Geometry and geography

This is an extract from an ongoing project: a ficitionalised memoir in poetic fragments connecting personal trauma with the fall-out from the scientific research in the Cold War. It is influenced by Michel Blanchot's The Writing of the Disaster and an ongoing meditation on the poetics of Marguerite Duras and the poetics of awkwardness.

Snap

‘Snap’ deploys the queer cliché of becoming-sailor as a trope for recognition in the amorous encounter and literalises the ‘copycat’ as its catalyst. As Girard argues (1973), the human is foremost mimetic: this story makes its claim for originality and authenticity of connection through the playful recycling of cliché.‘Snap’ eschews the relative affectlessness of some metafiction by staging an amorous approach under the shadow of mortality. It exploits the liminal moment of modernist short fiction to summon the ‘manifold’ of experience. Anankè et le symbolisme del l'architecture dans Notre-Dame de Paris de Victor Hugo

Esta dissertação propõe uma leitura textual do romance Notre-Dame de Paris, de Victor Hugo, a partir de algumas imagens singulares apresentadas nesta produção hugoliana. O objetivo deste percurso de pesquisa consiste em evidenciar a leitura simbólica da obra em questão, captada das relações da literatura com a arquitetura, configurada por algumas imagens nucleares, como Anankè, que assombra as figuras que povoam o romance, como o advento da imprensa, como a lucarna, como a cela do padre, entre outras. Sob este ângulo, acredita-se que o campo psicanalítico permite decifrar os efeitos do enigma e da fascinação produzidos pela obra hugoliana sobre o leitor. Nesse sentido, considera-se que o inconsciente representa o ponto de irradiação das pulsões, território que vai traduzir as relações espaciais da literatura com a arquitetura, enquanto expressões do simbólico. Desta maneira, o caminho de pesquisa se articula em três capítulos. Enquanto o primeiro, intitulado "Notre-Dame de Paris e a representação por imagens", visa a situar este percurso de pesquisa do ponto de vista do corpus teórico, representado, sobretudo, por Barthes e Blanchot, no que se refere à literatura, e por Freud, no que se refere à psicanálise; o segundo, intitulado "Notre-Dame de Paris e a crítica literária", procura apresentar uma leitura crítica baseada em quatro prefácios diferentes, de Notre-Dame de Paris: enfatizam o que seus autores destacam no contexto histórico que aparece escondido sob as imagens impostas pela escritura hugoliana; finalmente, o terceiro, intitulado "Imagens simbólicas de Notre-Dame de Paris", estabelece a leitura textual das imagens simbólicas que se produzem em Notre-Dame de Paris, intermediadas pelo cruzamento da literatura com a arquitetura.

Foucault : a experiência da amizade

Exaltée par la philosophie et reléguée à second plan par la sociologie, pour son appartenance à la vie privée, l amitié devient, à partir des anées 70, um thème d intétêret nom plus sous la perspective classique de la philia, avec son insistance sur la fraternité, égalité et dans l équivalence des amis.Les études de Hannah Arendt,Blanchot,Derrida et Foucault déséquilibrent cette vison, et la rédéfinissent em tant qu ne rapport qui donne lieu à l alterité et permet les manifestations des singularités entre amis. En reprendant ces penseurs, Michel Foucault tente réhabililiter l amitié en tant qu ne éthique et une esthétique de l existence qui conduit à la transformation du sujet, stylisant son existence dans la présence de l autre. Basés sur cette réhabilitation, nous penserons l amitié comme une expérience éthique et afective intense qui cherche autotransformation des amis, une forme de vie qui refuse les formes imposées de rapports et subjectivités

Cartografias do desejo em asfalto selvagem - engraçadinha, seus amores e seus pecados: humor, erotismo e o pornógrafo no romance rodrigueano

Trata-se nesta dissertação de estabelecer, partindo do pensamento contemporâneo francês da linha deleuziana e guattariana, sobretudo, uma analítica do desejo capaz de reconfigurar o romance de Nelson Rodrigues, Asfalto selvagem: Engraçadinha, seus amores e seus pecados, desterritorializá-lo em relação à tradição crítica e estética, fundada no paradigma realista-naturalista enraizado no pensamento literário brasileiro, especificamente no século XX. Movemo-nos por discussões sobre o autor e sobre o romance, empreendidas por Rolnik, interlocutora de Guattari, o qual está ligado aos novos paradigmas estéticos, à questão da produção de subjetividades, à micropolítica, às multiplicidades e às minorias. Buscamos contribuir para esse redimensionamento, colocando-nos na perspectiva cartográfica e rizomática para surpreender, em Asfalto, seus processos de subjetivação, incidindo sobre as singularidades selvagens, considerando os conceitos de Foucault, aplicados à construção literária enquanto espaço heterotópico, configurando a experiência do fora, como princípios estéticos. Veremos que as personagens, com foco em Engraçadinha, funcionam, como pequenas máquinas desejantes, Corpos sem Órgãos, moléculas desestabilizando as formações molares. Destarte, Nelson Rodrigues, na perspectiva da produção autoral, torna-se o pornógrafo, o literato iterador, como agenciador de uma palavra perversa, para além dos dogmas, da cena romantizada, originando, em sua poética, a revelação da obs-cena, a obscenidade, como crítica às instituições falidas. Trazemos, nesse sentido, referências de Bataille, quanto ao que na atividade estética se relaciona com o excedente da visão, relacionados ao espaço tático-ótico, concepção deleuziana referentes ao corpo-linguagem, pornografia, pornógrafo, narrativas abomináveis. Acompanhamo-nos, pois, dos conceitos da problemática da diferença e da alteridade, repercutindo na larvaridade, nas afecções, que abrem vias comunicantes com fenômenos extremos, atuantes em torno do mesmo e do outro, trazendo a rizomaticidade do mal e da monstruosidade para a construção estética de Asfalto selvagem, vistos sob a ótica de Bataille, Deleuze, Baudrillard, em ensaios que rompem o olhar estrutural em torno da obra e oferecem subsídios para a construção de uma cartografia outra, o território do ficcional, habitado por um povo por vir, na perspectiva tratada por Deleuze e por Blanchot

"Um passeio nos campos seria uma viagem pelo mundo”: linguagem e experiência em Dalcídio Durandir

Trabalho pela pluralidade do texto de Dalcídio Jurandir, Chove nos campos de Cachoeira (1941). O trabalho é uma prática semiológica, principalmente com R. B. par lui-même (1975) de Roland Barthes, a sua teoria do texto plural. Assim, persigo a teoria do texto de Dalcídio Jurandir, a que é a sua própria, a que nasce da sua própria prática significante, Dalcídio Jurandir por Dalcídio Jurandir. Nesse passo, Dalcídio Jurandir com Augusto e Haroldo de Campos, com Roman Jakobson, Dalcídio Jurandir um poeta na prosa; com Maurice Blanchot, com a tradição de invenção, Dalcídio Jurandir produtor de metalinguagem; com a antropologia e a geopoética, Dalcídio Jurandir das paisagens do arquipélago do Marajó. Tudo em função da abertura dos sentidos do seu texto. O texto de Dalcídio Jurandir contradiz todo empreendimento ledor que o submete à determinação referencial e ao fechamento dos seus sentidos. O canto das Sereias e a embriaguez do tradutor

Sabemos que para os românticos alemães a tradução tem um caráter fundador, estando associada ao próprio conceito de Bildung, como já assinalava Antoine Berman. A Bildung remete necessariamente à dimensão da experiência, processo de desdobramento e alargamento que encontra uma metáfora perfeita na noção de viagem, tão cara aos românticos. Tal movimento de travessia que constitui a inquietante "tarefa do tradutor" pode ser entendido como uma navegação por essa região nebulosa onde se ouve o canto das Sereias e, como pensava Maurice Blanchot, corre-se o risco do desaparecimento.

No centro da crítica a experiência incomunicável da paixão crítica: uma teoria do fascínio

Em torno dos signos fascínio (do universo de Maurice Blanchot) e escritura (do universo de Roland Barthes), tendo como ponto de partida as concepções críticas e estéticas de Charles Baudelaire, este trabalho procura discutir algumas características da crítica-escritura: aquela que recria a metáfora das obras, constituindo-se ela própria como produção notável por suas especificidades metafóricas, podendo ser também denominada crítica-poética, crítica inventiva, crítica metafórica ou escritura- crítica, revelando que escritor é aquele que tem consciência da linguagem enquanto problematização e da força da literatura em sua luta contra a impossibilidade de representar o real.

Alignment of the CMS tracker with LHC and cosmic ray data

Description and performance of track and primary-vertex reconstruction with the CMS tracker

A description is provided of the software algorithms developed for the CMS tracker both for reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in proton-proton interactions and for using the resulting tracks to estimate the positions of the LHC luminous region and individual primary-interaction vertices. Despite the very hostile environment at the LHC, the performance obtained with these algorithms is found to be excellent. For t (t) over bar events under typical 2011 pileup conditions, the average track-reconstruction efficiency for promptly-produced charged particles with transverse momenta of p(T) > 0.9GeV is 94% for pseudorapidities of vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.9 and 85% for 0.9 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.5. The inefficiency is caused mainly by hadrons that undergo nuclear interactions in the tracker material. For isolated muons, the corresponding efficiencies are essentially 100%. For isolated muons of p(T) = 100GeV emitted at vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.4, the resolutions are approximately 2.8% in p(T), and respectively, 10 m m and 30 mu m in the transverse and longitudinal impact parameters. The position resolution achieved for reconstructed primary vertices that correspond to interesting pp collisions is 10-12 mu m in each of the three spatial dimensions. The tracking and vertexing software is fast and flexible, and easily adaptable to other functions, such as fast tracking for the trigger, or dedicated tracking for electrons that takes into account bremsstrahlung.

Traces de terre, traces d'encre... La rappresentazione dello spazio nella letteratura caraibica. (Francofona e Anglofona)

This study concerns the representation of space in Caribbean literature, both francophone and Anglophone and, in particular, but not only, in the martinican literature, in the works of the authors born in the island. The analysis focus on the second half of the last century, a period in which the martinican production of novels and romances increased considerably, and where the representation and the rule of space had a relevant place. So, the thesis explores the literary modalities of this representation. The work is constituted of 5 chapters and the critical and methodological approaches are both of an analytical and comparative type. The first chapter “The caribbean space: geography, history and society” presents the geographic context, through an analysis of the historical and political major events occurred in the Caribbean archipelago, in particular of the French Antilles, from the first colonization until the départementalisation. The first paragraph “The colonized space: historical-political excursus” the explores the history of the European colonization that marked forever the theatre of the relationship between Europe, Africa and the New World. This social situation take a long and complex process of “Re-appropriation and renegotiation of the space”, (second paragraph) always the space of the Other, that interest both the Antillean society and the writers’ universe. So, a series of questions take place in the third paragraph “Landscape and identity”: what is the function of space in the process of identity construction? What are the literary forms and representations of space in the Caribbean context? Could the writing be a tool of cultural identity definition, both individual and collective? The second chapter “The literary representation of the Antillean space” is a methodological analysis of the notions of literary space and descriptive gender. The first paragraph “The literary space of and in the novel” is an excursus of the theory of such critics like Blanchot, Bachelard, Genette and Greimas, and in particular the recent innovation of the 20th century; the second one “Space of the Antilles, space of the writing” is an attempt to apply this theory to the Antillean literary space. Finally the last paragraph “Signs on the page: the symbolic places of the antillean novel landscape” presents an inventory of the most recurrent antillean places (mornes, ravines, traces, cachots, En-ville,…), symbols of the history and the past, described in literary works, but according to new modalities of representation. The third chapter, the core of the thesis, “Re-drawing the map of the French Antilles” focused the study of space representation on francophone literature, in particular on a selected works of four martinican writers, like Roland Brival, Édouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant. Through this section, a spatial evolution comes out step by step, from the first to the second paragraph, whose titles are linked together “The novel space evolution: from the forest of the morne… to the jungle of the ville”. The virgin and uncontaminated space of the Antilles, prior to the colonisation, where the Indios lived in harmony with the nature, find a representation in both works of Brival (Le sang du roucou, Le dernier des Aloukous) and of Glissant (Le Quatrième siècle, Ormerod). The arrival of the European colonizer brings a violent and sudden metamorphosis of the originary space and landscape, together with the traditions and culture of the Caraïbes population. These radical changes are visible in the works of Chamoiseau (Chronique des sept misères, Texaco, L’esclave vieil homme et le molosse, Livret des villes du deuxième monde, Un dimanche au cachot) and Confiant (Le Nègre et l’Amiral, Eau de Café, Ravines du devant-jour, Nègre marron) that explore the urban space of the creole En-ville. The fourth chapter represents the “2nd step: the Anglophone novel space” in the exploration of literary representation of space, through an analytical study of the works of three Anglophone writers, the 19th century Lafcadio Hearn (A Midsummer Trip To the West Indies, Two Years in the French West Indies, Youma) and the contemporary authors Derek Walcott (Omeros, Map of the New World, What the Twilight says) and Edward Kamau Brathwaite (The Arrivants: A New World Trilogy). The Anglophone voice of the Caribbean archipelago brings a very interesting contribution to the critical idea of a spatial evolution in the literary representation of space, started with francophone production: “The spatial evolution goes on: from the Martiniques Sketches of Hearn… to the modern bards of Caribbean archipelago” is the new linked title of the two paragraphs. The fifth chapter “Extended look, space shared: the Caribbean archipelago” is a comparative analysis of the results achieved in the prior sections, through a dialogue between all the texts in the first paragraph “Francophone and Anglophone representation of space compared: differences and analogies”. The last paragraph instead is an attempt of re-negotiate the conventional notions of space and place, from a geographical and physical meaning, to the new concept of “commonplace”, not synonym of prejudice, but “common place” of sharing and dialogue. The question sets in the last paragraph “The “commonplaces” of the physical and mental map of the Caribbean archipelago: toward a non-place?” contains the critical idea of the entire thesis.

Measurement of the W+ W- cross section in sqrt(s) = 7 TeV pp collisions with ATLAS

This Letter presents a measurement of the W+ W- production cross section in sqrt(s) = 7  TeV pp collisions by the ATLAS experiment, using 34  pb(-1) of integrated luminosity produced by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Selecting events with two isolated leptons, each either an electron or a muon, 8 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 1.7 ± 0.6 events. The measured cross section is 41(-16)(+20)(stat) ± 5(syst)±1(lumi)  pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction of 44 ± 3  pb calculated at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Search for a heavy particle decaying into an electron and a muon with the ATLAS detector in sqrt[s] = 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC

This Letter presents the first search for a heavy particle decaying into an e ± μ(-/+) final state in sqrt[s] = 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector during 2010 and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 35 pb(-1). No excess above the standard model background expectation is observed. Exclusions at 95% confidence level are placed on two representative models. In an R-parity violating supersymmetric model, tau sneutrinos with a mass below 0.75 TeV are excluded, assuming all R-parity violating couplings are zero except λ(311)' = 0.11 and λ312 = 0.07. In a lepton flavor violating model, a Z'-like vector boson with masses of 0.70-1.00 TeV and corresponding cross sections times branching ratios of 0.175-0.183 pb is excluded. These results extend to higher mass R-parity violating sneutrinos and lepton flavor violating Z's than previous constraints from the Tevatron.

Measurement of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

Azimuthal decorrelations between the two central jets with the largest transverse momenta are sensitive to the dynamics of events with multiple jets. We present a measurement of the normalized differential cross section based on the full data set (∫Ldt=36  pb(-1)) acquired by the ATLAS detector during the 2010 sqrt(s)=7  TeV proton-proton run of the LHC. The measured distributions include jets with transverse momenta up to 1.3 TeV, probing perturbative QCD in a high-energy regime.
