We analyzed the oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of planktonic and benthic foraminifers picked from 13 late Eocene to late Oligocene samples from DSDP Site 540 (23°49.73'N, 84°22.25'W, 2926 m water depth) from the Gulf of Mexico. An enrichment occurs in 18O of about 0.5 to 0.8 per mil in both benthic foraminifers and surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifers between the latest Eocene and early Oligocene. This early Oligocene maximum is followed by lower 18O values. A 1.2 per mil d13C decrease in both benthic and planktonic foraminiferal data occurs from the late Eocene to the late Oligocene. There is a correspondence of the 13C signal to deep-sea records; however, the amplitude of this change is greater than previously seen in deep-sea cores, possibly as a result of proximity to terrestrial sources of carbon. The covarying isotopic changes in both benthic and planktonic foraminifers suggest global causes, such as ice volume increases and increased terrestrial carbon input to the ocean. However, during the latter part of the record (early-late Oligocene), the increases in the benthic 18O without accompanying increases observed with planktonic foraminifers suggest that changes in only one part of the system occurred; one potential explanation being a decrease in bottom-water temperatures without concomitant changes in the surface waters. The 18O differences between species of planktonic foraminifers and the difference between planktonic and benthic 18O data indicate that diagenesis problems are minimal. These preliminary results are encouraging given that these cores are partially lithified.

Zusammenfassung:In dieser Arbeit werden die Abzweigung stationärer Punkte und periodischer Lösungen von isolierten stationären Punkten rein nichtlinearer Differentialgleichungen in der reellenEbene betrachtet.Das erste Kapitel enthält einige technische Hilfsmittel, während im zweiten ausführlich das Verhalten von Differentialgleichungen in der Ebene mit zwei homogenen Polynomen gleichen Grades als rechter Seite diskutiert wird.Im dritten Kapitel beginnt der Hauptteil der Arbeit. Hier wird eine Verallgemeinerung des Hopf'schen Verzweigungssatzes bewiesen, der den klassischen Satz als Spezialfall enthält.Im vierten Kapitel untersuchen wir die Abzweigung stationärer Punkte und im letzten Kapitel die Abzweigung periodischer Lösungen unter Störungen, deren Ordnung echt kleiner ist, als die erste nichtverschwindende Näherung der ungestörten Gleichung.Alle Voraussetzungen in dieser Arbeit sind leicht nachzurechnen und es werden zahlreiche Beispiele ausführlich diskutiert.

Seventy-one samples from nine sites were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC). Fifty-six samples, containing 0.2% or more TOC, were evaluated by Rock-Eval to assess the nature of their kerogen and its petroleum source potential. Visual kerogen studies were carried out. Petroleum potential was encountered only in Valanginian calcareous claystones at Hole 692B close to the margin of Dronning Maud Land. A section of 44.7 m was penetrated. The unit possesses a revised mean TOC of 9.8% and petroleum potential of 43.2 kg/Mg, relatively high values in comparison to other Cretaceous anoxic oceanic sections and the totality of petroleum source rocks. At Sites 689 and 690, extremely low TOC levels, mean 0.07%, preclude kerogen analysis. Kerogens in Eocene to Pliocene sediments of the central and western Weddell Sea (Sites 694, 695, 696, and 697) are similar everywhere, largely comprising brown to black, granular, amorphous material of high rank, and generally possessing several reflectance populations of vitrinite particles. The latter are interpreted as indicative of the recycling of sediments of a variety of levels of thermal maturity.

The differential effects of climate change, sea level, and water mass circulation on deposition/erosion of marine sediments can be constrained from the distribution of unconformities in the world's oceans. I identified temporal and depth patterns of hiatuses ("hiatus events") from a large and chronologically well constrained stratigraphic database of deep-sea sediments. The Paleogene is characterized by few, several million year long hiatuses. The most significant Cenozoic hiatus event spans most of the Paleocene. The Neogene is characterized by short, frequent hiatus events nearly synchronous in shallow and deep water sediments. Epoch boundaries are characterized by peaks in deep water hiatuses possibly caused by an increased circulation of corrosive bottom water and sediment dissolution. The Plio-Pleistocene is characterized by a gradual decrease in the frequency of hiatuses. Future studies will focus on the regional significance of the hiatus events and their possible causes.

Five of the six sites drilled during Leg 77 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project yielded Cretaceous sediments. Two of these sites, 535 and 540, form a composite section that spans the upper Berriasian through most of the Cenomanian. Olive black marly limestones in this interval yield relatively rich, well-preserved nannofossil assemblages that allow biostratigraphic subdivision of the sequence. This composite section provides important information on the Early Cretaceous history of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as additional information on tropical Lower Cretaceous nannofossil assemblages. The post-Cenomanian nannofossil (and sedimentary) record is limited to a thin, condensed section of Santonian through lower Maestrichtian pelagic sediments at one site (538) and is absent or represented by redeposited material at the other sites. Two new genera, Perchnielsenella and Darwinilithus, are described. Two new taxa, Darwinilithus pentarhethum and Lithraphidites acutum ssp. eccentricum, are described; and two new combinations, Rhagodiscus reightonensis and Perchnielsenella stradneri, are propose.

Three of the six DSDP Leg 77 sites drilled in the western approaches to the Straits of Florida yielded thick sequences of Cenozoic sediment rich in calcareous nannofossils. Hiatuses are prominent in each of these continuously cored intervals. A prominent upper Oligocene hiatus, observed at each of these three sites, can be correlated to a large-scale "global" regression event. Other disconformable horizons present in the study area cannot be positively related to sealevel fluctuations and may be caused by a number of factors including local tectonic activity. Paleogene sections are generally marked by thick accumulations within the upper Oligocene Sphenolithus ciperoensis Zone and by a pronounced braarudosphaerid-holococcolith bloom recorded in the lower Oligocene and upper Eocene. This bloom is particularly well developed at Site 540. All samples examined contain abundant nannofossils. Preservation fluctuates throughout the sections from good to poor.

Analyses of 40 carbonate core samples - 27 from Site 535, 12 from Site 540, and 1 from Site 538A - have confirmed many of the findings of the Shipboard Scientific Party. The samples, all but one Early to mid-Cretaceous in age (Berriasian to Cenomanian), reflect sequences of cyclically anoxic and oxic depositional environments. They are moderately to very dark colored, dominantly planar-parallel, laminated lime mudstones. Most show the effects of intense mechanical compaction. Visual kerogen characteristics and conventional Rock-Eval parameters indicate that these deep basinal carbonates contain varying mixtures of thermally immature kerogen derived from both marine and terrigenous precursors. However, variations in kerogen chemistry are evident upon analysis of the pyrolysis mass spectral data in conjunction with the other geochemical analyses. Particularly diagnostic is the reduction index, Rl, a measure of H2S produced during pyrolysis. Total organic carbon, TOC, ranges from 0.6 to 6.6%, with an overall average of 2.4%. Average TOCs for these fine-grained mudstones are: late Eocene 2.5% (1 sample), Cenomanian 2.2% (6), Albian 2.0% (10), Aptian 1.3% (1), Barremian-Hauterivian 2.8% (11), late Valanginian 4.8% (3), Berriasian-early Valanginian 1.6% (7). Most of the carbonates have source-potential ratings of fair to very good of predominantly oil-prone to mixed kerogen, with only a few gas-prone samples. The ratings correlate well with the inferred depositional environments, i.e., whether oxic or anoxic. Several new organic-geochemical parameters, especially Rl, based on pyrolysis mass spectrometry of powdered whole-rock samples, support this view. Tar from fractures in laminated to bioturbated limestones of Unit IV (late Valanginian) at 535-58-4, 19-20 cm (530 m sub-bottom) appears to be mature, biodegraded, and of migrated rather than on site indigenous origin.
