A battle of elephants: (I)legitimate ethical voices?

In this paper, we aim to distil myriad stakeholder voices through a Foucaudian theoretical apparatus in the establishment of ethical stakeholder voices amidst a takeover of a Ghanaian National Bank with ownership control by the state National Pension Fund and Insurance Company. Resonating with Foucault’s position that, the prove and an actual practice of ethical principles despite risk is non-existent within a democracy, this paper reveals how stakeholders in a takeover further their own interest to the neglect of the very germane societal expectation of a salient stakeholder role. We further fill an existing gap within the stakeholder literature that posit of stakeholders as always possessing the right and ethical voices. We conclude that, despite Foucault’s last lecture of The Courage of Truth: The Government of the Self and others having proven of a robust apparatus in distilling ethical voices from non-ethical within the realm of a democratic field, its idealist nature demands a counterfactual position.

Thermal-optical properties of Ga : La : S glasses measured by thermal lens technique

In this work the quantitative theoretical treatment for two beam mode mismatched thermal lens spectrometry is applied to investigate the thermo-optical properties of chalcohalide (chalcolgenides and halides mixture) glasses. For the three kinds of glass studied the thermal diffusivity varied between 2.5 and 2.7 x 10(-3) cm(2) s(-1). Using these results and supposing Dulong-Petit specific heats we estimated the thermal conductivity and temperature ratio of optical path length (ds/dT) and temperature coefficient of refractive index (dn/dT). All samples had positive ds/dT(similar to 3.3 x 10(-6) K-1) and negative dn/dT (similar to -26 x 10(-6) K-1). The difference between these parameters and the change of signal are consequences of the expansion coefficient (13 x 10(-6) K-1) and refractive index (n similar to 2.6) of chalcohalides. Influence of Ga incorporation on photoinduced phenomena in Ge-S based glasses

To study the influence of Ga addition on photoinduced effect, GaGeS glasses with constant atomic ratio S/Ge = 2.6 have been prepared. Using Raman spectroscopy, we have reported the effect of Ga on the structural behavior of these glasses. An increase of the glass transition temperature T(g), the linear refractive index and the density have been observed with increasing gallium content. The photoinduced phenomena have been examined through the influence of time exposure and power density, when exposed to above light bandgap (3.53 eV). National Values and Theatrical Values. The Battle of the Siege de Calais (1765)

This article underscores the complex relationship between national concerns and dramatic criticism by interrogating the role of theatre in the creation of a 'national culture' during the last few decades of the Ancien regime. The author focuses more specifically on the forms of patriotism proposed by Pierre-Laurent De Belloy, author of Le Siege de Calais, France's "first tragedy in which the nation is given the pleasure to take an interest in itself," as well as by his adversaries and his allies. The version of patriotism proffered by De Belloy - a 'fatherland' that he defines as both bourgeois and monarchical - renders problematic several aesthetic and political norms in place in 1765. The author thus responds modestly to one of the most essential questions posed by research on eighteenth-century political and cultural history: how did patriotism operate before the French Revolution?

Application of Ga(68) -DOTA-exendin-4 PET/CT to localise an occult insulinoma

A 49 year old female presented to our Neuroendocrine Tumour (NET) centre with recurrent severe and disabling hypoglycaemia. She had previously been extensively investigated with a clinical and biochemical diagnosis of endogenous hyperinsulinemic hypoglycaemia although the source of hormonal hypersecretion could not be localised with MRI, EUS and (111) In-Octreotide scans. After extensive discussion the patient opted for blind surgical resection undergoing a pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy in December 2010. Histological examination of the resected operative specimen demonstrated a normal pancreas with no evidence of neuroendocrine tumour. Consistent with this, post-surgery her hypoglycaemic symptoms persisted with fasting capillary blood glucose of 2.1-6.0 mmol/l with increasing hypoglycaemia unawareness. Consequently she sought alternative clinical opinions from two European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS) Centres of Excellence who investigated her collaboratively. Decreased GA1 Content Caused by the Overexpression of OSH1 Is Accompanied by Suppression of GA 20-Oxidase Gene Expression

We previously reported that overexpression of the rice homeobox gene OSH1 led to altered morphology and hormone levels in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants. Among the hormones whose levels were changed, GA1 was dramatically reduced. Here we report the results of our analysis on the regulatory mechanism(s) of OSH1 on GA metabolism. GA53 and GA20, precursors of GA1, were applied separately to transgenic tobacco plants exhibiting severely changed morphology due to overexpression of OSH1. Only treatment with the end product of GA 20-oxidase, GA20, resulted in a striking promotion of stem elongation in transgenic tobacco plants. The internal GA1 and GA20 contents in OSH1-transformed tobacco were dramatically reduced compared with those of wild-type plants, whereas the level of GA19, a mid-product of GA 20-oxidase, was 25% of the wild-type level. We have isolated a cDNA encoding a putative tobacco GA 20-oxidase, which is mainly expressed in vegetative stem tissue. RNA-blot analysis revealed that GA 20-oxidase gene expression was suppressed in stem tissue of OSH1-transformed tobacco plants. Based on these results, we conclude that overexpression of OSH1 causes a reduction of the level of GA1 by suppressing GA 20-oxidase expression.

The Battle of the Bulge: The Surprising Last Stand Against State Marijuana Legalization

Although marijuana possession remains a federal crime, twenty-three states now allow use of marijuana for medical purposes and four states have adopted tax-and-regulate policies permitting use and possession by those twenty-one and over. In this article, I examine recent developments regarding marijuana regulation. I show that the Obama administration, after initially sending mixed signals, has taken several steps indicating an increasingly accepting position toward marijuana law reform in states; however the current situation regarding the dual legal status of marijuana is at best an unstable equilibrium. I also focus on what might be deemed the last stand of marijuana-legalization opponents, in the form of lawsuits filed by several states, sheriffs, and private plaintiffs challenging marijuana reform in Colorado (and by extension elsewhere). This analysis offers insights for federalism scholars regarding the speed with which marijuana law reform has occurred, the positions taken by various state and federal actors, and possible collaborative federalism solutions to the current state-federal standoff.
