A FeNiSiBV amorphous composite coating was developed by laser cladding of metallic powders on AISI 1020 low carbon steel substrate. The coatings were studied using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The coating reveals different microstructures along the depth of the coating. The transition zone exhibits good metallurgical bonding between the substrate and the coating. The layer consists of amorphous phase in majority and nanocrystalline phase/crystalline phase in minority. Accompanied with the nanocrystalline phase, the amorphous phase is concentrated in the middle of the coating. The crystalline phase in the coating is identified as Fe2B. A gradient distribution of the microhardness ranges from 1208 HV0.2 to 891 HV0.2 in the coating along the depth. The coating shows higher microhardness and better wear property than the substrate.

Despite the emerging use of diamond-like carbon (DLC) as a coating for medical devices, few studies have examined the resistance of DLC coatings onto medical polymers to both microbial adherence and encrustation. In this study, amorphous DLC of a range of refractive indexes (1.7-1.9) and thicknesses (100-600 nm) was deposited onto polyurethane, a model polymer, and the resistance to microbial adherence (Escherichia coli; clinical isolate) and encrustation examined using in vitro models. In comparison to the native polymer, the advancing and receding contact angles of DLC-coated polyurethane were lower, indicating greater hydrophilic properties. No relationship was observed between refractive index, thickness, and advancing contact angle, as determined using multiple correlation analysis. The resistances of the various DLC-coated polyurethane films to encrustation and microbial adherence were significantly greater than that to polyurethane; however, there were individual differences between the resistances of the various DLC coatings. In general, increasing the refractive index of the coatings (100 nm thickness) decreased the resistance of the films to both hydroxyapatite and struvite encrustation and to microbial adherence. Films of lower thicknesses (100 and 200 nm; of defined refractive index, 1.8), exhibited the greatest resistance to encrustation and to microbial adherence. In conclusion, this study has uniquely illustrated both the microbial antiadherence properties and resistance to urinary encrustation of DLC-coated polyurethane. The resistances to encrustation and microbial adherence were substantial, and in light of this, it is suggested that DLC coatings of low thickness and refractive index show particular promise as coatings of polymeric medical devices. The preparation of porous films directly deposited onto the surface of catalyst particles is attracting increasing attention. We report here for the first time a method that can be carried out at ambient pressure for the preparation of porous films deposited over 3 mm diameter catalyst particles of silica-supported Pt-Fe. Characterization of the sample prepared at ambient pressure (i.e., open air, OA) and its main structural differences as compared with a Na-A (LTA) coated catalyst made using an autoclave-based method are presented. The OA-coated material predominantly exhibited an amorphous film over the catalyst surface with between 4 and 13% of crystallinity as compared with fully crystallized LTA zeolite crystals. This coated sample was highly selective for CO oxidation in the presence of butane with no butane oxidation observed up to 350 degrees C. This indicates, for the first time, that the presence of a crystalline membrane is not necessary for the difference in light off temperature between CO and butane to be achieved and that amorphous films may also produce this effect. An examination of the space velocity dependence and adsorption of Na+ on the catalysts indicates that the variation in CO and butane oxidation activity is not caused by site blocking predominantly, although the Pt activity was lowered by contact with this alkali.

Topographic and optical contrasts formed by Ga+ ion irradiation of thin films of amorphous silicon carbide have been investigated with scanning near-field optical microscopy. The influence of ion-irradiation dose has been studied in a pattern of sub-micrometre stripes. While the film thickness decreases monotonically with ion dose, the optical contrast rapidly increases to a maximum value and then decreases gradually. The results are discussed in terms of the competition between the effects of ion implantation and surface milling by the ion beam. The observed effects are important for uses of amorphous silicon carbide thin films as permanent archives in optical data storage applications.

Thick (4 mu m) films of anatase titania are used to photocatalyze the removal of deposited films of amorphous sulfur, similar to 2.8 mu m, thick and under moderate illumination conditions (I = 5.6 mW cm(-2)) on the open bench the process is complete within similar to 8 or 18 h using UVC or UVA light, respectively. Using UVA light, 96% of the product of the photocatalytic removal of the film of sulfur is sulfur dioxide, SO2. The photonic efficiency of this process is similar to 0.16%, which is much higher (> 15 times) than that of the removal of soot by the same films, under similar experimental conditions. In contrast to the open bench work, in a closed system the photocatalytic activity of a titania film toward the removal of sulfur decreased with repeated use, due to the accumulation of sulfuric acid on its surface generated by the subsequent photocatalytic oxidation of the initial product, SO2. The H2SO4-inactivated films are regenerated by soaking in water. The problems of using titania films to remove SO2 from a gaseous environment are discussed briefly.

Surface characterization of amorphous silica-alumina (ASA) by COads IR, pyridine(ads) IR, alkylamine temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), Cs+ and Cu(EDA)(2)(2+) exchange, H-1 NMR, and m-xylene isomerization points to the presence of a broad range of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites. Careful interpretation of IR spectra of adsorbed CO or pyridine confirms the presence of a few very strong Bronsted acid sites (BAS), typically at concentrations lower than 10 mu mol/g. The general procedure for alkylamine TPD, which probes both Bronsted and Lewis acidity, is modified to increase the selectivity to strong Bronsted acid sites. Poisoning of the m-xylene isomerization reaction by a base is presented as a novel method to quantify strong BAS. The surface also contains a weaker form of BAS, in concentrations between 50 and 150 mu mol/g, which can be quantified by COads IR Cu(EDA)(2)(2+) exchange also probes these sites. The structure of these sites remains unclear, but they might arise from the interaction of silanol groups with strong Lewis acid Al3+ sites. The surface also contains nonacidic aluminol and silanol sites (200-400 mu mol/g) and two forms of Lewis acid sites: (i) a weaker form associated with segregated alumina domains containing five-coordinated Al, which make up the interface between these domains and the ASA phase and (ii) a stronger form, which are undercoordinated Al sites grafted onto the silica surface. The acid catalytic activity in bifunctional n-heptane hydroconversion correlates with the concentration of strong BAS. The influence of the support electronegativity on the neopentane hydrogenolysis activity of supported Pt catalysts is considerably larger than that of the support Bronsted acidity. It is argued that strong Lewis acid sites, which are present in ASA but not in gamma-alumina, are essential to transmit the Sanderson electronegativity of the oxide support to the active Pt phase.

The metallo-phthalocyanines (MPcs) are an interesting group of organic semiconductor materials for applications such as large area solar cells due to their optoelectronic properties coupled with the possibility of easily and cheaply fabricating thin films of MPcs [1, 2]. As for organic semiconductors in general, many of the interesting properties of the MPcs such as magnetism, light absorption and charge transport, are highly anisotropic [2, 3]. To maximise the efficiency of a device based on these materials it is therefore important to study their molecular orientation in films and to assess the influence of different growth conditions and substrate treatments.
X-ray diffraction is a well established and powerful technique for studying texture (and hence molecular orientation) in crystalline materials, but it cannot provide any information about amorphous or nanocrystalline films. In electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy the signal comes from the spin of unpaired electrons in the material. This technique therefore does not require the sample to be crystalline. It works for any sample with paramagnetic centres such as the MPcs where the unpaired electrons are contributed by the metal. In this paper we present a continuous-wave X-band EPR study using the anisotropy of the EPR spectrum of CuPc [4] to determine the orientation effects in different types of CuPc films. From these measurements we gain insight into the molecular arrangement of films with different spin concentrations, and apply our technique to the study of molecular orientation in photovoltaic cells.

Organic semiconductors have already found commercial applications in for example displays with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and great advances are also being made in other areas, such as organic field-effect transistors and organic solar cells. [1] The organic semicondutor group of materials known as metal phthalocyanines (MPc’s) is interesting for applications such as large area solar cells due to their optoelectronic properties coupled with the possibility of easily and cheaply fabricating thin films of MPc’s. The optical properties of bismuth oxide films prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), absorption in the photon energy range 2.50-4.30 eV and optical functions (n, k, epsilon(1), and epsilon(2)) in the domain 3.20-6.50 eV, have been investigated. As-prepared films (d = 0.05-1.50 mum) are characterized by a mixture of polycrystalline and amorphous phases. The fundamental absorption edge is described by direct optical band-to-band transitions with energies 2.90 and 3.83 eV The dispersion of the optical functions provided values of 4.40-6.25 eV for electron energies of respective direct transitions. In the spectral range 400-1000 nm, bismuth oxide films show a normal dispersion, which can be interpreted in the frame of a single oscillator model. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The main purpose of this work is to present and to interpret the change of structure and physical properties of tantalum oxynitride (TaNxOy) thin films, produced by dc reactive magnetron sputtering, by varying the processing parameters. A set of TaNxOy films was prepared by varying the reactive gases flow rate, using a N2/O2 gas mixture with a concentration ratio of 17:3. The different films, obtained by this process, exhibited significant differences. The obtained composition and the interpretation of X-ray diffraction results, shows that, depending on the partial pressure of the reactive gases, the films are: essentially dark grey metallic, when the atomic ratio (N + O)/Ta < 0.1, evidencing a tetragonal β-Ta structure; grey-brownish, when 0.1 < (N + O)/Ta < 1, exhibiting a face-centred cubic (fcc) TaN-like structure; and transparent oxide-type, when (N + O)/Ta > 1, evidencing the existence of Ta2O5, but with an amorphous structure. These transparent films exhibit refractive indexes, in the visible region, always higher than 2.0. The wear resistance of the films is relatively good. The best behaviour was obtained for the films with (N + O)/Ta ≈ 0.5 and (N + O)/Ta ≈ 1.3.

The increasing interest in the interaction of light with electricity and electronically active materials made the materials and techniques for producing semitransparent electrically conducting films particularly attractive. Transparent conductors have found major applications in a number of electronic and optoelectronic devices including resistors, transparent heating elements, antistatic and electromagnetic shield coatings, transparent electrode for solar cells, antireflection coatings, heat reflecting mirrors in glass windows and many other. Tin doped indium oxide (indium tin oxide or ITO) is one of the most commonly used transparent conducting oxides. At present and likely well into the future this material offers best available performance in terms of conductivity and transmittivity combined with excellent environmental stability, reproducibility and good surface morphology. Although partial transparency, with a reduction in conductivity, can be obtained for very thin metallic films, high transparency and simultaneously high conductivity cannot be attained in intrinsic stoichiometric materials. The only way this can be achieved is by creating electron degeneracy in a wide bandgap (Eg > 3eV or more for visible radiation) material by controllably introducing non-stoichiometry and/or appropriate dopants. These conditions can be conveniently met for ITO as well as a number of other materials like Zinc oxide, Cadmium oxide etc. ITO shows interesting and technologically important combination of properties viz high luminous transmittance, high IR reflectance, good electrical conductivity, excellent substrate adherence and chemical inertness. ITO is a key part of solar cells, window coatings, energy efficient buildings, and flat panel displays. In solar cells, ITO can be the transparent, conducting top layer that lets light into the cell to shine the junction and lets electricity flow out. Improving the ITO layer can help improve the solar cell efficiency. A transparent ii conducting oxide is a material with high transparency in a derived part of the spectrum and high electrical conductivity. Beyond these key properties of transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), ITO has a number of other key characteristics. The structure of ITO can be amorphous, crystalline, or mixed, depending on the deposition temperature and atmosphere. The electro-optical properties are a function of the crystallinity of the material. In general, ITO deposited at room temperature is amorphous, and ITO deposited at higher temperatures is crystalline. Depositing at high temperatures is more expensive than at room temperature, and this method may not be compatible with the underlying devices. The main objective of this thesis work is to optimise the growth conditions of Indium tin oxide thin films at low processing temperatures. The films are prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering under various deposition conditions. The films are also deposited on to flexible substrates by employing bias sputtering technique. The films thus grown were characterised using different tools. A powder x-ray diffractometer was used to analyse the crystalline nature of the films. The energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used for evaluating the composition and morphology of the films. Optical properties were investigated using the UVVIS- NIR spectrophotometer by recording the transmission/absorption spectra. The electrical properties were studied using vander Pauw four probe technique. The plasma generated during the sputtering of the ITO target was analysed using Langmuir probe and optical emission spectral studies.

The optical and carrier transport properties of amorphous transparent zinc indium tin oxide (ZITO)(a-ZITO) thin films and the characteristics of the thin-film transistors TFTs were examined as a function of chemical composition. The as-deposited films were very conductive and showed clear free carrier absorption FCA . The analysis of the FCA gave the effective mass value of 0.53 me and a momentum relaxation time of 3.9 fs for an a-ZITO film with Zn:In:Sn = 0.35:0.35:0.3. TFTs with the as-deposited channels did not show current modulation due to the high carrier density in the channels. Thermal annealing at 300°C decreased the carrier density and TFTs fabricated with the annealed channels operated with positive threshold voltages VT when Zn contents were 25 atom % or larger. VT shifted to larger negative values, and subthreshold voltage swing increased with decreasing the Zn content, while large on–off current ratios 107–108 were kept for all the Zn contents. The field effect mobilities ranged from 12.4 to 3.4 cm2 V−1 s−1 for the TFTs with Zn contents varying from 5 to 48 atom %. The role of Zn content is also discussed in relation to the carrier transport properties and amorphous structures.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were deposited on quartz, silicon, and polymer substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique at different oxygen partial pressures (0.007 mbar to 0.003 mbar). Polycrystalline ZnO films were obtained at room temperature when the oxygen pressure was between 0.003 mbar and .007 mbar, above and below this pressure the films were amorphous as indicated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD). ZnO films were deposited on Al2O3 (0001) at different substrate temperatures varying from 400oC to 600oC and full width half maximum (FWHM) of XRD peak is observed to decrease as substrate temperature increases. The optical band gaps of these films were nearly 3.3 eV. A cylindrical Langmuir probe is used for the investigation of plasma plume arising from the ZnO target. The spatial and temporal variations in electron density and electron temperature are studied. Optical emission spectroscopy is used to identify the different ionic species in the plume. Strong emission lines of neutral Zn, Zn+ and neutral oxygen are observed. No electronically excited O+ cations are identified, which is in agreement with previous studies of ZnO plasma plume.
