A pin-on-disc apparatus has been used to investigate the wear and friction (sliding force) behavior of metals on bonded silicon carbide and alumina papers under conditions of controlled atmospheric composition. The wear rates of both commercial purity titanium and the alloy Ti-6%Al-4%V tested in air were found to remain constant with time, in contrast with the behavior of other metals tested under similar conditions, which exhibited a progressive decrease in wear rate with increasing number of passes along the same track. It is proposed that the concentration of interstitial nitrogen and oxygen in the worn metal surface, which largely determines its mechanical properties, strongly influences both the ductility of the abraded material and the force of adhesion between the metal and the abrasive particles. Parallels are drawn between abrasive wear and machining to illustrate the importance of oxygen at the interface between workpiece and tool surfaces.

A study to measure the heavy metal pollution level in the sediment of coastal and offshore area indicates that high concentration of heavy metals were found around Manora channel and eastern coast of Karachi. In comparison with coastal areas, relatively low concentration of heavy metals was recorded in the offshore area. The result shows that sewage and industrial wastes are the main source of heavy metal pollution in the coastal area. The concentration of heavy metals in the sediments is as follows: Chromium 10.4-33.69, nickel 13.3-47.6, lead 10.0-39.04, cadmium 0.08-0.21, zinc 7.4-73.2 and copper 9.44-18.56 mg/kg. In the offshore areas strong correlation was observed between copper and organic carbon, and calcium carbonate and cadmium. In the shore area such correlation has been recorded among nickel, chromium, zinc, and chromium and copper. The Karachi. coast is viewed as moderately polluted when compared to other continental coastal areas.

The present investigation is to assess the genotoxic potential of nickel chloride and zinc sulphate on gill cells of silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix. Fishes were exposed in sublethal concentration of nickel chloride 5. 7 mg/1 and zinc sulphate 6.8 mg/1, and sampled at 10, 20 and 30 days. Nickel chloride and zinc sulphate treated fishes exhibited an apparent increase in the aberration frequency and a decrease in the mitotic index as compared to control. Acentric fragment, chromatid break, endoreduplication, chromatid gap, centromeric fusion, ploidy, sticky plate, dicentric chromosome, clumping and partial sticky plates were some of the abnormalities observed. The chromosomal aberrations in the treated fishes were significant compared to control.

The importance of metal coating technologies drives the continuous improvement of metal deposition techniques for application in a wide range of industrial sectors. This work presents the foundations of a new process technology for the deposition of titanium coatings on steel tube substrates using supersonic powder streams and impact site laser heating, known as Supersonic Laser Deposition (SLD). Metallic deposits are obtained under appropriate impact conditions without the need for exceeding the melting point of the deposited material or substrate leading to improved coating quality. Details of the experimental approach are presented along with the general characteristics of the titanium coating produced using this novel coatings method. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Engineering developments, problems of marine corrosion, fouling and practical innovative applications of copper-nickel alloys in comparison with other materials for marine aquacultural engineering are presented. Coefficient of drag and hydrodynamic force acting on nylon and polyethylene net enclosures have shown a four-fold increase of force in four months at the Cochin harbour due to fouling. Corrosion behaviour of copper-nickel and other copper base alloys are also presented. Effects of copper additions to culture water are reviewed.

The electrical and structural characteristics of tantalum-titanium bilayers on silicon reacted by electron beam heating have been investigated over a wide range of temperature and time conditions. The reacted layers exhibit low sheet resistance and stable electrical characteristics up to at least 1100℃. Titanium starts reacting from 750℃ onwards for 100 milliseconds reaction times whereas tantalum starts reacting only above 900℃ for such short reaction times. RBS results confirm that silicon is the major diffusing species and there is no evidence for the formation of ternary silicides. Reactions have also been explored on millisecond time scales by non-isothermal heating.

We report on graphene-passivated ferromagnetic electrodes (GPFE) for spin devices. GPFE are shown to act as spin-polarized oxidation-resistant electrodes. The direct coating of nickel with few layer graphene through a readily scalable chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process allows the preservation of an unoxidized nickel surface upon air exposure. Fabrication and measurement of complete reference tunneling spin valve structures demonstrate that the GPFE is maintained as a spin polarizer and also that the presence of the graphene coating leads to a specific sign reversal of the magneto-resistance. Hence, this work highlights a novel oxidation-resistant spin source which further unlocks low cost wet chemistry processes for spintronics devices.

The findings presented herein show that the electronic properties of CVD graphene on nickel can be altered from metallic to semiconducting by introducing oxygen adsorbates via UV/ozone or oxygen plasma treatment. These properties can be partially recovered by removing the oxygen adsorbates via vacuum annealing treatment. The effect of oxidation is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As probed by STM/STS, an energy gap opening of 0.11-0.15 eV is obtainable as the oxygen/carbon atomic ratio reaches 13-16%. The corresponding XPS spectra show a significant monotonic increase in the concentration of oxygenated functional groups due to the oxidation treatments. This study demonstrates that the opening of energy gap in CVD graphene can be reasonably controlled by a combination of UV/ozone or oxygen plasma treatment and vacuum annealing treatment. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

We report on improved electrical properties of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) film deposited on titanium metal foil using nitrogen annealing. After nitrogen annealing of the PZT capacitors, symmetric capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics, higher dielectric constant and breakdown field, less change of dielectric constant with frequency, lower dielectric loss and leakage current are obtained. Titanium and zirconia are bioinert materials lacking bioactivity. In this work, surface modification of the two typical biomaterials is conducted by Mg-ion-implantation using a MEVVA ion source in an attempt to increase their bioactivity. Mg ions were implanted into zirconia and titanium with fluences ranging from 1 x 10(17) to 3 x 10(17) ions/cm(2) at 40 keV. The Mg-implanted samples, as well as control (unimplanted) samples, were immersed in SBF for 7 days and then removed to identify the presence of calcium and phosphate (Ca-P) coatings and to characterize their morphology and structure by SEM, XRD, and FT-IR. SEM observations confirm that globular aggregates are formed on the surfaces of the Mg-implanted zirconia and titanium while no precipitates are observed on the control samples. XRD and FT-IR analyses reveal that the deposits are carbonated hydroxyapatite (HAp). Our experimental results demonstrate that Mg-implantation improves the bioactivity of zirconia and titanium. Further, it is found that the degree of bioactivity is adjustable by the ion dose. Mechanisms are proposed to interpret the improvement of bioactivity as a result of Mg implantation and the difference in bioactivity between zirconia and titanium. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The atomic structures and electronic properties of small Ti-N (N=2-10) clusters have been studied by using the density-functional theory with a local spin density approximation. We find that the inner-shells (3s3p) of the titanium atom plays an important role in the formation of the small clusters. We have obtained the ground state of titanium clusters, Ti-7 is found to be a magic cluster, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. Starting with Ti-8 cluster some features of the electronic structure of the titanium bulk have been developed. The ionization potentials and magnetic moments for these small titanium clusters are also presented. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0021- 9606(00)30544-X].

With naphthalene as biomass tar model compound, partial oxidation reforming (with addition of O-2) and dry reforming of biomass fuel gas were investigated over nickel-based monoliths at the same conditions. The results showed that both processes had excellent performance in upgrading biomass raw fuel gas. Above 99% of naphthalene was converted into synthesis gases (H-2+CO). About 2.8 wt% of coke deposition was detected on the catalyst surface for dry reforming process at 750 degrees C during 108 h lifetime test. However, no Coke deposition was detected for partial oxidation reforming process, which indicated that addition of O-2 can effectively prohibit the coke formation. O-2 Can also increase the CH4 conversion and H-2/CO ratio of the producer gas. The average conversion of CH4 in dry and partial oxidation reforming process was 92% and 95%, respectively. The average H-2/CO ratio increased from 0.95 to 1.1 with the addition of O-2, which was suitable to be used as synthesis gas for dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis.

A highly sensitive microstructured polymer optical fiber (MPOF) probe for hydrogen peroxide was made by forming a rhodamine 6G-doped titanium dioxide film on the side walls of array holes in an MPOF. It was found that hydrogen peroxide only has a response to the MPOF probe in a certain concentration of potassium iodide in sulfuric acid solution. The calibration graph of fluorescence intensity versus hydrogen peroxide concentration is linear in the range of 1.6 x 10(-7) mol/L to 9.6 x 10(-5) mol/L. The method, with high sensitivity and a wide linear range, has been applied to the determination of trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide in a few real samples, such as rain water and contact lens disinfectant, with satisfactory results.
