ABSTRACTThis paper reports an empirical case study on the interface between microfinance and climate change actions. Climate change, which until recently seemed a luxury for the microfinance sector, now appears to be crucial for its future. For their low adaptive capacity, the millions of microfinance clients worldwide happen to be the most vulnerable to a changing climate. However, such an arena is still blurred from an academic viewpoint, and inexistent among Brazilian academia. Therefore, by investigating Brazil’s largest rural MFI, Agroamigo, we aim at providing an empirical contribution to green microfinance. The main conclusion is that, albeit Agroamigo offers important links to climate change initiatives, it will need to take better account of specific vulnerabilities and risks to protect its portfolio and clients better from climate change impacts.

Objetivo – O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar e medir os determinantes da e-lealdade de um cliente no comércio eletrónico em Portugal. Metodologia – Foi realizado um estudo quantitativo empírico confirmatório e explicativo, a partir da identificação de um modelo teórico, suportado pelo levantamento bibliográfico sobre variáveis latentes, suscetível de investigar as relações entre os determinantes da e-lealdade. Os dados foram recolhidos através de um instrumento de medida, disponível online, o qual, permitiu obter uma amostra válida de 394 respondentes. As hipóteses foram testadas através de um modelo de equações estruturais. Resultados e conclusões – Estudaram-se e comprovaram-se a maioria das relações previstas e hipóteses, nomeadamente, a relação positiva das várias dimensões da e-confiança, e-satisfação e da e-qualidade de serviço na e-lealdade. A e-satisfação e a e-qualidade de serviço apresentam, também, um contributo interessante para a e-confiança que os consumidores têm nos produtos/serviços online. Quanto à e-satisfação dos consumidores foi possível verificar que a mesma apresenta uma variação, de acordo com a e-qualidade de serviço e a e-confiança, por parte dos consumidores online. Foi cumprida a validade convergente e discriminante das escalas de medida e a boa qualidade psicométrica das variáveis. Estas evidenciaram bons níveis de correlação e capacidades preditivas. Limitações/implicações – Os resultados obtidos precisam ser analisados com toda a precaução, não podendo ser objeto de generalizações, face ao uso de uma amostra de conveniência. O facto de os inquiridos avaliarem um website que estão já familiarizados pode constituir uma outra limitação. A ausência de estudos nacionais homólogos teve algumas implicações na discussão dos resultados. Originalidade/valor – O principal contributo deste estudo é constituir o primeiro realizado em Portugal, à data, onde se investigou e estimou um modelo proposto sobre os determinantes e antecedentes da e-lealdade no comércio eletrónico.

Self-consciousness has mostly been approached by philosophical enquiry and not by empirical neuroscientific study, leading to an overabundance of diverging theories and an absence of data-driven theories. Using robotic technology, we achieved specific bodily conflicts and induced predictable changes in a fundamental aspect of self-consciousness by altering where healthy subjects experienced themselves to be (self-location). Functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed that temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) activity reflected experimental changes in self-location that also depended on the first-person perspective due to visuo-tactile and visuo-vestibular conflicts. Moreover, in a large lesion analysis study of neurological patients with a well-defined state of abnormal self-location, brain damage was also localized at TPJ, providing causal evidence that TPJ encodes self-location. Our findings reveal that multisensory integration at the TPJ reflects one of the most fundamental subjective feelings of humans: the feeling of being an entity localized at a position in space and perceiving the world from this position and perspective.

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the possibilities and challenges of Community Development Banks (CDBs) as an innovative method of socioeconomic management of microcredit for poor populations. To this end, we will discuss the case of Banco Palmas in Conjunto Palmeiras in the city of Fortaleza, in the northeastern state of Ceará, as an empirical case study. The analyses presented here are based on information obtained from Banco Palmas between late 2011 and early 2012. In addition, previous studies by other researchers on the bank and other studies on CDBs were important. The primary data collected at Banco Palmas came from documents made available by the bank, such as reports and mappings. The analyses describe some of the characteristics of the granting of microcredit and allow one to situate it in the universe of microfinance and solidarity finance. They also show the significant growth of local consumption, mostly through the use of the Palmas social currency. The Banco Palmas experience, aside from influencing national public policies of solidarity finance, initiated a CDBs network that encourages the replication of these experiences throughout the country.

Two important challenges that teachers are currently facing are the sharing and the collaborative authoring of their learning design solutions, such as didactical units and learning materials. On the one hand, there are tools that can be used for the creation of design solutions and only some of them facilitate the co-edition. However, they do not incorporate mechanisms that support the sharing of the designs between teachers. On the other hand, there are tools that serve as repositories of educational resources but they do not enable the authoring of the designs. In this paper we present LdShake, a web tool whose novelty is focused on the combined support for the social sharing and co-edition of learning design solutions within communities of teachers. Teachers can create and share learning designs with other teachers using different access rights so that they can read, comment or co-edit the designs. Therefore, each design solution is associated to a group of teachers able to work on its definition, and another group that can only see the design. The tool is generic in that it allows the creation of designs based on any pedagogical approach. However, it can be particularized in instances providing pre-formatted designs structured according to a specific didactic method (such as Problem-Based Learning, PBL). A particularized LdShake instance has been used in the context of Human Biology studies where teams of teachers are required to work together in the design of PBL solutions. A controlled user study, that compares the use of a generic LdShake and a Moodle system, configured to enable the creation and sharing of designs, has been also carried out. The combined results of the real and controlled studies show that the social structure, and the commenting, co-edition and publishing features of LdShake provide a useful, effective and usable approach for facilitating teachers' teamwork.

When applying a Collaborative Learning Flow Pattern (CLFP) to structure sequences of activities in real contexts, one of the tasks is to organize groups of students according to the constraints imposed by the pattern. Sometimes,unexpected events occurring at runtime force this pre-defined distribution to be changed. In such situations, an adjustment of the group structures to be adapted to the new context is needed. If the collaborative pattern is complex, this group redefinitionmight be difficult and time consuming to be carried out in real time. In this context, technology can help on notifying the teacher which incompatibilitiesbetween the actual context and the constraints imposed by the pattern. This chapter presents a flexible solution for supporting teachers in the group organization profiting from the intrinsic constraints defined by a CLFPs codified in IMS Learning Design. A prototype of a web-based tool for the TAPPS and Jigsaw CLFPs and the preliminary results of a controlled user study are alsopresented as a first step towards flexible technological systems to support grouping tasks in this context.

Today, Temporary Labour Migration is a fundamental course of action promoted by relevant economic and political agents, such as EC, the GCIM, or the OECD. Based on a specific empirical case study of Temporary and Circular Labour Migration in the Catalonian agrarian sector, which has been distinguished as a particularly successful formula, we identify a new area of interest: the emergence of a new empirical migrant category, the Circular Labour Migrant, which remains theoretically unnamed and lacks public recognition. We argue that, until now, there have been two historical phases regarding temporary labour migration: one of total deregulation and another of partial regulation, led by private actors with support from public institutions, and featuring circularity. IN a developed Welfare State context, it would be normatively pertinent to except a step towards a third phase, one involving the institutionalization of this new mobility category through the elaboration of a public policy.

Visual inspection remains the most frequently applied method for detecting treatment effects in single-case designs. The advantages and limitations of visual inference are here discussed in relation to other procedures for assessing intervention effectiveness. The first part of the paper reviews previous research on visual analysis, paying special attention to the validation of visual analysts" decisions, inter-judge agreement, and false alarm and omission rates. The most relevant factors affecting visual inspection (i.e., effect size, autocorrelation, data variability, and analysts" expertise) are highlighted and incorporated into an empirical simulation study with the aim of providing further evidence about the reliability of visual analysis. Our results concur with previous studies that have reported the relationship between serial dependence and increased Type I rates. Participants with greater experience appeared to be more conservative and used more consistent criteria when assessing graphed data. Nonetheless, the decisions made by both professionals and students did not match sufficiently the simulated data features, and we also found low intra-judge agreement, thus suggesting that visual inspection should be complemented by other methods when assessing treatment effectiveness.

Tutkielman tavoitteena oli parantaa kohdeyrityksen myynnin raportoinnin käytettävyyttä toiminnanohjausjärjestelmämuutoksen jälkeen. Järjestelmämuutoksen jälkeen myyntitiedot siirtyivät puutteellisesti yrityksen tuloslaskentajärjestelmään. Tutkimus on empiriaan nojautuva tapaustutkimus. Siinätarkastellaan myynnin raportoinnin merkitystä yrityksen taloushallinnon raportoinnin osana sekä keinoja raportoinnin käytettävyyden varmistamiseksi. Lisäksi työssä käsitellään tietojärjestelmien osuutta taloushallinnon raportoinnissa ja tarkastellaan kohdeyrityksen tietojärjestelmiä ja niiden yhteistoimintaa. Empiirisen tutkimuksen tuloksena myyntitietojen puutteellisen siirtymisen syyksi havaittiin virheellinen poimintamääritys järjestelmien välillä.

Tarve kuntienväliselle yhteistyölle on kasvanut voimakkaasti. Pyrkimys kustannusten hallintaan ja tehokkaampien palveluntuotantomallien kehittämiseen on tuonut palveluiden ulkoistamisen voimakkaasti myös julkiselle sektorille. Menestyksekäs yhteistyö toisten kuntien ja palveluntuottajien kanssa vaatii osaamista myös kumppanuussuhteiden hallinnassa. Tehdyssä tutkimuksessa keskitytään juuri tähän osa-alueeseen vaikuttaviin tekijöihin. Tässä työssä keskitytään käsittelemään julkisen sektorin yhteistyötä toisten kuntien ja palveluntuottajan kanssa IT -sektorilla. Työssä tuodaan esiin teorian kautta yhteistyön kriittiset menestystekijät sekä tutkitaan näiden tekijöiden toteutumista todellisessa yhteistyössä kvalitatiivisen tutkimuksen avulla. Kvalitatiivisen tutkimuksen tulokset tukevat aiempia tutkimustuloksia siitä että luottamus, sitoutuminen, kommunikaatio sekä riippuvuus ja kontrolli ovattekijöitä jotka vaikuttavat yhteistyön onnistumiseen myös tutkitussa casessa.

Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena oli määrittää uuden markkinan valinnan perusteita teolliselle tuotteelle. Tutkielma keskittyi jo tunnettuihin kansainvälisen markkinavalinnan lähestymistapoihin ja pyrki soveltamaan yhtä menetelmää käytäntöön tutkielman empiria osassa case-tutkimuksen avulla. Tutkimusote oli tutkiva, eksploratiivinen ja perustui sekundääri analyysiin. Käytetyt tiedon lähteet olivat suureksi osin sekundäärisiä tuottaen kvalitatiivista tietoa. Kuitenkin haastatteluita suoritettiin myös. Kattava kirjallisuus katsaus tunnetuista teoreettisista lähestymistavoista kansainväliseen markkinavalintaan oli osa tutkielmaa. Kolme tärkeintä lähestymistapaa esiteltiin tarkemmin. Yksi lähestymistavoista, ei-järjestelmällinen, muodosti viitekehyksen tutkielman empiria-osalle. Empiria pyrki soveltamaan yhtä ei-järjestelmällisen lähestymistavan malleista kansainvälisessä paperiteollisuudessa. Tarkoituksena oli tunnistaa kaikkein houkuttelevimmat maat mahdollisille markkinointitoimenpiteille tuotteen yhdellä loppukäyttöalueella. Tutkielmassa päädyttiin käyttämään ilmastollisia olosuhteita, siipikarjan päälukua sekä siipikarjan kasvuprosenttia suodattimina pyrittäessä vähentämään mahdollisten maiden lukumäärää. Tutkielman empiria-osa kärsi selkeästi relevantin tiedon puutteesta. Siten myös tutkielman reliabiliteetti ja validiteetti voidaan jossain määrin kyseenalaistaa.
