The phosphate mineral sigloite Fe3+Al2(PO4)2(OH)3·7(H2O), an exception to the paragenesis rule – a vibrational spectroscopic study

The secondary phosphate mineral sigloite Fe3+Al2(PO4)2(OH)3·7H2O is the exception to the rule that phosphate mineral paragenesis is related to the final phase of hydrothermal mineralization at low temperatures. Sigloite was formed as an oxidation pseudomorph after paravauxite, during the last supergene paragenetic stage. We have studied the secondary phosphate mineral sigloite Fe3+Al2(PO4)2(OH)3·7H2O using vibrational spectroscopic techniques. Because the mineral is a phosphate mineral, it is readily studied by spectroscopic techniques as the phosphate and hydrogen phosphate units are readily measured. Indeed, sigloite shows the presence of both phosphate and hydrogen phosphate units in its structure. Raman bands at 1009 cm−1 with shoulders at 993 and 1039 cm−1 are assigned to stretching vibrations of and units. The Raman band at 993 cm−1 is assigned to the ν1 symmetric stretching mode of the POH units, whereas the Raman band at 1009 cm−1 is assigned to the ν1 symmetric stretching mode. Raman bands observed at 506, 528, 571, 596, 619 and 659 cm−1 are attributed to the ν4 out of plane bending modes of the PO4 and H2PO4 units. The Raman bands at 2988, 3118 and 3357 cm−1 are assigned to water stretching vibration. The series of bands at 3422, 3449, 3493, 3552 and 3615 cm−1 are assigned to the OH stretching vibrations of the hydroxyl units. The observation of multiple bands gives credence to the non-equivalence of the OH units in the sigloite structure.

Antibiotic resistance and virulence traits in clinical and environmental Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium isolates

This study compared virulence and antibiotic resistance traits in clinical and environmental E. faecalis and E. faecium isolates. E. faecalis isolates harboured a broader spectrum of virulence determinants compared to E. faecium isolates. The virulence traits Cyl-A, Cyl-B, Cyl-M, gel-E and esp were tested and environmental isolates predominantly harboured gel-E (80% of E. faecalis and 31.9% of E. faecium) whereas esp was more prevalent in clinical isolates (67.79% of E. faecalis and 70.37 % of E. faecium). E. faecalis and E. faecium isolated from water had different antibiotic resistance patterns compared to those isolated from clinical samples. Linozolid resistance was not observed in any isolates tested and vancomycin resistance was observed only in clinical isolates. Resistance to other antibiotics (tetracycline, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin and ampicillin) was detected in both clinical and water isolates. Clinical isolates were more resistant to all the antibiotics tested compared to water isolates. Multi-drug resistance was more prevalent in clinical isolates (71.18% of E. faecalis and 70.3 % of E. faecium) compared to water isolates (only 5.66 % E. faecium). tet L and tet M genes were predominantly identified in tetracycline-resistant isolates. All water and clinical isolates resistant to ciprofloxacin and ampicillin contained mutations in the gyrA, parC and pbp5 genes. A significant correlation was found between the presence of virulence determinants and antibiotic resistance in all the isolates tested in this study (p<0.05). The presence of antibiotic resistant enterococci, together with associated virulence traits, in surface recreational water could be a public health risk.

DrsG from Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp equisimilis inhibits the antimicrobial peptide LL- 37

SIC and DRS are related proteins present in only four of the more than 200 Streptococcus pyogenes emm-types. These proteins inhibit complement mediated lysis and/or the activity of certain antimicrobial peptides. A gene encoding a homologue of these proteins, herein called DrsG, has been identified in the related bacterium Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp equisimilis (SDSE). Here we show that geographically dispersed isolates representing 14 of 50 emm-types examined possess variants of drsG. However not all isolates within the drsG-positive emm-types possess the gene. Sequence comparisons also reveal a high degree of conservation in different SDSE emm-types. To examine the biological activity of DrsG, recombinant versions of two major DrsG variants, DrsGS and DrsGL, were expressed and purified. Western blot analysis using antisera raised to these proteins demonstrated both variants to be expressed and secreted into culture supernatant. Unlike SIC, but similar to DRS, DrsG does not inhibit complement mediated lysis. However, like both SIC and DRS, DrsG is a ligand of the cathelcidin LL-37 and is inhibitory to its bactericidal activity in in vitro assays. The greatest similarity between DrsG and DRS/SIC is found in the signal sequence at the amino terminus and proline rich domains in the C-terminal half of the protein. Conservation of prolines in this latter region also suggests these residues are important in the biology of this family of proteins. This is the first report demonstrating the activity of an AMP inhibitory protein in SDSE. These results also suggest that inhibition of AMP activity is the primary function of this family of proteins. The acquisition of complement inhibitory activity of SIC may reflect its continuing evolution.

Afatinib versus cisplatin-based chemotherapy for EGFR mutation-positive lung adenocarcinoma (LUX-Lung 3 and LUX-Lung 6): analysis of overall survival data from two randomised, phase 3 trials

Background We aimed to assess the effect of afatinib on overall survival of patients with EGFR mutation-positive lung adenocarcinoma through an analysis of data from two open-label, randomised, phase 3 trials. Methods Previously untreated patients with EGFR mutation-positive stage IIIB or IV lung adenocarcinoma were enrolled in LUX-Lung 3 (n=345) and LUX-Lung 6 (n=364). These patients were randomly assigned in a 2:1 ratio to receive afatinib or chemotherapy (pemetrexed-cisplatin [LUX-Lung 3] or gemcitabine-cisplatin [LUX-Lung 6]), stratified by EGFR mutation (exon 19 deletion [del19], Leu858Arg, or other) and ethnic origin (LUX-Lung 3 only). We planned analyses of mature overall survival data in the intention-to-treat population after 209 (LUX-Lung 3) and 237 (LUX-Lung 6) deaths. These ongoing studies are registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, numbers NCT00949650 and NCT01121393. Findings Median follow-up in LUX-Lung 3 was 41 months (IQR 35–44); 213 (62%) of 345 patients had died. Median follow-up in LUX-Lung 6 was 33 months (IQR 31–37); 246 (68%) of 364 patients had died. In LUX-Lung 3, median overall survival was 28·2 months (95% CI 24·6–33·6) in the afatinib group and 28·2 months (20·7–33·2) in the pemetrexed-cisplatin group (HR 0·88, 95% CI 0·66–1·17, p=0·39). In LUX-Lung 6, median overall survival was 23·1 months (95% CI 20·4–27·3) in the afatinib group and 23·5 months (18·0–25·6) in the gemcitabine-cisplatin group (HR 0·93, 95% CI 0·72–1·22, p=0·61). However, in preplanned analyses, overall survival was significantly longer for patients with del19-positive tumours in the afatinib group than in the chemotherapy group in both trials: in LUX-Lung 3, median overall survival was 33·3 months (95% CI 26·8–41·5) in the afatinib group versus 21·1 months (16·3–30·7) in the chemotherapy group (HR 0·54, 95% CI 0·36–0·79, p=0·0015); in LUX-Lung 6, it was 31·4 months (95% CI 24·2–35·3) versus 18·4 months (14·6–25·6), respectively (HR 0·64, 95% CI 0·44–0·94, p=0·023). By contrast, there were no significant differences by treatment group for patients with EGFR Leu858Arg-positive tumours in either trial: in LUX-Lung 3, median overall survival was 27·6 months (19·8–41·7) in the afatinib group versus 40·3 months (24·3–not estimable) in the chemotherapy group (HR 1·30, 95% CI 0·80–2·11, p=0·29); in LUX-Lung 6, it was 19·6 months (95% CI 17·0–22·1) versus 24·3 months (19·0–27·0), respectively (HR 1·22, 95% CI 0·81–1·83, p=0·34). In both trials, the most common afatinib-related grade 3–4 adverse events were rash or acne (37 [16%] of 229 patients in LUX-Lung 3 and 35 [15%] of 239 patients in LUX-Lung 6), diarrhoea (33 [14%] and 13 [5%]), paronychia (26 [11%] in LUX-Lung 3 only), and stomatitis or mucositis (13 [5%] in LUX-Lung 6 only). In LUX-Lung 3, neutropenia (20 [18%] of 111 patients), fatigue (14 [13%]) and leucopenia (nine [8%]) were the most common chemotherapy-related grade 3–4 adverse events, while in LUX-Lung 6, the most common chemotherapy-related grade 3–4 adverse events were neutropenia (30 [27%] of 113 patients), vomiting (22 [19%]), and leucopenia (17 [15%]). Interpretation Although afatinib did not improve overall survival in the whole population of either trial, overall survival was improved with the drug for patients with del19 EGFR mutations. The absence of an effect in patients with Leu858Arg EGFR mutations suggests that EGFR del19-positive disease might be distinct from Leu858Arg-positive disease and that these subgroups should be analysed separately in future trials.

An electron diffraction study of quasicrystals in Ti-37 at% Mn and Ti-24 at% Mn-13 at% Fe alloys

Electron diffraction studies were carried out to establish the icosahedral phase formation in rapidly quenched Ti-37 at% Mn and Ti-24 at% Mn-13 at% Fe alloys. Distortions in the diffraction spots and diffuse intensities in the diffraction patterns were investigated. The existence of a rational approximant structure and a decagonal like phase are also reported.

Formation of amorphous xenon nanoclusters and microstructure evolution in pulsed laser deposited Ti(62.5)Si(37.5) thin films during Xe ion irradiation

As deposited amorphous and crystallized thin films of Ti 37.5% Si alloy deposited by pulsed laser ablation technique were irradiated with 100 keV Xe(+) ion beam to an ion fluence of about 10(16) ions-cm(-2). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the implanted Xe formed amorphous nanosized clusters in both cases. The Xe ion-irradiation favors nucleation of a fcc-Ti(Si) phase in amorphous films. However, in crystalline films, irradiation leads to dissolution of the Ti(5)Si(3) intermetallic phase. In both cases, Xe irradiation leads to the evolution of similar microstructures. Our results point to the pivotal role of nucleation in the evolution of the microstructure under the condition of ion implantation.

Traffic engineered NoC for streaming applications

Streaming applications demand hard bandwidth and throughput guarantees in a multiprocessor environment amidst resource competing processes. We present a Label Switching based Network-on-Chip (LS-NoC) motivated by throughput guarantees offered by bandwidth reservation. Label switching is a packet relaying technique in which individual packets carry route information in the form of labels. A centralized LS-NoC Management framework engineers traffic into Quality of Service (QoS) guaranteed routes. LS-NoC caters to the requirements of streaming applications where communication channels are fixed over the lifetime of the application. The proposed NoC framework inherently supports heterogeneous and ad hoc system-on-chips. The LS-NoC can be used in conjunction with conventional best effort NoC as a QoS guaranteed communication network or as a replacement to the conventional NoC. A multicast, broadcast capable label switched router for the LS-NoC has been designed. A 5 port, 256 bit data bus, 4 bit label router occupies 0.431 mm(2) in 130 nm and delivers peak bandwidth of 80 Gbits/s per link at 312.5 MHz. Bandwidth and latency guarantees of LS-NoC have been demonstrated on traffic from example streaming applications and on constant and variable bit rate traffic patterns. LS-NoC was found to have a competitive AreaxPower/Throughput figure of merit with state-of-the-art NoCs providing QoS. Circuit switching with link sharing abilities and support for asynchronous operation make LS-NoC a desirable choice for QoS servicing in chip multiprocessors. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. O outro e a transcendência : na parábola do Bom Samaritano (Lc 10, 25-37)

Resumen: Neste estudo, procuramos definir o sentido da corporeidade em Entralgo, relacionando-o com o pensamento de Lévinas. Segundo Entralgo, o corpo humano era um microcosmos integrado num cosmos. Assim, o corpo é i único objecto do Universo, do qual temos um duplo conhecimento não de fora, como também temos a sua percepção a partir de dentro. Porém, segundo Lévinas, a corporeidade é a expressão do Rosto do Outro, referindo- se como uma prefiguração do Outro, que tem o seu epílogo na parábola do Bom Samaritano. Há, na verdade, uma relação de aproximação antropológica entre o sentido do corpo como forma de manifestar o Outro. Em ti e por ti, tu eras uma pessoa, mas sendo tu uma pessoa, podendo e devendo Eu ver-te e tratar-te como tal pessoa. Os dois pensadores apresentam uma referência em relação à pessoas. Segundo Lévinas a pessoa será responsabilidade.

Evaluación de dosis de fertilizante mineral NPK y densidades de siembra para incrementar la producción de semilla en el cultivo del tomate (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill) cv. TY-13 bajo condiciones de riego en el valle de Sébaco, Matagalpa 2003-2004

Se evaluaron cinco dosis de fertilizantes y tres densidades de siembra para producir semilla de tomate, en vista de suprimir mayor volumen de alimento y obtener semilla de calidad. El ensayo se estableció en el Valle de Sébaco, periodo comprendido de noviembre 2003 a marzo 2004, el Valle se situa en una planicie con precipitaciones anuales de 800 mm y temperaturas entre 22°C y 35°C, los suelos son arcillosos, drenados con un contenido alto de M.O. el diseño utilizado fue un (B.C.A) evaluando variables de crecimiento, rendimiento agronómico y de la semilla calidad I, la germinación de la semilla producida y se realizo un análisis económico para determinar la rentabilidad de los tratamientos. Los resultados evidencian que la dosis 517.2 kg ha-1 de NPK obtiene las mayores alturas con 69.91 cm y con un diámetro de 14.40 mm. La mejor densidad fue 33,333 plantas ha-1 con 67.58 cm de altura de planta. En el número de frutos la mejor combinación fue 387.9 kgha-1 * 33,333 plantas ha-1 con 350,209 frutos ha-1. En el peso kg ha-1 la dosis 387.9 kg ha-1 obtiene 36,948 kg ha-1 y la mejor densidad 33,333 plantas ha-1 con 37,809 kg ha1. El rendimiento de la semilla la mejor combinación fue 387.9 kg ha-1 * 33,333 plantas ha-1 con 151.9 kg ha -1 y el mejor porcentaje de germinación se obtuvo con 258.6 kg ha-1 con 88.6% y con densidad de 33,333 plantas ha-1 con 88.1%. La mayor relación valor costo lo obtiene la combinación 387.9 kg ha-1 * 33,333 plantas ha-1 con $ 75.23 por cada dólar invertido.

Evaluación de rendimiento del grano de café (Coffea arabica L.) bajo la influencia de diferentes manejos agroforestales en Masatepe, Nicaragua

El presente trabajo de investigación se realizó en el Municipio de Masatepe, departamento de Masaya, Nicaragua se establecieron en el año 2000 dos repeticiones en el Centro de Capacitación y Servicios Regional del Café del pac í fico sur Nicaragua (Jardín Botánico) de la Unión Nicaragüense de cafetaleros (UNICAFE), y una tercera repetición en áreas del Centro Experimental de Campos Azules (CECA) del INTA, con el propósito de evaluar la Producción y el Rendimiento del grano de café bajo la influencia de diferentes manejos agroforestales. Se estu diaron 14 tratamientos distribuidos aleatoriamente en un diseño de Bloques Completos al Azar en parcelas divididas. Un Primer Factor de estudio compuesto por árboles leguminosos y no leguminosos ( Inga laurina, Simarouba glauca, Samanea saman, Tabebuia rose a ) y una parcela a pleno sol distribuidos en las parcelas grandes; un Segundo Factor de estudios compuesto por niveles de insumos (orgánico extensivo, orgánico intensivo, convencional con insumo moderados, convencional con alto insumo); distribuidos en las subparcelas. Se midieron y evaluaron las variables número de frutos en una libra, granos flotados (%), granos verdes(%), granos secos(%), granos brocados(%), granos chasparreado(%), libras uva por quintal oro, libras oro por fanega uva, fanega uva por qui ntal oro, kilogramos oro hectárea, quintales oro por hectárea. No s e encontraron diferencias significativas entre los diferentes tipos de sombra (exceptuando el ciclo 2002) favorables al tratamiento compuesto por Simaruba glauca + Tabebuia rosea con un ren dimiento de 1384.41 kg. ha - 1 grano oro; el mismo comportamiento estadístico se tuvo en los niveles de insumo siendo superior el Alto Convencional con 1334.37 kg. ha - 1 grano oro en el ciclo 2004/2005, mientras en el ciclo 2005/2006 se obtuvo diferencias sig nificativas en el factor tipo de sombra para las variables nú m er o de frutos por libras alcanzando pleno sol unos 333.66 frutos; granos flotados (4.33 % para el tratamiento S. glauca + T. rocea y Samanea saman + T. rocea con el menor porcentaje) y granos c hasparreado (2.83 % para el tratamiento de S. saman + Inga laurina ). Entre los niveles de insumo para este ciclo no mostró diferencia mínima significativa, así como en la interacción entre los factores de estudio
