Method for measurement of the angles of 90-, 45-, 45-deg and 60-, 30-, 90-deg prisms

A simple technique is devised to measure the angles of 90-, 45-, 45-deg and 60-, 30-, 90-deg prisms without using expensive spectrometers, autocollimators, and angle gauges. Role of rigidity and temperature in the kinetics of photodarkening in Ge(x)As((45-x))Se(55) thin films

We present insightful results on the kinetics of photodarkening (PD) in Ge(x)As(45-x)Se(55) glasses at the ambient and liquid helium temperatures when the network rigidity is increased by varying x from 0 to 16. We observe a many fold change in PD and its kinetics with decreasing network flexibility and temperature. Moreover, temporal evolution of PD shows a dramatic change with increasing x. Influences of the springtime northern Indian biomass burning over the central Himalayas

The influences of the springtime northern Indian biomass burning are shown for the first time over the central Himalayas by using three years (2007-2009) of surface and space based observations along with a radiative transfer model. Near-surface ozone, black carbon (BC), spectral aerosol optical depths (AODs) and the meteorological parameters are measured at a high altitude site Nainital (29.37 degrees N, 79.45 degrees E, 1958 m amsl) located in the central Himalayas. The satellite observations include the MODIS derived fire counts and AOD (0.55 mu m), and OMI derived tropospheric column NO(2), ultraviolet aerosol index and single scattering albedo. MODIS fire counts and BC observations are used to identify the fire-impacted periods (372 h during 2007-2009) and hence the induced enhancements in surface BC, AOD (0.5 mu m) and ozone are estimated to be 1802 ng m(-3) (similar to 145%), 0.3 (similar to 150%) and 19 ppbv (similar to 34%) respectively. Large enhancements (53-100%) are also seen in the satellite derived parameters over a 2 degrees x 2 degrees region around Nainital. The present analysis highlights the northern Indian biomass burning induced cooling at the surface (-27 W m(-2)) and top of the atmosphere (-8 W m(-2)) in the lesser polluted high altitude regions of the central Himalayas. This cooling leads to an additional atmospheric warming of 19 W m(-2) and increases the lower atmospheric heating rate by 0.8 K day(-1). These biomass burning induced changes over the central Himalayan atmosphere during spring may also lead to enhanced short-wave absorption above clouds and might have an impact on the monsoonal rainfall.

Controlling phase separation in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.45) epitaxial thin films by strain disorder

Present study reveals that the length-scale of phase separation in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 thin films can be controlled by strain disorder invoked during the growth and relaxation process of film. Strain disorder provides an additional degree of freedom to tune colossal magnetoresistance. Magneto-transport measurements following cooling and heating in unequal fields protocol demonstrate that coherent strain stabilizes antiferromagnetic insulating phase, while strain disorder favors ferromagnetic metallic phase. Compared to bulk, antiferromagnetic-insulating phase freezes at lower temperatures in strain disordered films. Raman spectroscopy confirms the coexistence of charge-ordered-insulating and ferromagnetic-metallic phases which are structurally dissimilar and possess P2(1)/m and R-3C like symmetries, respectively. Significant Residue Features Revealed By Eigenvalue Decomposition Analysis Of Blosum Matrices

Here we attempt to characterize protein evolution by residue features which dominate residue substitution in homologous proteins. Evolutionary information contained in residue substitution matrix is abstracted with the method of eigenvalue decomposition. Top eigenvectors in the eigenvalue spectrums are analyzed as function of the level of similarity, i.e. sequence identity (SI) between homologous proteins. It is found that hydrophobicity and volume are two significant residue features conserved in protein evolution. There is a transition point at SI approximate to 45%. Residue hydrophobicity is a feature governing residue substitution as SI >= 45%. Whereas below this SI level, residue volume is a dominant feature. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

材料的疲劳过程是能量耗散的过程,在宏观上表现为热耗散,能量理论是研究材料疲劳行为微观机理和宏观现象的桥梁。文中利用红外热像仪对具有颈缩部分的45号钢试件疲劳过程中的温度变化进行了研究,探讨了影响温度变化的机制,并介绍了快速确定45号钢疲劳极限的方法。实验结果表明,该方法所测得的疲劳极限合理,且该方法具有非接触、便捷、低成本等优点。
