Influence of surface texture and roughness parameters on friction and transfer layer formation during sliding of aluminium pin on steel plate

Surface texture of harder mating surfaces plays an important role during sliding against softer materials and hence the importance of characterizing the surfaces in terms of roughness parameters. In the present investigation, basic studies were conducted using inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester to understand the surface texture effect of hard surfaces on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. A tribological couple made of a super purity aluminium pin against steel plate was used in the tests. Two surface parameters of steel plates, namely roughness and texture, were varied in the tests. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction along with its two components, namely, the adhesion and plowing, are controlled by the surface texture and are independent of surface roughness (R-a). Among the various surface roughness parameters, the average or the mean slope of the profile was found to explain the variations best. Under lubricated conditions, stick-slip phenomena was observed, the amplitude of which depends on the plowing component of friction. The presence of stick-slip motion under lubricated conditions could be attributed to the molecular deformation of the lubricant component confined between asperities. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. Critical earthquake input power spectral density function models for engineering structures

The problem of determining optimal power spectral density models for earthquake excitation which satisfy constraints on total average power, zero crossing rate and which produce the highest response variance in a given linear system is considered. The solution to this problem is obtained using linear programming methods. The resulting solutions are shown to display a highly deterministic structure and, therefore, fail to capture the stochastic nature of the input. A modification to the definition of critical excitation is proposed which takes into account the entropy rate as a measure of uncertainty in the earthquake loads. The resulting problem is solved using calculus of variations and also within linear programming framework. Illustrative examples on specifying seismic inputs for a nuclear power plant and a tall earth dam are considered and the resulting solutions are shown to be realistic.

The seven-membered heterocyclic ring adopts a boat conformation flattened at the nitroso end of the ring. The substituent phenyl rings occupy pseudo-axial positions and the nitroso group is coplanar with the C(2), N(1), C(7) plane of the central ring. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular N-H...O and weak C-H...O hydrogen bonds.

A graphics package has been developed to display the main chain torsion angles phi, psi (phi, Psi); (Ramachandran angles) in a protein of known structure. In addition, the package calculates the Ramachandran angles at the central residue in the stretch of three amino acids having specified the flanking residue types. The package displays the Ramachandran angles along with a detailed analysis output. This software is incorporated with all the protein structures available in the Protein Databank.

Synthesis and Properties of a Novel (Main-Chain)– (Side-Chain) Polymeric Peroxide

A novel (main-chain)-(side-chain) vinyl polyperoxide, poly(dipentene peroxide)(PDP), an alternating copolymer of dipentene (DP) and oxygen, has been synthesized by thermal oxidative polymerization of DP. The PDP was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, DSC, TGA, and EI-MS studies. The overall activation energies of the degradation from Kissinger’s method were 28 and 33 kcal/mol, respectively, for the endocyclic and acyclic peroxide units. The side-chain peroxy groups were found to be thermally more stable than the main chain. Above 45°C the rate of polymerization increases sharply at a particular instant showing an “autoacceleration” with the formation of knee point. In vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo osseointergration properties of compression-molded HDPE-HA-Al2O3 hybrid biocomposites

The aim of this study was to investigate the in vivo biocompatibility in terms of healing of long segmental bone defect in rabbit model as well as in vitro cytotoxicity of eluates of compression-molded High density polyethylene (HDPE)hydroxyapatite (HA)-aluminum oxide (Al2O3) composite-based implant material. Based on the physical property in terms of modulus and strength properties, as reported in our recent publication, HDPE-40 wt % HA and HDPE-20 wt % HA-20 wt % Al2O3 hybrid composites were used for biocompatibility assessment. Osteoblasts cells were cultured in conditioned media, which contains varying amount of composite eluate (0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 wt %). In vitro, the eluates did not exhibit any significant negative impact on proliferation, mineralization or on morphology of human osteoblast cells. In vivo, the histological assessment revealed neobone formation at the bone/implant interface, characterized by the presence of osteoid and osteoblasts. The observation of osteoclastic activity indicates the process of bone remodeling. No inflammation to any noticeable extent was observed at the implantation site. Overall, the combination of in vitro and in vivo results are suggestive of potential biomedical application of compression-molded HDPE- 20 wt % HA- 20 wt % Al2O3 composites to heal long segmental bone defects without causing any toxicity of bone cells.

Experimental study on two-phase gas-liquid flow patterns at normal and reduced gravity conditions

Experimental studies have been performed for horizontal two-phase air-water flows at normal and reduced gravity conditions in a square cross-section channel. The experiments at reduced gravity are conducted on board the Russian IL-76 reduced gravity airplane. Four flow patterns, namely bubble, slug, slug-annular transition and annular flows, are observed depending on the liquid and gas superficial velocities at both conditions. Semi-theoretical Weber number model is developed to include the shape influence on the slug-annular transition. It is shown that its prediction is in reasonable agreement with the experimental slug-annular transition under both conditions. For the case of two-phase gas-liquid flow with large value of the Froude number, the drift-flux model can predict well the observed boundary between bubble and slug flows.

Influencia de cultivos antecesores y métodos de control sobre la cenosis de malezas, crecimiento, desarrollo y rendimiento del maíz (Zea mays L.) var. H-503

Se realizó un estudio a partir del 13 de abril de 1989, con rotación de cultivos y diferentes métodos de control de malezas en el cultivo del maíz, en predios de la Hacienda Las Mercedes, ubicada en el departamento de Managua, sobre un suelo de textura franco-arenoso. Le siembra se efectuó el 17 de abril de 1989; utilizando un diseño de parcelas divididas con cuatro replicas siendo el factor "A" el cultivo antecesor: sorgo y soya y el factor "B" los métodos de control de malezas: metolachlor (pre-emergente) 2 limpia mecánica en período crítico y limpia mecánica periódica cada 8 días hasta Cierre de calle. Los objetivos planteados fueron determinar el efecto de los cultivos antecesor y diferentes métodos de control de malezas sobre la dinámica de las malezas, crecimiento, desarrollo y rendimiento del cultivo del maíz. Los resultados obtenidos reflejan que el cultivo antecesor soya y el control período crítico presentan los mejores resultados sobre la abundancia de malezas. En ambos casos (rotación y control), la maleza de mayor abundancia fue R. cochinchinensis, observándose más individuos cuando le antecedía sorgo y cuando se aplicó metolachlor (pre-emergente) que permitió una mayor biomasa de malezas al momento de le cosecha. La cobertura en cultivos antecesores presentó un comportamiento similar, debido a que en ambos casos las malezas predominantes fueron de la misma especie, mientras que la mayor biomasa se logra en el cultivo antecesor sorgo. Por otra parte la diversidad en ambos factores presentó comportamiento similar.

Resumen: Nuestro trabajo aborda, desde una perspectiva pragmática, la utilización del tópico del ajedrez como imago mundi en la traducción nacida en el marco del vasto proyecto cultural de Alfonso el Sabio, El Libro de los juegos, o Libro del ajedrez, dados y tablas (entre 1251 y 1283) y el Ludus Sacc(h)orum o Juego de Ajedrez del lombardo Jacopo De Cessolis (entre 1300-1330) en su primera versión española, realizada por el Licenciado Reyna en 1549. En la traducción de los textos orientales que sirven de “textos de partida” la estrategia del Scriptorium alfonsí es doble: casi literal en lo eminentemente didascálico e interpretativo en lo simbólico haciéndolo funcional a su intento de legitimación de la sociedad estamental que él representa como cúspide. La imago mundi del ajedrez se articula con la totalidad del orden diseñado por el conjunto de su obra jurídica, histórica y científica. Por otra parte, tanto el texto de De Cessolis cuanto la versión castellana del ignoto licenciado Martín Reyna pertenecen a la tradición medieval del “ajedrez moralizado”: la retórica del texto es un continuo discurrir de exempla moralizantes, en los que a los trebejos se asignan vicios y virtudes propios de un estado u oficio, y la imagen de mundo que se representa es la “batalla del humano linaje” por la movilidad, frente al inmovilismo del siglo XIII
