Historic records of α-dicarbonyls (glyoxal, methylglyoxal), carboxylic acids (C6–C12 dicarboxylic acids, pinic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, phthalic acid, 4-methylphthalic acid), and ions (oxalate, formate, calcium) were determined with annual resolution in an ice core from Grenzgletscher in the southern Swiss Alps, covering the time period from 1942 to 1993. Chemical analysis of the organic compounds was conducted using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled to electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-HRMS) for dicarbonyls and long-chain carboxylic acids and ion chromatography for short-chain carboxylates. Long-term records of the carboxylic acids and dicarbonyls, as well as their source apportionment, are reported for western Europe. This is the first study comprising long-term trends of dicarbonyls and long-chain dicarboxylic acids (C6–C12) in Alpine precipitation. Source assignment of the organic species present in the ice core was performed using principal component analysis. Our results suggest biomass burning, anthropogenic emissions, and transport of mineral dust to be the main parameters influencing the concentration of organic compounds. Ice core records of several highly correlated compounds (e.g., p-hydroxybenzoic acid, pinic acid, pimelic, and suberic acids) can be related to the forest fire history in southern Switzerland. P-hydroxybenzoic acid was found to be the best organic fire tracer in the study area, revealing the highest correlation with the burned area from fires. Historical records of methylglyoxal, phthalic acid, and dicarboxylic acids adipic acid, sebacic acid, and dodecanedioic acid are comparable with that of anthropogenic emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The small organic acids, oxalic acid and formic acid, are both highly correlated with calcium, suggesting their records to be affected by changing mineral dust transport to the drilling site.

Elemental composition, functional groups, and molecular mass distribution were determined in humic acids from the Western Pacific abyssal and coastal bottom sediments. Humic acid structure was studied by oxidative degradation with alkaline nitrobenzene and potassium permanganate, p-coumaric, guaiacilic, and syringilic structural units typical for lignin of terrestrial plants were identified in humic acids by chromatographic analysis of oxidation products. Polysubstituted and polycondensed aromatic systems with minor proportion of aliphatic structures were basic structural units of humic acids in abyssal sediments.

There is an urgent need to treat restenosis, a major complication of the treatment of arteries blocked by atherosclerotic plaque, using local delivery techniques. We observed that cross-linked fibrin (XLF) is deposited at the site of surgical injury of arteries. An antibody to XLF, conjugated to anti-restenotic agents, should deliver the drugs directly and only to the site of injury. An anti-XLF antibody (H93.7C.1D2/48; 1D2) was conjugated to heparin (using N-succinimidyl 3-(2-pyridyldithio)-propionate), low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) (adipic acid dihydrazide) and rapamycin (1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide), and the conjugates purified and tested for activity before use in vivo. Rabbits had their right carotid arteries de-endothelialised and then given a bolus of 1D2-heparin, 1D2-LMWH or 1D2-rapamycin conjugate or controls of saline, heparin, LMWH, rapamycin or 1D2 (+/-heparin bolus) and sacrificed after 2 or 4 weeks (12 groups, n=6/group). Rabbits given any of the conjugates had minimal neointimal development in injured arteries, with up to 59% fewer neointimal cells than those given control drugs. Rabbits given 1D2-heparin or 1D2-LMWH had an increased or insignificant reduction in luminal area, with positive remodelling, while the medial and total arterial areas of rabbits given 1D2-rapamycin were not affected by injury. Arteries exposed to 1D2-heparin or 1D2-rapamycin had more endothelial cells than rabbits given control drugs. Thus, XLF-antibodies can site-deliver anti-restenotic agents to injured areas of the artery wall, where the conjugates can influence remodelling, re-endothelialisation and neointimal cell density, with reduced neointimal formation. The chemical composition of surface associated metabolites of two Fucus species (Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus serratus) was analysed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to describe temporal patterns in chemical surface composition. Method: The two perennial brown macroalgae F. vesiculosus and F. serratus were sampled monthly at Bülk, outer Kiel Fjord, Germany (54°27'21 N / 10°11'57 E) over an entire year (August 2012 - July 2013). Per month and species six non-fertile Fucus individuals were collected from mixed stands at a depth of 0.5 m under mid water level. For surface extraction approx. 50 g of the upper 5-10 cm apical thalli tips were cut off per species. The surface extraction of Fucus was performed according to the protocol of de Nys and co-workers (1998) with minor modifications (see Rickert et al. 2015). GC/EI-MS measurements were performed with a Waters GCT premier (Waters, Manchester, UK) coupled to an Agilent 6890N GC equipped with a DB-5 ms 30 m column (0.25 mm internal diameter, 0.25 mM film thickness, Agilent, USA). The inlet temperature was maintained at 250°C and samples were injected in split 10 mode. He carrier gas flow was adjusted to 1 ml min-1. Alkanes were used for referencing of retention times. For further details (GC-MS sample preparation and analysis) see the related publication (Rickert et al. submitted to PLOS ONE).

Through layer-by-layer assembly, a series of undecatungstozincates monosubstituted by first-row transition metals, ZnW11M(H2O)O-39(n-) (M=Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu. or Zn) were first successfully immobilized on a 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrode surface. The electrochemical behaviors of these polyoxometalates were investigated. They exhibit some special properties in the films different from those in homogeneous aqueous solution. The Cu-centered reaction mechanism in the ZnW11Cu multilayer film was described. The electrocatalytic behaviors of these multilayer film electrodes to the reduction of H2O2 and BrO3- were comparatively studied.

4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was covalently grafted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amine cation radical formation in the electrooxidation process of the amino-containing compound. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement proves the presence of 4-carboxylphenylamine monolayer on the GCE. The redox responses of various electroactive probes were investigated on the 4-ABA-modified GCE. Electron transfer to Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in solutions of various pHs was studied by both cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance analysis on the modified electrode. Changes in the solution pH value result in the variation of the terminal group charge state, based on which surface pK(a) values are estimated. The 4-ABA-modified GCE was used as a suitable charged substrate to fabricate polyoxometalates-consisting (POM-consisting) monolayer and multilayer films through layer-by-layer assembly based on electrostatic attraction. Cyclic voltammetry shows the uniform growth of these three-dimensional multilayer films. Taking K10H3[Pr-(SiMo7W4O39)(2)]. H2O (abbreviated as Pr(SiMo7W4)(2)), for example, the preparation and electrochemical behavior of its monolayer and multilayer film had been investigated in detail. This modification strategy is proven to be a general one suitable for anchoring many kinds of POMs on the 4-ABA-modified GCE.

A family of 4-hydroxybenzamide-dicarboxylic acid cocrystals has been designed and subsequently isolated and characterized. The design strategy follows from an understanding of synthon modularity in crystal structures of monocomponent crystals such as gamma-quinol, 4,4'-biphenol and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. These monocomponent structures contain infinite O-H center dot center dot center dot O-H center dot center dot center dot O-H center dot center dot center dot cooperative synthons linked with molecular connectors such as phenyl and biphenyl, and supramolecular connectors such as the acid dimer in 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The cocrystal design was influenced by the anticipation that dicarboxylic acids can form a supramolecular connector mediated by acid-amide synthons with 4-hydroxybenzamide, which can then form the phenol O-H center dot center dot center dot O-H center dot center dot center dot O-H center dot center dot center dot infinite synthon. Effectively, the acid-amide and phenol synthons are insulated. The short axis of such a structure will be around 5.12 angstrom and this is borne out in 2:1 cocrystals of 4-hydroxybenzamide with oxalic, succinic, fumaric, glutaric (two forms) and pimelic acids. Hydrated variations of this structure type are seen in the cocrystals obtained with adipic and sebacic acids.

Through layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly technique, iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles coated by poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and Preyssler-type polyoxometalates (NH4)(14)NaP5W30O110.31H(2)O (P5W30) were alternately deposited on quartz and ITO substrates, and 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrodes. Thus-prepared multilayer films were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. It was proved that the multilayer films are uniform and stable. And the electrocatalytic activities of the multilayer films can be fine-tuned by adjusting the assembly conditions in the LBL assembly process, such as the pH of the assembly solution. The multilayer films fabricated from P5W30 solutions dissolved in 0.1 M H2SO4 exhibit high electrocatalytic response and sensitivity toward the reduction of two substrates of important analytical interests, HNO2 and IO3- whereas the films assembled with P5W30 solutions dissolved in 1.0 M H2SO4 show remarkable electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Furthermore, the electrocatalytic properties of the HER of the latter film can be obtained from the former film upon exposure to 1.0 M H2SO4 for several hours.

A novel and facile chemical synthesis of highly faceted multiply twinned gold nanocrystals is reported. The gold nanocrystals are hexagonal in transmission electron microscopy and icosahedral in scanning electron microscopy. Phosphotungstic acid (PTA), which was previously reduced, serves as a reductant and stabilizer for the synthesis of gold nanocrystals. The PTA-gold nanocomposites are quite stable in aqueous solutions, and electrochemically active towards the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Multilayers of anionic phosphotungstic acid (PTA) clusters and positively charged protonated poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) were assembled by layer-by-layer self-assembled method on Au electrode modified by 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA). The effect of the charge of the surface of the multilayer assembly on the kinetics of the charge transfer reaction was studied by using the redox probes [Fe(CN)(6)](3-)/(4-) [Ru(NH3)(6)](2+/3+). The cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that the peak currents and peak-to-peak potential differences changed after assembling different layers on the electrode surface indicating that the charge of the surface has a significant effect on the kinetics of the studied charge transfer reactions. These reactions were studied in more detail by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. When [Fe(CN)(6)](3-/-) was used as the redox label, multilayers that terminated with negatively charged PTA showed a high charge transfer resistance but multilayers that terminated with positively charged PAH showed lower charge transfer resistance. With [Ru(NH3)(6)](2+/3+) as the redox label, the charge transfer resistance at multilayers that terminated with positively charged PAH was much higher than at the multilayer terminated by the negatively charged PTA.

This is the first example of benzotriazole-polyoxometalates species. The compound crystallized in a triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 1. 8378 (4) nm. b = 1. 9078 (4) nm. c = 2.1037 (4) nm. alpha = 63.41 (3)degrees. beta = 64.31 (3)degrees. gamma = 68.38 (3)degrees. V = 5.803 (2) nm(3). Z = 2. R-1 = 0.0486, wR(2) = 0.1357. The X-ray crystallographic study showed that the crystal structure was constructed by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds between dodecamolybdophosphorate anions and protonated benzotriazole cations. The electrochemical behavior and the reduction of nitrite and hydrogen peroxide clectrocatalyzed by the title compound were studied.

A novel hybrid photochromic composite film composed of Preyssler's heteropoly acid H-12[EuP5W30O110] (EuP5W30) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was prepared by dip-coating method. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to investigate the surface topography. The change of characteristic peak in the infrared spectra (IR) was investigated. The TG curve showed three steps of weight loss and approximately revealed the composition of the hybrid film. Ultraviolet-visible adsorption spectra (UV-VIS) and electron resonance spectrum (ESR) were used to investigate the photochromic behavior and mechanism of hybrid film. The photoluminescent behavior of the film at room temperature was investigated to show the characteristic Eu3+ emission pattern of D-5(o)-F-7(J). The occurrence of photoluminescent activity confirms the potential for creating luminescent thin film with polyoxometalates (POMs).
