We offer micro-econometric evidence for a positive impact of rural electrification on the nutritional status of children under five as measured by height-for-age Z-score (HAZ) in rural Bangladesh. In most estimates, access to electricity is found to improve HAZ by more than 0.15 points and this positive impact comes from increased wealth and reduced fertility, even though the evidence for the latter is weak. We also analyze the causal channels through the local health facility and exposure to television. We find no evidence for the presence of the former channel and mixed evidence for the latter.

This study quantitatively explores the changing population geography in Bengal, with a particular focus on Partition in India in 1947 and Independence of Bangladesh in 1971. Based on decadal census data from 1901 to 2001 at the district level, this paper explores how trends in regional population growth evolved with such historical events. Following Redding and Sturm (2008), Differences-in-Differences estimation is also employed. Estimation results show that there were different shocks on both sides and from both events. In West Bengal, the change in the regional population trends occurred in 1947 and remained similar thereafter. On the other hand, in East Bengal, the population growth became statistically significant after 1971. Further robustness checks show that the impacts were not uniform with respect to the distance from the border. Overall analyses show that the emergence of the international border in Bengal had asymmetric impacts on both sides.

The research in this thesis is related to static cost and termination analysis. Cost analysis aims at estimating the amount of resources that a given program consumes during the execution, and termination analysis aims at proving that the execution of a given program will eventually terminate. These analyses are strongly related, indeed cost analysis techniques heavily rely on techniques developed for termination analysis. Precision, scalability, and applicability are essential in static analysis in general. Precision is related to the quality of the inferred results, scalability to the size of programs that can be analyzed, and applicability to the class of programs that can be handled by the analysis (independently from precision and scalability issues). This thesis addresses these aspects in the context of cost and termination analysis, from both practical and theoretical perspectives. For cost analysis, we concentrate on the problem of solving cost relations (a form of recurrence relations) into closed-form upper and lower bounds, which is the heart of most modern cost analyzers, and also where most of the precision and applicability limitations can be found. We develop tools, and their underlying theoretical foundations, for solving cost relations that overcome the limitations of existing approaches, and demonstrate superiority in both precision and applicability. A unique feature of our techniques is the ability to smoothly handle both lower and upper bounds, by reversing the corresponding notions in the underlying theory. For termination analysis, we study the hardness of the problem of deciding termination for a speci�c form of simple loops that arise in the context of cost analysis. This study gives a better understanding of the (theoretical) limits of scalability and applicability for both termination and cost analysis.

Aboveground tropical tree biomass and carbon storage estimates commonly ignore tree height (H). We estimate the effect of incorporating H on tropics-wide forest biomass estimates in 327 plots across four continents using 42 656 H and diameter measurements and harvested trees from 20 sites to answer the following questions: 1. What is the best H-model form and geographic unit to include in biomass models to minimise site-level uncertainty in estimates of destructive biomass? 2. To what extent does including H estimates derived in (1) reduce uncertainty in biomass estimates across all 327 plots? 3. What effect does accounting for H have on plot- and continental-scale forest biomass estimates? The mean relative error in biomass estimates of destructively harvested trees when including H (mean 0.06), was half that when excluding H (mean 0.13). Power- andWeibull-H models provided the greatest reduction in uncertainty, with regional Weibull-H models preferred because they reduce uncertainty in smaller-diameter classes (?40 cm D) that store about one-third of biomass per hectare in most forests. Propagating the relationships from destructively harvested tree biomass to each of the 327 plots from across the tropics shows that including H reduces errors from 41.8Mgha?1 (range 6.6 to 112.4) to 8.0Mgha?1 (?2.5 to 23.0). For all plots, aboveground live biomass was ?52.2 Mgha?1 (?82.0 to ?20.3 bootstrapped 95%CI), or 13%, lower when including H estimates, with the greatest relative reductions in estimated biomass in forests of the Brazilian Shield, east Africa, and Australia, and relatively little change in the Guiana Shield, central Africa and southeast Asia. Appreciably different stand structure was observed among regions across the tropical continents, with some storing significantly more biomass in small diameter stems, which affects selection of the best height models to reduce uncertainty and biomass reductions due to H. After accounting for variation in H, total biomass per hectare is greatest in Australia, the Guiana Shield, Asia, central and east Africa, and lowest in eastcentral Amazonia, W. Africa, W. Amazonia, and the Brazilian Shield (descending order). Thus, if tropical forests span 1668 million km2 and store 285 Pg C (estimate including H), then applying our regional relationships implies that carbon storage is overestimated by 35 PgC (31?39 bootstrapped 95%CI) if H is ignored, assuming that the sampled plots are an unbiased statistical representation of all tropical forest in terms of biomass and height factors. Our results show that tree H is an important allometric factor that needs to be included in future forest biomass estimates to reduce error in estimates of tropical carbon stocks and emissions due to deforestation.

Numa proposta sociológica o conceito de conversão foi ampliado e articulado junto aos conceitos de identidade e assimilação. Os convertidos entrevistados fazem parte de uma sociedade religiosa muçulmana sunita situada em São Bernardo do Campo na região do grande ABC, São Paulo, organizada em torno de um Centro de Divulgação do Islã para a América Latina (CDIAL), e de uma mesquita que leva o nome de Abu Bakr Assedic. Esta dissertação tenta compreender os antecedentes sócio-religiosos, os motivos da conversão e suas conseqüências. Para tanto, sustentamos ainda que o processo de conversão ao Islã é gradativo e empreendido por um sujeito ativo, que ao interpretar suas próprias experiências, constrói uma identidade particular e diferenciadora do ethos árabe.(AU)

No presente estudo sobre o tema: “Desenvolvimento e Justiça na Missão Integral: Uma análise crítica da presença da Teologia e Práxis da Missão Integral no Solo Paulistano” procura-se analisar a presença do conceito de desenvolvimento e justiça da Missão Integral no solo paulistano. Para tal análise tomou-se como sujeito de pesquisa a Primeira Igreja Batista de São Paulo. Esta dissertação foi desenvolvida no Programa de Pós- Graduação em Ciências da Religião, e pertence à linha de pesquisa “Religião, Sociedade e Cultura”. A metodologia adotada na coleta de dados foi de uma revisão bibliográfica e pesquisa de campo por meio de um roteiro de entrevista. Os questionamentos que nortearam a pesquisa foram: O que é desenvolvimento e Justiça na Missão Integral? É possível notar a presença desses conceitos na práxis e na teologia da Primeira Igreja Batista de São Paulo? Após uma análise da Missão Integral e da Igreja pesquisada, foi possível verificar as aproximações e distanciamentos, assim como hipóteses que justificassem esses fatos. No primeiro capítulo foi apresentada a Missão Integral, sua história, teologia e método. No segundo capítulo os conceitos de desenvolvimento e justiça foram trabalhados. O último capítulo apresentou a Primeira Igreja Batista de São Paulo; buscou estabelecer diálogo entre o conceito de Desenvolvimento e Justiça da Missão Integral e a teologia e práxis da Primeira Igreja Batista de São Paulo.

A presente dissertação tem por objetivo analisar os aspectos religiosos islâmicos e as implicações das relações de gênero no islam sobre a assistência de saúde às mulheres muçulmanas, e através disto, discutir a importância do conhecimento prévio do islamismo pelos profissionais de saúde para propor uma assistência de saúde congruente a estas mulheres, tendo por referência a Política Nacional de Atenção Integral à Saúde da Mulher. Esta pesquisa tem abordagem qualitativa, com o desenvolvimento de pesquisa de campo e aplicação de um roteiro de perguntas semi-estruturado, com questões relacionadas ao islamismo e à saúde das mulheres. Ao todo, foram entrevistadas dez pessoas, sendo estas: quatro mulheres revertidas ao islam, três mulheres de família muçulmana, dois sheiks e uma assistente social. As entrevistas foram realizadas no Centro de Divulgação do Islam para a América Latina e o Caribe (CDIAL) e na Assembléia Mundial da Juventude Islâmica na América Latina (WAMY).

Animals, including humans, express two isoforms of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (EC 6.4.1.2), ACC1 (Mr = 265 kDa) and ACC2 (Mr = 280 kDa). The predicted amino acid sequence of ACC2 contains an additional 136 aa relative to ACC1, 114 of which constitute the unique N-terminal sequence of ACC2. The hydropathic profiles of the two ACC isoforms generally are comparable, except for the unique N-terminal sequence in ACC2. The sequence of amino acid residues 1–20 of ACC2 is highly hydrophobic, suggesting that it is a leader sequence that targets ACC2 for insertion into membranes. The subcellular localization of ACC2 in mammalian cells was determined by performing immunofluorescence microscopic analysis using affinity-purified anti-ACC2-specific antibodies and transient expression of the green fluorescent protein fused to the C terminus of the N-terminal sequences of ACC1 and ACC2. These analyses demonstrated that ACC1 is a cytosolic protein and that ACC2 was associated with the mitochondria, a finding that was confirmed further by the immunocolocalization of a known human mitochondria-specific protein and the carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1. Based on analyses of the fusion proteins of ACC–green fluorescent protein, we concluded that the N-terminal sequences of ACC2 are responsible for mitochondrial targeting of ACC2. The association of ACC2 with the mitochondria is consistent with the hypothesis that ACC2 is involved in the regulation of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation through the inhibition of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 by its product malonyl-CoA.

A wealth of evidence supports increased NO (NO⋅) in asthma, but its roles are unknown. To investigate how NO participates in inflammatory airway events in asthma, we measured NO⋅ and NO⋅ chemical reaction products [nitrite, nitrate, S-nitrosothiols (SNO), and nitrotyrosine] before, immediately and 48 h after bronchoscopic antigen (Ag) challenge of the peripheral airways in atopic asthmatic individuals and nonatopic healthy controls. Strikingly, NO\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document} \begin{equation*}{\mathrm{_{3}^{-}}}\end{equation*}\end{document} was the only NO⋅ derivative to increase during the immediate Ag-induced asthmatic response and continued to increase over 2-fold at 48 h after Ag challenge in contrast to controls [P < 0.05]. NO\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document} \begin{equation*}{\mathrm{_{2}^{-}}}\end{equation*}\end{document} was not affected by Ag challenge at 10 min or 48 h after Ag challenge. Although SNO was not detectable in asthmatic airways at baseline or immediately after Ag, SNO increased during the late response to levels found in healthy controls. A model of NO⋅ dynamics derived from the current findings predicts that NO⋅ may have harmful effects through formation of peroxynitrite, but also subserves an antioxidant role by consuming reactive oxygen species during the immediate asthmatic response, whereas nitrosylation during the late asthmatic response generates SNO, safe reservoirs for removal of toxic NO⋅ derivatives.

Two types of endogenous cannabinoid-receptor agonists have been identified thus far. They are the ethanolamides of polyunsaturated fatty acids—arachidonoyl ethanolamide (anandamide) is the best known compound in the amide series—and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol, the only known endocannabinoid in the ester series. We report now an example of a third, ether-type endocannabinoid, 2-arachidonyl glyceryl ether (noladin ether), isolated from porcine brain. The structure of noladin ether was determined by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and was confirmed by comparison with a synthetic sample. It binds to the CB1 cannabinoid receptor (Ki = 21.2 ± 0.5 nM) and causes sedation, hypothermia, intestinal immobility, and mild antinociception in mice. It binds weakly to the CB2 receptor (Ki > 3 μM).

Osteoclastogenesis is a complex process that is facilitated by bone marrow stromal cells (SCs). To determine if SCs are an absolute requirement for the differentiation of human hematopoietic precursors into fully mature, osteoclasts (OCs), CD34+ cells were mobilized into the peripheral circulation with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, harvested by leukapheresis, and purified by magnetic-activated cell sorting. This procedure yields a population of CD34+ cells that does not contain SC precursors, as assessed by the lack of expression of the SC antigen Stro-1, and that differentiates only into hematopoietic cells. We found that CD34+, Stro-1- cells cultured with a combination of granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor, interleukin 1, and interleukin 3 generated cells that fulfill current criteria for the characterization of OCs, including multinucleation, presence of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, and expression of the calcitonin and vitronectin receptors and of pp60c-src tyrosine kinase. These OCs also expressed mRNA for the noninserted isoform of the calcitonin receptor and excavated characteristic resorption pits in devitalized bone slices. These data demonstrate that accessory SCs are not essential for human osteoclastogenesis and that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor treatment mobilizes OC precursors into the peripheral circulation.

Fatty acid synthase (FAS; EC 2.3.1.85) was purified to near homogeneity from a human hepatoma cell line, HepG2. The HepG2 FAS has a specific activity of 600 nmol of NADPH oxidized per min per mg, which is about half that of chicken liver FAS. All the partial activities of human FAS are comparable to those of other animal FASs, except for the beta-ketoacyl synthase, whose significantly lower activity is attributable to the low 4'-phosphopantetheine content of HepG2 FAS. We cloned the human brain FAS cDNA. The cDNA sequence has an open reading frame of 7512 bp that encodes 2504 amino acids (M(r), 272,516). The amino acid sequence of the human FAS has 79% and 63% identity, respectively, with the sequences of the rat and chicken enzymes. Northern analysis revealed that human FAS mRNA was about 9.3 kb in size and that its level varied among human tissues, with brain, lung, and liver tissues showing prominent expression. The nucleotide sequence of a segment of the HepG2 FAS cDNA (bases 2327-3964) was identical to that of the cDNA from normal human liver and brain tissues, except for a 53-bp sequence (bases 3892-3944) that does not alter the reading frame. This altered sequence is also present in HepG2 genomic DNA. The origin and significance of this sequence variance in the HepG2 FAS gene are unclear, but the variance apparently does not contribute to the lower activity of HepG2 FAS.

Analogs of the 29 amino acid sequence of human growth hormone-releasing hormone (hGH-RH) with agmatine (Agm) in position 29, desaminotyrosine (Dat) in position 1, norleucine (Nle) in position 27, and L-alpha-aminobutyric acid (Abu) in position 15 have been synthesized, and their biological activity was evaluated. Some peptides contained one or two residues of ornithine (Orn) instead of Lys in positions 12 and 21 and additional replacements in positions 8 and 28. All analogs were found to be more potent than hGH-RH-(1-29)-NH2 in the superfused rat pituitary cell system. In tests in vivo in rats after subcutaneous administration, the analogs JI-22, [Dat1, Orn12,21, Abu15, Nle27, Agm29]hGH-RH-(1-29); JI-34, [Dat1, Orn12,21,Abu15,Nle27, Asp28, Agm29]hGH-RH-(1-29); JI-36, [Dat1, Thr8, Orn12,21, Abu15,Nle27,Asp28,Agm29]hGH-RH-(1-29); and JI-38, [Dat1,Gln8, Orn12,21,Abu15,Nle27,Asp28,Agm29]hGH-RH-(1 -29) displayed a potency 44.6,80.9,95.8, and 71.4 times greater, respectively, than that of hGH-RH-(1-29)-NH2 at 15 min and 217.1, 89.7, 87.9, and 116.8 times greater at 30 min. After intravenous administration, JI-22, JI-36, and JI-38 were 3.2-3.8 times more potent than hGH-RH-(1-29)-NH2 at 5 min and 6.1-8.5 times more active at 15 min. All analogs were found to have higher binding affinities for GH-RH receptors on rat pituitary cells than hGH-RH-(1-29)-NH2. Because of high activity and greater stability, these analogs could be considered for therapy of patients with growth hormone deficiency.

We have cloned and sequenced the cDNA coding for human HepG2 acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC; EC 6.4.1.2). The sequence has an open reading frame of 7038 bp that encode 2346 amino acids (M(r), 264,737). The C-terminal 2.6-kb sequence is very different from that recently reported for human ACC (Ha, J., Daniel, S., Kong, I.-S., Park, C.-K., Tae, H.-J. & Kim, K.-H. [1994] Eur. J. Biochem. 219, 297-306). Northern blot analysis revealed that the ACC mRNA is approximately 10 kb in size and that its level varies among the tissues tested. Evidence is presented to show that the human ACC gene is 200-480 kbp in size and maps to chromosome 17q12. We also provide evidence for the presence of another ACC-like gene with similarly sized mRNA but tissue-specific expression different from that of the ACC gene reported herein. That this second ACC-like gene encodes the 280-kDa carboxylase is not ruled out.
