ZnO nanoflowers were synthesized by the hydrothermal process at an optimized growth temperature of 200 ◦C and a growth/reaction time of 3 h. As-prepared ZnO nanoflowers were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV–visible and Raman spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction and Raman studies reveal that the as-synthesized flower-like ZnO nanostructures are highly crystalline with a hexagonal wurtzite phase preferentially oriented along the (1 0 1 1) plane. The average length (234–347 nm) and diameter (77–106 nm) of the nanorods constituting the flower-like structure are estimated using scanning electron microscopy studies. The band gap of ZnO nanoflowers is estimated as 3.23 eV, the lowering of band gap is attributed to the flower-like surface morphology and microstructure of ZnO. Room temperature photoluminescence spectrum shows a strong UV emission peak at 392 nm, with a suppressed visible emission related to the defect states, indicating the defect free formation of ZnO nanoflowers that can be potentially used for UV light-emitting devices. The suppressed Raman bands at 541 and 583 cm−1 related to defect states in ZnO confirms that the ZnO nanoflowers here obtained have a reduced presence of defects

ZnO micro particles in the range 0.4-0.6 μm were synthesized by microwave irradiation method. The XRD analysis reveals that the sample is in the wurtzite phase with orientation along the (101) plane. SAED pattern of the sample reveals the single crystalline nature of the micro grains. TEM images show the formation of cylindrical shaped ZnO micro structures with hexagonal faces. The optical phonon modes were slightly shifted in the Raman spectrum,attributed to the presence of various crystalline defects and laser induced local heating at the grain boundaries. A broad transmission profile was observed in the FTIR spectrum from 1550-3400 cm-1 which falls in the atmospheric transparency window region. PL spectrum centered at 500 nm with a broad band in the region 420-570 nm comprised of different emission peaks attributed to transition between defect levels. The resurgence of the enteric pathogen Vibrio cholerae, the causative organism of epidemic cholera, remains a major health problem in many developing countries like India. The southern Indian state of Kerala is endemic to cholera. The outbreaks of cholera follow a seasonal pattern in regions of endemicity. Marine aquaculture settings and mangrove environments of Kerala serve as reservoirs for V. cholerae. The non-O1/non-O139 environmental isolates of V. cholerae with incomplete ‘virulence casette’ are to be dealt with caution as they constitute a major reservoir of diverse virulence genes in the marine environment and play a crucial role in pathogenicity and horizontal gene transfer. The genes coding cholera toxin are borne on, and can be infectiously transmitted by CTXΦ, a filamentous lysogenic vibriophages. Temperate phages can provide crucial virulence and fitness factors affecting cell metabolism, bacterial adhesion, colonization, immunity, antibiotic resistance and serum resistance. The present study was an attempt to screen the marine environments like aquafarms and mangroves of coastal areas of Alappuzha and Cochin, Kerala for the presence of lysogenic V. cholerae, to study their pathogenicity and also gene transfer potential. Phenotypic and molecular methods were used for identification of isolates as V. cholerae. The thirty one isolates which were Gram negative, oxidase positive, fermentative, with or without gas production on MOF media and which showed yellow coloured colonies on TCBS (Thiosulfate Citrate Bile salt Sucrose) agar were segregated as vibrios. Twenty two environmental V. cholerae strains of both O1 and non- O1/non-O139 serogroups on induction with mitomycin C showed the presence of lysogenic phages. They produced characteristic turbid plaques in double agar overlay assay using the indicator strain V. cholerae El Tor MAK 757. PCR based molecular typing with primers targeting specific conserved sequences in the bacterial genome, demonstrated genetic diversity among these lysogen containing non-O1 V. cholerae . Polymerase chain reaction was also employed as a rapid screening method to verify the presence of 9 virulence genes namely, ctxA, ctxB, ace, hlyA, toxR, zot,tcpA, ninT and nanH, using gene specific primers. The presence of tcpA gene in ALPVC3 was alarming, as it indicates the possibility of an epidemic by accepting the cholera. Differential induction studies used ΦALPVC3, ΦALPVC11, ΦALPVC12 and ΦEKM14, underlining the possibility of prophage induction in natural ecosystems, due to abiotic factors like antibiotics, pollutants, temperature and UV. The efficiency of induction of prophages varied considerably in response to the different induction agents. The growth curve of lysogenic V. cholerae used in the study drastically varied in the presence of strong prophage inducers like antibiotics and UV. Bacterial cell lysis was directly proportional to increase in phage number due to induction. Morphological characterization of vibriophages by Transmission Electron Microscopy revealed hexagonal heads for all the four phages. Vibriophage ΦALPVC3 exhibited isometric and contractile tails characteristic of family Myoviridae, while phages ΦALPVC11 and ΦALPVC12 demonstrated the typical hexagonal head and non-contractile tail of family Siphoviridae. ΦEKM14, the podophage was distinguished by short non-contractile tail and icosahedral head. This work demonstrated that environmental parameters can influence the viability and cell adsorption rates of V. cholerae phages. Adsorption studies showed 100% adsorption of ΦALPVC3 ΦALPVC11, ΦALPVC12 and ΦEKM14 after 25, 30, 40 and 35 minutes respectively. Exposure to high temperatures ranging from 50ºC to 100ºC drastically reduced phage viability. The optimum concentration of NaCl required for survival of vibriophages except ΦEKM14 was 0.5 M and that for ΦEKM14 was 1M NaCl. Survival of phage particles was maximum at pH 7-8. V. cholerae is assumed to have existed long before their human host and so the pathogenic clones may have evolved from aquatic forms which later colonized the human intestine by progressive acquisition of genes. This is supported by the fact that the vast majority of V. cholerae strains are still part of the natural aquatic environment. CTXΦ has played a critical role in the evolution of the pathogenicity of V. cholerae as it can transmit the ctxAB gene. The unusual transformation of V. cholerae strains associated with epidemics and the emergence of V. cholera O139 demonstrates the evolutionary success of the organism in attaining greater fitness. Genetic changes in pathogenic V. cholerae constitute a natural process for developing immunity within an endemically infected population. The alternative hosts and lysogenic environmental V. cholerae strains may potentially act as cofactors in promoting cholera phage ‘‘blooms’’ within aquatic environments, thereby influencing transmission of phage sensitive, pathogenic V. cholerae strains by aquatic vehicles. Differential induction of the phages is a clear indication of the impact of environmental pollution and global changes on phage induction. The development of molecular biology techniques offered an accessible gateway for investigating the molecular events leading to genetic diversity in the marine environment. Using nucleic acids as targets, the methods of fingerprinting like ERIC PCR and BOX PCR, revealed that the marine environment harbours potentially pathogenic group of bacteria with genetic diversity. The distribution of virulence associated genes in the environmental isolates of V. cholerae provides tangible material for further investigation. Nucleotide and protein sequence analysis alongwith protein structure prediction aids in better understanding of the variation inalleles of same gene in different ecological niche and its impact on the protein structure for attaining greater fitness of pathogens. The evidences of the co-evolution of virulence genes in toxigenic V. cholerae O1 from different lineages of environmental non-O1 strains is alarming. Transduction studies would indicate that the phenomenon of acquisition of these virulence genes by lateral gene transfer, although rare, is not quite uncommon amongst non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae and it has a key role in diversification. All these considerations justify the need for an integrated approach towards the development of an effective surveillance system to monitor evolution of V. cholerae strains with epidemic potential. Results presented in this study, if considered together with the mechanism proposed as above, would strongly suggest that the bacteriophage also intervenes as a variable in shaping the cholera bacterium, which cannot be ignored and hinting at imminent future epidemics.

Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometrie (Shearografie) ist eine speckle-interferometrische Messmethode und zeichnet sich durch die ganzflächige, berührungslose Arbeitsweise, hohe räumliche Auflösung und hohe Messempfindlichkeit aus. Diese Dissertation beinhaltet die neue bzw. weitere Entwicklung der Shearografie zur qualitativen Schwingungsbeobachtung und zur quantitativen Schwingungsmessung. Für die qualitative Schwingungsbeobachtung in Echtzeit werden die Optimierung des Zeitmittelungsverfahrens und die neue entwickelte Online-Charakterisierung von Streifenmustern mit statistischen Verfahren vorgestellt. Auf dieser Basis können sowohl eine genaue Fehlstellen-Detektion bei der zerstörungsfreien Materialprüfung als auch eine präzise Resonanzuntersuchung zeitsparend und vollautomatisch durchgeführt werden. Für die quantitative Schwingungsmessung wird eine sog. dynamische Phasenschiebe-Technik neu entwickelt, welche durch die Einführung eines synchron zum Objekt schwingenden Referenzspiegels realisiert wird. Mit dieser Technik ermöglicht das Zeitmittelungsverfahren die Amplituden und Phasen einer Objektschwingung quantitativ zu ermitteln. Auch eine Weiterentwicklung des stroboskopischen Verfahrens in Kombination mit zeitlicher Phasenverschiebung wird in der Arbeit präsentiert, womit der gesamte Prozess der Schwingungsmessung und -rekonstruktion beschleunigt und automatisch durchgeführt wird. Zur Bestimmung des Verschiebungsfeldes aus den gemessenen Amplituden und Phasen des Verformungsgradienten stellt diese Arbeit auch eine Weiterentwicklung des Summationsverfahrens vor. Das Verfahren zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass die Genauigkeit des ermittelten Verschiebungsfelds unabhängig von der Sheargröße ist und gleichzeitig das praktische Problem - Unstetigkeit - gelöst wird. Eine quantitative Messung erfordert eine genaue Kalibrierung der gesamten Messkette. Ein auf dem Least-Square-Verfahren basierendes Kalibrierverfahren wird in der Arbeit zur Kalibrierung der statischen und dynamischen Phasenverschiebung vorgestellt. Auch die Ermittelung der Sheargröße mit Hilfe der 1D- bzw. 2D-Kreuz-Korrelation wird präsentiert. Zum Schluss wurde die gesamte Entwicklung durch eine Vergleichsmessung mit einem handelsüblichen Scanning-Laser-Doppler-Vibrometer experimentell verifiziert.

Im Rahmen dieser interdisziplinären Doktorarbeit wird eine (Al)GaN Halbleiteroberflächenmodifikation untersucht, mit dem Ziel eine verbesserte Grenzfläche zwischen dem Material und dem Dielektrikum zu erzeugen. Aufgrund von Oberflächenzuständen zeigen GaN basierte HEMT Strukturen üblicherweise große Einsatzspannungsverschiebungen. Bisher wurden zur Grenzflächenmodifikation besonders die Entfernung von Verunreinigungen wie Sauerstoff oder Kohlenstoff analysiert. Die nasschemischen Oberflächenbehandlungen werden vor der Abscheidung des Dielektrikums durchgeführt, wobei die Kontaminationen jedoch nicht vollständig entfernt werden können. In dieser Arbeit werden Modifikationen der Oberfläche in wässrigen Lösungen, in Gasen sowie in Plasma analysiert. Detaillierte Untersuchungen zeigen, dass die inerte (0001) c-Ebene der Oberfläche kaum reagiert, sondern hauptsächlich die weniger polaren r- und m- Ebenen. Dies kann deutlich beim Defektätzen sowie bei der thermischen Oxidation beobachtet werden. Einen weiteren Ansatz zur Oberflächenmodifikation stellen Plasmabehandlungen dar. Hierbei wird die Oberflächenterminierung durch eine nukleophile Substitution mit Lewis Basen, wie Fluorid, Chlorid oder Oxid verändert, wodurch sich die Elektronegativitätsdifferenz zwischen dem Metall und dem Anion im Vergleich zur Metall-Stickstoff Bindung erhöht. Dies führt gleichzeitig zu einer Erhöhung der Potentialdifferenz des Schottky Kontakts. Sauerstoff oder Fluor besitzen die nötige thermische Stabilität um während einer Silicium-nitridabscheidung an der (Al)GaN Oberfläche zu bleiben. Sauerstoffvariationen an der Oberfläche werden in NH3 bei 700°C, welches die nötigen Bedingungen für die Abscheidung darstellen, immer zu etwa 6-8% reduziert – solche Grenzflächen zeigen deswegen auch keine veränderten Ergebnisse in Einsatzspannungsuntersuchungen. Im Gegensatz dazu zeigt die fluorierte Oberfläche ein völlig neues elektrisches Verhalten: ein neuer dominanter Oberflächendonator mit einem schnellen Trapping und Detrapping Verhalten wird gefunden. Das Energieniveau dieses neuen, stabilen Donators liegt um ca. 0,5 eV tiefer in der Bandlücke als die ursprünglichen Energieniveaus der Oberflächenzustände. Physikalisch-chemische Oberflächen- und Grenzflächenuntersuchung mit XPS, AES oder SIMS erlauben keine eindeutige Schlussfolgerung, ob das Fluor nach der Si3N4 Abscheidung tatsächlich noch an der Grenzfläche vorhanden ist, oder einfach eine stabilere Oberflächenrekonstruktion induziert wurde, bei welcher es selbst nicht beteiligt ist. In beiden Fällen ist der neue Donator in einer Konzentration von 4x1013 at/cm-2 vorhanden. Diese Dichte entspricht einer Oberflächenkonzentration von etwa 1%, was genau an der Nachweisgrenze der spektroskopischen Methoden liegt. Jedoch werden die elektrischen Oberflächeneigenschaften durch die Oberflächenmodifikation deutlich verändert und ermöglichen eine potentiell weiter optimierbare Grenzfläche.

Three dimensional (3-D) integrated circuits can be fabricated by bonding previously processed device layers using metal-metal bonds that also serve as layer-to-layer interconnects. Bonded copper interconnects test structures were created by thermocompression bonding and the bond toughness was measured using the four-point test. The effects of bonding temperature, physical bonding and failure mechanisms were investigated. The surface effects on copper surface due to pre-bond clean (with glacial acetic acid) were also looked into. A maximum average bond toughness of approximately 35 J/m² was obtained bonding temperature 300 C.

We have discovered that the current protocols to assemble Au nanoparticles based on DNA hybridization do not work well with the small metal nanoparticles (e.g. 5 nm Au, 3.6 nm Pt and 3.2 nm Ru particles). Further investigations revealed the presence of strong interaction between the oligonucleotide backbone and the surface of the small metal nanoparticles. The oligonucleotides in this case are recumbent on the particle surface and are therefore not optimally oriented for hybridization. The nonspecific adsorption of oligonucleotides on small metal nanoparticles must be overcome before DNA hybridization can be accepted as a general assembly method. Two methods have been suggested as possible solutions to this problem. One is based on the use of stabilizer molecules which compete with the oligonucleotides for adsorption on the metal nanoparticle surface. Unfortunately, the reported success of this approach in small Au nanoparticles (using K₂BSPP) and Au films (using 6-mercapto-1-hexanol) could not be extended to the assembly of Pt and Ru nanoparticles by DNA hybridization. The second approach is to simply use larger metal particles. Indeed most reports on the DNA hybridization induced assembly of Au nanoparticles have made use of relatively large particles (>10 nm), hinting at a weaker non-specific interaction between the oligonucleotides and large Au nanoparticles. However, most current methods of nanoparticle synthesis are optimized to produce metal nanoparticles only within a narrow size range. We find that core-shell nanoparticles formed by the seeded growth method may be used to artificially enlarge the size of the metal particles to reduce the nonspecific binding of oligonucleotides. We demonstrate herein a core-shell assisted growth method to assemble Pt and Ru nanoparticles by DNA hybridization. This method involves firstly synthesizing approximately 16 nm core-shell Ag-Pt and 21 nm core-shell Au-Ru nanoparticles from 9.6 nm Ag seeds and 17.2 nm Au seeds respectively by the seed-mediated growth method. The core-shell nanoparticles were then functionalized by complementary thiolated oligonucleotides followed by aging in 0.2 M PBS buffer for 6 hours. The DNA hybridization induced bimetallic assembly of Pt and Ru nanoparticles could then be carried out in 0.3 M PBS buffer for 10 hours.

Magnetic nanoparticles attract increasing attention because of their current and potential biomedical applications, such as, magnetically targeted and controlled drug delivery, magnetic hyperthermia and magnetic extraction. Increased magnetization can lead to improved performance in targeting and retention in drug delivery and a higher efficiency in biomaterials extraction. We reported an approach to synthesize iron contained magnetic nanoparticles with high magnetization and good oxidation resistibility by pyrolysis of iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)[subscript 5]) in methane (CH[subscript 4]). Using the high reactivity of Fe nanoparticles, decomposition of CH[subscript 4] on the Fe nanoparticles leads to the formation of nanocrystalline iron carbides at a temperature below 260°C. Structural investigation indicated that the as-synthesized nanoparticles contained crystalline bcc Fe, iron carbides and spinel iron oxide. The Mössbauer and DSC results testified that the as-synthesized nanoparticle contained three crystalline iron carbide phases, which converted to Fe[subscript 3]C after a heat treatment. Surface analysis suggested that the as-synthesized and subsequently heated iron-iron carbide particles were coated by iron oxide, which originated from oxidization of surface Fe atoms. The heat-treated nanoparticles exhibited a magnetization of 160 emu/g, which is two times of that of currently used spinel iron oxide nanoparticles. After heating in an acidic solution with a pH value of 5 at 60°C for 20 h, the nanoparticles retained 90 percentage of the magnetization.

The study of granular material is of great interest to many researchers in both engineering and science communities. The importance of such a study derives from its complex rheological character and also its significant role in a wide range of industrial applications, such as coal, food, plastics, pharmaceutical, powder metallurgy and mineral processing. A number of recent reports have been focused on the physics of non-cohesive granular material submitted to vertical vibration in either experimental or theoretical approaches. Such a kind of system can be used to separate, mix and dry granular materials in industries. It exhibits different instability behaviour on its surface when under vertical vibration, for example, avalanching, surface fluidization and surface wave, and these phenomena have attracted particular interest of many researchers. However, its fundamental understanding of the instability mechanism is not yet well-understood. This paper is therefore to study the dynamics of granular motion in such a kind of system using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT), which allows the motion of a single tracer particle to be followed in a non-invasive way. Features of the solids motion such as cycle frequency and dispersion index were investigated via means of authors’ specially-written programmes. Regardless of the surface behaviour, particles are found to travel in rotational movement in horizontal plane. Particle cycle frequency is found to increase strongly with increasing vibration amplitude. Particle dispersion also increased strongly with vibration amplitude. Horizontal dispersion is observed to always exceed vertical dispersion.

Three terminal ‘dotted-I’ interconnect structures, with vias at both ends and an additional via in the middle, were tested under various test conditions. Mortalities (failures) were found in right segments with jL value as low as 1250 A/cm, and the mortality of a dotted-I segment is dependent on the direction and magnitude of the current in the adjacent segment. Some mortalities were also found in the right segments under a test condition where no failure was expected. Cu extrusion along the delaminated Cu/Si₃N₄ interface near the central via region was believed to cause the unexpected failures. From the time-to-failure (TTF), it is possible to quantify the Cu/Si₃N₄ interfacial strength and bonding energy. Hence, the demonstrated test methodology can be used to investigate the integrity of the Cu dual damascene processes. As conventionally determined critical jL values in two-terminal via-terminated lines cannot be directly applied to interconnects with branched segments, this also serves as a good methodology to identify the critical effective jL values for immortality.

Aunque gracias a la puesta en marcha de la Ley 100 de 1993 (...) en la última década se ha registrado un notable aumento del gasto público en salud, han crecido las contribuciones de los afiliados, se ha elevado la cobertura del aseguramiento al sistema de Seguridad Social y se ha mejorado la focalización de los subsidios, aún persisten inequidades en el aseguramiento por ingreso y en acceso y resultados de salud. Así lo advierte un estudio de la Facultad de Economía de la Universidad del Rosario realizado conjuntamente con la Asociación Colombiana de la Salud (ASSALUD), en el que se indica que lo más preocupante es la presencia de múltiples indicadores de problemas de calidad en la prestación de los servicios, el notable deterioro en la capacidad territorial para manejar la salud pública y el rezago en temas como mortalidad evitable, mortalidad materna y enfermedades transmitidas por vectores (agentes transmisores).(*) Según los directores de la investigación, Francisco Yepes, de ASSALUD, y Manuel Ramírez, de la Universidad del Rosario, los hallazgos del estudio arrojan dudas sobre la eficiencia de las reformas en algunos aspectos y revelan un serio desequilibrio entre unos incentivos financieros muy fuertes y unos incentivos por resultados de salud inexistentes, así como un importante fraccionamiento en la prestación de los servicios. “No hay una relación fuerte entre el notable aumento en el gasto de salud y los resultados que se han obtenido en éstos términos. La pregunta legítima ante esta situación es: ¿estamos obteniendo lo que deberíamos por cada peso adicional que hemos dedicado a la salud?”, agregan los investigadores. El proyecto de la Facultad de Economía del Rosario y ASSALUD arrancó en el año 2004 con la recolección de información y el análisis de la evidencia disponible sobre los resultados de las reformas al sistema de salud, con el fin de establecer en qué se ganó, en qué se perdió y qué problemas subsisten para contribuir a la formulación de las políticas públicas. En desarrollo del proyecto, se identificaron más de trescientas publicaciones para el período comprendido entre 1995 y 2005, de las cuales se seleccionaron aquellas que presentaban resultados de investigaciones que aportaban evidencias para estudiar el resultado de las reformas. La investigación, también se apoyó en en los Estudios Nacionales de Salud, las Encuestas de Calidad de Vida del DANE, la Encuesta de Demografía y Salud de Profamilia y las Cuentas Nacionales de Salud del Ministerio de la Protección Social. (...) Los investigadores lograron establecer, además, que la estrategia de la política de salud durante este período de tiempo consistía en lograr un aumento en el gasto público y privado en salud, para elevar el porcentaje de la población asegurada, lo cual debería implicar un mejoramiento en el acceso a los servicios de esta área y, finalmente, una mejora en las condiciones de salud de la población. Las primeras etapas (gasto y aseguramiento) se han cumplido con respuestas bastante exitosas, y en el tema del acceso se han logrado algunos efectos. Sin embargo, los resultados en el mejoramiento de la salud son muy dudosos, lo cual permite advertir que la prioridad de la política sanitaria en el futuro cercano es el mejoramiento de la calidad en la prestación de los servicios.(...)

El entorno empresarial actual ha llevado a las empresas a adoptar nuevas estrategias para ingresar a nuevos mercados, logrando ser competitivos y productivos. Una de esas estrategias es la creación de las redes empresariales, que permite a las empresas apoyarse en otras con las que tienen un objetivo común. La asociatividad se ha consolidado como la forma más sencilla y practica de alcanzar mercados nuevos sin incurrir en muchos gastos o riesgos, sin que ello implique que los riesgos o gastos desaparezcan, si disminuyen de forma significativa. Por otro lado, las empresas también buscan ser saludables, esto a través de la implementación de programas y la adopción de nuevos criterios que les permita ser más competitivas y la vez poder aportar a sus empleados, sus proveedores y la comunidad. Buscan ser organizaciones que destaquen los aspectos positivos en sus organizaciones y mejorar las relaciones en todos los niveles.
