Reverse Microemulsion Synthesis, Structure, and Luminescence of Nanosized REPO(4):Ln(3+) (RE = La, Y, Gd, or Yb, and Ln = Eu, Tm, or Er)

A surfactant-mediated solution route for the obtainment of nanosized rare-earth orthophosphates of different compositions (LaPO(4):Eu(3+), (Y,Gd)PO(4):Eu(3+),LaPO(4):Tm(3+), YPO(4):Tm(3+), and YbPO(4):Er(3+)) is presented, and the implications of the morphology control on the solids properties are discussed. The solids are prepared in water-in-heptane microemulsions, using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and 1-butanol as the surfactant and cosurfactant; the alteration of the starting microemulsion composition allows the obtainment of similar to 30 nm thick nanorods with variable length. The morphology and the structure of the solids were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy and through powder X-ray diffractometry; dynamic light scattering and thermal analyses were also performed. The obtained materials were also characterized through vibrational (FTIR) and luminescence spectroscopy (emission/excitation, luminescence lifetimes, chromaticity, and quantum efficiency), where the red, blue, and upconversion emissions of the prepared phosphors were evaluated.

Luminescent and morphological study of Sr(2)CeO(4) blue phosphor prepared from oxalate precursors

Luminescent and morphological studies of Sr(2)CeO(4) blue phosphor prepared from cerium-doped strontium oxalate precursor are reported Powder samples were prepared from 5 and 25 mol% Ce(3+)-doped strontium oxalate as well as from a mechanical mixture of strontium oxalate and cerium oxalate at a 4 1 ratio respectively All the samples were characterized by XRD IR PLS and SEM The luminescent and structural properties of the Sr(2)CeO(4) material are little affected by the SrCO(3) remaining from precursors The Sr(2)CeO(4) material consists in one-dimensional chains of edge-sharing CeO(6) octahedra that are linked together by Sr(2+) ions The carbonate ion might be associated with oxygen ions of the linear chain and also with the oxygen atoms located in the equatorial position which consequently affects the charge transfer bands between O(2-) and Ce(4+). Unraveling the Na,K-ATPase alpha(4) Subunit Assembling Induced by Large Amounts of C(12)E(8) by Means of Small-Angle X-ray Scattering

In the current work, we studied the effect of the nonionic detergent dodecyloctaethyleneglycol, C(12)E(8), on the structure and oligomeric form of the Na,K-ATPase membrane enzyme (sodium-potassium pump) in aqueous suspension, by means of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Samples composed of 2 mg/mL of Na,K-ATPase, extracted from rabbit kidney medulla, in the presence of a small amount of C(12)E(8) (0.005 mg/mL) and in larger concentrations ranging from 2.7 to 27 mg/mL did not present catalytic activity. Under this condition, an oligomerization of the alpha subunits is expected. SAXS data were analyzed by means of a global fitting procedure supposing that the scattering is due to two independent contributions: one coming from the enzyme and the other one from C(12)E(8) micelles. In the small detergent content (0.005 mg/mL), the SAXS results evidenced that Na,K-ATPase is associated into aggregates larger than (alpha beta)(2) form. When 2.7 mg/mL of C(12)E(8) is added, the data analysis revealed the presence of alpha(4) aggregates in the solution and some free micelles. Increasing the detergent amount up to 27 mg/mL does not disturb the alpha(4) aggregate: just more micelles of the same size and shape are proportionally formed in solution. We believe that our results shed light on a better understanding of how nonionic detergents induce subunit dissociation and reassembling to minimize the exposure of hydrophobic residues to the aqueous solvent.

Synthesis of naturally occurring diene and trienes by Te/Li exchange on (1Z,3Z)-butyltelluro-4-methoxy-1,3-butadiene

(1Z,3Z)-Butyltelluro-o-4-methoxy-1,3-butadiene 2 was obtained by the hydrotelluration of(Z)-1-methoxy-but-1-en-3-ynes 1. The butadienyllithium 3 obtained by the Te/Li exchange reaction in the (1Z,3Z)-1-butyltelluro-4-methoxy-1.3-butadiene 2 reacted with aldehydes to form the corresponding alcohols 4a-d with total retention of configuration. The alcohols formed undergo hydrolysis, resulting in the alpha,beta,gamma,delta-unsaturated aldehydes of (E,E) configuration, which are precursors of trienes obtained from natural sources. The products of this reaction were employed in the synthesis of methyl-(2E,4E)-decadienoate 7, which is a component of the flavor principles of ripe Bartlett pears. Performing the Wittig reaction of the methyl triphenylphosphorane with the deca-(2E,4E)-dienal 5a, we were able to synthesize the undeca-(1,3E,5E)-triene 6a. This compound is a sex-pheromone component of the marine brown algae Fucus serratus, Dictyopteris plagiograma, and Dictyopteris australis. Performing the Wittig reaction of methyl triphenylphosphorane with the octa-(2E,4E)-dienal 5c, the nona-(1,3E,5E)-triene 6b was synthesized. The compound obtained is a sex-pheromone component of the marine brown alga Sargassum horneri. The octa-( 1,3E,5E)-triene 6c was easily obtained from hepta-(2E,4E)-dienal 5d by the Wittig reaction with methyl triphenylphophorane. Magnetic Investigation of CoFe(2)O(4) Nanoparticles Supported in Biocompatible Polymeric Microsphere

Magnetic investigation of spinel ferrite nanoparticles dispersed in biocompatible polymeric microspheres is reported in this study. X-ray diffraction data analysis confirms the presence of nanosized CoFe(2)O(4) particles (mean size of similar to 8 nm). This finding is corroborated by transmission electron microscopy micrographs. Magnetization isotherms suggest a spin disorder likely occurring at the nanoparticle`s surface. The saturation magnetization value is used to estimate particle concentration of 1.6 x 10(18) cm(-3) dispersed in the polymeric template. A T(1/2) dependence of the coercive field is determined in the low-temperature region (T < 30 K). The model of non-interacting mono-domains is used to estimate an effective magnetic anisotropy of K(eff) = 0.6 x 10(5) J/m(3). The K(eff) value we found is lower than the value reported for spherically-shaped CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles, though consistent with the low coercive field observed in the investigated sample.

Gas-phase dissociation of 1,4-naphthoquinone derivative anions by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry

Gas-phase dissociation pathways of deprotonated 1,4-naphthoquinone (NQ) derivatives have been investigated by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). The major decomposition routes have been elucidated on the basis of quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level. Deprotonation sites have been indicated by analysis of natural charges and gas-phase acidity. NQ anions underwent an interesting reaction under collision-induced dissociation conditions, which resulted in the radical elimination of the lateral chain, in contrast with the even-electron rule. Possible pathways have been suggested, and their mechanisms have been elucidated on the basis of Gibbs energy and enthalpy values for the anions previously described at each pathway. Synthesis and characterization of trans-[Ru(NO)Cl(L)(4)](PF(6))(2) (L = isonicotinamide; 4-acetylpyridine) and related species

The trans-[RUCl(2)(L)(4)], trans-[Ru(NO)Cl (L)(4)](PF(6))(2) (L = isonicotinamide and 4-acetylpyridine) and trans-[Ru(NO)(OH)(py)(4)]Cl(2) (py = pyridine) complexes have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, UV-visible, infrared, and (1)H NMR spectroscopies, and cyclic voltammetry. The MLCT band energies of trans-[RUCl(2)(L)(4) increase in the order 4-acpy < isn < py. The reduction potentials of trans-[RuCl(2)(L)(4)] and trans-[Ru(NO)Cl(L)(4)](2+) increase in the order py < isn < 4-acpy. The stretching band frequency. v(NO), of the nitrosyl complexes ranges from 1913 to 1852 cm(-1) indicating a nitrosonium character for the NO ligand. Due to the large pi-acceptor ability of the equatorial ligands, the coordinated water is much more acidic in the water soluble trans-[Ru(NO)(H(2)O)(py)(4)](3+) than in trans-[Ru(NO)(H(2)O)(NH(3))(4)](3+) (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. In the title compound, C13H14N2O7, steric crowding around the aromatic ring results in significant out-of-plane twisting of the nitro, methoxy, acetoxy and 2-nitropropenyl functional groups. These distortions are explained by comparison with less congested substituted benzene analogues.

Translational incorporation of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine into proteins

An Escherichia coli cell-free transcription/translation system was used to explore the high-level incorporation Of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) into proteins by replacing tyrosine with DOPA in the reaction mixtures. ESI-MS showed specific incorporation of DOPA in place of tyrosine. More than 90% DOPA incorporation at each tyrosine site was achieved, allowing the recording of clean N-15-HSQC NMR spectra. A redox-staining method specific for DOPA was shown to provide a sensitive and generally applicable method for assessing the cell-free production of proteins. Of four proteins produced in soluble form in the presence of tyrosine, two resulted in insoluble aggregates in the presence of high levels of DOPA. DOPA has been found in human proteins, often in association with various disease states that implicate protein aggregation and/or misfolding. Our results suggest that misfolded and aggregated proteins may result, in principle, from ribosome-mediated misincorporation of intracellular DOPA accumulated due to oxidative stress. High-yield cell-free protein expression systems are uniquely suited to obtain rapid information on solubility and aggregation of nascent polypeptide chains.

Synthesis, X-ray analysis and DFT study of 2-amino-3-(N-oxipiridin-4-ilsulfanil)-propionic acid dihydrate

The title compound, C(8)H(14)N(2)O(5)S 2(H(2)O), 2-amino-3-(N-oxipiridin-4-ilsulfanil)-propionic acid dihydrate, is obtained by the reaction of cysteine and 4-nitropyridine N-oxide in dimethylformamide, removing the NO(2) group from the benzene ring and releasing nitrous acid into the solution. The molecule exists as a Zwitterion. Hydrogen bond interactions involving the title molecule and water molecules allow the formation of R(5)(5)(23) edge fused rings parallel to (010). Water molecules are connected independently, forming infinite chains (wires), in square wave form, along the b-axis. The chirality of the cysteine molecule used in the synthesis is retained in the title molecule. A density functional theory (DFT) optimized structure at the B3LYP/6-311G(3df,2p) level allows comparison of calculated and experimental IR spectra.

Even if he is first and foremost interested in the process of rationalisation throughout western civilisation, his Sociology of music is founded on the idea of the technical medium, which he explores in several different directions. This idea will be examined here by means of several examples drawn from western music, particularly from the romantic piano repertoire.

Viral Load Predicts New World Health Organization Stage 3 and 4 Events in HIV-Infected Children Receiving Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, Independent of CD4 T Lymphocyte Value

Background. Many resource-limited countries rely on clinical and immunological monitoring without routine virological monitoring for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). We assessed whether HIV load had independent predictive value in the presence of immunological and clinical data for the occurrence of new World Health Organization (WHO) stage 3 or 4 events (hereafter, WHO events) among HIV-infected children receiving HAART in Latin America. Methods. The NISDI (Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development International Site Development Initiative) Pediatric Protocol is an observational cohort study designed to describe HIV-related outcomes among infected children. Eligibility criteria for this analysis included perinatal infection, age ! 15 years, and continuous HAART for >= 6 months. Cox proportional hazards modeling was used to assess time to new WHO events as a function of immunological status, viral load, hemoglobin level, and potential confounding variables; laboratory tests repeated during the study were treated as time-varying predictors. Results. The mean duration of follow-up was 2.5 years; new WHO events occurred in 92 (15.8%) of 584 children. In proportional hazards modeling, most recent viral load 15000 copies/mL was associated with a nearly doubled risk of developing a WHO event (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.81; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-3.11; P = 033), even after adjustment for immunological status defined on the basis of CD4 T lymphocyte value, hemoglobin level, age, and body mass index. Conclusions. Routine virological monitoring using the WHO virological failure threshold of 5000 copies/mL adds independent predictive value to immunological and clinical assessments for identification of children receiving HAART who are at risk for significant HIV-related illness. To provide optimal care, periodic virological monitoring should be considered for all settings that provide HAART to children.

Comparison of reading performance after bilateral implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses with+3.00 or+4.00 diopter addition

PURPOSE To compare reading ability after cataract surgery and bilateral implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) with a +3 00 diopter (D) addition (add) or a +4 00 D add SETTING Department of Ophthalmology, University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil DESIGN Prospective comparative study METHODS Patients scheduled for cataract surgery were randomly assigned to bilateral implantation of an aspheric AcrySof ReSTOR multifocal IOL with a +3 00 diopter (D) addition (add) or a +4 00 D add The reading speed, critical print size, and reading acuity were measured binocularly with best correction using MNREAD acuity charts 6 months after surgery Patients were tested with the chart at the best patient-preferred reading distance and at 40 cm Binocular uncorrected and best distance-corrected visual acuities at far and near were also measured RESULTS The study enrolled 32 patients At the best reading distance the results were similar between the 2 IOL groups in all reading parameters When tested at 40 cm, reading speed at all print sizes from 03 to 00 (all P< 001), critical print size (P< 001) and reading acuity (P = 014) were statistically significantly better in the +3 00 D IOL group than in the +4 00 DIOL group Uncorrected and corrected visual acuities at far and near were similar between the 2 groups CONCLUSION Although the 2 IOL groups had similar performance in reading parameters, patients had to adjust to their best reading distance The +3 00 D IOL performed better than the +4 00 D IOL at 40 cm

Binding and internalization of the melanocyte stimulating hormone receptor ligand [Nle(4), D-Phe(7)]alpha-MSH in B16 melanoma cells

The current study aims to ascertain the fate of the melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) receptor and its ligand [Nle(4), D-Phe(7)]alpha-MsH (NDP-MSH) following binding to murine B16 melanoma cells. Cells were incubated with [I-125]-NDP-MSH for up to 180 min and binding, internalization and degradation determined. Intracellular trafficking of the radiolabel was assessed !using Percoll density gradient centrifugation of homogenized cells. Receptor down-regulation and receptor mRNA levels were also measured over 96 hr after exposure to 1 mu M ligand. NDP-MSH accumulation increased with time in a temperature-dependent manner and was inhibited by excess peptide. The ligand was rapidly internalized and translocated to the lysosomal compartment where it was degraded. Internalization was accompanied by a loss or down-regulation of cell surface receptors, suggesting internalization of the NDP-MSH-receptor complex. No recycling of the receptors between the plasma membrane and intracellular compartments could be detected in this cell-hue. Approximately 15% of the surface receptors were resistant to down-regulation, possibly indicating receptor heterogeneity. Down-regulation persisted ibr up to 96 hr and was accompanied by a decrease in MSH receptor mRNA levels 48 hr after treatment. However, before this time, transcript levels were the same in treated and control cells. In contrast to what was seen with NDP-MSH, cell surface receptors removed with trypsin wc:re rapidly replaced. These results show that NDP-MSH not only induced MSH receptor :internalization but also inhibited receptor turnover, resulting in a prolonged down-regulation. It is concluded that, in B16 cells, the MSH receptor undergoes ligand-dependent internalization, resulting in a prolonged down-regulation. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
