. Finally, infrared to visible up-conversion emission upon excitation at 975 nm has been studied on the Er3+ and Yb 3+ codoped glass-ceramics as a function of thermal treatment time. A large enhancement of intensity of the up-conversion emissions-about 150 times- has been observed in the glass-ceramics if compared to the parent glass one, suggesting an incorporation of the rare-earth ions (REI) into the crystalline phase. © 2012 The American Ceramic Society.

Erbium doped tellurite glasses (TeO2 + Li2O + TiO2) were prepared by conventional melt-quenching method to study the influence of the Er3+ concentration on the luminescence quantum efficiency (η) at 1.5 μm. Absorption and luminescence data were used to characterize the samples, and the η parameter was measured using the well-known thermal lens spectroscopy. For low Er3+ concentration, the measured values are around 76%, and the concentration behavior of η shows Er-Er and Er-OH- interactions, which agreed with the measured lifetime values. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. We have fabricated a neodymium-doped phosphate glass fiber with a silica cladding and used it to form a fiber laser. Phosphate and silicate glasses have considerably different glass transition temperatures and softening points making it hard to draw a fiber from these two glasses. A bulk phosphate glass of composition (Nd2O3)(0.011)(La2O3)(0.259)(P2O5)(0.725)(Al2O3)(0.005) was prepared and the resultant material was transparent, free from bubbles and visibly homogeneous. The bulk phosphate glass was drawn to a fiber while being jacketed with silica and the resultant structure was of good optical quality, free from air bubbles and major defects. The attenuation at a wavelength of 1.06 mu m was 0.05 dB/cm and the refractive index of the core and cladding at the pump wavelength of 488 nm was 1.56 and 1.46, respectively. The fibers were mechanically strong enough to allow for ease of handling and could be spliced to conventional silica fiber. The fibers were used to demonstrate lasing at the F-4(3/2) - I-4(11/2) (1.06 mu m) transition. Our work demonstrates the potential to form silica clad optical fibers with phosphate cores doped with very high levels of rare-earth ions (27-mol % rare-earth oxide).
