Quimeras de oriente: Edith Wharton en Marruecos

[ES]En In Morocco (1919), Edith Wharton relata la crónica de un viaje realizado por el Marruecos colonial de finales de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Con el sentido del tiempo que le inspira el paisaje magrebí, Wharton reinterpreta la historia de Marruecos acercándonos un país con un pasado que parece estar vivo. Su recorrido presenta una doble vertiente: por un lado, Wharton no pierde detalle de las imágenes de miseria y sordidez que forman parte de los estereotipos coloniales del viajero occidental; por otro, el romance que encierra In Morocco, el crisol orientalista y la visión de Las mil y una noches que se percibe en su impresiones, revisten el relato de una mirada mágica y fantasiosa que difiere de la realidad del país.

Travelogues involve different truth claims, depending on whether their authors attempt on the one hand to convey received knowledge about entities and places, or on the other hand, present accounts of the traveler character’s own experiences. This study focuses on a travelogue from 1764 written by the Arabian Nights’ Syrian storyteller, Ḥanna Dyāb. Having written his travelogue more than 50 years after his trip to Paris, he evidently conceived of his narrative as a means to re-enact his experiences as a young traveler. To describe his particular self-staging in this autodiegetic narration “before fiction” (Paige 2011), I argue that an understanding of focalization as a graded visual mediation between the character’s inner life and the reader is needed. This approach helps one grasp how, with reference to Dyāb’s travelogue, truth is not something the traveler witnesses, but rather something the reader is invited to realize. I conclude that, with this shift from witnessing to visualization (Vergegenwärtigung), Dyāb’s travelogue fulfills a core function of literature.

The magical transformation contest in the ancient storytelling tradition

El concurso de transformación mágica, esquema narrativo difundido en la tradición popular, se presenta en dos variantes principales: los hechiceros que compiten pueden metamorfosearse en varios seres o crear esos seres por medios mágicos. En cualquier caso el concursante ganador da a luz criaturas más fuertes que superan las de su oponente. La segunda variante fue preferida en el antiguo Cercano Oriente (Sumeria, Egipto, Israel). La primera se puede encontrar en algunos mitos griegos sobre cambiadores de forma (por ejemplo, Zeus y Némesis). El mismo esquema narrativo puede haber influido en un episodio de la Novela de Alejandro (1.36-38), en el que Darío envía regalos simbólicos a Alejandro y los dos monarcas enemigos ofrecen contrastantes explicaciones de ellos.
