Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, dissociation energies, electron affinities, ionization potentials and dipole moments of the title molecules in neutral and charged ions were studied by use of density functional method. Ground states for each molecule were assigned. For neutral and cationic molecules, the bond distance decreases from YC (YC+) to RhC (RhC+), then increases, while for anionic molecules, the bond distance decreases from YC- to RuC-, then increases. Opposite trend was observed for vibrational frequency. The bond ionic character decreases from ZrC to PdC for neutral molecules. The bonding patterns are discussed and compared with the available studies.

By using the clinical bond theory of dielectric description, the chemical bond parameters of (Tl.Pb) - 1223 was calculated. The results show that the Sr-O, Tl-O, and Ca-O types of bond have higher ionic character and the Cu-O types of bond have more covalent, character. Mossbauer isomer shifts of Fe-57 and Sn-119 doped in (Tl, Pb) -1223 were calculated by using the chemical environmental factor, h, defined by covalency and electronic polarizability. Four valence state tin and three valence iron sites were identified ill Fe-57, and Sn-119 doped (Tl, Pb) -1223 superconductor. We conclude that all of' the Fe atoms substitute the Cu at square planar Cu (H site, whereas Sn prefers to Substitute the square pyramidal Cu (2) site.

The bonding and the 4f orbital effect of lanthanide elements at different valence state in their compounds have been studied by INDO method in this paper. The results obtained show that the bonding of lanthanide compounds is affected by many factors, such as valence state, ionic radius, ligand, coordinate number, space configuration etc. The strength of bonds composed of different ligands with lanthanide is distinctly different. The covalence of Ln-L bonds of lanthanide ions at high valence state in their compounds is larger than that at low valence state, The covalency at low coordinate number is larger than that at high coordinate number. Some lanthanide compounds with special configuration, besides sigma-bond, can form p(pi)-d(pi) dative bond with much overlap, which makes the Ln-L bond increase markedly. The effect of 4f orbitals on bonding is far less than that of 5d orbitals. The Ln 4f orbitals at 3 or 2 valence state may be considered to be essentially localized, while the contribution of 4f orbitals on bonding in 4 valent cerium compounds increases obviously, up to 1%.

Hydrogen bonding in clusters and extended layers of squaric acid molecules has been investigated by density functional computations. Equilibrium geometries, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and energy barriers for proton transfer along hydrogen bonds have been determined using the Car-Parrinello method. The results provide crucial parameters for a first principles modeling of the potential energy surface, and highlight the role of collective modes in the low-energy proton dynamics. The importance of quantum effects in condensed squaric acid systems has been investigated, and shown to be negligible for the lowest-energy collective proton modes. This information provides a quantitative basis for improved atomistic models of the order-disorder and displacive transitions undergone by squaric acid crystals as a function of temperature and pressure. Crystallisation of the square-planar complex trans-Pt{PPh2(C16H15)}(2)Cl-2 from dichloromethane-diethyl ether (1:1) affords two different solvates; trans-Pt{PPh2(C16H15)}(2)Cl-2. CH2Cl2 1 and trans-Pt{PPh2(C16H15)}(2)Cl-2. Et2O 2; the CH2Cl2 forms H-bonding interactions with the complex whereas the Et2O participates only in weak van der Waals interactions; these differences arise from the different hydrogen-bonding characteristics of each solvent.

Aqua complex ions of metals must have existed since the appearance of water on the earth, and the subsequent appearance of life depended on, and may even have resulted from the interaction of metal ions with organic molecules. Studies on the coordinating ability of metal ions with other molecules and anions culminated in the theories of/\lfred Werner. Thereon the progress in the studies of metal complex chemistry was rapid. Many factors, like the utility and economic importance of metal chemistry, the intrinsic interest _in many of the compounds and the intellectual challenge of the structural problems to be solved, have contributed to this rapid progress. X—ray diffraction studies further accelerated the progress. The work cited in this thesis was carried out by the author in the Department of Applied Chemistry during 2001-2004. The primary aim of these investigations was to synthesise and characterize some transition metal complexes of 2-benzoylpyridine N(4)-substituted thiosemicarbazones and to study the antimicrobial activities of the ligands and their metal complexes. The work is divided into eight chapters

We report the creation of strained silicon on silicon (SSOS) substrate technology. The method uses a relaxed SiGe buffer as a template for inducing tensile strain in a Si layer, which is then bonded to another Si handle wafer. The original Si wafer and the relaxed SiGe buffer are subsequently removed, thereby transferring a strained-Si layer directly to Si substrate without intermediate SiGe or oxide layers. Complete removal of Ge from the structure was confirmed by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy as well as secondary ion mass spectrometry. A plan-view transmission electron microscopy study of the strained-Si/Si interface reveals that the lattice-mismatch between the layers is accommodated by an orthogonal array of edge dislocations. This misfit dislocation array, which forms upon bonding, is geometrically necessary and has an average spacing of approximately 40nm, in excellent agreement with established dislocation theory. To our knowledge, this is the first study of a chemically homogeneous, yet lattice-mismatched, interface.

Interactions between electrons determine the structure and properties of matter from molecules to solids. Therefore, the understanding of the electronic structure of molecules will enable us to extract relevant chemical information. In the first part of this thesis, we focus our attention on the analysis of chemical bonding by means of the Electron Localization Function (ELF) and the Domain-Averaged Fermi Hole analysis (DAFH). In the second part, we assess the performance of some indicators of aromaticity by analyzing their advantages and drawbacks. We propose a series of tests based on well-known aromaticity trends that can be applied to evaluate the aromaticity of current and future indicators of aromaticity in both organic and inorganic species. Moreover, we investigate the nature of electron delocalization in both aromatic and antiaromatic systems in the light of Hückel’s (4n + 2) rule. Finally, we analyze the phenomenon of multiple aromaticity in all-metal clusters.

Thin silicon nitride films were prepared at 350 degrees C by inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition on Si(100) substrates under different NH(3)/SiH(4) or N(2)/SiH(4) gas mixture. The chemical composition and bonding structure of the deposited films were investigated as a function of the process parameters, such as the gas flow ratio NH(3)/SiH(4) or N(2)/SiH(4) and the RF power, using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The gas flow ratio was 1.4, 4.3, 7.2 or 9.5 and the RF power, 50 or 100 W. Decomposition results of Si 2p XPS spectra indicated the presence of bulk Si, under-stoichiometric nitride, stoichiometric nitride Si(3)N(4), oxynitride SiN(x)O(y), and stoichiometric oxide SiO(2), and the amounts of these compounds were strongly influenced by the two process parameters. These results were consistent with those obtained from N 1s XPS spectra. The chemical composition ratio N/Si in the film increased with increasing the gas flow ratio until the gas flow ratio reached 4.3, reflecting the high reactivity of nitrogen, and stayed almost constant for further increase in gas flow ratio, the excess nitrogen being rejected from the growing film. A considerable and unexpected incorporation of contaminant oxygen and carbon into the depositing film was observed and attributed to their high chemical reactivity. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Objective The objective was to examine the effect of a solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on resin-dentin bond durability, as well as potential functional mechanisms behind the effect. Methods Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) was evaluated in extracted human teeth in two separate experiments. Dentin specimens were acid-etched and assigned to pre-treatment with 0.5 mM (0.004%) DMSO as additional primer for 30 s and to controls with water pre-treatment. Two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (Scotchbond 1XT, 3M ESPE) was applied and resin composite build-ups were created. Specimens were immediately tested for μTBS or stored in artificial saliva for 6 and 12 months prior to testing. Additional immediate and 6-month specimens were examined for interfacial nanoleakage analysis under SEM. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibition by DMSO was examined with gelatin zymography. Demineralized dentin disks were incubated in 100% DMSO to observe the optical clearing effect. Results The use of 0.5 mM DMSO had no effect on immediate bond strength or nanoleakage. In controls, μTBS decreased significantly after storage, but increased significantly in DMSO-treated group. The control group had significantly lower μTBS than DMSO-group after 6 and 12 months. DMSO also eliminated the increase in nanoleakage seen in controls. 5% and higher DMSO concentrations significantly inhibited the gelatinases. DMSO induced optical clearing effect demonstrating collagen dissociation. Significance DMSO as a solvent may be useful in improving the preservation of long-term dentin-adhesive bond strength. The effect may relate to dentinal enzyme inhibition or improved wetting of collagen by adhesives. The collagen dissociation required much higher DMSO concentrations than the 0.5 mM DMSO used for bonding. © 2013 Academy of Dental Materials.

The N-H center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen bond is an important intermolecular interaction in many biological systems. We have investigated the infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) spectra of the supersonic-jet cooled complex of pyrrole with benzene and benzene-d(6) (Pyr center dot Bz, Pyr center dot Bz-d(6)). DFT-D density functional, SCS-MP2 and SCS-CC2 calculations predict a T-shaped and (almost) C(s) symmetric structure with an N-H center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen bond to the benzene ring. The pyrrole is tipped by omega(S(0)) = +/- 13 degrees relative to the surface normal of Bz. The N center dot center dot center dot ring distance is 3.13 angstrom. In the S(1) excited state, SCS-CC2 calculations predict an increased tipping angle omega(S(1)) = +/- 21 degrees. The IR depletion spectra support the T-shaped geometry: The NH stretch is redshifted by -59 cm(-1), relative to the "free" NH stretch of pyrrole at 3531 cm(-1), indicating a moderately strong N-H center dot center dot center dot pi interaction. The interaction is weaker than in the (Pyr)(2) dimer, where the NH donor shift is -87 cm(-1) [Dauster et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2008, 10, 2827]. The IR C-H stretch frequencies and intensities of the Bz subunit are very similar to those of the acceptor in the (Bz)(2) dimer, confirming that Bz acts as the acceptor. While the S(1) <- S(0) electronic origin of Bz is forbidden and is not observable in the gas-phase, the UV spectrum of Pyr center dot Bz in the same region exhibits a weak 0(0)(0) band that is red-shifted by 58 cm(-1) relative to that of Bz (38 086 cm(-1)). The origin appears due to symmetry-breaking of the p-electron system of Bz by the asymmetric pyrrole NH center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen bond. This contrasts with (Bz)(2), which does not exhibit a 0(0)(0) band. The Bz moiety in Pyr center dot Bz exhibits a 6a(0)(1) band at 0(0)(0) + 518 cm(-1) that is about 20x more intense than the origin band. The symmetry breaking by the NH center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen bond splits the degeneracy of the v(6)(e(2g)) vibration, giving rise to 6a' and 6b' sub-bands that are spaced by similar to 6 cm(-1). Both the 0(0)(0) and 6(0)(1) bands of Pyr center dot Bz carry a progression in the low-frequency (10 cm(-1)) excited-state tipping vibration omega', in agreement with the change of the omega tipping angle predicted by SCS-MP2 and SCS-CC2 calculations.
