The synthesis, structural characterization, voltammetric experiments and antibacterial activity of [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] were studied and compared with similar previously reported copper complexes. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O crystallized in a monoclinic system, space group C2/c where the nickel ion was in a slightly distorted octahedral environment, coordinated with two sulfisoxazole molecules through the heterocyclic nitrogen and four water molecules. [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] crystallized in a orthorhombic crystal system, space group Pnab. The nickel ion was in a distorted octahedral environment, coordinated by two aryl amine N from two sulfonamides acting as monodentate ligands and four N atoms (two sulfonamidic N and two heterocyclic N) from two different sulfonamide molecules acting as bidentate ligands. Differential pulse voltammograms were recorded showing irreversible peaks at 1040 and 1070 mV, respectively, attributed to Ni(II)/Ni(III) process. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] presented different antibacterial behavior against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli from the similar copper complexes and they were inactive against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The isotherms of adsorption of MeX2 (Me = Cu2+, Co2+; X = Cl-, Br-, ClO4-) by silica gel chemically modified with 2-mercaptoimidazole (SiMI) were studied in acetone and ethanol solutions, at 25 degrees C. Covalently attached 2-mercaptoimidazole molecule to silica gel surface adsorbs MeX2 from solvent by forming a surface complex. The metal is bonded to the surface through the nitrogen atom of attached 2-mercaptoimidazole. At low loading, the electronic and ESR spectral parameters indicated that the Cu2+ complexes are in a distorted-tetragonal symmetry field. The d-d electronic transition spectra showed that for Cu(ClO4)(2) complex, the peak of absorption did not change for any degree of metal loading and for Cl- and Br- complexes, the peak maxima shifted to higher energy with lower metal loading. The CoX2(X = Cl-, Br-, ClO4-) analogues possess a distorted-tetrahedral field.

Nowadays, the research for new and better antimicrobial compounds is an important field due to the increase of immunocompromised patients, the use of invasive medical procedures and extensive surgeries, among others, that can affect the incidence of infections. Another big problem associated is the occurrence of drug-resistant microbial strains that impels a ceaseless search for new antimicrobial agents. In this context, a series of heterocyclic- sulfonamide complexes with Co(II) was synthesized and characterized with the aim of obtaining new antimicrobial compounds. The structural characterization was performed using different spectroscopic methods (UV-Vis, IR, and EPR). In spite of the fact that the general stoichiometry for all the complexes was Co(sulfonamide)2·nH2O, the coordination atoms were different depending on the coordinated sulfonamide. The crystal structure of [Co(sulfamethoxazole)2(H2O)2]·H 2O was obtained by X-ray diffraction showing that Co(II) is in a slightly tetragonal distorted octahedron where sulfamethoxazole molecules act as a head-to-tail bridges between two cobalt atoms, forming polymeric chains. Besides, the activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, one of the responsible for tuberculosis, and the cytotoxicity on J774A.1 macrophage cells were evaluated. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Were synthesized in this work in the following aqueous solution coordination compounds: [Ni(LDP)(H2O)2Cl2].2H2O, [Co(LDP)Cl2].3H2O, [Ni(CDP)Cl2].4H2O, [Co(CDP)Cl2].4H2O, [Ni(BDZ)2Cl2].4H2O and [Co(BDZ)2Cl2(H2O)2]. These complexes were synthesized by stoichiometric addition of the binder in the respective metal chloride solutions. Precipitation occurred after drying the solvent at room temperature. The characterization and proposed structures were made using conventional analysis methods such as elemental analysis (CHN), absorption spectroscopy in the infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction by the powder method and Technical thermoanalytical TG / DTG (thermogravimetry / derivative thermogravimetry) and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry). These techniques provided information on dehydration, coordination modes, thermal performance, composition and structure of the synthesized compounds. The results of the TG curve, it was possible to establish the general formula of each compound synthesized. The analysis of X-ray diffraction was observed that four of the synthesized complex crystal structure which does not exhibit the complex was obtained from Ldopa and carbidopa and the complex obtained from benzimidazole was obtained crystal structures. The observations of the spectra in the infrared region suggested a monodentate ligand coordination to metal centers through its amine group for all complexes. The TG-DTG and DSC curves provide important information and on the behavior and thermal decomposition of the synthesized compounds. The molar conductivity data indicated that the solutions of the complexes formed behave as a nonelectrolyte, which implies that chlorine is coordinated to the central atom in the complex.

A series of Pt(II) diimine complexes bearing benzothiazolylfluorenyl (BTZ-F8), diphenylaminofluorenyl (NPh2- F8), or naphthalimidylfluorenyl (NI-F8) motifs on the bipyridyl or acetylide ligands (Pt-4−Pt-8), (i.e., {4,4′-bis[7-R1-F8-(≡)n-]bpy}Pt(7- R2-F8- ≡ -)2, where F8 = 9,9′-di(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene, bpy = 2,2′- bipyridine, Pt-4: R1 = R2 = BTZ, n = 0; Pt-5: R1 = BTZ, R2 = NI, n = 0; Pt-6: R1 = R2 = BTZ, n = 1; Pt-7: R1 = BTZ, R2 = NPh2, n = 1; Pt- 8: R1 = NPh2, R2 = BTZ, n = 1) were synthesized. Their ground-state and excited-state properties and reverse saturable absorption performances were systematically investigated. The influence of these motifs on the photophysics of the complexes was investigated by spectroscopic methods and simulated by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The intense absorption bands below 410 nm for these complexes is assigned to predominantly 1π,π* transitions localized on either the bipyridine or the acetylide ligands; while the broad low-energy absorption bands between 420 and 575 nm are attributed to essentially 1MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer)/ 1LLCT (ligand-to-ligand charge transfer) transitions, likely mixed with some 1ILCT (intraligand charge transfer) transition for Pt-4−Pt-7, and predominantly 1ILCT transition admixing with minor 1MLCT/1LLCT characters for Pt-8. The different substituents on the acetylide and bipyridyl ligands, and the degrees of π-conjugation in the bipyridyl ligand influence both the 1π,π* and charge transfer transitions pronouncedly. All complexes are emissive at room temperature. Upon excitation at their respective absorption band maxima, Pt-4, Pt-6, and Pt-8 exhibit acetylide ligand localized 1π,π* fluorescence and 3MLCT/3LLCT phosphorescence in CH2Cl2, while Pt-5 manifests 1ILCT fluorescence and 3ILCT phosphorescence. However, only 1LLCT fluorescence was observed for Pt-7 at room temperature. The nanosecond transient absorption study was carried out for Pt-4−Pt-8 in CH3CN. Except for Pt-7 that contains NPh2 at the acetylide ligands, Pt-4−Pt-6 and Pt-8 all exhibit weak to moderate excited-state absorption in the visible spectral region. Reverse saturable absorption (RSA) of these complexes was demonstrated at 532 nm using 4.1 ns laser pulses in a 2 mm cuvette. The strength of RSA follows this trend: Pt-4 > Pt-5 > Pt-7 > Pt-6 > Pt-8. Incorporation of electron-donating substituent NPh2 on the bipyridyl ligand significantly decreases the RSA, while shorter π-conjugation in the bipyridyl ligand increases the RSA. Therefore, the substituent at either the acetylide ligands or the bipyridyl ligand could affect the singlet and triplet excited-state characteristics significantly, which strongly influences the RSA efficiency.

Iron(II) complexes of 1-phenyl-2,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolone (antipyrine, Apy) and pyridine N-oxide (PyO), having the formulae [Fe(Apy)6](ClO4)2, Fe(Apy)2Cl2, Fe(Apy)2Br2, Fe(Apy)4I2, [Fe(PyO)3Cl3]2 . 2H2O, [Fe(PyO)Cl2 . 2H2O]2, [Fe(PyO)3Br2]2 and [Fe(PyO)6]I2 have been prepared and characterized. [Fe(Apy)6](ClO4)2 in nitrobenzene and [Fe(PyO)6]I2 in acetonitrile behave as 1:2 electrolytes; Fe(Apy)4I2 shows considerable dissociation while Fe(Apy)2Cl2 and Fe(Apy)2Br2 are non-electrolytes and monomeric in nitrobenzene. [Fe(PyO)3Cl2]2 . 2H2O and [Fe(PyO)3Br2]2 in nitrobenzene and [Fe(PyO)Cl2 . 2H2O]2 in acetonitrile behave as non-electrolytes. All the complexes are spin-free. The i.r. spectra show that the oxygens of the CO and NO groups are the donors in the Apy and PyO complexes. A large decrease in the NO stretching frequency in [Fe(PyO)Cl2. 2H2O]2 suggests PyO acts as a bridge forming a binuclear complex. The chloro and the bromo complexes of Apy have been assigned pseudo tetrahedral structures while the rest of the complexes have octahedral or near octahedral configurations around the iron(II) on the basis of the magnetic moments and the electronic transitions.
