There has been a significant body of literature on species flock definition but not so much about practical means to appraise them. We here apply the five criteria of Eastman and McCune for detecting species flocks in four taxonomic components of the benthic fauna of the Antarctic shelf: teleost fishes, crinoids (feather stars), echinoids (sea urchins) and crustacean arthropods. Practical limitations led us to prioritize the three historical criteria (endemicity, monophyly, species richness) over the two ecological ones (ecological diversity and habitat dominance). We propose a new protocol which includes an iterative fine-tuning of the monophyly and endemicity criteria in order to discover unsuspected flocks. As a result nine « full » species flocks (fulfilling the five criteria) are briefly described. Eight other flocks fit the three historical criteria but need to be further investigated from the ecological point of view (here called « core flocks »). The approach also shows that some candidate taxonomic components are no species flocks at all. The present study contradicts the paradigm that marine species flocks are rare. The hypothesis according to which the Antarctic shelf acts as a species flocks generator is supported, and the approach indicates paths for further ecological studies and may serve as a starting point to investigate the processes leading to flock-like patterning of biodiversity. © 2013 Lecointre et al.

The neutron multidetector DéMoN has been used to investigate the symmetric splitting dynamics in the reactions 58.64Ni + 208Pb with excitation energies ranging from 65 to 186 MeV for the composite system. An analysis based on the new backtracing technique has been applied on the neutron data to determine the two-dimensional correlations between the parent composite system initial thermal energy (EthCN) and the total neutron multiplicity (νtot), and between pre- and post-scission neutron multiplicities (νpre and νpost, respectively). The νpre distribution shape indicates the possible coexistence of fast-fission and fusion-fission for the system 58Ni + 208Pb (Ebeam = 8.86 A MeV). The analysis of the neutron multiplicities in the framework of the combined dynamical statistical model (CDSM) gives a reduced friction coefficient β = 23 ± 2512 × 1021 s-1, above the one-body dissipation limit. The corresponding fission time is τf = 40 ± 4620 × 10-21 s. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A 3D time-dependent model of the VAR process has been developed using CFD techniques. The model solves the coupled field equations for fluid flow, heat transfer (including phase change) and electromagnetic field, for both the electrode and the ingot. The motion of the electic arc 'preferred spot' can be specified based on observations. Correlations are sought between the local gap height, resulting from instantaneous liquid pool surface shape and electrode tip shape, and the arc motion. The detailed behaviour of the melting film on the electrode tip is studies using a spectral free surface technique, which allows investigation of the drops' detachment and drip shorts.

Ag+- and Zn2+-exchanged zeolites zeolites and clays have been used as coatings and in composites to confer broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties on a range of technical and biomedical materials. 11 angstrom tobermorite is a bioactive layer lattice ion exchanger whose potential as a carrier for Ag+ and Zn2+ ions in antimicrobial formulations has not yet been explored. In view of this, batch Ag+- and Zn2+-exchange kinetics of two structurally distinct synthetic 11 angstrom tobermorites and their subsequent bactericidal action against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are reported. During the exchange reactions, Ag+ ions were found to replace labile interlayer cations; whereas, Zn2+ ions also displaced structural Ca2+ ions from the tobermorite lattice. In spite of these different mechanisms, a simple pseudo-second-order model provided a suitable description of both exchange processes (R-2 >= 0.996). The Ag+- and Zn2+-exchanged tobermorite phases exhibited marked bacteriostatic effects against both bacteria, and accordingly, their potential for use as antimicrobial materials for in situ bone tissue regeneration is discussed. Solid-state protonated and N,O-deuterated Fourier transform infrared (IR) and Raman scattering spectra together with the protonated and deuterated Raman spectra in aqueous solution of the cyclic di-amino acid peptide cyclo(L-Asp-L-Asp) are reported. Vibrational band assignments have been made on the basis of comparisons with previously cited literature values for diketopiperazine (DKP) derivatives and normal coordinate analyses for both the protonated and deuterated species based upon DFT calculations at the B3-LYP/cc-pVDZ level of the isolated molecule in the gas phase. The calculated minimum energy structure for cyclo(L-Asp-L-Asp), assuming C-2 symmetry, predicts a boat conformation for the DKP ring with both the two L-aspartyl side chains being folded slightly above the ring. The C=O stretching vibrations have been assigned for the side-chain carboxylic acid group (e.g. at 1693 and 1670 cm(-1) in the Raman spectrum) and the cis amide I bands (e.g. at 1660 cm(-1) in the Raman spectrum). The presence of two bands for the carboxylic acid C=O stretching modes in the solid-state Raman spectrum can be accounted for by factor group splitting of the two nonequivalent molecules in a crystallographic unit cell. The cis amide II band is observed at 1489 cm(-1) in the solid-state Raman spectrum, which is in agreement with results for cyclic di-amino acid peptide molecules examined previously in the solid state, where the DKP ring adopts a boat conformation. Additionally, it also appears that as the molecular mass of the substituent on the C-alpha atom is increased, the amide II band wavenumber decreases to below 1500 cm(-1); this may be a consequence of increased strain on the DKP ring. The cis amide II Raman band is characterized by its relatively small deuterium shift (29 cm(-1)), which indicates that this band has a smaller N-H bending contribution than the trans amide II vibrational band observed for linear peptides.

Whether a small cell, a small genome or a minimal set of chemical reactions with self-replicating properties, simplicity is beguiling. As Leonardo da Vinci reportedly said, 'simplicity is the ultimate sophistication'. Two diverging views of simplicity have emerged in accounts of symbiotic and commensal bacteria and cosmopolitan free-living bacteria with small genomes. The small genomes of obligate insect endosymbionts have been attributed to genetic drift caused by small effective population sizes (Ne). In contrast, streamlining theory attributes small cells and genomes to selection for efficient use of nutrients in populations where Ne is large and nutrients limit growth. Regardless of the cause of genome reduction, lost coding potential eventually dictates loss of function. Consequences of reductive evolution in streamlined organisms include atypical patterns of prototrophy and the absence of common regulatory systems, which have been linked to difficulty in culturing these cells. Recent evidence from metagenomics suggests that streamlining is commonplace, may broadly explain the phenomenon of the uncultured microbial majority, and might also explain the highly interdependent (connected) behavior of many microbial ecosystems. Streamlining theory is belied by the observation that many successful bacteria are large cells with complex genomes. To fully appreciate streamlining, we must look to the life histories and adaptive strategies of cells, which impose minimum requirements for complexity that vary with niche.

Few studies have addressed the relationship between law and power in the works of Michel Foucault. Some authors emphasize that law performs a completely secondary role in the diagram of power of modernity, while others argue that there is a close link between power relations and the law. Foucault's Law by Golden and Fitzpatrick aims to renew these discussions and reconstruct another law of Foucault. In this paper I make a critical reading of this work, highlighting the faulty presentation that the authors carried out of the works of Foucault.

The density of metastable helium atoms in a dielectric barrier discharge operating in helium with some impurities present has been measured using laser-collisional-induced fluorescence and absorption techniques. Time-resolved measurements indicate that helium metastables contribute to the production of impurity ions, in this case N-2(+), in the postdischarge current phase of a glow discharge. In our particular discharge environment, the helium metastable density is (1.5+/-1.4)x10(10) cm(-3), a result consistent with failure to observe absorption by metastables in a multipass absorption measurement. As semiconductor electronic devices scale to the nanometer range and quantum structures (molecules, fullerenes, quantum dots, nanotubes) are investigated for use in information processing and storage, it, becomes useful to explore the limits imposed by quantum mechanics on classical computing. To formulate the problem of a quantum mechanical description of classical computing, electronic device and logic gates are described as quantum sub-systems with inputs treated as boundary conditions, outputs expressed.is operator expectation values, and transfer characteristics and logic operations expressed through the sub-system Hamiltonian. with constraints appropriate to the boundary conditions. This approach, naturally, leads to a description of the subsystem.,, in terms of density matrices. Application of the maximum entropy principle subject to the boundary conditions (inputs) allows for the determination of the density matrix (logic operation), and for calculation of expectation values of operators over a finite region (outputs). The method allows for in analysis of the static properties of quantum sub-systems.
