An E-plane rectangular folded-waveguide slow-wave structure with metal grating on the broad wall of the waveguide along the direction of the electric field has been proposed and analyzed for the dispersion and interaction impedance characteristics through three dimensional electromagnetic modeling in CST Studio. The effects of the presence of grating on the bandwidth and interaction impedance are demonstrated.

Design of a dual band pass filter employing microstrip line with defected ground is presented in this paper. A dual band filter at 2.45GHz and 3.5GHz (covering WLAN and WiMAX) with 6% bandwidth has been designed at each frequency. Apertures in ground plane were used to improve the stop band rejection characteristics and coupling levels in the filter. Measured results of the experimental filter were compared against the simulation results for the purpose of validation.

Chronic recording of neural signals is indispensable in designing efficient brain machine interfaces and in elucidating human neurophysiology. The advent of multichannel microelectrode arrays has driven the need for electronics to record neural signals from many neurons. The dynamic range of the system is limited by background system noise which varies over time. We propose a neural amplifier in UMC 130 nm, 2P8M CMOS technology. It can be biased adaptively from 200 nA to 2 uA, modulating input referred noise from 9.92 uV to 3.9 uV. We also describe a low noise design technique which minimizes the noise contribution of the load circuitry. The amplifier can pass signal from 5 Hz to 7 kHz while rejecting input DC offsets at electrode-electrolyte interface. The bandwidth of the amplifier can be tuned by the pseudo-resistor for selectively recording low field potentials (LFP) or extra cellular action potentials (EAP). The amplifier achieves a mid-band voltage gain of 37 dB and minimizes the attenuation of the signal from neuron to the gate of the input transistor. It is used in fully differential configuration to reject noise of bias circuitry and to achieve high PSRR.

In this paper, we propose modulation diversity techniques for Spatial Modulation (SM) system using Complex Interleaved Orthogonal Design (CIOD). Specifically, we show that the standard SM scheme can achieve a transmit diversity order of two by using the CIOD meant for two transmit antenna system without incurring any additional system complexity or bandwidth requirement. Furthermore, we propose a low-complexity maximum likelihood detector for our CIOD based SM schemes by exploiting the structure of the CIOD. We show with our simulation results that the proposed schemes offer transmit diversity order of two and give a better symbol error rate performance than the conventional SM scheme.

Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems divide the available bandwidth into orthogonal subchannels and exploit multiuser diversity and frequency selectivity to achieve high spectral efficiencies. However, they require a significant amount of channel state feedback for scheduling and rate adaptation and are sensitive to feedback delays. We develop a comprehensive analysis for OFDMA system throughput in the presence of feedback delays as a function of the feedback scheme, frequency-domain scheduler, and rate adaptation rule. Also derived are expressions for the outage probability, which captures the inability of a subchannel to successfully carry data due to the feedback scheme or feedback delays. Our model encompasses the popular best-n and threshold-based feedback schemes and the greedy, proportional fair, and round-robin schedulers that cover a wide range of throughput versus fairness tradeoff. It helps quantify the different robustness of the schedulers to feedback overhead and delays. Even at low vehicular speeds, it shows that small feedback delays markedly degrade the throughput and increase the outage probability. Further, given the feedback delay, the throughput degradation depends primarily on the feedback overhead and not on the feedback scheme itself. We also show how to optimize the rate adaptation thresholds as a function of feedback delay.

We present a centralized integrated approach for: 1) enhancing the performance of an IEEE 802.11 infrastructure wireless local area network (WLAN), and 2) managing the access link that connects the WLAN to the Internet. Our approach, which is implemented on a standard Linux platform, and which we call ADvanced Wi-fi Internet Service EnhanceR (ADWISER), is an extension of our previous system WLAN Manager (WM). ADWISER addresses several infrastructure WLAN performance anomalies such as mixed-rate inefficiency, unfair medium sharing between simultaneous TCP uploads and downloads, and inefficient utilization of the Internet access bandwidth when Internet transfers compete with LAN-WLAN transfers, etc. The approach is via centralized queueing and scheduling, using a novel, configurable, cascaded packet queueing and scheduling architecture, with an adaptive service rate. In this paper, we describe the design of ADWISER and report results of extensive experimentation conducted on a hybrid testbed consisting of real end-systems and an emulated WLAN on Qualnet. We also present results from a physical testbed consisting of one access point (AP) and a few end-systems.

Mobile ad-hoc network is a wireless ad-hoc network with dynamic network topology. The Dynamicity, due to the random node movement, and scarcity of resources lead to a challenge in monitoring the nodes in a MANET. Monitoring the lack of resources (bandwidth, buffer, and energy), misbehavior, and mobility at node level remains, a challenge. In a MANET the proposed protocol uses both static as well as mobile agents, where the mobile agents migrate to different clusters of the zones respectively, collect the node status information periodically, and provide a high level information to the static agent (which resides at the central node) by analyzing the raw information at the nodes. This, in turn, reduces the network traffic and conserves the workload of the central node, where a static agent is available with high level information and in coordination with other modules. The protocol has been tested in different size MANETs with variable number of nodes and applications. The results shown in the simulation indicates the effectiveness of the protocol.

Regenerating codes and codes with locality are schemes recently proposed for a distributed storage network. While regenerating codes minimize the data downloaded for node repair, codes with locality minimize the number of nodes accessed during repair. In this paper, we provide some constructions of codes with locality, in which the local codes are regenerating codes, thereby combining the advantages of both classes of codes. The proposed constructions achieve an upper bound on minimum distance and are hence optimal. The constructions include both the cases when the local regenerating codes correspond to the MSR point as well as the MBR point on the storage repair-bandwidth tradeoff curve.

In a cyber physical system like vehicles number of signals to be communicated in a network system has an increasing trend. More and more mechanical and hydraulic parts are replaced by electronic control units and infotainment and multimedia applications has increased in vehicles. Safety critical hard real time messages and aperiodic messages communicated between electronic control units have been increased in recent times. Flexray is a high bandwidth protocol consisting of static segment for supporting hard real time messages and a dynamic segment for transmitting soft and non real time messages. In this paper, a method to obtain the stability region for the random arrival of messages in each electronic control units which is scheduled in the dynamic segment of Flexray protocol is presented. Number of mini slots available in the dynamic segment of Flexray restricts the arrival rate of tasks to the micro controllers or the number of micro controllers connected to the Flexray bus. Stability region of mathematical model of the system is compared with the Flexray protocol simulation results.

Transmit antenna selection (AS) has been adopted in contemporary wideband wireless standards such as Long Term Evolution (LTE). We analyze a comprehensive new model for AS that captures several key features about its operation in wideband orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. These include the use of channel-aware frequency-domain scheduling (FDS) in conjunction with AS, the hardware constraint that a user must transmit using the same antenna over all its assigned subcarriers, and the scheduling constraint that the subcarriers assigned to a user must be contiguous. The model also captures the novel dual pilot training scheme that is used in LTE, in which a coarse system bandwidth-wide sounding reference signal is used to acquire relatively noisy channel state information (CSI) for AS and FDS, and a dense narrow-band demodulation reference signal is used to acquire accurate CSI for data demodulation. We analyze the symbol error probability when AS is done in conjunction with the channel-unaware, but fair, round-robin scheduling and with channel-aware greedy FDS. Our results quantify how effective joint AS-FDS is in dispersive environments, the interactions between the above features, and the ability of the user to lower SRS power with minimal performance degradation.

Rapid diagnostics and virtual imaging of damages in complex structures like folded plate can help reduce the inspection time for guided wave based NDE and integrated SHM. Folded plate or box structure is one of the major structural components for increasing the structural strength. Damage in the folded plate, mostly in the form of surface breaking cracks in the inaccessible zone is a usual problem in aerospace structures. One side of the folded plate is attached (either riveted or bonded) to adjacent structure which is not accessible for immediate inspection. The sensor-actuator network in the form of a circular array is placed on the accessible side of the folded plate. In the present work, a circular array is employed for scanning the entire folded plate type structure for damage diagnosis and wave field visualization of entire structural panel. The method employs guided wave with relatively low frequency bandwidth of 100-300 kHz. Change in the response signal with respect to a baseline signal is used to construct a quantitative relationship with damage size parameters. Detecting damage in the folded plate by using this technique has significant potential for off-line and on-line SHM technologies. By employing this technique, surface breaking cracks on inaccessible face of the folded plate are detected without disassembly of structure in a realistic environment.

Streaming applications demand hard bandwidth and throughput guarantees in a multiprocessor environment amidst resource competing processes. We present a Label Switching based Network-on-Chip (LS-NoC) motivated by throughput guarantees offered by bandwidth reservation. Label switching is a packet relaying technique in which individual packets carry route information in the form of labels. A centralized LS-NoC Management framework engineers traffic into Quality of Service (QoS) guaranteed routes. LS-NoC caters to the requirements of streaming applications where communication channels are fixed over the lifetime of the application. The proposed NoC framework inherently supports heterogeneous and ad hoc system-on-chips. The LS-NoC can be used in conjunction with conventional best effort NoC as a QoS guaranteed communication network or as a replacement to the conventional NoC. A multicast, broadcast capable label switched router for the LS-NoC has been designed. A 5 port, 256 bit data bus, 4 bit label router occupies 0.431 mm(2) in 130 nm and delivers peak bandwidth of 80 Gbits/s per link at 312.5 MHz. Bandwidth and latency guarantees of LS-NoC have been demonstrated on traffic from example streaming applications and on constant and variable bit rate traffic patterns. LS-NoC was found to have a competitive AreaxPower/Throughput figure of merit with state-of-the-art NoCs providing QoS. Circuit switching with link sharing abilities and support for asynchronous operation make LS-NoC a desirable choice for QoS servicing in chip multiprocessors. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Low power consumption per channel and data rate minimization are two key challenges which need to be addressed in future generations of neural recording systems (NRS). Power consumption can be reduced by avoiding unnecessary processing whereas data rate is greatly decreased by sending spike time-stamps along with spike features as opposed to raw digitized data. Dynamic range in NRS can vary with time due to change in electrode-neuron distance or background noise, which demands adaptability. An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is one of the most important blocks in a NRS. This paper presents an 8-bit SAR ADC in 0.13-mu m CMOS technology along with input and reference buffer. A novel energy efficient digital-to-analog converter switching scheme is proposed, which consumes 37% less energy than the present state-of-the-art. The use of a ping-pong input sampling scheme is emphasized for multichannel input to alleviate the bandwidth requirement of the input buffer. To reduce the data rate, the A/D process is only enabled through the in-built background noise rejection logic to ensure that the noise is not processed. The ADC resolution can be adjusted from 8 to 1 bit in 1-bit step based on the input dynamic range. The ADC consumes 8.8 mu W from 1 V supply at 1 MS/s speed. It achieves effective number of bits of 7.7 bits and FoM of 42.3 fJ/conversion-step.

Photoacoustic/thermoacoustic tomography is an emerging hybrid imaging modality combining optical/microwave imaging with ultrasound imaging. Here, a k-wave MATLAB toolbox was used to simulate various configurations of excitation pulse shape, width, transducer types, and target object sizes to see their effect on the photoacoustic/thermoacoustic signals. A numerical blood vessel phantom was also used to demonstrate the effect of various excitation pulse waveforms and pulse widths on the reconstructed images. Reconstructed images were blurred due to the broadening of the pressure waves by the excitation pulse width as well as by the limited transducer bandwidth. The blurring increases with increase in pulse width. A deconvolution approach is presented here with Tikhonov regularization to correct the photoacoustic/thermoacoustic signals, which resulted in improved reconstructed images by reducing the blurring effect. It is observed that the reconstructed images remain unaffected by change in pulse widths or pulse shapes, as well as by the limited bandwidth of the ultrasound detectors after the use of the deconvolution technique.
