Effect of resin composites with sodium trimetaphosphate with or without fluoride on hardness, ion release and enamel demineralization

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the addition of sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) with or without fluoride on enamel demineralization, and the hardness and release of fluoride and TMP of resin composites. Methods: Bovine enamel slabs (4x3x3 mm) were prepared and selected based on initial surface hardness (n= 96). Eight experimental resin composites were formulated, according to the combination of TMP and sodium fluoride (NaF): TMP/NaF-free (control), 1.6% sodium fluoride (NaF), and 1.5%, 14.1% and 36.8% TMP with and without 1.6% NaF. Resin composite specimens (n= 24) were attached to the enamel slabs with wax and the sets were subjected to pH cycling. Next, surface and cross-sectional hardness and fluoride content of enamel as well as fluoride and TNT release and hardness of the materials were evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA (P< 0.05). Results: The presence of fluoride in enamel was similar in fluoridated resin composites (P> 0.05), but higher than in the other materials (P< 0.05). The combination of 14.1% TMP and fluoride resulted in less demineralization, especially on lesion surface (P< 0.05). The presence of TMP increased fluoride release from the materials and reduced their hardness.

Dog with hydronephrosis due to abdominal trauma

Hydronephrosis is a condition that results from complete or partial obstruction of the urinary flow. This paper reports the case of a two-year-old, mixed-breed dog diagnosed with hydronephrosis of the left kidney six months after being kicked in the thoraco-abdominal region. The diagnosis was based on radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations. Percutaneous antegrade pyelography was also performed and allowed the visualization of opacification of the left kidney, which confirmed the diagnosis. Because the exams indicated that the patient had normal renal function, nephrectomy was performed. The patient remained in good health during the postoperative period and in subsequent evaluations. The Lagoa Feia Group (Early Cretaceous) is widely distributed around the Campos Basin, forming deep prospects in the basin. It has two large coquinas platforms shellfish, and the lower deck constituent important reservoir in the southwestern of this basin, a producer of oil in the trend-Badejo-Linguado-Pampo. Due to the rising national energy demand is necessary to see the incorporation of technical knowledge and training of human resources in the knowledge of petroleum reservoirs. In this sense, the Pampo Field, as well as other fields of the trend, fall as interesting target area for study. Accumulations of hydrocarbons are partitioning structural - stratigraphic only for the three fields. They are mixed origin of traps, with influence of structural, stratigraphic and diagenetic. With the development of catchment areas of the latter condition has manifested itself in such a way to verify parts with nonproducing wells, which are observed in the intervals coquinas are closed, with reduced thickness and / or low quality porous. The understanding of these accumulations, by testing structural, stratigraphic and reservoir and the use of geological and geophysical techniques, will bring a better understanding of the portions relating to economic accumulation or subeconomic development of hydrocarbons in this region, contributing to the scientific knowledge of the Pampo Field.

The Lanz® endotracheal tube decreases tracheal injury in dogs

Purpose: To determine, in dogs anesthetized with nitrous oxide (N2O), whether the endotracheal tube (ETT) cuffed with a Lanz® pressure regulating valve decreases the tracheal consequences of tracheal intubation. Methods: Sixteen mixed-breed dogs were allocated to two groups according to the ETT used: Control group (n = 8) - Rüsch ETT, and Lanz group (n = 8) - ETT with Lanz® pressure regulating valve. The ETT cuffs in both groups were inflated with air to an intracuff pressure of 30 cm H2O. Anesthesia was induced and maintained with pentobarbitone and N2O (1.5 L·min-1) and O2 (1 L·min-1). ETT cuff pressures were measured before (control) and 60, 120, and 180 min during N2O administration. The dogs were sacrificed, and biopsy specimens from four predetermined areas of the tracheal mucosa in contact with the ETT were collected for light and scanning electron microscopy (SM) examination. Results: Cuff pressures in the Control group were higher than in the Lanz group at all time points studied (P < 0.001), with an increase over time only in the Control group (P < 0.001). Median neutrophilic inflammatory infiltration values of the epithelial surface, and in the subepithelial layer in contact with the cuff, were higher in the Control group as compared to the Lanz group (3.0 vs 1.0 and 3.0 vs 1.5 respectively) (P < 0.05). On SM examination, median histological grades were higher in the Control group compared to Lanz group (2.9 vs 1.9 respectively), (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The Lanz® ETT decreases tracheal mucosal injury in dogs.
