The objective of this thesis is the investigation of the Mode-I fracture mechanics parameters of quasi-brittle materials to shed light onto the influence of the width and size of the specimen on the fracture response of notched beams. To further the knowledge on the fracture process, 3D digital image correlation (DIC) was employed. A new method is proposed to determine experimentally the critical value of the crack opening, which is then used to determine the size of the fracture process zone (FPZ). In addition, the Mode-I fracture mechanics parameters are compared with the Mode-II interfacial properties of composites materials that feature as matrices the quasi-brittle materials studied in Mode-I conditions. To investigate the Mode II fracture parameters, single-lap direct shear tests are performed. Notched concrete beams with six cross-sections has been tested using a three-point bending (TPB) test set-up (Mode-I fracture mechanics). Two depths and three widths of the beam are considered. In addition to concrete beams, alkali-activated mortar beams (AAMs) that differ by the type and size of the aggregates have been tested using the same TPB set-up. Two dimensions of AAMs are considered. The load-deflection response obtained from DIC is compared with the load-deflection response obtained from the readings of two linear variable displacement transformers (LVDT). Load responses, peak loads, strain profiles along the ligament from DIC, fracture energy and failure modes of TPB tests are discussed. The Mode-II problem is investigated by testing steel reinforced grout (SRG) composites bonded to masonry and concrete elements under single-lap direct shear tests. Two types of anchorage systems are proposed for SRG reinforced masonry and concrete element to study their effectiveness. An indirect method is proposed to find the interfacial properties, compare them with the Mode-I fracture properties of the matrix and to model the effect of the anchorage.

The goal of this dissertation is both to expand EPTIC, the European Parliament Translation and Interpreting Corpus containing EU Parliament plenary speeches in five different languages, and to carry out a case study on the corpus. The corpus was expanded by adding 52 new speeches in both oral and written form in a language that was not hitherto represented in the corpus i.e., Finnish. The case study focuses on the analysis of the English structure “head noun + of + modifier” interpreted into Finnish with the use of the genitive case. As for several previous case studies, this dissertation shows the potential of a corpus such as EPTIC, despite its limited size. It can be used to expand research in the fields of translation and interpreting, but also for didactic purposes. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first offers a theoretical background, by presenting the notion of “corpus,” the different types of corpora – particularly focusing on intermodal corpora – and an overview of corpus-based translation and interpreting studies. The second chapter focuses on the EPTIC corpus i.e., on its development and structure, and it then describes all phases of the construction of the corpus. Finally, the third chapter presents the case study, which is introduced by a description of the genitive case in Finnish and of several strategies used by interpreters to face certain difficulties in simultaneous interpreting. The case study highlights two dimensions of the EPTIC corpus. Each original speech was compared with its interpreted version (parallel dimension), and each interpreted speech was compared with its verbatim report, the written version of the oral speech (intermodal dimension). The results confirm the initial assumption of higher accuracy in translation compared to interpreting of the “of structure” from English into Finnish. Moreover, the use of the genitive case in Finnish is higher among translators than interpreters.

We prove a characterization of the support of the law of the solution for a stochastic wave equation with two-dimensional space variable, driven by a noise white in time and correlated in space. The result is a consequence of an approximation theorem, in the convergence of probability, for equations obtained by smoothing the random noise. For some particular classes of coefficients, approximation in the Lp-norm for p¿1 is also proved.

The molecules of ethyl 4-(5-amino-3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-1yl) benzoate, C13H15N3O2, are linked by two independent N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds into a chain of edge-fused and alternating R-4(2)(8) and R-2(2)(20) rings. A combination of N-H center dot center dot center dot N and N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds links the molecules of methyl 4-(5-amino-3-tert-butyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl) benzoate, C15H19N3O2, into sheets of alternating R-2(2)(20) and R-6(6)(32) rings. In 4-(5-amino-3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl) benzoic acid monohydrate, C11H11N3O2 center dot H2O, the molecular components are linked into a three-dimensional framework structure by a combination of five independent hydrogen bonds, two of O-H center dot center dot center dot N type and one each of O-H center dot center dot center dot O, N-H center dot center dot center dot O and N-H center dot center dot center dot N types

Soon after its discovery in the 1950s, NMR had become an indispensable tool fr chemists. In the 1970s and 1980s, the power of the technique was extended from one dimension to two and even three dimensions, opening up exciting applkications in both chemistry and biochemistry. the success of one dimensional. high-resolution NMR stems from the unique insights that it can provide about molecular structure. The chemical shift of a nucleus gives invaluable information abut the chemical environment in which that nucleus is located, Coupling interactions between hydorgen nuclei, as revealed by characteristic splitting patterns inthe 1H-NMR spectrum, provide informaton about the loaction of one group of hydorgen atoms relative to others inthe molecule. And the nuclearf Overhauser effect (nOe) can shed light on molecular stereochemistry.

Using variational and numerical solutions of the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation for attractive interaction (with cubic or Kerr nonlinearity), we show that a stable bound state can appear in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a localized exponentially screened radially symmetric harmonic potential well in two and three dimensions. We also consider an axially symmetric configuration with zero axial trap and a exponentially screened radial trap so that the resulting bound state can freely move along the axial direction like a soliton. The binding of the present states in shallow wells is mostly due to the nonlinear interaction with the trap playing a minor role. Hence, these BEC states are more suitable to study the effect of the nonlinear force on the dynamics. We illustrate the highly nonlinear nature of breathing oscillations of these states. Such bound states could be created in BECs and studied in the laboratory with present knowhow.

The Gross-Pitaevskii equation for Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in two space dimensions under the action of a harmonic oscillator trap potential for bosonic atoms with attractive and repulsive interparticle interactions was numerically studied by using time-dependent and time-independent approaches. In both cases, numerical difficulty appeared for large nonlinearity. Nonetheless, the solution of the time-dependent approach exhibited intrinsic oscillation with time iteration which is independent of space and time steps used in discretization.

We report a comprehensive study of weak-localization and electron-electron interaction effects in a GaAs/InGaAs two-dimensional electron system with nearby InAs quantum dots, using measurements of the electrical conductivity with and without magnetic field. Although both the effects introduce temperature dependent corrections to the zero magnetic field conductivity at low temperatures, the magnetic field dependence of conductivity is dominated by the weak-localization correction. We observed that the electron dephasing scattering rate tau(-1)(phi), obtained from the magnetoconductivity data, is enhanced by introducing quantum dots in the structure, as expected, and obeys a linear dependence on the temperature and elastic mean free path, which is against the Fermi-liquid model.
