The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of therapeutic dose X rays on the microhardness (MH) and degree of conversion (DC) of two different esthetic restorative dental materials. The materials were photo-activated with a LED light-curing unit using three cure-times: 5, 20 and 40 seconds. The photo-activation was carried out in two distinct periods: before and after irradiation with doses of 5, 35 and 70 Gy, from a 6 MV X rays beam. In accordance with the methodology used, it was conclude that a therapeutic dose does not have a detrimental effect on the photoinitiator molecules, because the photo-activation occurred after they were irradiated. When the irradiation was applied before photo-activation, the materials showed MH improvement, but when photo-activation was performed after irradiation, there was less improvement. However, there was no correlation between MH and DC. Thus, a therapeutic dose applied to cured material can promote linking and breaking of chain bonds in a non-linear way.

As a contribution towards detecting the genetic effects of low doses of genotoxic physical agents, this paper deals with the consequences of low-dose X-rays in the Aspergillus nidulans genome. The irradiation doses studied were those commonly used in dental clinics (1-5 cGy). Even very low doses promoted increased mitotic crossing-over frequencies in diploid strains heterozygous for several genetic markers including the ones involved in DNA repair and recombination mechanisms. Genetic markers of several heterozygous strains were individu`ally analyzed disclosing that some markers were especially sensitive to the treatments. These markers should be chosen as bio-indicators in the homozygotization index assay to better detect the recombinogenic/carcinogenic genomic effects of low-dose X-rays.

Cooperative scattering of light by an extended object such as an atomic ensemble or a dielectric sphere is fundamentally different from scattering from many pointlike scatterers such as single atoms. Homogeneous distributions tend to scatter cooperatively, whereas fluctuations of the density distribution increase the disorder and suppress cooperativity. In an atomic cloud, the amount of disorder can be tuned via the optical thickness, and its role can be studied via the radiation force exerted by the light on the atomic cloud. Monitoring cold (87)Rb atoms released from a magneto-optical trap, we present the first experimental signatures of radiation force reduction due to cooperative scattering. The results are in agreement with an analytical expression interpolating between the disorder and the cooperativity-dominated regimes.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the gamma radiation effects on green tea odor volatiles in green tea at doses of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 kGy. The volatile organic compounds were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS. The green tea had a large influence on radiation effects, increasing the identified volatiles in relation to control samples. The dose of 10 kGy was responsible to form the majority of new odor compounds following by 5 and 20 kGy. However, the dose of 5 kGy was the dose that degraded the majority of volatiles in non-irradiated samples, following by 20 kGy. The dose of 15 kGy showed has no effect on odor volatiles. The gamma radiation, at dose up to 20 kGy, showed statistically no difference between irradiated and non irradiated green tea on odors compounds. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study we assessed the protective effect of topical application of Pothomorphe umbellata extract on ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced skin lesion parameters in hairless mouse epidermis. A single dose of UVB irradiation (0.23 kJ/m(2)) resulted in a significant decrease in thymine dimer-positive cells and apoptotic sunburn cells, with an increase in p53 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive cells in the epidermis. After 5 weeks (total dose 13.17 kJ/m(2)) and 15 weeks (total dose 55.51 kJ/m(2)) of irradiation, P. umbellata treatment inhibited the hyperplasic response and induced an increase in p53-positive cells. These findings suggest that P. umbellata extract affords protection against UVB-induced skin lesions.

Papain is a proteolytic enzyme that has been widely used as debridement agent for scars and wound healing treatment. However, papain presents low stability, which limits its use to extemporaneous or short shelf-life formulations. The purpose of this study was to entrap papain into a polymeric matrix in order to obtain a drug delivery system that could be used as medical device. Since these systems must be sterile, gamma radiation is an interesting option and presents advantages in relation to conventional agents: no radioactive residues are formed: the product can be sterilized inside the final packaging and has an excellent reliability. The normative reference for the establishment of the sterilizing dose determines 25 kGy as the inactivation dose for viable microorganisms. A silicone dispersion was selected to prepare membranes containing 2% (w/w) papain. Irradiated and non-irradiated membranes were simultaneously assessed in order to verify whether gamma radiation interferes with the drug-releasing profile. Results showed that irradiation does not affect significantly papain release and its activity. Therefore papain shows radioresistance in the irradiation conditions applied. In conclusion, gamma radiation can be easily used as sterilizing agent without affecting the papain release profile and its activity onto the biocompatible device is studied. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Conidia are responsible for reproduction, dispersal, environmental persistence and host infection of many fungal species. One of the main environmental factors that can kill and/or damage conidia is solar UV radiation. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD) are the major DNA photoproducts induced by UVB. We examined the conidial germination kinetics and the occurrence of CPD in DNA of conidia exposed to different doses of UVB radiation. Conidia of Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus nidulans and Metarhizium acridum were exposed to UVB doses of 0.9, 1.8, 3.6 and 5.4 kJ m-2. CPD were quantified using T4 endonuclease V and alkaline agarose gel electrophoresis. Most of the doses were sublethal for all three species. Exposures to UVB delayed conidial germination and the delays were directly related both to UVB doses and CPD frequencies. The frequencies of dimers also were linear and directly proportional to the UVB doses, but the CPD yields differed among species. We also evaluated the impact of conidial pigmentation on germination and CPD induction on Metarhizium robertsii. The frequency of dimers in an albino mutant was approximately 10 times higher than of its green wild-type parent strain after exposure to a sublethal dose (1.8 kJ m-2) of UVB radiation.

The gamma-radiolysis of poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoromethyl vinyl ether) (TFE/PMVE) was investigated using chemical and mechanical analyses. The polymer was found to form an insoluble network with a dose of gelation of 15.8 kGy. Tensile and glass transition temperature measurements indicated the predominance of crosslinking, with optimal elastomeric properties reached in the dose range of 120 to 200 kGy. Photoacoustic FTIR spectroscopy CPAS) showed the formation of new carboxylic acid end groups on irradiation. These new end groups were shown to decrease the thermal oxidative stability of the crosslinked network as determined by thermal gravimetric analysis. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of the polymer at 77 K indicated the presence of radical precursors. A G-value of 1.1 was determined for radical production at 77 K. Comparison of radical concentrations for a copolymer with a different mole ratio of PMVE, indicated that the PMVE units contribute to scission reactions. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. The thermal and gamma-irradiation induced curing of two phenylethynyl terminated composite resin systems, DFB/BPF and PETI5A, was investigated. Thermal curing of these matrix resin samples was performed at a temperature of 360 degrees C, gamma irradiation of the samples was conducted at 300 degrees C at a dose rate of 2.2 kGy h(-1). The reaction and subsequent loss of ethynyl groups in the resins for both cure methods was demonstrated by observing the decrease of the 2215 cm(-1) peak in the Raman spectra of the resins. Fully cured resin samples were found to have glass transition temperatures of 244-246 degrees C and 278-280 degrees C for DFB/BPF and PETI5A respectively. Similar relationships between T-g and fractional conversion were observed in both resins. The apparent polymerization rate, R-p, for thermal cure at 360 degrees C, was found to be 4.79 x 10(-2)% s(-1) in PETI5A and 3.22 x 10(-2)% s(-1) in DFB/BPF. Catastrophic degradation under nitrogen was observed to commence near 450 degrees C and 530 degrees C, with 5% weight losses occurring at 455 degrees C and 540 degrees C for DFB/BPF and PETI5A respectively. Gamma radiation induced cure at 300 degrees C was shown to be feasible, with full cure being reached with doses of 40 kGy for DFB/BPF and 100 kGy for PETI5A.

Background and purpose: To evaluate biochemical control and treatment related toxicity of patients with localized adenocarcinoma of the prostate treated with high dose-rate brachytherapy (HDRB) combined with conventional 2D or 3D-conformal external beam irradiation (EBI). Material and methods: Four-hundred and three patients treated between December 2000 and March 2004. HDRB was delivered with three fractions of 5.5-7 Gy with a single implant, followed by 45 Gy delivered with 2D or 3D conformal EBI. Results: The median follow-up was 48.4 months. Biochemical failure (BF) occurred in 9.6% according to both ASTRO and Phoenix consensus criteria. Mean time to relapse was 13 and 26 months, respectively. The 5-year BF free survival using the ASTRO criteria was 94.3%, 86.9% and 86.6% for the low, intermediate and high risk groups, respectively; using Phoenix criteria, 92.4%, 88.0% and 85.3%, respectively. The only predictive factor of BF in the multivariate analysis by both ASTRO and Phoenix criteria was the presence of prostate nodules detected by digital palpation, and patients younger than 60 years presented a higher chance of failure using Phoenix criteria only. Conclusions: Treatment scheme is feasible and safe with good efficacy. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd All rights reserved. Radiotherapy and Oncology 98 (2011) 169-174

Gamma and beta radiation emitting radiopharmaceuticals are handled in nuclear medicine services, and in many cases there is only individual monitoring of gamma radiation. In this paper, the results obtained using a wrist dosimeter prototype (CaSO(4):Dy + Teflon pellets) show that the doses for workers occupationally exposed to beta radiation from (153)Sm are not negligible. It is important that this dose is evaluated, and it has to be taken into consideration in the individual monitoring system.

Meningiomas are recognized as the most common late complication following radiotherapy. However, cytogenetic studies in childhood atypical radiation-induced meningioma are sporadic, mainly because this condition generally occurs after a long latent period. In the present study we show the results of conventional and molecular cytogenetics in a 14-year-old boy with a secondary atypical meningioma. Apart from numerical changes, we found complex aberrations with the participation of chromosomes 1, 6 and 12. The invariable presence of loss of 1p was demonstrated by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis with probes directed to telomeric regions and by comparative genome hybridization (CGH). Previous cytogenetic studies on adult spontaneous and radiation-associated meningiomas showed loss of chromosome 22 as the most frequent change, followed by loss of the short arm of chromosome 1. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of highly complex chromosome aberrations in the pediatric setting of meningioma.

Blood irradiation can be performed using a dedicated blood irradiator or a teletherapy unit. A thermal device providing appropriate storage conditions during blood components irradiation with a teletherapy unit has been recently proposed. However, the most appropriated volume of the thermal device was not indicated. The goal of this study was to indicate the most appropriated blood volume for irradiation using a teletherapy unit in order to minimize both the dose heterogeneity in the volume and the blood irradiation time using these equipments. Theoretical and experimental methods were used to study the dose distribution in the blood volume irradiated using a linear accelerator and a cobalt-60 therapy machine. The calculation of absorbed doses in the middle plane of cylindrical acrylic volumes was accomplished by a treatment planning system. Experimentally, we also used cylindrical acrylic phantoms and thermoluminescent dosimeters to confirm the calculated doses. The data obtained were represented by isodose curves. We observed that an irradiation volume should have a height of 28 cm and a diameter of 28 cm and a height of 35 cm and a diameter of 35 cm, when the irradiation is to be performed by a linear accelerator and a cobalt-60 teletherapy unit, respectively. Calculated values of relative doses varied from 93% to 100% in the smaller volume, and from 66% to 100% in the largest one. A difference of 5.0%, approximately, was observed between calculated and experimental data. The size of these volumes permits the irradiation of blood bags in only one bath without compromising the homogeneity of the absorbed dose over the irradiated volume. Thus, these irradiation volumes can be recommend to minimize the irradiation time when a teletherapy unit is used to irradiate blood. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Purpose: The aims of this randomized controlled trial were to determine whether there were differences in the disease-free survival (DFS) and toxicity between conventional radiotherapy (CRT) and a continuous 3 week accelerated radiotherapy regimen (ART) in stage III and IV squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx and hypopharynx. Patients and methods: Patients from 14 centres throughout Australia and New Zealand were randomly assigned to either CRT, using a single 2 Gy/day to a dose of 70 Gy in 35 fractions in 49 days or to ART, using 1.8 Gy twice a day to a dose of 59.4 Gy in 33 fractions in 24 days. Treatment allocation was stratified for site and stage. The accrual began in 1991 and the trial was closed in 1998 when the target of 350 patients was reached. Results: The median potential follow-up time was 53 months (range, 14-101). The DFS at 5 years was 41% (95% CI, 33-50%) for ART and 35% (95% CI, 27-43%) for CRT (P = 0.323) and the hazard ratio was 0.87 in favour of ART (95% CI, 0.66-1.15). The 5-year disease-specific survival rates were 40% for CRT and 46% for ART (P = 0.398) and the loco-regional control was 47% for CRT vs. 52% for ART (P = 0.300). The respective hazard ratios were 0.88 (95% CI, 0.65-1.2) and 0.85 (0.62-1.16), favouring the accelerated arm. In the ART arm, confluent mucositis was more severe (94 vs. 71%; P < 0.001) and peaked about 3 weeks earlier than in the CRT arm, but healing appeared complete in all cases. There were statistically significant reductions in the probability of grade 2 or greater late soft tissue effects over time in the ART arm (P < 0.05), except for the mucous membrane where late effects were similar in both arms. Conclusions: Differences in DFS, disease-specific survival and loco-regional control have not been demonstrated. ART resulted in more acute mucosal toxicity, but this did not result in greater prolongation of the treatment time compared with the CRT arm. There were less late effects in the ART arm, with the exception of late mucosal effects. This trial has confirmed that tumour cell repopulation occurs during conventionally fractionated radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. However, it has also provided additional evidence that overall improvements in the therapeutic ratio using accelerated fractionation strategies are seriously constrained by the need to limit total doses to levels that do not exceed acute mucosal tolerance. The accelerated schedule tested has been shown in this trial to be an acceptable alternative to conventionally fractionated irradiation to 70 Gy. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd.
