Heavy and light minerals were examined in 29 samples from Sites 494, 498, 499, 500, and 495 on the Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 67 Middle America Trench transect; these sites represent lower slope, trench, and oceanic crust environments off Guatemala. All samples are Quaternary except those from Hole 494A (Pliocene) and Hole 498A (Miocene). Heavy-mineral assemblages of the Quaternary sediments are characterized by an immature pyroxene-amphibole suite with small quantities of olivine and epidote. The Miocene sediments yielded an assemblage dominated by epidote and pyroxene but lacking olivine; the absence of olivine is attributed to selective removal of the most unstable components by intrastratal solution. Light-mineral assemblages of all samples are predominantly characterized by volcanic glass and plagioclase feldspar. The feldspar compositions are compatible with andesitic source rocks and frequently exhibit oscillatory zoning. The heavy- and light-mineral associations of these sediments suggest a proximal volcanic source, most probably the Neogene highland volcanic province of Guatemala. Sand-sized components from Site 495 are mainly biogenic skeletons and volcanic glass and, in one instance (Section 495-5-3), euhedral crystals of gypsum.

Insoluble residues of Late Cretaceous to Quaternary deep-sea samples from slope, trench, and oceanic plate sites south of Guatemala were examined, specifically for the distribution of clay minerals in the <2-µm fraction and of silt grains in the 20-63-µm fraction. Widespread "oceanic" particles (biogenic opal, rhyolitic glass) and their diagenetic products (smectite, clinoptilolite, heulandite) were distinguished from terrigenous material - illite, kaolinite, chlorite, plagioclase, quartz, and heavy minerals. The main results of this investigation are: (1) At Site 494 on the slope immediately adjacent to the trench, terrigenous supplies testify to a slope position of the whole sequence back to the Late Cretaceous. (2) At Site 495 on the Pacific Cocos Plate, "oceanic" and terrigenous sedimentation are clearly separated. Whereas the pelagic sedimentation prevailed in the early Miocene, terrigenous minerals appeared in the middle Miocene in the clay fraction, and in the early Pliocene in the coarse silt fraction. These terrigenous supplies are interpreted as having been transported by suspension clouds crossing the slope and even the trench. The alternative, however, an eolian transport, cannot be excluded.

Dispersed organic matter of plant origin from three sites of the Middle America Trench transect was investigated by coal petrographic methods. Samples from the slope region are rich in lipoid and inert substances. Humic matter is predominant in the trench sediments. Reflectance measurements show that the rank of the organic matter is peat, independent of the tectonic position and age of the samples in question. A slow increase of coalification with depth is observed.

Deformation features within the cores are studied with a view towards elucidating the structure of the Middle America Trench along the transect drilled during Leg 67. Where possible, inferences are made as to the physical environment of deformation. Extensional tectonics prevails in the area of the seaward slope and trench. Fracturing and one well-preserved normal fault are found mostly within the lower Miocene chalks, at the base of the sedimentary section. These chalks have high porosities (40%-60%) and water content (30%-190%, based on % dry wt.). Experimental triaxial compression tests conducted on both dry and water-saturated samples of chalk from Holes 495 and 499B show that only in the saturated samples is more brittle behavior observed. Brittle failure of the chalks is greatly facilitated by pore fluid pressures that lead to low effective pressures. Additional embrittlement (weakening) can take place as a result of the imposed extensional stress resulting from bending of a subducting elastic oceanic plate. The chalks exhibit, in a landward direction, an increase in density and mechanical strength and a decrease in water content. These changes are attributed to mechanical compaction that may have resulted from tectonic horizontal compression. The structure of the landward slope is not well understood because the slope sites had to be abandoned due to the presence of gas hydrate. The relationship of the chaotic, brittle deformation (observed in the cores from Hole 494A) at the base of the landward slope to tectonic processes remains unclear. The deformation observed on the slope sites (Holes 496 and 497) is mostly fracturing and near-vertical sigmoidal veinlets. These are interpreted as being the result of gas/fluid overpressurization due to the decomposition of the gas hydrate, and not due to tectonic loading of accreted sediments. Aside from four small displacement (less than 1cm) reverse faults observed in the lower Miocene chalks (which may be the product of soft-sediment deformation), there is a noticeable absence of structures reflecting a dominance of horizontal (tectonic) compression along the transect drilled. The absence of such features, the lack of continuity of sediment types across the trench-landward slope, and the normal stratigraphic sequence in Hole 494A do not support any known accretionary model.

Sediments collected from three continental slope sites of Leg 67 have been examined for total organic carbon content and amount of the sterols beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol. The amount of beta-sitosterol relative to stigmasterol is found to increase landward in the sediment, despite differing ages of the samples studied. The ratio of beta-sitosterol to stigmasterol in near-shore sediments is proposed as a source proximity indicator.

Secondary minerals in basalts from Holes 495 and 500 include smectite and chlorite, both of which have partially replaced the basalt groundmass. In addition to these two minerals, amphibole, laumontite, albite, and a corrensitelike mineral are present in Holes 499B and 499C. Smectite, chlorite, talc, calcite, phillipsite, mica, and mixed-layer chlorite-montmorillonite also fill veins in the basalts of Hole 495. The secondary mineral assemblages from Site 499 are characteristic of the initial stage of greenschist facies metamorphism.

Interstitial water chemistry has proved to be a sensitive indicator for early diagenetic reactions, particularly those related to organic matter oxidation. Downhole chemical variations in the pore waters from Deep Sea Drilling Project Holes 496 and 497 on the Middle America Trench slope off Guatemala are anomalous because both salinity and chlorinity show strong decreases to half the values of seawater, and d18O values become positive (maximum of about +2.5% at the bottom of the holes). These observations are explained in terms of dilution of pore waters after retrieval as a result of decomposition of the gas hydrates before removal of pore waters by shipboard squeezing techniques. In all holes, except Hole 495 (drilled in pelagic sediments), decomposition of organic matter leads to rapid sulfate depletion and subsequent methane generation. Associated with methane generation are large increases in alkalinity and dissolved ammonia. The latter component causes ion exchange reactions with clay minerals, which results in maxima in magnesium and perhaps potassium. At greater depths, as yet unidentified reactions cause the removal of magnesium. Especially in the deeper Trench Sites 499 and 500, rapid variations in calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity occur in turbidite sequences.

During the Leg 67 drilling of the Middle America Trench (Guatemala transect), basalts were reached in Hole 495, 22 km seaward from the Trench axis, in Holes 500 and 500B at the foot of the continental slope, and at four other holes not sampled for this study. Only olivine-plagioclase phyric basalts are present in Hole 495, whereas in Holes 500 and 500B these rocks are associated with plagioclase phyric high-alumina basalts. As illustrated by the content of TiO2, Al2O3, and the K2O/K2O + Na2O ratio, some of the Middle America Trench basalts do not differ essentially from oceanic tholeiites, but others have a composition transitional to island-arc tholeiitic basalts. It is suggested that basalts transitional from oceanic to island-arc tholeiites are typical manifestations of magmatism in zones of convergence of the oceanic and continental or island-arc crust.
