The literature relating to the drying characteristics of pure liquid drops and particulate slurry drops has been reviewed. The experimental investigation was, therefore, divided into three parts: Pure water drops, Aqueous sodium sulphate decahydrate drops, and, Slurry drops from nine detergent formulations. The value of the constant,'Ψ, reported by Ranz and Marshall, was found to be temperature dependent. In the temperature range o 26.5≤T≤118.5°C,Ψ , for pure water drops, varied between 0.38 and 0.47. A revised correlation of the mass transfer coefficients is therefore proposed.  A mathematical model for estimating the variation of crust thickness, for aqueous sodium sulphate drops, with time is proposed: β = R _ {R3 - ( 1.5G/πCo ) ( ΔHD - ΔHU) Δ} 1/3 Experimental crust thickness evaluated from stereoscan micrographs showed good agreement with theoretical prediction. It has been shown that drying characteristics of detergent drops can be evaluated from the porosity:thickness ratio, {ε/\β}. Formulations having large {ε/β I-ratios dry better than those with smaller values. The agreement between the experimental and theoretical mass transfer coefficients shows, in addition to the above correlation, that the overall mass transfer coefficient can be predicted from the expression1/K = 1/K + β/DMε 1.5 The crust is the controlling resistance to transfer in particulate slurry drops. For aqueous sodium sulphate drops, the crust provides 64.2% of the total resistance while for detergents with thicker, but less porous crusts, the value is 97.5%.

Samples of Various industrial or pilot plant spray-dried materials were obtained from manufacturers together with details of drying conditions and feed concentrations. The samples were subjected to qualitative and semi-quantitative examination to identify structural and morphological features. The results were related to measured bulk physical properties and to drying conditions. Single particles were produced in a convective drying process Analogous to spray drying, in which different solids or mixtures of solids were dried from solutions, slurries or pastes as single suspended droplets. The localized chemical and physical structures were analysed and in some cases the retention of volatiles monitored. The results were related to experimental conditions, viz.; air temperature, initial solids concentration and the degree of feed aeration. Three distinct categories of particle morphology were identified, i.e.; crystalline, skin-forming and agglomerate. Each category is evidence of a characteristic drying behaviour which is dependent on initial solids concentration. the degree of feed aeration, and drying temperature. Powder flow ability, particle and bulk density, particle-size, particle friability, and the retention of volatiles bear a direct relationship to morphological structure. Morphologies of multicomponent mixtures were complex, but the respective migration rates of the solutes were dependent on drying temperature. Gas-film heat and SDSS transfer coefficients of single pure liquid droplets were also measured over a temperature range of 50•C to 200•C under forced convection. Balanced transfer rates were obtained attributed to droplet instability or oscillation within the airflow, demonstrated in associated work with single free-flight droplets. The results are of relevance to drier optimisation and to the optimisation of product characteristics, e.g.; particle strength and essential volatiles-retention, in convective drying.

The literature on the evaporation of pure liquid drops and the drying of drops of solutions and slurries has been reviewed with particular reference to spray drying. A 0.1-0.2 mm glass filament-thermocouple was constructed and used to study simultaneously, heat and mass transfer from a single suspended drop placed in a humidity and temperature controlled, 28 mm OD vertical wind tunnel. Heat conduction through the filament was minimised eg at 100¦C it accounted for only 9.3% of the total heat transferred to a drop. Evaporation of single water drops was also studied in a 101 mm OD vertical wind tunnel. The Nusselt number was found to be a function of the Reynolds, Prandtl and Transfer number over an air temperature range of 17¦C to 107¦C. The proposed correlation is: Nu = 2+(-12.96B+0.76)Re¦-5Pr0-33 Experimental drying studies were carried out on single suspended 1 to 2.5 mm diameter drops of aqueous sodium sulphate decahydrate, sodium chloride, potassium sulphate, copper sulphate and sodium acetate solutions and slurries at temperatures of 20¦C to 124¦C. Dried crusts were examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The drying history of any material depended upon the nature of the crust formed. Sodium acetate formed a non-rigid skin prior to the formation of a rigid crust. A modified receding evaporation interface model was proposed for the drying of solutions and slurries. This covered both the constant rate period prior to crust formation and the subsequent falling rate period. The model was solved numerically for the variation in core temperature, drop weight and crust thickness. Good agreement was obtained between model predictions and experimental results for materials forming rigid crusts i.e. sodium sulphate decahydrate, sodium chloride, potassium sulphate and copper sulphate. However, the drying histories of drops of 10-20% weight initial concentration sodium acetate were unpredictable since formation of a non-rigid skin deviated from the model assumption of a rigid outer surface. At higher initial concentrations (40% weight) where a rigid crust was formed for sodium acetate, good agreement was obtained between experimental results and model predictions. Single suspended drop studies are concluded to provide a valuable insight into the drying mechanisms of specific solutions and slurries.

We report a novel real-time homodyne coherent receiver based on a DPSK optical-electrical-optical (OEO) regenerator used to extract a carrier from carrier-less phase modulated signals based on feed-forward based modulation stripping. The performance of this non-DSP based coherent receiver was evaluated for 10.66Gbit/s BPSK signals. Self-homodyne coherent detection and homodyne detection with an injection-locked local oscillator laser was demonstrated. The performance was evaluated by measuring the electrical signal-to-noise (SNR) and recording the eye diagrams. Using injection-locking for the LO improves the performance and enables homodyne detection with optical injection-locking to operate with carrier-less BPSK signals without the need for polarization multiplexed pilot-tones.

We experimentally demonstrate a novel synchronous 10.66Gbit/s DPSK OEO regenerator which uses a feed-forward carrier extraction scheme with an injection-locked laser to synchronize the regenerated signal wavelength to the incoming signal wavelength. After injection-locking, a low-cost DFB laser used at the regenerator exhibited the same linewidth characteristics as the narrow line-width transmitter laser. The phase regeneration properties of the regenerator were evaluated by emulating random Gaussian phase noise applied to the DPSK signal before the regenerator using a phase modulator driven by an arbitrary waveform generator. The overall performance was evaluated in terms of electrical eye-diagrams, BER measurements, and constellation diagrams.

We numerically investigate the combination of full-field detection and feed-forward equalizer (FFE) for adaptive chromatic dispersion compensation up to 2160 km in a 10 Gbit/s on-off keyed optical transmission system. The technique, with respect to earlier reports, incorporates several important implementation modules, including the algorithm for adaptive equalization of the gain imbalance between the two receiver chains, compensation of phase misalignment of the asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and simplified implementation of field calculation. We also show that in addition to enabling fast adaptation and simplification of field calculation, full-field FFE exhibits enhanced tolerance to the sampling phase misalignment and reduced sampling rate when compared to the full-field implementation using a dispersive transmission line.

In their policy proposals on how best to stimulate economic growth, economists have been increasingly emphasizing free markets. It is, however, possible that free-market-led economic growth can lead to increased income inequity which can further increase poverty. One of the more interesting but thus far insufficiently explored mechanisms for the latter is food–feed competition. Using Peruvian Living Standard Survey (PLSS) data for 1985–86 and 1990, the paper examines the demand patterns of households and concludes that the empirical evidence is in agreement with the hypotheses underlying the theory of food–feed competition.

Direct-drive linear reciprocating compressors offer numerous advantages over conventional counterparts which are usually driven by a rotary induction motor via a crank shaft. However, to ensure efficient and reliable operation under all conditions, it is essential that motor current of a linear compressor follows a sinusoidal current command with a frequency which matches the system resonant frequency. The design of a high-performance current controller for linear compressor drive presents a challenge since the system is highly nonlinear, and an effective solution must be low cost. In this paper, a learning feed-forward current controller for the linear compressors is proposed. It comprises a conventional feedback proportional-integral controller and a feed-forward B-spline neural network (BSNN). The feed-forward BSNN is trained online and in real time in order to minimize the current tracking error. Extensive simulation and experiment results with a prototype linear compressor show that the proposed current controller exhibits high steady state and transient performance. © 2009 IEEE.

A recent novel approach to the visualisation and analysis of datasets, and one which is particularly applicable to those of a high dimension, is discussed in the context of real applications. A feed-forward neural network is utilised to effect a topographic, structure-preserving, dimension-reducing transformation of the data, with an additional facility to incorporate different degrees of associated subjective information. The properties of this transformation are illustrated on synthetic and real datasets, including the 1992 UK Research Assessment Exercise for funding in higher education. The method is compared and contrasted to established techniques for feature extraction, and related to topographic mappings, the Sammon projection and the statistical field of multidimensional scaling.

The activity of a silica-supported BF3–methanol solid acid catalyst in the cationic polymerisation of an industrial aromatic C9 feedstock has been investigated. Reuse has been achieved under continuous conditions. Titration of the catalyst acid sites with triethylphosphine oxide (TEPO) in conjunction with 31P MAS NMR shows the catalyst to have two types of acid sites. Further analysis with 2,6 di-tert-butyl-4-methylpyridine (DBMP) has revealed the majority of these acid sites to be Brønsted in nature. The role of α-methylstyrene in promoting resin polymerisation via chain transfer is proposed.

This paper is about the development and the application of an ESRI ArcGIS tool which implements multi-layer, feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) to study the climate envelope of species. The supervised learning is achieved by backpropagation algorithm. Based on the distribution and the grids of the climate (and edaphic data) of the reference and future periods the tool predicts the future potential distribution of the studied species. The trained network can be saved and loaded. A modeling result based on the distribution of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) is presented as a case study.
