O presente estudo teve como principal objetivo oferecer uma contribuição para reflexão a respeito do emprego da linguagem dos docentes nas turmas de prováveis concludentes do Ensino Médio Integrado do Instituto Federal de Sergipe, apontando as representações dos alunos sobre essa prática, tendo em vista alguns deles afirmarem, em conversa amistosa, nos corredores ou em sala de aula, que deixavam de compreender determinado assunto, recém abordado, por não conseguirem compreender a linguagem utilizada pelos professores durante as aulas. De igual modo, pensamos obter as representações dos professores sobre a linguagem por eles utilizada nessas mesmas turmas. Nas discussões teóricas, buscamos conceituar a linguagem e, tomando como pólo orientador o pensamento de Bernstein, observar se esta escola mantém como regra a prática do código elaborado, através do qual poderá discriminar ou até excluir o aluno oriundo das classes menos favorecidas, que conhece e faz uso do código restrito. Ao utilizar a linguagem do professor como mediadora, procuramos avaliar se havia uma justa relação na comunicação professor-aluno, através da utilização de uma forma de linguagem acessível, que se mostrasse igual para todos, propiciando maior interação em sala de aula. Procedimentos metodológicos, embasados na pesquisa descritiva de caráter exploratório, envolveram aulas observadas, questionários, entrevistas semi-estruturadas, além de relatório das tarefas feitas com professores e alunos, cujos resultados serão apresentados como tentativa de contribuir para melhoria do processo de ensino-aprendizagem dentro do Campus Aracaju do Instituto Federal de Sergipe. Nas considerações finais são apresentadas algumas sugestões para trabalhos futuros.

Esta pesquisa destinou-se a estudar e analisar a política da Gestão Democrática com ênfase na “Participação da Família” nos processos decisórios da escola. Enfoques sobre esse tema é concernente à aprendizagem, onde se busca conhecer as influências da interação das famílias com a escola e o impacto dessa relação na aprendizagem. O processo da democratização e descentralização contribui muito para a formulação de estratégias políticas visando à participação, ou seja, garante essa participação através de representações que os pais fazem nas instituições como Associações de Pais e Mestres, Conselhos Escolares e outros, como processo fundamental para fortalecer as lideranças escolares e a gestão democrática e participativa nas unidades de ensino público. Sem esquecer que quando se fala em comunidade escolar, além dos segmentos de alunos, professores e funcionários envolvidos (comunidade externa) está falando de todo um segmento de pessoas posicionadas no entorno das escolas, dedicando-se às mais variadas atividades, e, com especial ênfase, está se referindo às famílias desses alunos. Em linhas gerais, a lógica da gestão é orientada pelos princípios democráticos, caracterizada pelo reconhecimento da importância da participação consciente e esclarecida das pessoas nas decisões das atividades escolares. A pesquisa foi extensiva investigando 4 escolas, sendo 2 da zona urbana, 2 da zona rural, estendendo-se aos conselhos escolares com participação em reuniões, assembléias, entrevistas e momentos de observação durante 4 meses. Neste sentido, os Conselhos Escolares e entrevistados, afirmam a importância da participação na Gestão Escolar, contudo, ainda faltam requisitos técnicos para se consolidar um trabalho mais efetivo de participação. Os resultados também apontam à necessidade de repensar a formação e capacitação dos gestores, voltada para a promoção de uma cultura de reflexão, crítica e assimilação de idéias, associadas à ação, pelo conjunto dos que fazem à realidade escolar, contemplando a relação entre Escola e Família.

Using experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model, the climate impacts of a basin-scale warming or cooling of the North Atlantic Ocean are investigated. Multidecadal fluctuations with this pattern were observed during the twentieth century, and similar variations--but with larger amplitude--are believed to have occurred in the more distant past. It is found that in all seasons the response to warming the North Atlantic is strongest, in the sense of highest signal-to-noise ratio, in the Tropics. However there is a large seasonal cycle in the climate impacts. The strongest response is found in boreal summer and is associated with suppressed precipitation and elevated temperatures over the lower-latitude parts of North and South America. In August­-September-­October there is a significant reduction in the vertical shear in the main development region for Atlantic hurricanes. In winter and spring, temperature anomalies over land in the extratropics are governed by dynamical changes in circulation rather than simply reflecting a thermodynamic response to the warming or cooling of the ocean. The tropical climate response is primarily forced by the tropical SST anomalies, and the major features are in line with simple models of the tropical circulation response to diabatic heating anomalies. The extratropical climate response is influenced both by tropical and higher-latitude SST anomalies and exhibits nonlinear sensitivity to the sign of the SST forcing. Comparisons with multidecadal changes in sea level pressure observed in the twentieth century support the conclusion that the impact of North Atlantic SST change is most important in summer, but also suggest a significant influence in lower latitudes in autumn and winter. Significant climate impacts are not restricted to the Atlantic basin, implying that the Atlantic Ocean could be an important driver of global decadal variability. The strongest remote impacts are found to occur in the tropical Pacific region in June­-August and September­-November. Surface anomalies in this region have the potential to excite coupled ocean­atmosphere feedbacks, which are likely to play an important role in shaping the ultimate climate response.

This paper maps the carbonate geochemistry of the Makgadikgadi Pans region of northern Botswana from moderate resolution (500 m pixels) remotely sensed data, to assess the impact of various geomorphological processes on surficial carbonate distribution. Previous palaeo-environmental studies have demonstrated that the pans have experienced several highstands during the Quaternary, forming calcretes around shoreline embayments. The pans are also a significant regional source of dust, and some workers have suggested that surficial carbonate distributions may be controlled, in part, by wind regime. Field studies of carbonate deposits in the region have also highlighted the importance of fluvial and groundwater processes in calcrete formation. However, due to the large area involved and problems of accessibility, the carbonate distribution across the entire Makgadikgadi basin remains poorly understood. The MODIS instrument permits mapping of carbonate distribution over large areas; comparison with estimates from Landsat Thematic Mapper data show reasonable agreement, and there is good agreement with estimates from laboratory analysis of field samples. The results suggest that palaeo-lake highstands, reconstructed here using the SRTM 3 arc-second digital elevation model, have left behind surficial carbonate deposits, which can be mapped by the MODIS instrument. The Fazzan Basin of south-west Libya is at present arid with less than 20 mm of rainfall per annum. However, regionally extensive limestones, lacustrine sands and coquina (fossiliferous carbonate rock) deposits show that the Fazzan Basin previously contained a large palaeolake, indicating that the climate in the past was more humid. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating techniques have been applied to key lacustrine deposits within the basin in an attempt to provide an internally consistent chronology for this humidity record. Results indicate that palaeolake sediments within the Fazzan Basin record a very long history of palacohydrological change, ranging from present day and conditions to humidity capable of sustaining a lake with an approximate area of 76,250 km(2). The existence of humid periods in mid oxygen isotope stage 5 and the early Holocene is confirmed. An older lacustrine event, tentatively correlated to oxygen isotope stage 11, is also recognized. In addition, evidence is presented for at least two humid phases beyond the age range over which the conventional OSL dating technique is applicable. This study demonstrates that OSL dating of palaeolake sediments within the Fazzan Basin offers the potential to provide a detailed record of North African humidity spanning several glacial-interglacial cycles. The freshwaters of the Mersey Basin have been seriously polluted for over 200 years. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the water quality was relatively clean before the start of the Industrial Revolution. The development of the cotton and chemical industries increased the pollution load to rivers, and consequently a decline in biota supported by the water was observed. Industrial prosperity led to a rapid population increase and an increase in domestic effluent. Poor treatment of this waste meant that it was a significant pollutant. As industry intensified during the 19th century, the mix of pollutants grew more complex. Eventually, in the 1980s, the government acknowledged the problem and more effort was made to improve the water quality. Knowledge of social and economic history, as well as anecdotal evidence, has been used in this paper to extrapolate the changes in water quality that occurred. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. The Mersey Basin has been significantly polluted for over 200 years. However, there is a lack of quantitative historical water quality data as effective water quality monitoring and data recording only began 30-40 years ago. This paper assesses water pollution in the Mersey Basin using a Water Pollution Index constructed from social and economic data. Methodology, output and the difficulties involved with validation are discussed. With the limited data input available the index approximately reproduces historical water quality. The paper illustrates how historical studies of environmental water quality may provide valuable identification of factors responsible for pollution and a marker set for contemporary and future water quality issues in the context of the past. This is an issue of growing research interest.
