Nearly one million Asian Indians have immigrated to the United States. Asian Indians are scattered across wide geographic areas. While some have chosen transnationalism, most are taking the traditional route of building ethnic communities. Using what the West has to offer in terms of communication and transportation technologies, they are constructing communities without geographic boundaries, with the extensive use of the automobile and air transportation, cellular phones, FAX machines, commercial delivery services, multi-party conference phones. Also, they are incorporating the American tradition of immigrant associations into an Asian Indian syncretism of community. In the process there emerges an Asian Indian identity and concept of kinship and community. ^

© 2016 Elsevier Ltd.The early Miocene Santa Cruz Formation (SCF) in southern Patagonia hosts the Santacrucian South American Land Mammal Age (SALMA), whose age is known mainly from exposures along the Atlantic coast. Zircon U-Pb ages were obtained from intercalated tuffs from four inland sections of the SCF: 17.36 ± 0.63 Ma for the westernmost Río Bote locality, and 17.04 ± 0.55 Ma-16.32 ± 0.62 Ma for central Río Santa Cruz localities. All ages agree with the bounding age of underlying marine units and with equivalent strata in coastal exposures. New ages and available sedimentation rates imply time spans for each section of ~18.2 to 17.36 Ma for Río Bote and 17.45-15.63 Ma for central Río Santa Cruz (Burdigalian). These estimates support the view that deposition of the SCF began at western localities ~1 Ma earlier than at eastern localities, and that the central Río Santa Cruz localities expose the youngest SCF in southern Santa Cruz Province. Associated vertebrate faunas are consistent with our geochronologic synthesis, showing older (Notohippidian) taxa in western localities and younger (Santacrucian) taxa in central localities. The Notohippidian fauna (19.0-18.0 Ma) of the western localities is synchronous with Pinturan faunas (19.0-18.0 Ma), but older than Santacrucian faunas of the Río Santa Cruz (17.2-15.6 Ma) and coastal localities (18.0-16.2 Ma). The Santacrucian faunas of the central Río Santa Cruz localities temporally overlap Colloncuran (15.7 Ma), Friasian (16.5 Ma), and eastern Santacrucian faunas.

This paper focuses on two basic issues: the anxiety-generating nature of the interpreting task and the relevance of interpreter trainees’ academic self-concept. The first has already been acknowledged, although not extensively researched, in several papers, and the second has only been mentioned briefly in interpreting literature. This study seeks to examine the relationship between the anxiety and academic self-concept constructs among interpreter trainees. An adapted version of the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (Horwitz et al., 1986), the Academic Autoconcept Scale (Schmidt, Messoulam & Molina, 2008) and a background information questionnaire were used to collect data. Students’ t-Test analysis results indicated that female students reported experiencing significantly higher levels of anxiety than male students. No significant gender difference in self-concept levels was found. Correlation analysis results suggested, on the one hand, that younger would-be interpreters suffered from higher anxiety levels and students with higher marks tended to have lower anxiety levels; and, on the other hand, that younger students had lower self-concept levels and higher-ability students held higher self-concept levels. In addition, the results revealed that students with higher anxiety levels tended to have lower self-concept levels. Based on these findings, recommendations for interpreting pedagogy are discussed.

The synthesis and differential antiproliferative activity of monastrol (1a), oxo-monastrol (1b) and eight oxygenated derivatives 3a,b–6a,b on seven human cancer cell lines are described. For all evaluated cell lines, monastrol (1a) was shown to be more active than its oxo-analogue, except for HT-29 cell line, suggesting the importance of the sulfur atom for the antiproliferative activity. Monastrol (1a) and the thio-derivatives 3a, 4a and 6a displayed relevant antiproliferative properties with 3,4-methylenedioxy derivative 6a being approximately more than 30 times more potent than monastrol (1a) against colon cancer (HT-29) cell line.

Selon Schaefer (1991), il y aurait un manque de connaissance des caractéristiques parentales qui seraient liées à la performance académique et aux habiletés adaptatives des élèves du primaire et du secondaire. Une meilleure compréhension de ces caractéristiques pourrait permettre d'intervenir directement sur le milieu d'éducation primaire du jeune, soit la famille, pour améliorer ses performances scolaires et ses comportements adaptatifs. Krieller, entre autres, (1976; voir Schaefer, 1991), s'est intéressé aux caractéristiques parentales : selon lui, les normes de comportements favorisés par les parents pour eux-mêmes et les enfants seraient directement liées aux croyances et aux comportements de l'enfant. Plusieurs chercheurs rapportent que des caractéristiques parentales telles le niveau d'éducation (Kohn, 1969, Alwin, 1984; voir Schaefer, 1991), les attitudes et les valeurs face à l'éducation (Schaefer et Edgerton, 1985; voir Schaefer, 1991), seraient liées aux pratiques éducatives des parents. Par exemple, l'autoritarisme parental serait lié à un faible niveau de scolarité des parents et à un système de valeurs axé sur l'encadrement rigide et l'obéissance, alors que le style parental démocratique serait lié à un plus haut niveau d'éducation et à des valeurs axées sur l'encadrement souple et l’autonomisation (Becker et Krug, 1985; voir Schaefer, 1991). D'autres chercheurs ont établi qu'il existait un lien entre le type de croyance parentale et les pratiques éducatives et la performance scolaire et l'adaptation des élèves (Baumrind, 1971, 1973; voir Dornbush, 1987 : Dornbuah, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1992); par exemple, les jeunes qui ont des parents démocratiques (qualité de la supervision) bénéficient d'une meilleure supervision et ils sont mieux adaptés et plus performants en milieu scolaire. L'ensemble des recherches précitées établit clairement qu'il existe des liens significatifs entre les croyances parentales, les pratiques éducatives et l'adaptation et la performance des jeunes en milieu scolaire.

Background: Patients with lupus nephritis could progress to endstage renal disease (10-22%); hence, kidney transplants should be considered as the treatment of choice for these patients. Objective: To evaluate the clinical outcomes after kidney transplants in patients with chronic kidney diseases secondary to lupus nephritis, polycystic kidney disease and diabetes nephropathy at Pablo Tobon Uribe Hospital. Methods: A descriptive and retrospective study performed at one kidney transplant center between 2005 and 2013. Results: A total of 136 patients, 27 with lupus nephritis (19.9%), 31 with polycystic kidney disease (22.8%) and 78 with diabetes nephropathy (57.4%), were included in the study. The graft survivals after one, three and five years were 96.3%, 82.5% and 82.5% for lupus nephritis; 90%, 86% and 76.5% for polycystic kidney disease and 91.7%, 80.3% and 67.9% for diabetes nephropathy, respectively, with no significant differences (p= 0.488); the rate of lupus nephritis recurrence was 0.94%/person-year. The etiology of lupus vs diabetes vs polycystic disease was not a risk factor for a decreased time of graft survival (Hazard ratio: 1.43; 95% CI: 0.52-3.93). Conclusion: Kidney transplant patients with end stage renal disease secondary to lupus nephritis has similar graft and patient survival success rates to patients with other kidney diseases. The complication rate and risk of recurrence for lupus nephritis are low. Kidney transplants should be considered as the treatment of choice for patients with end stage renal disease secondary to lupus nephritis.

La cercanía geográfica y los vínculos históricos existentes entre Francia y África mantienen hasta la actualidad unas relaciones enmarcadas en un escenario de cooperación entre ambos. Sin embargo, el creciente número de migrantes de 1999 a 2013 desde las antiguas excolonias francesas, Malí y Senegal, llevó a Francia a impulsar una serie de herramientas para el codesarrollo, es decir, un conjunto de estrategias para que el migrante fuera un vector de desarrollo no solo para Francia sino para sus países de orígen. En ese sentido, este artículo pretende evaluar el codesarrollo como una herramienta discursiva de la política exterior francesa –a través del método de análisis del discurso de Teun van Dijk– en la cual ha prevalecido el poscolonialismo como una ideología que refleja una relación poder-conocimiento.
