Contains papers and photos including correspondence and other materials relating to work as Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Palestine (and Israel), as National Chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, as a leading campaigner for Israel Bonds, and as co-founder of and Chairman of the Board of the Weizmann Institute of Science; 2 texts of radio broadcasts made in 1948 informing America about the Israeli war for independence and the new Israeli republic; a list of military equipment supplied by Mr. Stone to Israel in 1948; letters and biographical material relating both to pressure applied by Mr. Stone and others on Pres. Truman to recognize and support the new Jewish state and to Mr. Stone's financial support of Truman's campaign and the Democratic Party in 1948; materials on associations with Boston University (including the dedication of the Dewey D. and Harry K. Stone Science Building), and the Truman Library; tributes and awards; biographical material; memorials; misc. speeches, presentations, and essays; misc. press clippings; and various photographs. La acción pedagógica de Las Hijas de la Caridad en España 1783-1893.

Exposición analítica sobre la praxis y el pensamiento pedagógico de Las Hijas de la Caridad de San Vicente de Paúl en el período 1783-1893. Principios y acción pedagógica de las Hermanas de la Caridad. Los temas tratados en este trabajo son los siguientes: llegada de la Compañía a España, pensionado de señoritas, régimen escolar y administración económica de los centros; ideario pedagógico y proceso educativo, las escuelas párvulos y de adultos, asilos infantiles. Las fuentes principales han sido los archivos municipales, parroquiales, los de las propias casas de las Hijas de la Caridad y de otra serie de instituciones. También se han consultado toda una serie de documentos referidos a la Compañía de San Vicente de Paúl. Se analiza la información encontrada en documentos y archivos siguiendo el método histórico. Se realiza una relación de las Instituciones creadas por esta Compañía, hasta 1983. En los anexos, además de las fuentes consultadas, aparece un apéndice dedicado a datos numéricos sobre diversos temas: situación de las inclusas, relación de centros vicencianos, distribución por provincias, estadísticas y ubicación de los centros.

Marguerite Tolbert Papers - Accession 203

Marguerite Tolbert (1893-1982) was a Winthrop alumna (class of 1914), club woman, and administrator with the Opportunity School in Columbia, South Carolina. The Marguerite Tolbert Papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, galley proofs, biographical sketches, newspaper clippings, and other records relating to the publication of the book, South Carolina’s Distinguished Women of Laurens County. Miss Tolbert served as coordinator for the book project. Also included is an unpublished manuscript written by Clara Yarborough concerning the terms of office of seven former South Carolina governors. Miss Yarborough served as secretary under these governors.

The transformation of bureaucracy? Structural change in the Commonwealth public service 1983-93

Commentators have predicted bureaucratic organisations would undergo substantial change as a result of social and economic pressures. We ask whether reforms to the Australian public service over the 1983–93 period exemplify this process. We use the methods of organisational analysis to characterise the direction of change, basing our assessment on the standard structural variables of complexity, formalisation and centralisation, together with a cultural variable. We find evidence that, overall, departments of state in the APS were becoming less bureaucratic in their structure, culture and internal function in the 1983–93 period. However, the effect was not uniform across departments, or unambiguous — formalisation, for example, increased in some respects and decreased in others. Centralisation increased overall, despite devolution of some decision-making.
