The transesterification of methyl salicylate with phenol has been studied in vapour phase over solid acid catalysts such as ZrO2, MoO3 and SO42- or Mo(VI) ions modified zirconia. The catalytic materials were prepared and characterized for their total surface acidity, BET surface area and powder XRD patterns. The effect of mole-ratio of the reactants, catalyst bed temperature, catalyst weight, flow-rate of reactants, WHSV and time-on-stream on the conversion (%) of phenol and selectivity (%) of salol has been investigated. A good yield (up to 70%) of salol with 90% selectivity was observed when the reactions were carried out at a catalyst bed temperature of 200 degrees C and flow-rate of 10 mL/h in presence of Mo(VI)/ZrO2 as catalyst. The results have been interpreted based on the variation of acidic properties and powder XRD phases of zirconia on incorporation of SO42- or Mo(VI) ions. The effect of poisoning of acid sites of SO42- or Mo(VI) ions modified zirconia on total surface acidity, powder XRD phases and catalytic activity was also studied. Possible reaction mechanisms for the formation of salol and diphenyl ether over acid sites are proposed.

The mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg alloy reinforced with SiCP composites prepared by solidification route were studied by altering the matrix strength with different heat treatments. With respect to the control alloy, the composites have shown similar ageing behaviour in terms of microhardness data at 135 degrees C. It was shown that although composites exhibited enhanced modulus values, the strengthening was found to be dependent on the damage that is occurring during straining. Thus the initial matrix strength plays an important role in determining the strengthening. Consequently, compression data had shown a different trend compared to tension. This paper describes the design and development of a thermoelectric gas sensor suitable for the detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). In order to enhance the seebeck coefficient of the sensor, we have deposited chromium metal films on a limited area of the glass substrate. Tin oxide thin film was deposited on top of these metal films. The resulting metal/semiconductor film exhibits a high seebeck coefficient of 400 mu V/ degrees C. Platinum catalyst film deposited on the oxide film to create the necessary temperature gradient resulted in further enhancement in the sensitivity of the sensor to target gases. The sensor shows high sensitivity to ppm-change in the concentration of target hydrocarbons at a relatively low temperature of 120 degrees C.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been prepared by pyrolysing tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the presence of nickelocene. Pyrolysis of the precursor mixture has been achieved at temperature as low as 600 degrees C. In this simple approach no carrier gas has been used. The yield of purified carbon nanotubes is found to be more than 65%. Characterization of the as-prepared and purified nanotubes are done by Xray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectra.

An alpha-D-glucuronidase was purified from the culture filtrates of Thermoascus aurantiacus. A simple colorimetric method for its assay is reported. The enzyme is a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of 118,000. It acts optimally at pH 4.5. It shows maximum activity at 65 degrees C. The t 1/2 at 70 degrees C was 40 min. It specifically cleaved the alpha-(1----2) linkage between 4-O-methyl-alpha-D-glucuronic acid and the xylose residue in xylan and several glucurono-xylooligosaccharides.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions. Electrochemical oxidation of borohydride is studied on nanosized rhodium, iridium, and bimetallic rhodium-iridium catalysts supported onto Vulcan XC72R carbon. The catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with cyclic voltammetry and polarization studies. The studies reveal that a 20 wt % bimetallic Rh-Ir catalyst supported onto carbon (Rh-Ir/C) is quite effective for the oxidation of borohydride. Direct borohydride fuel cell with Rh-Ir/C as the anode catalyst and Pt/C as the cathode catalyst exhibits a peak power density of 270 mW/cm(2) at a load current density of 290 mA/cm(2) as against 200 mW/cm(2) at 225 mA/cm(2) for Rh/C and 140 mW/cm(2) at 165 mA/cm(2) for Ir/C while operating at 80 degrees C. The synergistic catalytic activity for the bimetallic Rh-Ir nanoparticles toward borohydride oxidation is corroborated by density-functional theory calculations using electron-localization function. This article describes successful incorporation of multiwalled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and various functionalized BNNTs by Lewis bases such as trioctylamine (TOA), tributylamine (TBA), and triphenylphosphine (TPP), etc., in organogels formed by triphenylenevinylene (TPV)-based low molecular weight gelator (LMWG) in toluene and consequent characterization of the resulting gel nanocomposites. Functionalized BNNTs were synthesized first, and the presence of tubular structures with high aspect ratio and increased diameter compared to the starting BNNTs was confirmed by SEM. TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The micrographs of composites of I and BNNTs showed evidence of wrapping of the gelator molecules on to the BNNT surface presumably brought about by pi-pi stacking and van der Waals interactions, This leads to the formation of densely packed and directionally aligned fibrous networks. Such ``reinforced'' aggregation of the gelator molecules in presence of doped BNNTs led to an increase in the sot-to-gel transition temperature and the solidification temperature of the gel nanocomposites as revealed from differential scanning calorimetry. Rheological investigations of the gel nanocomposites indicate that the flow properties of the resulting materials become resistant to applied stress upon incorporation of even a very low wt % of BNNTs. Finally, the increase in thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite compared to the gelator alone was observed for the temperature range of 0-60 degrees C which may make these composites potentially useful in various applications depending on the choice and the amount of BNNT loading in the composite.

The titled reaction was effected with iso-amyl nitrite or sodium nitrite, both in cone. H2SO4 at 0-25 degrees C in excellent yields (55-98%). Apart from the mild temperatures employed, organic solvents and reagents can be avoided, and the by-products are CO2 and N-2, so the conditions are environment-friendly. The dielectric response of pulsed laser ablated barium strontium titanate thin films were studied as a function of frequency and ambient temperature (from room temperature to 320 degrees C) by employing impedance spectroscopy. Combined modulus and impedance spectroscopic plots were used to study the response of the film, which in general may contain the grain, grain boundary, and the electrode/film interface as capacitive elements. The spectroscopic plots revealed that the major response was due to the grains, while contributions from the grain boundary or the electrode/film interface was negligible. Further observation from the complex impedance plot showed data points lying on a single semicircle, implying the response originated from a single capacitive element corresponding to the bulk grains. Conductivity plots against frequency at different temperatures suggested a response obeying the 'universal power law'. The value of the activation energies computed from the Arrhenius plots of both ac and dc conductivities with 1000/T were 0.97 and 1.04 eV, respectively. This was found to be in excellent agreement with published literature, and was attributed to the motion of oxygen vacancies within the bulk. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Germanium nanowires were grown on Au coated Si substrates at 380 degrees C in a high vacuum (5 x 10(-5) Torr) by e-beam evaporation of Germanium (Ge). The morphology observation by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) shows that the grown nanowires are randomly oriented with an average length and diameter of 600 nm and 120 nm respectively for a deposition time of 60 min. The nanowire growth ratewas measured to be similar to 10 nm/min. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies revealed that the Ge nanowires were single crystalline in nature and further energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX) has shown that the tip of the grown nanowires was capped with Au nanoparticles, this shows that the growth of the Ge nanowires occurs by the vapour liquid solid (VLS) mechanism. HRTEM studies on the grown Ge nanowire show that they are single crystalline in nature and the growth direction was identified to be along [110]. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We combine first-principles calculations with EXAFS studies to investigate the origin of high oxygen storage capacity in ceria-zirconia solid solution, prepared by solution combustion method. We find that nanocrystalline Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 can be reduced to Ce0.5Zr0.5O1.57 by H-2 upto 850 degrees C with an OSC of 65 cc/gm which is extremely high. Calculated local atomic-scale structure reveals the presence of long and short bonds resulting in four-fold coordination of the cations, confirmed by the EXAFS studies. Bond valence analysis of the microscopic structure and energetics is used to evaluate the strength of binding of different oxide ions and vacancies. We find the presence of strongly and weakly bound oxygens, of which the latter are responsible for the higher oxygen storage capacity in the mixed oxides than in the pure CeO2.

Genistein and daidzein, the major isoflavones present in soybeans, possess a wide spectrum of physiological and pharmacological functions. The binding of genistein to human serum albumin (HSA) has been investigated by equilibrium dialysis, fluorescence measurements, CD and molecular visualization. One mole of genistein is bound per mole of HSA with a binding constant of 1.5 +/- 0.2 X 10(5) m(-1). Binding of genistein to HSA precludes the attachment of daidzein. The ability of HSA to bind genistein is found to be lost when the tryptophan residue of albumin is modified with N-bromosuccinimide. At 27 degrees C (pH 7.4), van't Hoff's enthalpy, entropy and free energy changes that accompany the binding are found to be -13.16 kcal.mol(-1), -21 cal.mol(-1)K(-1) and -6.86 kcal.mol(-1), respectively. Temperature and ionic strength dependence and competitive binding measurements of genistein with HSA in the presence of fatty acids and 8-anilino-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid have suggested the involvement of both hydrophobic and ionic interactions in the genistein-HSA binding. Binding measurements of genistein with BSA and HSA, and those in the presence of warfarin and 2,3,5-tri-iodobenzoic acid and Forster energy transfer measurements have been used for deducing the binding pocket on HSA. Fluorescence anisotropy measurements of daidzein bound and then displaced with warfarin, 2,3,5-tri-iodobenzoic acid or diazepam confirm the binding of daidzein and genistein to subdomain IIA of HSA. The ability of HSA to form ternery complexes with other neutral molecules such as warfarin, which also binds within the subdomain IIA pocket, increases our understanding of the binding dynamics of exogenous drugs to HSA.
