Oligocene to Quaternary sediments were recovered from the Antarctic continental margin in the eastern Weddell Sea during ODP Leg 113 and Polarstern expedition ANT-VI. Clay mineral composition and grain size distribution patterns are useful for distinguishing sediments that have been transported by ocean currents from those that were ice-rafted. This, in turn, has assisted in providing insights about the changing late Paleogene to Neogene sedimentary environment as the cryosphere developed in Antarctica. During the middle Oligocene, increasing glacial conditions on the continent are indicated by the presence of glauconite sands, that are interpreted to have formed on the shelf and then transported down the continental slope by advancing glaciers or as a result of sea-level lowering. The dominance of illite and a relatively high content of chlorite suggest predominantly physical weathering conditions on the continent. The high content of biogenic opal from the late Miocene to the late Pliocene resulted from increased upwelling processes at the continental margin due to increased wind strength related to global cooling. Partial melting of the ice-sheet occurred during an early Pliocene climate optimum as is shown by an increasing supply of predominantly current-derived sediment with a low mean grain size and peak values of smectite. Primary productivity decreased at ~ 3 Ma due to the development of a permanent sea-ice cover close to the continent. Late Pleistocene sediments are characterized by planktonic foraminifers and biogenic opal, concentrated in distinct horizons reflecting climatic cycles. Isotopic analysis of AT. pachyderma produced a stratigraphy which resulted in a calculated sedimentation rate of 1 cm/k.y. during the Pleistocene. Primary productivity was highest during the last three interglacial maxima and decreased during glacial episodes as a result of increasing sea-ice coverage.

Very fine quartz sand was examined from Paleogene and Neogene sediments of ODP Sites 693, 694, 695, 696, and 697 to determine their grain roundness using Fourier analysis and SEM surface texture characteristics. The objective of this study was to identify grain roundness and surface texture characteristics unique to East (Site 693) and West (Sites 695, 696, and 697) Antarctica and to glacial regimes. Once identified, these distinguishing features could then be used to determine changes in source area and glacial conditions in the central Weddell Sea Basin (Site 694). Three end members of very fine quartz sand are recognized in the Oligocene to Pleistocene sediments of the Weddell Sea: angular, rounded, and intermediate. End member 1 (angular) consists of extremely angular grains with numerous fracture textures. Previous investigations suggested that these sands are derived from crystalline rocks that fractured during formation or deformation and/or were exposed to weathering by ice. In this study, however, the correlation of angularity with ice activity is problematical as the most angular sands were recovered in the lower Oligocene sediments of the South Orkney Microcontinent, a period of temperate climatic conditions. End member 3 (rounded) consists of rounded grains with chemically and mechanically produced surface textures. These sands are presumed to be derived from the Beacon-type rocks in East Antarctica and the sedimentary deposits of the Northern Antarctic Peninsula. End member 2 (intermediate) grains display crystalline nodes and grain embayments. They are thought to be derived from felsic intrusives, East Antarctic quartzites, basement metamorphics of the South Orkney Microcontinent, and/or the Andean intrusive series of West Antarctica. Unfortunately, no features unique to either the East or West Antarctic sediment sources or to glacial conditions could be isolated. Therefore, the objective of determining provenance changes and sediment erosion and transport mechanisms could not be achieved using this approach.

In the geosphere, germanium (Ge) has a chemical behavior close to that of silicon (Si), and Ge commonly substitutes for Si (in small proportions) in silicates. Studying the evolution of the respective proportions of Ge and Si through time allows us to better constrain the global Si cycle. The marine inventory of Ge present as dissolved germanic acid is facing two main sinks known through the study of present sediments: 1) incorporation into diatom frustules and transfer to sediments by these "shuttles", 2) capture of Ge released to pore water through frustule dissolution by authigenic mineral phases forming within reducing sediments. Our goals are to determine whether such a bio-induced transfer of Ge is also achieved by radiolarian and whether Ge could be trapped directly from seawater into authigenic phases with no intervention of opal-secreting organisms (shuttles). To this end, we studied two Paleozoic radiolarite formations and geological formations dated of Devonian, Jurassic and Cretaceous, deposited under more or less drastic redox conditions. Our results show that the Ge/Si values observed for these radiolarites are close to (slightly above) those measured from modern diatoms and sponges. In addition, our results confirm what is observed with some present-day reducing sediments: the ancient sediments that underwent reducing depositional conditions are authigenically enriched in Ge. Furthermore, it is probable that at least a part of the authigenic Ge came directly from seawater. The recurrence and extent (through time and space) of anoxic conditions affecting sea bottoms have been quite important through the geological times; consequently, the capture of Ge by reducing sediments must have impacted Ge distribution and in turn, the evolution of the seawater Ge/Si ratio.

Unusually well preserved Cretaceous radiolarians are observed in the subsurface sections from two drilled sites in the Weddell Sea collected during Leg 113 of the Ocean Drilling Program. Radiolarians from the lithified calcareous chalk of Hole 689B represent the first Campanian-Maestrichtian assemblage which is characterized by abundant Cromyodruppa Iconcentrica, Dictyomitra multicostata, and Protostichocapsa stocki. Abundant Pseudodictyomitra pentacolaensis and Diacanthocapsa sp. 1, on the other hand, are the main constituents of the assemblage from the latest Aptian/earliest Albian diatomite of Hole 693B. These represent the oldest and the highest-latitude reported radiolarian occurrences from the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic Ocean. The assemblages are marked by their low diversity and an absence of low- to mid-latitude zonal indices.

The connection between the activity of the gonadotropic cells of the hypophysis and the neurosecretion in the pre-optico neuro-hypophysial system in different groups of vertebrates has been examined by many authors. It has been established that in many species there exists some kind of synchronism between the sexual cycle and the cellular activity of neurosecretion, a fact that has led to the prevailing idea that gonadotropic activity in the hypophysis is regulated by the hypothalamus. This paper summarises the results of experiments made in this direction on Cyclostomata. The materials for research came from adult individuals of Eudontomyson danfordi Regan taken from the rivers Somes-Rece and Ivo (Harghita district) at different times of the year.

The surface structures of the Si(113)-(1 X 1), Si(113)-(3 X 1) and Si(113)-(3 X 2) have been studied theoretically by means of an ab initio quantum chemical CNDO method. We address not only the importance of the surface energy but also the energy minimization and the barrier height in the different structural conversion. We found that (1) the relaxed Si(113)-(1 X 1) structure. (2) the Si(113)-(3 X 1) close to the Si(113) Ranke (3 X 1)-2 model; (3) the atomic positions of Si(113)-(3 X 2) corrugated arrangement. We present photoelectron spectroscopic and low energy electron diffraction measurements of water adsorption on flat Si samples of the orientations (001), (115), (113), (5,5,12) and (112) as well as on curved samples covering continuously the ranges (001)-(117) and (113)-(5,5,12)-(112). On all orientations, water adsorption is dissociative (OH and H) and non-destructive. On Si(001) the sticking coefficient S and the saturation coverage Theta(sat) are largest. On Si(001) and for small miscuts in the [110]-azimuth, S is constant nearly up to saturation which proves that the kinetics involves a weakly bound mobile precursor state. For (001)-vicinals with high miscut angles (9-13 degrees), the step structure breaks down, the precursor mobility is affected and the adsorption kinetics changed. On (115), (113), (5,5,12) and (112), the values of S and Theta(sat) are smaller which indicates that not all sites are able to dissociate and bind water. For (113) the shape of the adsorption curves Theta versus exposure shows the existence of two adsorption processes, one with mobile precursor kinetics and one with Langmuir-like kinetics. On (5,5,12), two processes with mobile precursor kinetics are observed which are ascribed to adsorption on different surface regions within the large surface unit cell. From the corresponding values of S and Theta(sat), data for structure models are deduced. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Surface reconstructions on Si(113) induced by dissociated hydrogen adsorption have been studied using low energy electron diffraction (LEED). It has been found that: (1) at 300 K and 80 K temperatures, with the increase of hydrogen coverage on the surface, the (3 x 1) phase transferred continuously into a hydrogen saturated (1 x 1)-2H phase; (2) flashing of the (1 x 1)-2H surface at about 1100 degrees C resulted in a complete new phase of(1 x 3) and further annealing of the sample at 1250 degrees C gave back the starting surface of (3 x 1); (3) saturated hydrogen adsorption at a sample temperature of 700 degrees C resulted in a stable new phase of(1 x 2)-H and further saturation doses of hydrogen at other temperatures below 700 degrees C did not change the (1 x 2) LEED pattern; (4) annealing of the (I x 2)-H surface in the same manner as (2) gave similar results.
